Newcastle fans heap praise on departing Diame

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been saying their goodbyes to Mo Diame after the Magpies confirmed he will leave the club this summer.

St. James’ Park is shrouded in uncertainty at the moment. No one knows if Mike Ashley will still be in charge come the beginning of the season but even more worryingly, no one knows if Rafael Benitez will still be in the dugout by then either.

What is certain now though is that Diame, along with Josef Yarney, Cal Roberts, Tyrique Bartlett, Juanito, Otto Huuhtanen and Stefan O’Connor, will leave Tyneside when their contracts expire at the end of June.

The club confirmed the midfielder’s departure on Wednesday, and despite a pretty poor final campaign, fans are full of praise for the all-action Senegalese international.

The 31 year-old racked up eight goals and three assists in 103 games for the club, including one of the greatest (flukiest) strikes ever seen against Brighton, which can you relive here.

Arsenal: Joe Willock deserves a chance in Europa League final

Everyone knew the news was coming, but it was still a damming statement when it was made official that Henrikh Mkhitaryan would not be a part of the Europa League squad.

Due to political tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Arsenal’s number seven won’t be a part of the biggest game of the club’s season in a final that the Gunners simply have to win and that has been marred by controversy before a ball has even been kicked, but the absence of Mkhitaryan does open up one silver lining.

With the winger no longer in the team, it now opens up a spot in the squad for another player to step out of the shadow and emerge as an unexpected hero in the Gunners most important match in years, and for youngster Joe Willock, he could be the man to fill that role.

The Hale End academy product has impressed whenever he has been given a chance in the starting XI, scoring three goals already this season for the first-team and playing in the final game of the Premier League campaign against Burnley, and Willock could make an impact in the final for Arsenal.

Coming off the bench, the midfielder has the ability to both create chances and score goals having scored 12 and assisted another two this season for both the senior and youth teams, and against tired legs, Willock’s pace will make him a menace to deal with in the final 15 minutes of the match.

Mkhitaryan’s absence from the final is a great injustice put upon the team by UEFA, but it opens a door for another player to become the star, and Willock could be that man.

Arsenal fans, can Willock make an impact in the final? Let us know!

3 games left: Liverpool underperformer could yet prove himself and earn his future

For the most part, Liverpool’s signings have surpassed expectations over the last few seasons. When you look at players like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, it’s fair to say that the Reds’ recent form has been driven, in large part, by the brilliant form of signings made by Jurgen Klopp.

However, not every signing over the last few years has been faultless. In fact, the Reds have had their fair share of misses as of late, and Belgian forward Divock Origi certainly falls into that camp.

Since signing for the club from Lille, the Belgian has been below par, it’s fair to say, with his development not going as planned. A mixed campaign at Wolfsburg last season failed to generate much excitement, and whilst he’s been a fairly regular member of the Liverpool matchday squad as of late, he’s hardly impressed.

Nonetheless, maybe there’s still time for him to impress. His contract expires in 2020, and so if Liverpool want to get any money for the Belgian, a sale this summer makes sense.

The only way that the Belgian will be able to avoid being in the discussions when Klopp discusses potential sales this summer is by having a strong end to the season, and with 3 Premier League games left this term, he’s running out of time.

That said, with Liverpool fighting for a Premier League title, if Origi is able to bag a winning goal to help seal the trophy, he’ll earn his place in Liverpool folklore – and likely a new contract in the process.

There’s no doubting his commitment or work-rate, but that can only take him so far. He needs to score more goals, and an important one towards the end of the season would cause most fans to forget all about his misgivings. He’s proven he’s got the goalscoring touch, with a goal against Everton of particular importance, but he needs to do it more often. Maybe, with the Champions League reaching its climax, he’ll get a chance or two on the field in the coming weeks.

Make no mistake, if he doesn’t impress between now and the end of the season, he could be facing an exit. However, a goalscoring end to the campaign could change everything.

Liverpool thoughts – do you want him to stay? Let us know below!

Liverpool: PFA Player of the Year award shows how much of a bargain Virgil van Dijk was

Since the inception of the Premier League, only three defenders have ever won the PFA Player of the Year award.

Aston Villa’s Paul McGrath was the first defensive recipient of the award back in the 1992/93 season when the defender almost led the West Midlands-based club to the league title, and 12 years later Chelsea legend John Terry was named PFA Player of the Year as his Chelsea side conceded just 15 goals in 2004/05, a defensive record still yet to be bested in the Premier League. And on Sunday night, Virgil van Dijk became the latest defender to pick up the prestigious honour.

The Dutch international has been without question one of the best defenders in world football this season, commanding the best defence in the Premier League and taking Liverpool from outside title contenders to one of the two teams who have the quality to actually go for the main prize.

Van Dijk, who has only been dribbled past once since joining Liverpool, has been a revelation on Merseyside and has taken Jurgen Klopp’s side to the next level, and it’s now crazy to think that when the defender signed for a still world-record fee from Southampton in December 2017 many fans thought the club had overspent.

£75 million is a ridiculous fee for a defender, but van Dijk’s incredible impact on the Liverpool side shows that his signing was worth every penny and some, and his latest achievement has proven that defenders will get the recognition they deserve if they step up to the plate and deliver for their team.

Liverpool fans, is van Dijk the best defender in the world? Let us know!

Excitable Manchester City fans rave on Twitter as journalist gives update on Saul Niguez swoop

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City fans on Twitter have been going wild after an update from ESPN journalist Mark Ogden on Wednesday morning.

He revealed that the club are closing in on signing highly-rated Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez, moving ahead of Barcelona in the race for the player who the Madrid team are believed to be letting go for €80million.

Pep Guardiola’s men have long been searching for a permanent replacement for ageing central defensive midfielder Fernandinho and as the original report suggests, the legendary manager better call Saul for this.

The news has caused a wave of joy amongst City supporters with one promising to scream if the rumour is true and another proclaiming that the 26-year-old Spanish international is “a world class DM.”

One other fan counteracted the general argument about what would be a “mad signing” by articulating that they too would “love” to see Saul at the Etihad Stadium next season, but he is not an appropriate replacement for the 34-year-old Fernandinho.

Jonjo Shelvey has what it takes to be a good signing for West Ham

With another win under their belts, what’s not to love about West Ham at the moment? Manuel Pellegrini has got the boys playing brilliantly and with a bit of consistency from now until the end of the season, their European aspirations may still be a possibility.

Whether you want Europa League or not, it would be a terrific achievement for West Ham to finish in seventh place, having stumbled out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, making their season looking utterly miserable at times.

Disappointment has now turned to positivity, surrounding the brilliant unveiling of the Billy Bonds Stand and the football on the pitch has improved as well.

Having spent an eye-watering £100 million on new players last season, West Ham aren’t finished yet. Clearly, they’re on the hunt for constant improvement and the players they’re linked never seem to dry up.

One of those is reportedly (as per the Daily Mail) Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, a player that seems to fit the billing of a West Ham player.

Shelvey, (who is valued at £13.5 million on Transfermarkt) still remains an attractive proposition for West Ham, despite Rafa Benitez seemingly dropping him to Newcastle’s fifth-choice midfielder.

Having made 12 appearances this season, Shelvey has gone from being the Magpies main man to someone who can’t get a game.

A transfer to the Hammers has always been discussed amongst fans but never fully come to fruition, which could all change this summer.

Although there might be doubt, what cannot be argued is the Englishman’s work-rate, determination and skill.

Getting the best out of Jonjo Shelvey would make for a very happy set of West Ham supporters because he could be the missing man in their current set-up. Alongside Declan Rice and Mark Noble, Shelvey could complete the Irons’ midfield, making the team a lot easier on the eye and giving Jack Wilshere something to think about.

The capture of the former Arsenal hasn’t worked out at all and Shelvey’s potential arrival would go some way into capturing some of the talents Wilshere can no longer provide consistently enough.

Opinion: Joel Matip’s excellent showing vs Man United symptomatic of transformation

[ad_pod ]

Joel Matip is rapidly changing perceptions at Liverpool following a fine run of form.

The Cameroon international was once written off as a donkey, a player who could hardly balance on his on two feet, a defensive liability Jurgen Klopp ought to get rid of.

An injury to Joe Gomez, however, appears to have changed perceptions on Merseyside. The once ritually lambasted defender has stepped into the 21-year-old’s position and shone in his absence.

His latest showing against Manchester United provided yet another example of how much he has improved this season, and it’s about time that he was placed in a bracket alongside Andrew Robertson as one of the biggest Liverpool bargains in recent memory.

Granted, Matip’s task was made easier by Marcus Rashford’s lack of mobility and his afternoon would have looked altogether different had the England international been fully fit.

However, Matip was defensively solid in a multitude of different situations: he was dominant in aerial battles, winning four during the match, and he supplemented his ability to read the game with a willingness to step forward into United’s half by completing two dribbles.

All of Liverpool’s defenders are forced to accept the reality that they will live in Virgil Van Dijk’s shadow for as long as he remains at the club.

But, despite being signed for a fraction of the price, Andrew Robertson is not far behind Van Dijk and, considering Matip was signed on a free transfer, it’s fair to say he was a bargain on par with the Scotland international.

That’s an opinion which would not have been entertained at the beginning of the season, but a string of solid performances culminating at Old Trafford suggest that he should be held in the same bracket as Robertson in terms of value for money signings.
