Marriott could leave Derby for Hull

Derby County forward Jack Marriott is reportedly in talks with Hull City over a summer move, having been deemed surplus to requirements at Pride Park.

The Lowdown: Marriott out of favour

The Rams survived relegation to League One last season, staying up on the final day after a dramatic 3-3 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Marriott could play no part in that game, due to him being on loan at Hillsborough from the Rams, making 12 league appearances there in 2020/21.

It appears as though Wayne Rooney sees no future for the 26-year-old with Derby and a summer exit looks on the cards, with his current deal expiring at the end of this month.

The Latest: Hull could sign attacker

According to the Hull Daily Mail, Marriott is in talks with Hull over a move, following the Tigers’ title-winning promotion back to the Championship last season.

Gavin Whyte and Dan Crowley have both left the club, so manager Grant McCann is thought to be keen on attacking reinforcements, with Marriott seen as a strong option.

The Verdict: Right time to move on

Marriott has had his moments for Derby, scoring 17 goals in 86 appearances, but now is the right time for him to enjoy a fresh challenge.

It is pointless Rooney giving a new deal to someone he doesn’t consider part of his plans, instead focusing on those he sees as key figures moving forward.

Marriott still has plenty to offer another Championship team – Frank Lampard once claimed he had a ‘big future’ in the game – so a move elsewhere should benefit all parties.

Newcastle takeover update, Benitez insight

A promising update has been dropped on the potential takeover of Newcastle United amid some enticing insight involving Rafael Benitez.

The Lowdown: Benitez wanted

As per journalist Liam Kennedy, who has been following the takeover saga closely, Benitez is wanted by the potential owners-in-waiting to return to Tyneside, as the Spaniard helped bring them to the table in the first place.

The arbitration case between Newcastle and the Premier League over the failed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group is set begin in the coming months. A positive result in that for the Tyneside club could lead to the takeover process being accelerated and, if the bid were to go through, eventually a potential change in manager.

The Latest: Takeover confidence

According to Football Insider, the latest situation with regards to the potential takeover is that all parties involved are confident that the Premier League will sanction the deal after the arbitration hearing has taken place.

An industry source has also told the news outlet that close allies to Benitez have advised him to reject any job offer from Everton and instead bide his time to return to St James’ Park, assuming that the takeover can be pushed through.

The Verdict: Hire Benitez

Regardless of whether or not the takeover can be pushed through, the Magpies must consider hiring Benitez to replace Steve Bruce, should the latter leave his post.

Many Toon fans have previously called for the 61-year-old to come back, so he would certainly be a popular appointment. Benitez also has a vast amount of experience in managing in the Premier League, with both Liverpool and Chelsea as well as Newcastle, and so he should have little problems in handling the likely abundance of riches which would come with the potential takeover.

Reports that the concerned parties are confident that a deal can be done after the arbitration proceedings is a step in the right direction in terms of trying to get Benitez back to St James’ Park.

LFC fans want Coutinho back at Anfield

A number of Liverpool supporters are keen on the idea of the Reds re-signing Philippe Coutinho following a report discussing the Brazilian’s future.

Jurgen Klopp is recharging his batteries after a tough campaign, both professionally and personally, but it won’t be long until he is back to work again. The German will be eyeing up summer reinforcements alongside sporting director Michael Edwards, looking to freshen up his squad and launch a title challenge next season.

Liverpool could arguably do with another attacking player providing more competition for places, and Coutinho has been linked with a shock return to Anfield.

The Brazil international became a superstar with the Reds, with 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances, before leaving for Barcelona in January 2018 and struggling to kick on ever since, having been sent out on loan for a spell by the Catalan giants.

Man City fans love Eric Garcia news

A number of Manchester City fans are delighted with the news that the Citizens were ready to sell John Stones until Eric Garcia revealed that he wanted to leave the club.

Stones has enjoyed a fantastic campaign after previously coming under fire from many supporters for his performances. He has made 32 appearances in all competitions, including 10 in the Champions League (Transfermarkt). In the 20 Premier League matches in which he has featured, City have conceded nine goals – in the other 15, they have shipped 17 goals.

Meanwhile, the £18m-valued Garcia (Transfermarkt) has been somewhat of a pariah at the Etihad Stadium after he revealed his intention to leave City (Sky Sports)- he will eventually do so on a free transfer. However, he may have redeemed himself in the eyes of some supporters after it was revealed by The Athletic’s Sam Lee that his desire to move on meant that Pep Guardiola kept Stones at the club.

The news was shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s fans. These supporters took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on this turn of events.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about Garcia

Newcastle move ideal for Oxlade-Chamberlain

Paul Stewart has exclusively told Football FanCast that a move to Newcastle United could revitalise Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s career.

A knee injury wrecked the first half of his season, but even since returning from that setback before Christmas, the England midfielder has just twice in the Premier League for Liverpool and was left out of the squad for the victories at Manchester United and West Brom.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has enjoyed both Champions League and Premier League success since his move from Arsenal almost three years ago but has never been a guaranteed starter under Jurgen Klopp despite making 30 appearances during the Reds’ title winning campaign 12 months ago.

The 27-year-old still has more than two years remaining on his Anfield contract but is reportedly going to be available to sign for just £17m this summer, with German giants Borussia Dortmund interested in the midfielder.

But former Liverpool man Stewart believes that staying in the Premier League could get Oxlade Chamberlain’s career back on track following his recent injury struggles.

He told Football FanCast:

“Brighton, maybe Newcastle? I don’t want to be disrespectful to them clubs, but at that price they’re the type of players they can go in for.

“I think he’s got ability Oxlade, and he has been unlucky with injuries, but that Liverpool team, to try and get in there, I don’t think they will be looking at him as one of the players that can do that.

“So, one of those clubs could revitalise one of those careers – he’s playing week in, week out if he stays fit, people will be saying £17m is a steal.”

Celtic: Ntcham set for Parkhead return

Celtic midfielder Olivier Ntcham is reportedly set to return to Parkhead after his loan stint at Marseille, meaning the Hoops will miss out on a £4.5m pay day.

Ntcham had left Celtic to join Marseille on loan in January in rather controversial circumstances, as Andre Villas-Boas had offered to resign as a result of the signing. It now seems as if the Frenchman’s ill-fated spell at Stade Vélodrome is set to come to an end in the summer.

Sampaoli doesn’t want Ntcham at Marseille

French outlet RMC Sport (via Sport Witness) have reported that Marseille boss Jorge Sampaoli has made his feelings clear on several players’ futures, including Ntcham.

Marseille had the option to sign him permanently in the summer for a £4.5m fee, but that is a profit that Celtic will now miss out on with the Frenchman set to return after Sampaoli’s decision.

During his time at Marseille, Ntcham has made only four Ligue 1 appearances, playing twice in the cup. His last appearance came against Montpellier earlier this month, but he played just a single minute (as per Transfermarkt).

Ntcham value falling; bad news for Celtic

Ntcham is currently rated at £3.15 million (Transfermarkt) and his value has only fallen since early 2020. That isn’t a good sign at all for the Bhoys, as it doesn’t seem like he has a future in Glasgow and the profit the club could earn from an exit is slowly but surely declining.

Ntcham’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2022 and he was once linked with multiple Premier League sides. With that in mind, we feel the Hoops should be desperately shopping him around to teams south of the border this summer, or they risk losing out on a decent pay day as his deal ticks down next season.

Schar provides recovery update

Fabian Schar says that he hopes to feature for Newcastle in the final games of the season after issuing a positive update on his recovery.

The 29-year-old was expected to be out for ‘several months’ after sustaining a torn knee ligament in the 3-2 win over Southampton in February (via nufc.co.uk).

A Sky Sports report at the time speculated that he’d played his last game for the club given that the Swiss international is out of contract at the end of the season.

However, it seems his recovery may have exceeded expectations – Schar initially aimed to return in time for the European Championships in June, but now hopes he can have a say in keeping Newcastle up.

Schar: ‘I will do everything’ to return before the end of the season

“I’m quite happy where I am after seven weeks since my surgery,” he said in a Q&A on Newcastle’s Twitter account.

“The last five or six weeks I was working hard in Switzerland. The only aim I had was to do as many hours for the rehab as possible.

“I think I am on the right way. Still there is a bit to do and it’s going to be tight for some games this season.

“It’s my aim to help the team at the end of the season and I will do everything to try and do that but I can’t exactly say if it is possible or not.”

Schar has made 13 Premier League appearances for the Toon this season. He has averaged 1.6 tackles, 3.1 clearances, 0.8 blocks and 3.6 accurate long balls per match (via WhoScored).

Transfer Tavern verdict

The injury outlook is finally getting brighter for Newcastle. Miguel Almiron returned at Brighton, and Allan Saint-Maximin made his comeback off the bench in the draw with Tottenham at the weekend.

Most importantly, top scorer Callum Wilson looks to be back in contention for a critical visit to Burnley on Sunday.

Schar’s return can’t come soon enough, given that Steve Bruce had to deploy Emil Krafth and Paul Dummett, full-backs by trade, in a back three at the weekend.

In other news, Alan Shearer picked out an ‘excellent’ Newcastle performer against Spurs.
