Liverpool fans frustrated at Wilson update

Some Liverpool supporters are frustrated that Harry Wilson could be sold for £10million, having missed the chance to sell him for more last summer.

The Welshman doesn’t appear to have future at Anfield, following a nomadic career to date.

Wilson has enjoyed spells on loan at the likes of Derby County, Bournemouth and Cardiff City, among others, being deemed surplus to requirements by Jurgen Klopp.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

In fact, the 24-year-old has still only made two first-team appearances for Liverpool and now is surely the time for him to leave the club permanently.

According to The Mirror [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Wilson will be available for £10million in the current transfer window, should anyone wish to sign him.

That is less than this time last summer, when Liverpool reportedly turned down a £12million bid from Burnley for the Welshman’s services.

Hjelde keen on Leeds switch

An update has emerged on Leeds’ pursuit of Celtic defender Leo Hjelde, regarding the player’s thoughts on a potential move.

What’s the talk?

According to Football Insider, Leeds United have offered a contract to Celtic central defender Leo Hjelde, with his deal at the Scottish giants expiring next summer.

The report claims that he is interested in signing for the Yorkshire-based club, who believe he has huge potential to become a Premier League star in the future.

Bielsa will be buzzing

Bielsa will be buzzing with this news as it appears as though a transfer for Hjelde could be on the cards. The player wants to make it happen and Leeds are seemingly serious about completing a deal, given that they have already proposed a contract to him. Whether it happens this summer or not is a moot point as he is out of contract next year, which means that the Whites could bide their time and snap him up for a compensation fee.

Either way, Leeds would be bringing in a player with real potential to bolster the academy ranks. He would not be an addition with the first-team in mind immediately, allowing Bielsa to take his time with the defender and work with him on the training pitch with no expectations in the short-term. The centre-back only turns 18 next month and still has his entire career ahead of him, which Bielsa could love as he has the chance to help him fulfill his potential.

Earlier this year, Ross County boss John Hughes called him the next Virgil van Dijk and revealed that Leeds wanted him in January before the loan move to his club. He said:

“Leo is going to be the next Van Dijk – trust me on that.

“The quality he has shown, the physical challenge, playing real men’s football and standing up to it – it’s been a wonderful experience for Leo.

“Before he came, Leeds United were after him. I think he had to sign an extension to his contract for the loan to go through.”

Hjelde has already experienced first-team football at a decent standard. He played 11 games on loan under Hughes at Ross County in the Scottish Premiership, averaging a dismal WhoScored rating of 6.47. His performance levels at the age of 17 at senior level are nothing to read into, though, and it is more important that he gets the experience under his belt.

Therefore, if Leeds can get him in the current window then a loan move to a local Football League club where he could play regular first-team football whilst still being able to train with Bielsa two or three times a week could be the perfect scenario. This would allow him to get the first-team experience to develop his game whilst also still being able to learn from the Argentine head coach on the training pitch.

Hadlee and Reid delighted with New Zealand's mental strength

New Zealand’s ability to overcome the hiccups of their bomb-disrupted tour to Pakistan, the inability to prepare properly due to rain in the West Indies and their controversial end to the one-day series, was a special delight from today’s first Test

Lynn McConnell25-Jun-2002New Zealand’s ability to overcome the hiccups of their bomb-disrupted tour to Pakistan, the inability to prepare properly due to rain in the West Indies and their controversial end to the one-day series, was a special delight from today’s first Test victory in Barbados for New Zealand selection chairman Sir Richard Hadlee.Holidaying on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Hadlee had to rely on CricInfo coverage to keep up with the news throughout the match but was delighted to be woken this morning by a newspaper reporter to be told the news of New Zealand’s 204-run victory.”All those disruptions could have affected them psychologically but they have overcome them and made history.”The side is going from strength-to-strength and is well-balanced. All the bowlers in the attack now are wicket-taking bowlers,” he said.Having some pace in Shane Bond’s speed was also a decided bonus for the team.”Shane Bond [who took his first five-wicket haul in the second innings], Ian Butler and Daryl Tuffey are all very inexperienced,” he said. The trio have only 17 Tests between them, but Bond achieved his career-best figures in the victory while Tuffey had his best performance two Tests earlier in the victory over England and Butler, his best, in the second Test against England. In their 17 Tests the trio have now taken 66 wickets between them at an average of 29.63.This is a far cry from the position New Zealand found themselves in when injury decimated the side on their tour of South Africa at the end of 2000.Hadlee said captain Stephen Fleming now had options in attack and an ability to keep at batsmen with pace, something that had not always been available with younger bowlers, in terms of experience, coming into the attack when others had been injured. As a result he was now in a position where if Daniel Vettori couldn’t get a breakthrough with his spin, he could go back to one of the fast bowlers to achieve it.”He now has the armoury to use effectively to bring about success. They are inexperienced, but they are gaining all the time and will get better for it,” Hadlee said. Now that this victory has been achieved Hadlee said it was time to wrap up the series win.It was a chance for the side to make a statement about where they are at in terms of their development.”Win one – lose one” had for too long been part of New Zealand’s results.Another win is what the team should be looking for and at the very least they should ensure that if they can’t win then they should try for a winning draw, he said. The victory had also highlighted the recent move by New Zealand Cricket to look after those players who could be classified as Test specialists who, because of the nature of modern touring, don’t have the warm-up games to prepare for matches.”Something different has to be done to prepare Test players. This has proved a point for the preparation undertaken. You can’t put a monetary cost on its value,” Hadlee said.New Zealand Cricket’s operations manager John Reid said the win was significant for the side.”It consolidates our third position on the world Test championship and is a very positive result.”He backed Hadlee’s comments about the preparation that had gone in for Bond, Robbie Hart and Mark Richardson.”It was an innovative approach but it has been very beneficial,” he said.Like Hadlee, Reid was most impressed with the mental strength the side had shown after the one-day losses, especially early in the tour.”They were pretty determined going into the Test series,” he said.Reid also hit out at news reports that were too quick in their judgmental approach of New Zealand’s position at the end of the first day.Such reporting needed to be kept in context within the conditions in which the match was being played.New Zealand had gained a position that allowed it to go on and win the game from the work done on the first day, but back here all the reports had been about what a disastrous first day it had been, Reid said.”Stephen Fleming played a man of the match role with his batting by giving the side an edge by making the one big score of the game,” Reid said.By rushing in and claiming New Zealand’s effort was sub-standard before the West Indies had batted in similar conditions, the critics had been proven to have made their judgments too quickly.

Spurs: Serie A warrior perfect for Ten Hag

Daniel Levy could kickstart a perfect summer at Tottenham Hotspur by doing two things…

First, he needs to find his next manager as it’s been over two months since Jose Mourinho was sacked from his post. Several names have been linked to the role and they’ve faced blow after blow.

One intriguing candidate is Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag, who has been regularly mooted throughout their arduous managerial search.

According to ESPN, the North London outfit are reassessing candidates and the Dutchman is thought to be under consideration. He has been described as someone who is “perfect” and “ticks all the boxes” by football.london’s Alasdair Gold.

This is because he fits the two key criteria reportedly set out by the Lilywhites chairman, as per the Guardian.

Spurs’ new manager must be attack-minded in terms of tactics – Ten Hag’s Ajax side has averaged a whopping 2.71 goals per game – and they must be willing to develop the club’s young prospects – Ajax have an average squad age of just 23.8.

If he were to arrive, then it would be wise for the club to provide him with some backing in the transfer market in order to get Spurs back on track.

And recently, one of their mooted targets was given one hell of a glowing endorsement that should have both Levy and Ten Hag salivating from the mouth.

Gazzetta dello Sport have linked the Premier League side with a move for Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella this summer, though they face competition from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Former Spurs striker Jurgen Klinsmann compared the 25-cap Italy international to N’Golo Kante, he said (via football.london): “He has the same function as Kante – but the Inter player is in the development phase.”

After the success Ten Hag had with Frenkie de Jong, the 24-year-old dynamo could thrive under his stewardship in N17.

Valued at a whopping £60m by CIES, Barella played a crucial role in helping steer Inter to their first Serie A triumph in over a decade, he provided three goals and nine assists in the league, whilst ranking near the top for tackles (1.6) and key passes (1.4) per game, as per WhoScored.

It’s no wonder he has been lauded as a “warrior” in the past as his “extraordinary” qualities make him seem like the perfect box-to-box midfielder.

Just imagine the damage he could do under an attacking coach like ten Hag, so Levy and Paratici must ensure they bring the pair to North London this summer.

They could well form a dream partnership at the club.

AND in other news, Paratici risks Mourinho 2.0 at Spurs with “special” 47 y/o, he averaged 1.18 league goals a game in 2020/21…

Saints eyeing Livramento

An update has emerged on Chelsea’s Tino Livramento, regarding Southampton’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Goal, Southampton are one of a number of teams interested in a deal to sign Chelsea youngster Tino Livramento this summer. He has one year left to run on his current contract at Stamford Bridge and a host of clubs are attempting to lure him away from London.

The report claims that RB Leipzig, Brighton, Aston Villa and Milan are also tracking the teenager alongside Southampton, whilst Chelsea are said to be trying to tie him down to a contract extension to keep him at the club heading into next season.

Ralph would love it

Martin Semmens could strike gold for Southampton swooping up Livramento from Chelsea this summer. The young defender appears to be a talented prospect on paper and the Saints chief could be bringing in a star for the future by signing him.

He won Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year award at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, which shows how highly the London giants rate him internally.

Livramento was also named on the bench for Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Premier League at the start of May, although he failed to make his debut during that match. This shows that Thomas Tuchel saw enough in him to suggest that he could be good enough to step up to the first-team level if he needed to call upon him against Pep Guardiola’s side.

The 5ft 6 starlet posted some eye-catching statistics from right-back at youth level for Chelsea. In 26 appearances for the club’s youth sides in the season just gone, Livramento chipped in with three goals and 10 assists from full-back to highlight his attacking quality. He has proven that he can stand out at the academy level and, therefore, he has the potential to make an impact in the senior game in the future.

This is why Semmens must sanction a deal for the 18-year-old if there is any chance of the south coast side landing him this summer. He could be a much-needed addition in the short term as well as the long term for the Saints as the full-back situation at St. Mary’s needs urgent attention. Kyle Walker-Peters is the only first-team, senior, full-back set to be on the club’s books beyond the end of this week, with Ryan Bertrand poised to leave.

Therefore, Livramento could come in and bolster the club’s academy ranks whilst also providing cover at right-back for Walker-Peters. That could then alleviate the need for Southampton to spend millions of pounds on an established senior right-back to come through the door as a back-up to the ex-Tottenham defender.

This is why Ralph Hasenhuttl would love the move, as he could work with the youngster on the training pitch and develop a potential first-team star, whilst also having cover in a problem area.

It’s a deal that Southampton must push to get done.

AND in other news, Semmens must sanction Saints deal for “special” £17k-p/w goal machine, Ralph needs him…

Rangers fans love new home kit

Many Glasgow Rangers fans were delighted as the club revealed their new kit ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

The Gers enjoyed a magnificent campaign last time out as they won the Premiership for the first time in 10 years while going unbeaten in the division. As such, they will be competing in the Champions League third qualifying round next season, and they will be also be attempting to defend their domestic league title.

As they try to do so, they will need a kit befitting of their recent success, and judging by the reaction of many supporters, they may have just that next season. On Saturday, the 55-time Scottish champions revealed their new home kit for the coming campaign. As usual, it is predominantly blue, but there is also gold lettering to celebrate their silverware last time out.

The kit was revealed on the club’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from Gers fans. These supporters took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on the “stunning” new strip.

Celtic: Edouard moving closer to an exit

Ange Postecoglou is barely through the door but Celtic have already dealt the Australian with a colossal blow as he gears up for his Parkhead arrival.

The Hoops are faced with a situation where a number of their players could leave and with the transfer window on the verge of opening, that reality is edging ever closer.

What’s the word?

Odsonne Edouard has been primed for a Celtic exit for a while now.

He’s been linked with a plethora of Premier League clubs with West Ham and Arsenal showing an interest in the Frenchman over the last six months.

However, it looks as though the striker is set for a reunion with Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City instead.

The Times reported this weekend that the Foxes had won the race to sign Edouard in a £15m deal this summer.

The deal is set to be sanctioned as soon as their new manager arrives.

Colossal blow

Edouard may have downed tools towards the end of his time with Celtic but there is no denying that this is a monumental blow to the club’s ambitions.

The Bhoys endured a trophyless campaign and if they want to earn parity with Rangers as soon as possible they will need a goalscorer as fierce as the 23-year-old in their squad.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-ajer-howe-lampard-wilshere-gauld” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

If there was one shining light from the 2020/21 campaign for Celtic then it would be Edouard. It has always been the Frenchman when it’s come to beating the goalkeeper and without him, you have to fear the worse.

He scored 22 goals last term, taking his tally in the famous green and white to 83 in 168 outings.

The attacker has been their top scorer in all three seasons he’s enjoyed at Paradise, taking their attack to a new level after the departure of Moussa Dembele.

£15m is a decent sum for a player whose contract expires in a year’s time and it should enable them to invest healthily in the transfer window.

That being said, it is never easy replacing someone who scores so many goals. Celtic will no doubt have contingency plans in place but as Albian Ajeti and Patryk Klimala will tell you, it’s hard to fit in.

Ajeti has only bagged six goals after arriving from West Ham for £5m while Klimala left Glasgow after just a year in Scotland.

The Celtic hierarchy will need to have a plan in place here. Losing Edouard is quite possibly the biggest blow supporters could receive this summer.

AND in other news, Celtic can replace Elyounoussi by signing 42-goal “speed demon”, he’s got “everything”…

Pope steers Border nearer to final

Steven Pope struck his third first-class century on Friday to take Border tothe brink of their third successive Supersport Series final as they movedinto a dominant position halfway through their encounter at Buffalo Park

MWP09-Mar-2001Steven Pope struck his third first-class century on Friday to take Border tothe brink of their third successive Supersport Series final as they movedinto a dominant position halfway through their encounter at Buffalo Park.At the close, Pope was unbeaten on a blemish-free 104, made off 209 ballsand including 13 boundaries, while Laden Gamiet had yet to score. That leftBorder on 235 for four in their second knock, 274 ahead after they hadbowled out Boland for 153 on Friday morning. After slumping from their precarious overnight 87 for five to 106 for nine, courtesy of a three-wicket blitz from Piet Botha, Boland had last man inHenry Williams, who smashed 33 off 28 balls, to thank for getting themwithin 39 runs of Border’s first innings total and ensuring they got onebatting bonus point, to leave the points race even on five each.By the close, though, matters were anything but even, with Border looking tobat the visitors out of the contest and succeeding thus far, thanks mainlyto Pope, who added 128 with skipper Pieter Strydom (63) for the fourthwicket.Should Border win, and it seems likely with Geoff Love, who took four for 26in the first innings, sure to prove even more effective as the game wearson, they would be virtually out of sight of the two teams looking toleapfrog them into the final, given that Easterns, who trailed them by threepoints going into the match, are fighting for their lives against NorthWest. That would give the men from East London the chance of making it third timelucky in the final, appropriately against Province, who outclassed them intheir first appearance in the showpiece match two seasons ago.

Neil Fairbrother defies the years to show his class

Despite the dreadful early spring weather, the CricInfo Championship has started well for the batsmen. Just two days into the summer, nine centuries have been scored. Still, one would have to travel up and down the country throughout the rest of the year to see a better knock than today’s innings from Neil Fairbrother. The diminutive left-hander made a breathtaking 179, including a partnership of 98 with an injured Gary Keedy who batted with a runner throughout.Fairbrother’s knock was an innings that had everything. He combined skilful running between the wickets with deft turns to the leg side, and added a collection of hearty Lancashire thumps. Now into his 20th season as a first-class cricketer, Fairbrother began his knock cautiously. Timing the ball sweetly throughout, he got underway with some tidy flicks to leg. A partnership with Joe Scuderi blossomed, and Fairbrother began stroking the ball to the fence, turning the ball expertly to fine-leg and hitting powerfully behind square on the off side. The innings looked in danger of falling away when a mini-collapse left the visitors 280-9. There were doubts as to whether Gary Keedy would bat after badly injuring his back on the opening day. Keedy did his duty however, and walked gingerly to the crease with Ryan Driver to run for him.Fairbrother was unbeaten on 93 at the fall of the ninth wicket. At first, he was content to pick up singles toward the end of the over, leaving Keedy to face as few balls as possible. When he reached his century, Fairbrother was given a warm ovation from a reasonable crowd at the County Ground. The applause was to become more grudging, if still appreciative, as the next hour progressed.Fairbrother changed his attitude once he had completed his century.Determined to get his county a match-winning lead, he was content to launch the ball to all parts. His footwork had been solid from the outset, moving way across towards off stump. As he progressed, his feet started to dance down the wicket, crashing the ball through the infield at will. There was a sense that Fairbrother’s efforts could come to an end at any time. His partner, rendered almost immobile, batted like a boy forced into a school match. With no backlift and little footwork, Keedy blocked bravely, and sneered as the increasingly desperate Somerset attack strayed wide. Most of the time, Keedy was left to graze rigidly at square-leg, with Driver putting in a fine effort as runner. Fairbrother has always been fast, but it defies logic that a 37-year-old is able to scamper and turn with such ferocity. He called loudly and definitely, startling poor Driver who may have hoped for an afternoon nap. If he was still in the England team, Fairbrother would be amongst the fittest.Toward the end of his knock, the boundaries began to flow. He blasted Joe Tucker over long on for six, and went onto the back foot and pulled with such venom that the two men on the leg side boundary were barely able to move before the ball struck the fence. Sauntering down the track, he also belted the ball through the covers with skill. After reaching his century from 138 balls, he added a further 79 from 62 balls, striking 27 fours and a six. Keedy eventually fell, and the County Ground rose in appreciation of a marvellous knock from one of the most valuable county cricketers. Fairbrother is a fine exponent of the county game, and this innings was a wonderful advert for the CricInfo Championship.
