Ismael must unleash Caleb Taylor

When Valerien Ismael took over as the new West Bromwich Albion manager this summer, the Frenchman arrived with a reputation of playing a direct and attacking brand of football, as well as being a coach who is more than willing to fast-track a club’s most promising youth players into his first-team squad.

However, so far this season, the youngest player to have featured for West Brom in the Championship is 20-year-old Rayhaan Tulloch, with the centre-forward coming on with just one minute remaining in the Baggies’ 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers back in August.

Indeed, while the likes of Caleb Taylor, Ethan Ingram, Tom Fellows and Taylor Gardner-Hickman have all made an appearance in the 46-year-old manager’s matchday squads, none of the teenagers have been awarded any game time in the league as yet.

This is a subject that Ismael addressed in a recent interview with the Express & Star, with the Frenchman stating his belief that the time has to be right for the youngsters to make the breakthrough into first-team football.

He said: “They’re always close to being involved. You see the results with the U23s since I came here. From the first day they’ve changed their way, they play the same system and they’ve won a lot of games with brilliant performances. Southampton 6-0, Norwich 5-2.

“It shows you already that everything is going in in the right direction – with the first team and the 23s. The main reason now is that a lot of the young players train with us, and they follow our principles. When they play with the 23s, it’s good to see those principles.

“We know that in some positions, if we need to, we can give chances to the younger lads. But they need to wait until the right time, and when it comes I’m sure we’ll have joy with the young players.”

Indeed, while it may be understandable that Ismael has not opted to field some of his younger talents ahead of established first-team regulars while his side are fighting for promotion towards the top of the Championship table, injuries to centre-back duo Matt Clarke and Dara O’Shea earlier this season presented the 46-year-old with the perfect opportunity to afford one of the club’s most promising academy products, Caleb Taylor, with some first-team minutes.

However, rather than doing so, Ismael instead opted to field firstly Cedric Kipre in his back three, before moving left-back Conor Townend into a central defensive position, all while Taylor sat watching on from the bench.

And, should the manager indeed wish to develop the 18-year-old centre-back who Peter Gilbert dubbed a “vocal” player as efficiently as possible, it would seem highly advisable for the Frenchman to unleash the youngster sooner rather than later, or else he may begin to feel somewhat left behind by the West Brom manager.

Indeed, with Albion’s own website describing Taylor as a “colossus at the heart of defence”, it would certainly appear as if the general consensus about the 18-year-old is that the he possesses the potential to save the club millions of pounds in transfer fees over the coming years, all he needs is an opportunity to make his mark.

Jesse Lingard looks likely to leave Man Utd

Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard appears to be edging ever close to the Old Trafford exit door after being linked with moves to both Barcelona and AC Milan.

What’s the story?

The 28-year-old has entered the final years of his current contract with the Red Devils and has reportedly rejected the offer of fresh terms amid concerns over his limited playing time.

And now, according to ESPN reporter Rob Dawson, two European football heavyweights have joined the race for his signature.

Dawson’s report states that: “Barcelona and Milan are among a host of clubs monitoring the situation, and Lingard is open to moving to either Spain or Italy as he plots the next step in his career.

“The opportunity to sign an experienced England international on a free transfer during a time when finances have been restricted because of the coronavirus pandemic has made Lingard an attractive prospect for a number of Europe’s top clubs.”

Solskjaer may be concerned

News that Lingard appears to be attracting interest from huge clubs abroad will surely leave United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feeling concerned.

The England international struggled following the Three Lions’ run to the World Cup semi-final back in 2018, but a short-term loan move to West Ham United back in January revitalised the versatile attacker’s career.

In just 16 Premier League appearances for the Hammers, Lingard scored nine goals and provided a further five assists for his teammates, playing a pivotal part as David Moyes’ charges finished in an incredible sixth position.

His outstanding performances saw Solskjaer reward him with another opportunity to impress at his boyhood club this season, deciding to sell Dan James to make room for Cristiano Ronaldo instead.

However, Lingard has found opportunities to impress extremely hard to come by in the opening weeks of the campaign, starting just one game and playing only 136 minutes of first-team football throughout 2021/22.

Despite his limited game time, the United academy graduate has still scored two goals and laid on an assist, adding further cause for frustration as he’s forced to watch on from the sidelines.

With Paul Pogba and Juan Mata also out of contract over the summer and Donny van de Beek’s future far from certain, the prospect of losing Lingard as well may be a daunting one for Solskjaer, and the Norwegian tactician could regret the creative talent’s departure.

Langeveldt ruled out for season

Derbyshire have announced that Charl Langeveldt has been ruled out for the remainder of the summer

Cricinfo staff22-May-2009Derbyshire have announced that Charl Langeveldt has been ruled out for the remainder of the summer after he aggravated an old shoulder problem playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League on Wednesday.Langeveldt returned to the Cape Cobras yesterday morning where he was told he required an immediate operation and would be out for four to five months.Derbyshire were reluctant to allow him to play in the IPL, and to make matter worse the injury came in his only outing in the competition.”Obviously this is devastating news not just for us but also for Charl,” the county’s head of cricket, John Morris, said. “Unfortunately there is absolutely nothing we can say or do which will change the outcome.”

Johnston proved his worth to Celtic

With Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou having to deal with something of an injury crisis over the first few months of his reign at Parkhead, the 56-year-old Hoops boss will undoubtedly be delighted that the tide has started to turn in his favour regarding the return of his stricken players.

Indeed, the trio of Adam Montgomery, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Mikey Johnston all made further steps in their respective recoveries in the recent 2-0 Europa League win over Ferencvarosi TC, with all three of the previously sidelined players getting more minutes behind them on Tuesday afternoon.

However, regarding Johnston in particular, it was not simply more game time the winger managed to get under his belt against the Hungarian champions, but an extremely impressive performance too.

Completed eight passes

Despite being brought into the game late in the second half, with the 22-year-old featuring for a grand total of eight minutes against Ferencvarosi, the former Scotland U21 international was full of energy upon his introduction – with Sky Sports News journalist Anthony Joseph dubbing the forward as “lively”.

It is easy to see why, as the £900k-rated man managed to have 13 touches of the ball, complete eight passes – one of which was a key pass – and create one big chance despite his extremely limited amount of time on the pitch.

The £9k-per-week winger also completed both of his attempted dribbles, won both of his two attempted duels and hit the target with his one shot at the Ferencvarosi goal.

These returns saw Johnston earn an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.7, rather remarkably ranking him as the third-best player to feature in the match.

As such, considering Liel Abada’s contrasting display, Postecoglou will certainly have a decision to make as to whether the forward deserves to start against St Johnstone this weekend. Despite the impressive performances of goalscorers, Jota and Kyogo Furuhashi, alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers, it was the 22-year-old Scot who finally proved his worth to Celtic on Tuesday, after what had an extremely frustrating campaign up until now.

United monitoring Spurs’ Ndombele

Manchester United are ‘monitoring’ Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, according to reports this week.

The Lowdown: Unhappy at Spurs

Ndombele’s move to N17 from Lyon hasn’t worked the way both parties would have hoped for but after missing the entire pre-season and the opening three league games, the Frenchman is back in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad.

He started in the draw with Rennes last Thursday and Sunday’s defeat to Chelsea, but his future remains unclear after rumours of him wanting to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium emerged in the summer.

The Latest: Pogba replacement

According to Calciomercato, United have started to put plans in place in case Paul Pogba departs the club, and Ndombele is on the list of players who could be brought in.

It is stated that a new deal hasn’t yet progressed between United and Pogba, with the France international free to talk to foreign clubs from January about joining on a free next summer.

Ndombele has three years left on his contract, and having been hailed as ‘magnificent’ by Jose Mourinho, one would think it would cost the Red Devils a big sum to pry him away from north London.

The Verdict: Blow for Nuno

Nuno has only just begun to utilise the midfielder, with Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg starting in the opening three league games of the season, so it would certainly be a blow to lose such a talent just when he is on the cusp of forcing his way back in.

A move to Manchester United, a chance to reignite his career at club currently performing better, may be exactly what he needs, but for all the struggles the midfielder has had at Spurs, it’s hard to imagine finding Nuno a more talented replacement in the transfer market – just ask his Tottenham teammates, who reportedly gushed over his talents to West Ham man Declan Rice while on England duty.

To lose the man dubbed ‘unbelievable’ by Rice before the manager has really even had a chance to utilise him would be a real shame.

Spurs’ request to sign Kessie is ‘advanced’

As per Italian news outlet JuveLive.it, there may have been a big development involving Tottenham Hotspur and their chase for AC Milan star Franck Kessie.

The Lowdown: Paratici in Kessie hunt…

Amid his ongoing contract saga, the 24-year-old has been linked with a Premier League swap to Spurs as Milan face losing one of their key players on a free transfer next summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-2/” title=”Spurs latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the Ivory Coast international could even be free to negotiate a free agent summer transfer as early as, January with managing director Fabio Paratici taking firm note of the situation.

A fresh development has now emerged as the Italian transfer chief eyes a possible coup for Spurs.

The Latest: Paratici ‘ready to satisfy’ Kessie and Milan…

As per Juve Live, Spurs and Paratici have ‘moved eagerly’ for Kessie and their request is ‘already advanced’.

In another enticing claim, it is believed that Tottenham’s new transfer chief is ‘ready to satisfy’ both the player’s and Milan’s demands in the winter market, potentially meaning they could even pay a fee.

It it also believed that Kessie is ready to leave the San Siro ‘immediately’ as Tottenham potentially jump ahead of Spurs in the race for his signature.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Lauded as ‘invaluable’ to Milan by Serie A writer Chloe Beresford, we believe that signing him in the winter market for a fee could be a great bit of business by Paratici.

Even though they could secure him on a free next summer as it stands, Spurs will arguably be paying a lot less in January given his contract situation.

The Rossoneri will want to make every penny they can from Kessie if they’re resigned to losing him, potentially putting Paratici in a very strong negotiating position.

Sutherland impressed by Symonds' resolve

Andrew Symonds has shown impressive application since being disciplined in August, according to James Sutherland © AFP

Andrew Symonds is “in a good place” and has impressed Cricket Australia with his effort and application since being dumped from the national squad, according to the Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland. However, no time-frame has been set for Symonds to return to the Australia side and Sutherland said the lack of runs Symonds had been making for Queensland was “one of the missing bits of the jigsaw”.Symonds was sent home from Australia’s ODI series in Darwin in August after he went fishing when he should have been at a team meeting. It was the last straw for the team’s leadership group, which had already been concerned about Symonds’ attitude over the previous few months.Since declaring his intentions to fight back into the Test and one-day international teams, Symonds has struggled to score big runs at Queensland, where his only major contribution was 73 in a one-day game and he has 36 from four Sheffield Shield innings. Sutherland met with Symonds recently and said he was happy with the allrounder’s progress.”We had a good chat,” Sutherland told the . “Over the last month or so, I’ve had regular chats with Andrew over the phone and I caught up with him face-to-face in Brisbane a few weeks ago, as much as anything, to be able to talk to him face-to-face and see how he’s coming along.”It was a good chat. He understands where we are up to and vice versa. He’d probably be liking to make a few more runs. I think he’s in a good place. I know talking to him and others who are close to him as he seeks to come back to full strength – mental, physical and skill-wise – that he’s progressing really well.”He’s in a good place and perhaps one of the missing bits of the jigsaw at the moment is just his on-field form. Certainly in terms of effort and application, everything is really, really good.”Symonds was not considered for the tour of India and has lost the No. 6 position in the Test side to Shane Watson, who has been a strong contributor in the first two Tests. However, there will be considerable debate as to whether Symonds will be ready to return when Australia’s home Test summer begins in Brisbane against New Zealand in late November.
