Injured Vettori out of India tour, Patel recalled

Daniel Vettori has been ruled out of New Zealand’s Test tour of India due to a groin injury he suffered in the West Indies, while the batsman Dean Brownlie has been dropped after a disappointing Caribbean tour

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Aug-2012Daniel Vettori has been ruled out of New Zealand’s Test tour of India due to a groin injury he suffered in the West Indies, while the batsman Dean Brownlie has been dropped after a disappointing Caribbean tour. The offspinner Jeetan Patel has earned a recall as a result of his outstanding county form for Warwickshire, and the allrounder James Franklin has also been named in a 15-man squad. They are the only two changes from the group that lost 2-0 to West Indies over the past two weeks, with the legspinner Tarun Nethula again included despite being overlooked for an all-pace attack in Jamaica when Vettori was injured. New Zealand could play two spinners in the Indian conditions but if not, Nethula will face stiff competition for a spot from Patel, who has 38 first-class wickets at 23.65 in the County Championship this year.”The tour of India will be a great challenge and experience for this squad,” the national selection manager Kim Littlejohn said. “Unfortunately Daniel Vettori won’t recover in time for the Test series but his injury has created and opportunity for Jeetan Patel to come back into the side. Jeetan has been in great from for Warwickshire and deserves his opportunity.”James Franklin has been brought into the squad to bolster the batting. He brings a lot of experience and knowledge of playing in Indian conditions which will be invaluable. Dean Brownlie misses out on selection. We continue to see him as player of the future but at this stage we feel he needs to works on parts of his game. There’s no doubt he will work hard to regain selection.”The Indian trip consists of two Tests, beginning in Hyderabad on August 23, and will present an enormous challenge for New Zealand following their miserable Caribbean tour. They will especially require more from their batsmen; Kane Williamson’s 102 in Wellington in March is the only century made by a New Zealander in their past five Tests.Squad Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn, Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor (capt), Kane Williamson, BJ Watling, James Franklin, Kruger van Wyk, Doug Bracewell, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult, Tarun Nethula, Jeetan Patel, Chris Martin.

CA expects independent directors by October

Cricket Australia is expected to move to a smaller board featuring some independent directors in October, despite objections from the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA). A fully independent board is likely to be introduced in 2015, meaning that within three years the state associations will almost certainly have no representation at CA board level. The plan is part of CA’s response to the Crawford-Carter review into the organisation’s governance. A new financial model that would see CA take control of all internationals played in Australia has also been proposed. Board reform was one of the key recommendations from the governance review, which suggested the end to the archaic system in which some states held greater power than others. The two-stage plan, discussed at a CA board meeting in Melbourne on Tuesday, is based around introducing three independent directors to work alongside six state-appointed directors – one from each state – at the annual general meeting in October. In 2015, barring any unforeseen hurdles, the six state-appointed directors would be phased out and all nine board members would be independent of official state affiliation, although there would need to be at least one residing in each state. The existing board structure features 14 directors, all appointed by state boards, with three each from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, two each from Western Australia and Queensland, and one from Tasmania. CA chairman Wally Edwards said South Australia remained reluctant to give up its voice on the board, but approval from five of the six states was enough for the moves to go ahead.”We didn’t get a unanimous position because of this issue of the independent director,” Edwards said. “One state is pretty well locked in on wanting to have their own delegated director for all time. That’s the one sticking point there, from SACA.”SACA are against it, I don’t want to hide that fact. They’re very positive on everything except that the director who would be located in South Australia, they want to be able to appoint him and they want him to be on their board.”In the end, if five out of the six states agree then it moves forward and Cricket Australia’s constitution will be changed to say that directors can’t be a member of their state board… it’s an issue that SACA will have to come to grips with as well.”The move needs to be approved at a special CA meeting in July, and South Australia’s objections would not be enough to prevent it. Should the proposal succeed, a nomination committee consisting of Edwards, two state chairmen and two people who are not part of a board will choose the three independent directors who would take office in October. The new CA chairman would then be elected at the AGM from those three independent directors and the six directors nominated by the state boards. Edwards said he was confident the changes would be approved and would lead to the total overhaul of the board in 2015 – CA says the two-stage process is a legal obligation – despite the failure of several attempts in past years to revolutionise the unwieldy and inequitable board structure.”If this goes through in July, we will have achieved a lot,” Edwards said. “We will still have one more phase to go and we will still have six appointed directors, but we’ll have moved from 14 to nine, all states will be put on an equal footing… there’s been a lot of grumpiness about some states being more equal than others. This first step gets rid of all that.”Edwards also said the states had agreed to a new financial model in which each state association would give up the management of international matches in its territory, and in return would be paid a minimum guarantee grant by CA. Edwards said no state would be worse off under the new plan, which he said would “untangle a lot of the very, very complicated… ways of running our business”.

Basnahira, Combined Provinces ease to wins

A round-up of the fifth day of matches at the Sri Lanka Cricket Inter-Provincial Twenty20

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jul-2011An unbeaten half-century from Jeevantha Kulatunga fashioned Basnahira’s 34-run win against Ruhuna at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Basnahira’s top-order was solid, after Ruhuna put them in to bat. While Kulatunga, batting at No. 3, struck 69 off 47 with six fours and four sixes, the other batsmen in the top four contributed well to carry Basnahira to 166 for 3. The Ruhuna chase, apart from a short burst from opener Mahela Udawatte, lacked momentum. The batsmen failed to build on starts, and a mini-collapse halfway through the innings meant they stumbled from 74 for 3 to 78 for 6, putting Basnahira firmly in charge. Chathura Peiris and Tillakaratne Dilshan did most of the damage for Basnahira, claiming three wickets each in tight spells, as Ruhuna folded for 132 in the 19th over. The win puts Basnahira at the top of the points table. After three losses, Combined Provinces turned out an improved performance, to beat Wayamba comprehensively in the second game of the day. Chasing 156, Combined Provinces eased past their target with seven wickets and nine balls to spare. The chase was built around a rapid 52 from Ashan Priyanjan, and cameos of 33 apiece from Dhanushka Gunathilleke and Jeevan Mendis. Earlier, after choosing to bat, Wayamba’s line-up failed to build on starts – the only sizeable contribution was 41 from Chamara Silva. Chaminda Vidanapathirana, Ajantha Mendis and Sachith Pathirana combined to keep Wayamba to 155 for 7, claiming two wickets each while conceding just over a run a ball.

Mumbai deny lodging Jaipur pitch complaint

Mumbai Indians have said they have not lodged any official complaint about the nature of the Jaipur pitch on which they lost to Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets on April 29. They also charged Rajasthan of trying to “sensationalise” the issue by making “unsolicited, distasteful” comments. On a slow surface, Mumbai were restricted to 94 for 8 in 20 overs and slumped to their second defeat of the season. After the match, Mumbai captain Sachin Tendulkar had said: “It was a tough pitch, different to what we play on in Mumbai. I don’t want to take the credit away from Rajasthan, who bowled and fielded well. It was two-paced, the ball kept low.”Initially, it was thought that Mumbai had complained about the pitch and Rajasthan captain Shane Warne had said he was “disappointed” by that. The IPL’s pitch inspector Venkat Sundaram was present for Rajasthan’s next home game, on Sunday, against Pune Warriors. “I am not having a go at Sachin or anyone, but [for] Mumbai in general, to come here and get outplayed like they did, I think they are using that as an excuse,” Warne had said. “We suddenly have a pitch inspector here and I thought that was totally out of order and unnecessary.”When Tendulkar was dismissed for 51 off a high full toss on Monday’s match against Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Cricket Association’s secretary Sanjay Dixit tweeted: “Sachin gets out off a full toss. Can’t blame the pitch this time.” He had earlier tweeted: “Mumbai is known on the Ranji circuit as the most graceless side. Showing off their pedigree in IPL too.”In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mumbai denied lodging a complaint about the Jaipur pitch and hit back at Rajasthan. “There have been unsolicited, distasteful comments and personal remarks made in reaction which is not in keeping with the spirit of the game,” it said. “It is disconcerting to note that Rajasthan Royals and a senior official of the Rajasthan Cricket Association are trying to sensationalise this issue.”

Shafiul stars as Bangladesh seal thriller

Shafiul Islam raised Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign from the dead, as he turned yet another astonishing contest on its head

The Bulletin by Andrew Miller11-Mar-2011
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMahmudullah kept his cool alongside Shafiul Islam to take Bangladesh home•Getty ImagesShafiul Islam raised Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign from the dead, as he turned yet another astonishing contest on its head with a breathtaking assault in the batting Powerplay to leave England stunned by their fifth cliffhanger in consecutive contests, and facing their own make-or-break encounter with West Indies in Chennai next week.In another unbearably tense finale, Bangladesh’s ninth-wicket pair of Shafiul and Mahmudullah transformed a futile situation with a glorious blaze of strokeplay, as they turned an asking rate of 57 in 62 balls into an emotional victory with an over to spare. The honour of the winning hit went to Mahmudullah, who belted a Tim Bresnan full-toss through the covers for four to cue pandemonium among the most passionate cricket supporters in the world, but it was Shafiul’s refusal to accept defeat that ultimately paved the way for glory. On a sluggish track in which runs had, for the most part, to be grafted, England batted first and were bowled out for 225 – a total that was no better than par, and which owed everything to a chalk-and-cheese stand of 109 between Jonathan Trott and the fit-again Eoin Morgan. In reply, however, and in dew-laden conditions that made the ball tricky to grip – particularly for their cantankerous spinner, Graeme Swann – Bangladesh were on cruise control at 155 for 3 in the 31st over, before a calamitous run-out gifted their opponents a way back into the game. The man who had the game in the palm of his hand was the eventual – and rightful – Man of the Match Imrul Kayes, the less-vaunted of Bangladesh’s opening batsman, who slipstreamed Tamim Iqbal during a captivating 38 from 26 balls that put Bangladesh firmly ahead of the run-rate, before settling down to play the holding role with a chanceless 100-ball 60.Chanceless, that is, except for his sketchy running between the wickets. For it was his ill-advised decision to take a second run to deep square leg that ended a fourth-wicket stand of 72 with Shakib Al Hasan that looked to have broken the back of England’s resistance. In the next five overs, as Bresnan and Paul Collingwood applied the emergency brake, Bangladesh were limited to seven singles before Shakib – gasping to lift the tempo after a doughty 58-ball innings – aimed a loose sweep at Swann and was bowled for 32.Mushfiqur Rahim had been virtually strokeless since the run-out, with two runs from 18 deliveries before the re-introduction of Ajmal Shahzad persuaded him to drive expansively through the covers. But one ball later he edged a beauty on off stump through to Matt Prior, and before another run had been added, Shahzad produced another superb delivery to take out Naeem Islam’s off stump for a duck.It was a near-replica of the delivery that had earlier sent Raqibul Hasan on his way in the same manner, and with eventual figures of 3 for 43, Shahzad was England’s most successful bowler of the day. In between whiles, however, his line had been all over the shop – a performance that too many of his team-mates had been willing to emulate, not least James Anderson, who had borne the brunt of Tamim’s early onslaught, and later served up a dreadful nine-ball first over of the batting Powerplay – including five wides first-ball – to give Bangladesh real belief in the closing stages. That belief had been ignited by the swinging blade of Shafiul, who turned a bad day for Swann into a dreadful one by leathering his final over for 16, including the only six of the day, over wide long-on. Up until that point, Swann had been more preoccupied with the wet and slippery ball, with Andrew Strauss forced to intervene during a heated row with umpire Daryl Harper, but those blows brought the requirement down to 39 from 48 balls, and brought an abrupt halt to the flow of disgruntled fans who were trooping out of the stadium. This was the day that Bangladesh had been rehearsing for all through 2010. They got to know England’s cricketers and strategies through the course of back-to-back series at home and away, and having ended their run of 20 consecutive defeats with a tight victory at Bristol in their last-but-one encounter in July, they knew they had what it takes to spring a surprise. But, having collapsed in a heap to be bowled out for 58 in their last World Cup fixture against West Indies, the chance to start from the position of rank outsiders seemed to suit their purposes every bit as much as the favourites’ tag unsettled their opponents.Smart Stats

Bangladesh’s two-wicket win is only their second against England in 15 ODIs. It is also their fourth win over a Test-playing team in World Cups.

The target of 226 chased by Bangladesh is the highest successfully chased one in ODIs in Chittagong. The previous best was 222 for 9 by Bangladesh against Zimbabwe in 2009.

The 58-run stand between Mahmudullah and Shafiul Islam for the ninth wicket is the third highest for Bangladesh in ODIs.

Eoin Morgan scored his first fifty in World Cups. He now has 154 runs from ten innings at an average of 15.40. In ODIs overall, he averages nearly 39 with four hundreds and 11 fifties.

Ajmal Shahzad’s haul of 3 for 43 is his third-best in ODIs and his best performance in World Cups.

The two-wicket win is the fourth in World Cups and the third such win to come against England.

With the honourable exception of the fit-again Morgan and the unflappable Trott, England simply did not look comfortable at any stage of the day. After losing the toss and being asked to set the agenda, they shipped three tame wickets in the space of their first 17 overs, as they dribbled along to 53 for 3, and though Trott was admirable in grinding out a 99-ball 67, it was Morgan’s departure for 63 to a fine catch by Kayes at backward square that derailed their ambitions of a 250-plus total. Their batting Powerplay once again proved problematic, with 33 runs and two wickets coming in five overs, and from 162 for 3 with 11.3 overs remaining, England were bowled out for 225 with two balls of their innings remaining. The left-arm spin of Abdur Razzak was especially impressive. It was he who stunted England’s ambitions with his first-ball removal of Matt Prior (who produced one of the doziest dismissals of the tournament to date, when he set off for a single with the ball already nestled in Mushfiqur’s gloves) and he did not concede a single boundary until Ravi Bopara larruped the third ball of his final over through the covers. Even then, Razzak had the last laugh, as two balls later Bopara tried the same trick and picked out Naeem Islam in the covers. It was Razzak’s earlier spell that set the tone, however, as he and Naeem squeezed all ambition out of England’s top-order in a boa-like alliance that resulted in 19 singles and nothing else between overs 7 and 16. Strauss reclaimed his status as the tournament’s leading run-scorer in the course of his 31-ball 18, but the fluency that had been the hallmark of his previous performances was nowhere to be seen as he eventually took on a cut shot that was too close to his body, and skidded a fast edge to Junaid Siddique at slip. And then Ian Bell, nominally England’s best player of spin, produced a timid aberration of an innings, which ended with a flaccid flick to short midwicket off Mahmudullah.England’s own trump spinner couldn’t come close to matching the efforts of Bangladesh’s quartet. Right from his first over, Swann was troubled by the dew-sodden ball and struggled to locate the flight, line and length that had proved so devastating in a similar situation against South Africa last week. England regained a small measure of control when the umpires agreed to a ball-change after 21 overs, and Swann was instantly in the thick of things with a tidy fourth over that went for two runs. However, the more notable aspect of the over was Swann’s petulance when called for a leg-side wide that might have brushed Shakib’s pad. Aside from the extra run, it was a sign that England were getting very seriously rattled. In the final analysis, however, there could be no quibbling with the result. The only reason that England were even given a chance of victory was that both sides knew of Bangladesh’s tendency to collapse under pressure. Sure enough, the choke when it came was dramatic and could have been game-changing, but thanks to the guts of Shafiul and Mahmudullah, justice was served in the end.Last week Bangladesh were being showered with brickbats – literally – after a spineless surrender in Dhaka. This evening those same players will be garlanded by a jubilant nation, and with a match against Netherlands still lying in wait, they now have a real chance to propel themselves to the quarter-finals. England, meanwhile, must ride the rollercoaster for the sixth match in succession. Another slip-up, and this time it really will be the end.Match Timeline

Liverpool make contact with Van Dijk 2.0

Liverpool have reportedly made contact with Braga’s Portuguese centre-back David Carmo.

What’s the word?

That’s according to O Jogo, via Sports Witness, who claim that Liverpool are once against showing interest, with the 22-year-old expected to leave the Liga Portugal outfit this summer.

The latest report states that Braga are “very likely” to sell and that the left-footed centre-back “has already been sounded out by several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool.”

The Anfield side are said to be “following closely” as a result of Jurgen Klopp’s “recommendation.”

Braga’s chief Antonio Salvador is reportedly not interested in a sale and has stated that the clubs who are interested in acquiring Carmo’s services will need to activate his €40 million (£33.7m) release clause.

The next Van Dijk?

Klopp tried to sign  Carmo throughout last year’s January transfer window, in a deal that would have seen the Braga starlet join the Reds on loan, with a €20 million (£16.8m) option to buy.

Braga rejected their offer and about a month later Carmo suffered a nasty injury.

Carmo has started just 29% of Braga’s games this season, thanks to the ankle injury that sat him on the sidelines for 351 days.

Since his return, he has played 3-1 Europa League loss against Rangers, in which Carmo scored his side’s only goal.

In comparison to Van Dijk, Carmo has notched up some defensive numbers that, whilst similar to Van Dijk’s, just give him the edge over the Netherlands international. Carmo’s 0.7 tackles per game out do Van Dijk’s o.4 tackles per game, though both share the same clearances per game metric with an average of three.

In possession, it is an entirely different story, with Van Dijk’s 70 passes per game placing him in the elite 95th percentile, according to FBref. Carmo’s average of 34 passes per game are not so impressive, considering his position – however, both metrics can be affected by the way the team plays, with Liverpool’s possession metrics much stronger than Braga’s.

Being left-footed, Carmo would offer Klopp a slightly different option in defence. Though, if his move to Liverpool comes to fruition, he will be looking to nab Van Dijk’s spot – which will be a tough ask for the 22-year-old.

Conte wowed by Kane transformation at Spurs

As shared by football.london, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte holds a very promising belief on star striker Harry Kane.

The Lowdown: Kane shines in north London…

Since the Italian’s arrival at N17, coming after a summer being repeatedly linked with a move to Man City, Kane has now rediscovered his imperious form which attracted Pep Guardiola’s interest in the first place.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The England international, despite not getting on the scoresheet against Middlesbrough, has been fantastic in the Premier League recently – putting in match-winning displays against both Manchester City and Leeds United away from home.

Following his most recent heroics at Elland Road, Conte now believes that the 28-year-old is undergoing a transformation.

The Latest: Conte wowed by Kane…

The former Chelsea boss, speaking to the press (via football.london), says the forward is now evolving into a ‘complete’ and ‘total’ player.

“Harry is not only a number nine. He can became also a number 10 at the same time,” the Spurs coach said.

“You’ve seen the assist for Sonny which was amazing, it was incredible, but for sure, for him to continue to work in this way, he’s becoming a total player, a complete player.

“To be a number nine and 10 the same moment, it means you’re really, really one of the best strikers in the world.”

The Verdict: Exciting turn of form…

Kane’s spell of form under ex-manager Nuno Espirito Santo at the start of 2021/2022 was certainly one to forget.

However, after Conte’s arrival, it appears Spurs supporters can enjoy seeing the Three Lions superstar back to his often unplayable best.

Journalist Matt Law of The Telegraph, speaking to GiveMeSport, claimed the player is even ‘underrated’ despite his world class status, but if he continues in this vain, he certainly won’t be for much longer.
