Sri Lanka won their first home Test since the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan in July 2010 as they completed a 75-run victory over England in Galle. Sri Lanka had, until this game, played 17 Tests and won just one since Murali’s retirement as the leading Test wicket-taker.Having set England a mammoth 340 to win, Sri Lanka endured a few nervous moments as Jonathan Trott, in particular, batted with great fortitude. In the end, though, the target was too great and Sri Lanka held their nerve. It was another spinner, Rangana Herath, who led Sri Lanka’s victory charge; he took 12 wickets in the match and expertly exploited a turning surface and England’s deficiencies against spin bowling. It might be tempting, then, to claim that Sri Lanka have discovered a replacement for Murali. In truth, Sri Lanka are learning new ways to win. With Murali in the side, life was relatively easy; his excellence allowed Sri Lanka to mask other weaknesses. Those days have gone and may never return. The Sri Lanka team still contains match-winners, though. Mahela Jayawardene’s first-innings century – a magnificent innings – provided a welcome reminder of his genius, while Kumar Sangakkara remains one of the finest batsmen in world cricket.Generally, however, they are now a team that require contributions from every individual.Herath is a perfect example. He is a skilled performer, certainly. He bowls with pleasing flight, has all the traditional variations and has excellent control. His second-innings performance was his ninth five-wicket haul and left him the fifth Sri Lanka bowler to claim ten wickets in a Test. But he is no Murali. Only three years ago he was plying his trade as a journeymen pro – and with modest success – in the North Staffordshire and South Cheshire League, while a spell as overseas player with Hampshire produced just ten first-class wickets at an average of 46.30.In these conditions, however, he is a tough proposition. And, with the support of Suraj Ranjiv and two underrated seamers, he was able to apply pressure on a batting line-up lacking competence and confidence.Herath was also supported by some outstanding fielding. The wicketkeeper, Prasanna Jayawardene, enjoyed an excellent came with bat and gloves. But, in a match that took many twists and turns, perhaps the defining moment came when Lahiru Thirimanne clung on to a desperately tough chance at short leg to end a fifth-wicket partnership that looked as if it could take England to a record-breaking victory.Matt Prior and Trott added 81 runs. With the field pushed back, the pair were able to rotate the strike and accumulate without undue risk. Then, however, Prior connected well with a sweep only to see Thirimanne, anticipating the path of the ball as he saw the batsman shape for the shot, react brilliantly to hold on after it struck him on the body. The dismissal precipitated a dramatic collapse as England lost their last six wickets for only 31 runs.Defeat was cruel reward for Trott. Trott’s century, a wonderful example of patience, technique and concentration, would, in many circumstances, have deserved to win a Test. As it was, however, he was unable to compensate for the failure of his colleagues.Trott’s seventh Test century sustained England’s hopes of a remarkable win until the brink of tea but his dismissal, caught at leg slip as he attempted to turn an off break into the leg side, ended any realistic hopes the tourists may have had.On the final day Trott helplessly watched on as Kevin Pietersen – now averaging just 12.50 on England’s winter tours – was beaten in the flight and chipped to midwicket and Ian Bell missed a premeditated sweep. Samit Patel, trying to give himself room and hit through the off side, was another man to be superbly caught at the second attempt by Tillakaratne Dilshan at short extra cover, before Graeme Swann, attempting an ugly sweep, was leg before the two left-hand tailenders were soon mopped up by Randiv’s off-spin.The result sentenced England to their fourth successive Test defeat. For the No.1 rated team who, only a few months ago, were talking about setting a legacy, that is an acute embarrassment. They need not look too far to see where they want wrong. They simply made too many mistakes. In dropping Mahela Jayawardene four times during the course of his match-defining century they were profligate beyond repair. Stuart Broad’s no-ball to Prasanna Jayawardene – and the manner in which Sri Lanka’s last two wickets were able to eke out more than 50 runs in each innings (65 in the first and 87 in the second) – were also costly. Most pertinently, though, England’s batsmen continue to struggle against spin bowling. To be bowled out within 47 overs on a blameless second day track was always likely to prove decisive. Andrew Strauss, Pietersen and Bell (despite his half-century in the first innings) are all in need of runs in Test cricket and it was telling that, even in their second innings, when England batted so much better, they lost all ten of their wickets to spin.Perhaps, though, they can take just a little encouragement from certain aspects of this performance. England have never made more than 332 to win in the fourth innings of a Test but, set 340 here, there were moments when they threatened to go close. Yes, they fell short, but they at least showed some of the fight and fibre that was missing in the UAE.

Miandad may take batting coach job

Javed Miandad has said he will consider becoming the permanent batting coach of Pakistan, after their tour of the West Indies is completed

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Apr-2011Javed Miandad has said he will consider becoming the batting coach of Pakistan, after their tour of the West Indies is completed. Miandad, however, will not travel with the team to the West Indies, but will work with the batsmen before their departure, as he did for Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand last year.”I had detailed meetings with Mr. [Ijaz] Butt and [Shahid] Afridi, but I told them that I could not travel with the team to the West Indies,” Miandad told . “I think the tour of West Indies is not a tough one. After this tour I might consider taking up the [batting] coaching assignment.”It was on the request of Pakistan captain Afridi and chairman of the Pakistan board Butt that Miandad, who has had three stints as Pakistan head coach, agreed to work with the team’s batsmen before the upcoming tour. The tour begins on April 18, and comprises a one-off Twenty20 game, five one-dayers and three Tests. The tour ends on May 24, after which Pakistan will travel to Ireland to play a one-day series. As far as what his role would be as batting coach, if he were to take the job full-time, Miandad said it would be mostly restricted to advising batsmen on pitches and bowlers rather than looking to make drastic changes to their techniques.”I believe that once a batsman is selected for the national team you can’t change his technique,” he said. “You can only teach him the finer points of the game, like how to handle various bowlers on different pitches.”Batting was a concern for Pakistan during their World Cup, during which they failed in two chases, against New Zealand in the group stages and India in the semi-finals. None of the Pakistan batsmen managed to score a century during the tournament, and none of them were in the top 20 run-scorers either.Pakistan have included five uncapped players in their squad for the West Indies tour: right-hand batsman Usman Salahuddin, allrounder Hammad Azam, fast bowlers Junaid Khan and Sadaf Hussain, and wicketkeeper Mohammad Salman. Miandad said the changes were positive moves.”It’s the right time to look ahead for the future and start preparing for the next World Cup. We have to look for players who could be there in 2015 and, if they have potential, we should start giving them proper chances.”

ICC announce World Cup prizemoney hike

The winner of the 2011 World Cup will receive more than US$4million in prizemoney, after the ICC announced a total pool of US$10million for the competition, double the figure that was in place for the 2007 tournament in the Caribbean

Cricinfo staff20-Apr-2010The winner of the 2011 World Cup will receive more than US$4million in prizemoney, after the ICC announced a total pool of US$10million for the competition, double the figure that was in place for the 2007 tournament in the Caribbean. The ICC Board, which met in Dubai on Monday, agreed to the increase “in order to reflect the importance of the ICC’s flagship competition.”Australia, the winners of the 2007 event, pocketed US$2.24million, with Sri Lanka, the runners-up, taking home US$1million. In 2003, the total prize money was the same, but the percentage handed to the top two teams was less. Australia collected US $2m as champions, while the losing finalists, India, picked up US$800,000.

Root takes England into huge lead

Joe Root’s sparky, unbeaten 92 ensured England remained in complete control at The Oval despite a mid-afternoon fightback from India

Report by David Hopps16-Aug-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIntensity, tension and an ultimate examination of courage and skill: such is the oft-stated attraction of Test cricket. But sometimes a day at the Test is none of those things, but just gambols along pleasantly enough, the result as good as decided from an early hour, with the chance of carelessness at every turn. Saturday at The Oval felt like this – but Joe Root was keenly resistant to the dangers. When India took four England wickets in 11 overs on the second afternoon, transforming England’s supremacy at 191 for 1 – already 43 runs to the good – into a somewhat lax position of authority at 229 for 5, Root glanced meaningfully at a deteriorating scoreboard, a young batsman who was obliged to get his old head on again. When it comes to the business of batting, his old head is never far away.By the close of the second day of the final Investec Test, Root had re-established England’s supremacy, not by withdrawing into himself, but by an innings both shrewd and enterprising: 92 not out from 129 balls. His forces off the back foot – his trademark shot – were crisp and assured. He survived some testing overs with the second new ball from Varun Aaron, a little jumpily at times, before preying upon a tiring attack so successfully in the closing overs that he almost stole in for a century. England scored 139 in 32 overs after tea to lead by 237.His contentment now he has a settled position in the middle order was unmistakeable, his adaptability growing by the month, his desire for runs unabated. Even with the damage of a troubled Ashes series, his Test average is heading towards 50. That one day he will captain England seems inevitable. He loves batting and even in his most defensive mode his mind ticks so obviously that he is eminently watchable. You feel you can hear it ticking loudly enough to keep the entire street awake at night. On this occasion, he was busy from the outset, a perky stand of 80 in 25 overs with Jos Buttler singing of a new England era, runs cascading in the closing overs after Buttler’s dismissal to prey on a tiring Indian attack, not as much playing for the morrow, as taking advantage of today. He destroyed India with a sweet touch.India’s attack had its limitations, although it showed more relish for the fight than the batsmen. Bhuvneshwar Kumar looked spent, the effects of five Tests in six weeks. Ishant Sharma found threatening bounce at times but he was well below the pace that destroyed England at Lord’s. R Ashwin, although not particularly threatening, might have bowled more. As for Stuart Binny, that first Test wicket remains elusive. But even days of unremitting domination there can be casualties. Sam Robson could be one. He made a maiden Test hundred in his second Test of the summer, against Sri Lanka at Headingley, but over seven Tests he has barely averaged 30 and, for all his earnestness, he has struggled to assert himself.Robson fell in the second over of the morning, poking charily at his second ball, from Aaron, steering the next awkwardly through gully for four, and then being bowled by a near yorker. It was another stilted dismissal for a player who has looked somewhat manufactured. He might get a chance to bat again in this Test – the last of the summer – and it will be April before England turn to the five-day game again on a three-Test tour of the West Indies.Aaron was India’s figure of hope. It was a wholehearted spell from Aaron, who bowled his share of gifts, but who regularly found swing at close to 90mph, that shook India into a concerted response after England, 148 for 1 by lunch, had achieved parity, their nine remaining wickets asserting their dominance as plain as a row of pikestaffs. Then four of those pikestaffs toppled over. Alastair Cook was dropped twice at first slip before a third edge to the same position in eight overs was finally held, so ending an innings of 79 that had begun responsibly but which, in its closing stages, had all the stability of a rich curry on an acid stomach.Cook has arrested his decline with three half-centuries in four, getting more bend in his front leg than he did at the start of the summer. India’s bowlers graciously fed him his favourite cut and pull shots that a few weeks ago he must have imagined he would never gorge on again. But it would be misleading to suggest that all his problems are behind him. He was twice reprieved, on 65 and 70. M Vijay spurned a straightforward chance at waist high; it was his catch, but his lack of understanding with his wicketkeeper MS Dhoni is doubtless preying on his mind. Ajinkya Rahane missed a slightly tougher opportunity as Cook tried to force Ashwin off the back foot. Finally, Vijay held one, a good catch low to his right.Gary Ballance was bemused by his own misjudgement on 64 when he pushed rigidly at a nondescript delivery by Ashwin, perhaps benefiting from a touch of extra bounce, and planted the ball into the hands of silly mid-off.Ballance’s start to his Test career remains among the best in England’s history. He is a utilitarian cricketer, a batsman whose worth has become apparent as the summer has progressed. The shot that brought up his half-century summed up his composure: swaying out of the way of a short ball from Bhuvneshwar, calmly reassessed and instead steered it with ease over the slips. In the over after Ballance’s dismissal, India struck again, Ian Bell pushing at a length ball from Ishant that straightened just a tad. Moeen Ali’s reputation for soft dismissals will also be entrenched further after he played on against Ashwin, indecisive over whether to leave the ball. A bowling attack which could have been forgiven for surrendering to despair had instead responded gamely.Buttler made another useful contribution before he clipped an inswinger from Ishant to short midwicket, Chris Woakes fell down the leg side, third ball for nought, but Root and Chris Jordan remained at the close. Stuart Broad, next man in, fingered his broken nose and was probably grateful for at least another 16 hours’ healing.

'Having played till recently helped' – Bangar

Sanjay Bangar, the Kings XI Punjab coach, was an active player in Indian domestic cricket as recently as January 2013. He believed that experience has contributed to managing his side’s local players.”All other teams also have Indian coaches on their support staff,” Bangar said. “My advantage was that I was playing till just over 15 months ago. I have seen how most of these players respond under match situations. Maybe having played till very recently helped a bit.”Sandeep Sharma is three shy of becoming the top wicket-taker of the season. Akshar Patel, the 20-year old Gujarat spinner, has maintained an economy of 6.48 – only Sunil Narine and Lasith Malinga have given less per over among the top ten wicket-takers. And Manan Vohra’s strike rate has rivalled the best hitters in the league.”The key is to not think too far ahead and try and do the things that we are good at, and also challenge our own limitations,” Bangar said, when talking about his team’s chances in the qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders. “That has been the emphasis for our team. We have not really gone beyond that. That has helped us play consistent cricket over a longer period of time.”Bayliss asks for early burst from bowlersKolkata Knight Riders have enjoyed a near-flawless run into the playoffs since returning to India. A string of seven wins – their longest – has placed them even money favourites going into the qualifier. Four of those had been set up by their bowlers restricting the opposition to under 160.However, most of the heavy lifting has been by their spinners. All of their quicks have been taken for more than seven per over and coach Trevor Bayliss wants that to be addressed.”I thought that our bowling in the last match was a little bit off early on, so I would like to see that improve,” he said. “I can’t say too much about what we need to do because I think we have played some very good cricket. In the second and third last matches, I thought we were very good while batting, bowling and fielding. We are at the top of the game and we are confident going into Qualifier 1, which is a good thing.”Local seamers impress DawesJoe Dawes, India and Kings XI bowling coach, is pleased with the work his seamers have put in this season. Sandeep Sharma’s abilities with the new ball were reserved for special praise, but Dawes said the 21-year old needs to develop his pace for when the pitch doesn’t offer him help.”He’s shown really great signs and he swings the ball, which is a great characteristic to have,” Dawes said. “Although he’s still learning, he’s quite a clever kid, in that he knows what he wants to do. He doesn’t execute it all the time, but he does have a clear picture of what he wants to do, in his mind.”He’s not the fastest bowler running around and he’ll need to develop his pace. But that will come as he grows in age and body. When it doesn’t swing, he’s got to learn to hit the wicket and just be consistent with his lines and lengths, which he knows and is working hard on.”Parvinder Awana is another bowler benefiting from Dawes’ experience. “He is a hit-the-wicket bowler, we mainly talk about his lengths and hitting the area as hard as possible and not just putting it there. All he needs to learn is to keep coming strong all the time and not slip into that survival mode from bowling all the overs in domestic cricket.”

Shakib joins Adelaide Strikers

Shakib Al Hasan has signed up with Adelaide Strikers as a replacement player for their injured captain Johan Botha, becoming the first Bangladeshi cricketer in the Big Bash League. He will join the side for Sunday’s game against Sydney Sixers in Adelaide.”While it is disappointing to be missing our captain at this stage of the season, we are lucky to be able to add someone as talented as Al Hasan to our line-up at such short notice,” Strikers coach Darren Berry said. “Al Hasan is renowned for being cool under pressure, which is so important in this form of the game.”He is a left-arm orthodox spinner and left-arm punishing batsman, so he will play a similar role to Botha and will help to maintain the balance in our team. We spoke to him yesterday and he is chomping at the bit to get out here to help Strikers continue our winning form and reclaim our position at the top of the table.”Shakib is currently fourth on the ICC’s Twenty20 allrounder rankings. He has 1832 runs at a strike-rate of 127.57 and 148 wickets at an economy-rate of 6.60 from 116 T20 matches.Botha sustained a thumb injury in Strikers’ win over Perth Scorchers on December 31, and is likely to miss two games, with an expected return against Scorchers on January 16 in Perth. Phillip Hughes will act as captain in Botha’s absence. “We will continue to monitor Johan’s injury over the next week and look forward to him re-joining the team soon,” Berry said.Under the new BBL playing conditions for this season, Botha will be able to resume his place in the squad if he recovers and is fit to play before the end of the tournament.

'Even-bouncing wicket' at Eden Gardens

Amid reports that Eden Gardens is likely to roll out a low and slow pitch for the first Test against West Indies starting on Wednesday, chief groundsman Prabir Mukherjee has said stroke-making won’t be too difficult.”It will be a good, firm, even-bouncing wicket, so that the [batsmen] will be able to play their shots,” Mukherjee told ESPNcricinfo.Eden Gardens has had a lot of rain in the lead-up to the Test. In fact, there was no play possible in a Ranji Trophy game last week, between Bengal and Baroda, despite there being no rain on the days of the match. It is believed the organisers didn’t want to risk playing on a damp pitch considering the Test was so close, and it is the moisture underneath the surface that is expected to slow down the surface. However, Mukherjee said batsmen need not worry.”There is no such thing as a bowler’s wicket in cricket,” he said. “That is an under-prepared wicket. Cricket is a game of batsmanship. When a batsman makes a hundred he gets more applause than when a bowler gets a five-for. That’s the difference. There were reports as soon as Eden Gardens was announced as the venue for the Test – Sachin Tendulkar’s 199th – that the stadium would dish out a flat surface so that Tendulkar enjoyed his farewell. Mukherjee sought to rubbish those claims.”I had no pressure to prepare a wicket tailor-made for Sachin,” he said. “And why should I? He’s played 198 Test matches. For Sachin, to make it easier to bat is a foolish approach. There’s a reason why he’s played so many Test matches. And I’ll just pray to God that he shows that again, by making another hundred in his 199th Test. It’s just a pleasure for us to watch him play here for one last time.”
