Everton: Fans unhappy with Seamus Coleman’s comments

Everton’s performance against Wolves on Sunday left a lot to be desired.

The Toffees were outplayed by the Midlands outfit, losing 3-0 following goals from Raul Jimenez, Diogo Jota and Leander Dendoncker. The Toffees managed just 45% possession and mustered a paltry two shots on target – this was a display which Carlo Ancelotti will not have been happy with.

Seamus Coleman’s comments after the match displayed how disappointed he was with the match. The 31-year-old said following the final whistle that Ancelotti will not accept showings like this one and that the club’s players can no longer hide behind managers as they have done in the past.

This has attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters, but it is fair to say that many are not overly impressed – they believe they have heard the same thing many times before. They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

West Ham: Fans react as club rejects £5m offer for Sead Haksabanovic

A lot of West Ham fans have reacted to the news that the club have rejected a bid for their 21-year-old midfielder Sead Haksabanovic.

Swedish media outlet Fotboll Direkt report that the Premier League side turned down an offer of around £5m from an unnamed club for the Montenegro international.

The Hammers signed the player back in August 2017 from Swedish side Halmstads BK and was acquired as a player for the future, as per Transfermarkt. At Halmstad he had a very solid record for such a young age, scoring 13 goals and picking up 10 assists in 70 appearances.

However, he has only been given two chances in the first team at West Ham and he has had to accept either playing for the under-23s or being sent out on loan. He has gained experience in Spain with Malaga and now finds himself back in Sweden on loan at IFK Norrköping, where he has scored nine goals and managed eight assists in 36 games, as per Transfermarkt.

Here is how these Hammers fans have reacted to the news:

Spurs boss Mourinho right to exercise ruthlessness on Tuesday

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Jose Mourinho brought his own brand of ruthlessness to north London on Tuesday night.

As Tottenham Hotspur fell 2-0 behind to Olympiacos in a Champions League game that they needed to win to secure qualification to the knockout stages, there was a familiar air of disappointment.

Under Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs had been too passive this season, too willing to let bad performances slide and too tactically inflexible to fix it.

But on Tuesday evening, Mourinho pulled an old trick out of the bag. He made a first-half substitution.

This is not the first time the Portuguese has done this. He replaced Eric Bailly with Juan Mata in the first-half when Manchester United manager against Newcastle United and the Spaniard had a decisive impact, scoring for his side. He did similar for Chelsea, taking off both Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joe Cole after less than 30 minutes against Fulham, sending on Didier Drogba and Damien Duff.

It worked. Eriksen was in superb, game-changing form and provided a gorgeous assist for Harry Kane in the second half, floating in a perfectly-weighted free-kick from the left flank; the England international simply nodded the ball in. Another free-kick, this time from a more central position, whistled just past the post, with the Dane in the mood.

Mourinho took the time to apologise to Dier after the game, insisting that the change had nothing to do with his performance and everything to do with his desire to make a tactical switch.

Of course, it paid off, but this speaks to a wider issue that Mourinho is attempting to address.

This was a message that mediocrity will not be tolerated and that there is now a win-at-all-costs mantra being installed at Hotspur Way and beyond.

Spurs have fought back under Pochettino before, of course they have, but it all too regularly came down to individual brilliance; think Lucas Moura in Amsterdam or Kane against West Ham.

On Tuesday, Mourinho rolled the dice and came up with two sixes, while also sending a stark warning to his players: this is his team now and he has no room for any passengers.

Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen’s future may have been decided.

Southampton fans react badly after Stuart Armstrong speaks out on 2-1 defeat

Southampton fans have reacted badly to Stuart Armstrong’s post-match comments, following the 2-1 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

The 17-cap Scotland international didn’t really go into much detail about the loss, simply stating how the game played out, which has prompted a furious reaction from some Saints fans on Twitter who seem tired of empty soundbites coming from the team.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men suffered their eighth defeat of the Premier League campaign with defeat against the Toffees, a result that leaves them in 19th place – just one point off the bottom of the table.

No team has conceded more goals than Southampton’s 29 concessions, while the south coast side have scored just 11 themselves – the third-lowest total in the top-flight.

Armstrong’s comments didn’t really contain anything that should’ve triggered supporters, but his words have sparked an angry reaction from some fans who seem tired of the right things being said, but no positive changes actually happening.

Let’s take a look at some of the tweets…

Liverpool’s Trent-Alexander Arnold slammed by England fans against Kosovo

With a fantastic 7-0 win against Montenegro, England confirmed their qualification for Euro 2020.

It meant that they had secured their place at next year’s tournament with one game to spare, which would be against Kosovo. With the Balkan nation having lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic, it meant that there was nothing riding on the clash other than England potentially securing top spot. Gareth Southgate still put out a strong side, though, with the likes of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling starting.

The Three Lions prevailed 4-0 in Pristina in a match that had historical importance for the hosts. For England, it was not a great performance despite their eventual comfortable victory. Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold was particularly poor, losing the ball a team-high 14 times.

The national team’s supporters were far from happy with his performance, and they took to Twitter to share their thoughts. You can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Christian Benteke and 3 other forwards who were allergic to scoring

Late in a game against Manchester City recently the hosts Crystal Palace gained a corner and on came Christian Benteke from the bench to do what he used to do better than most.

Striding purposely among the melee of players inside the penalty area he mimed to the corner-taker exactly where he wanted it – right on his forehead – and the delivery was duly inch perfect.

The Belgian rose like a salmon and planted the firmest of headers powerfully towards the far corner of the goal only to see Ederson stretch out an arm and palm the ball onto the crossbar and out to safety.

Benteke crumpled to the ground in sheer dismay and he did so because he knew it would continue: the barbs, the chuckling. He knew he would still be regarded by the cruellest of contradictions: a goal-scorer who couldn’t score.

Harshly put this is akin to a heart surgeon incapable of performing heart surgery but it wasn’t always the case for the 28-year-old. At Aston Villa he averaged just shy of a goal every two games scoring 49 in 101 appearances. He was also, for what it’s worth, unplayable on his day. In a single season with Liverpool the expensively-purchased forward was hardly prolific but nine Premier League goals is still a semi-acceptable number considering the abrupt arrival of Jurgen Klopp suddenly plummeted him down the pecking order.

In late April Benteke opened the scoring against Arsenal and the relief etched onto his face was understandable because his header ended a remarkable drought that has lasted 358 days. If he believed that was a turning point to his woes however he was very much mistaken because ever since that sunny spring day another drought has emerged, one that persists to this day.

It’s hard to imagine how a proud international forward deals with that but there is just a tiniest sliver of consolation it is this: within the annals of the Premier League he is not alone.

Paul Stewart (Liverpool)

A handful of others went longer without finding the net but Stewart is included here due to the strange quirk of scoring on his Premier League debut for the Reds then managing to draw a complete blank for the rest of his disappointing spell there.

A solitary strike in 32 games is a pitiful return for a player who pulled up proverbial trees for Manchester City which prompted Graeme Souness to shell out £2.3m for him (a lot of money in 1992). A series of loan spells ensued, featuring none other than Palace, before Stewart ended a once glistening career with Workington.

Richard Cresswell (Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City and Stoke City)

How much more difficult is it to score in the top flight compared to the lower leagues? Ask the former England under-21 man because he knows better than anyone.

In the Championship, Cresswell averaged roughly one goal per three full ninety minutes, a solid if largely unspectacular return.

Whenever he was called upon to trouble elite defences however the goals would disappear faster than an ice cube in the desert. A woeful run of 45 fruitless games stands out for all the wrong reasons, and his overall Premier League record finished at just two in 66 outings, both of which were scored in the 1999/2000 season.

Can Crystal Palace finish in the top 7 or even higher this season? Their chances of doing so are rated in the video below…

Luis Boa Morte (West Ham United)

The Portuguese international’s goal-shy spell in East London is well worth gawping at in disbelief even if technically he was a wide attacking threat rather than an outright front man.

In five seasons and 109 games with the Hammers, Boa Morte scored precisely twice and if the total blank drawn from his final campaign startles that is nothing compared to the combined efforts of 2007/08 and 2008/09. Games played = 56. Goals – nought. Shots = quite a lot, probably.

A far cry from his nine Fulham goals during the 2003/04 campaign.

Newcastle’s Joelinton could benefit from the recall of Dwight Gayle

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Newcastle have struggled going forward this season with new signing Joelinton still finding his feet and provide the level of ammunition you’d expect from a £40m striker, but the recall of Dwight Gayle to the side could provide a solution to their problems.

On the chalkboard

Steve Bruce has had a tough start to managerial life at Newcastle and a big reason for his return of only two wins from eight games is the fact his side have scored five times.

Their lack of success in front of goal is a consequence of a handful of intertwining factors, but Joelinton’s relatively slow start – with only one goal to boast from eight league games so far – is clearly a factor.

The Magpies have pace in the squad with Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin on the flanks, but too often there are a lack of bodies in central areas and so the attack breaks down, as reflected by the fact both players are yet to complete a cross this campaign.

Whilst Joelinton is certainly a strong target to aim for due to his aerial presence, he is better suited to knocking the ball down to teammates and linking up play, as his average of 1.1 key passes this season and 1.5 key passes last term indicates.

Perhaps all he needs is a strike partner to get the best out of him.

Renewed chance

Newcastle’s goal threat looks devoid of quality with Yoshinori Muto, Andy Carroll and Joelinton scoring just two goals between them this season, but Dwight Gayle has proved his poaching instinct throughout his career and is deserving of another role of the dice.

Newcastle stood firm on their asking price of £20m in the summer, having impressed last year in a loan spell at West Brom in which he bagged 24 goals.

Check out the best reaction you’ll see to Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd in the video below…

In his season at the Baggies he built up a strong partnership with Jay Rodriguez, with the duo teaming up to score on eight occasions, and it is possible Gayle could do the same with Joelinton.

Joelinton, meanwhile, provided five assists last term but could have had many more due to the number of chances he creates, as evidenced above, helping his strike partner Andrej Kramaric on the way to 22 goals for Hoffenheim in 2018/19, with the pair playing with each other on 31 occasions.

Gayle should work well with him also, as he would be well-suited to playing just off the tall striker, pouncing on his knock-downs in and around the area to score in his classic poaching style.

Joelinton has been praised for his ability to hold the ball up and bring teammates into play, and with a strike partner to feed off in Gayle he might just begin to justify why the club broke their transfer record to secure his signature.
