Ant Botha claimed five of Sussex’s seven remaining wickets, as Warwickshire preserved their first-division status in emphatic fashion on the final morning at Hove. Needing another 61 runs to make Warwickshire bat again, Sussex were instead bowled out for 172 in their second innings in 21 overs of the morning session. Botha, the left-arm spinner, trapped James Kirtley and Carl Hopkinson lbw in consecutive overs, and sent Ed Joyce back the same way after Dwayne Smith had been caught behind off Boyd Rankin. At 150 for 8, the only question remaining was whether Sussex could avoid the innings defeat, but Botha ensured that they fell two runs short.Mal Loye and VVS Laxman batted from start to finish on the final day at Taunton, as Lancashire secured the most comfortable draw imaginable against Somerset. The pair had resumed on 87 for 2 overnight, with some work still to do to guard against an innings defeat, but they took their stand to a whopping 247 before the captains agreed to an early finish. Loye finished unbeaten on 151 and Laxman 113.Durham secured their second County Championship title in style, as Nottinghamshire were condemned to an innings-and-52-run defeat at Chester-le-Street. Westwood ton makes Worcs pay

Not only did Worcestershire break the golden rule of never inserting at Edgbaston, but they then produced a bowling performance so full of juicy half-volleys and succulent long-hops that Warwickshire were able to gorge themselves with gratitude

ScorecardIan Westwood has all but sealed his place in the side with an unbeaten 101•Getty ImagesWhile it may be customary to offer gifts when visiting neighbours, Worcestershire may reflect they were generous to a fault on the first day of their visit to Birmingham. Not only did they break the golden rule of never inserting at Edgbaston, but they then produced a bowling performance so full of juicy half-volleys and succulent long-hops, that Warwickshire were able to gorge themselves with gratitude. In defence of Vikram Solanki’s decision, the pitch was so unusually green it was barely distinguishable from the rest of the square. Had his bowlers maintained anything like a decent line and length, batting might have proved hard work. But they didn’t. Though Matt Mason was tidy enough, Gareth Andrew and Imran Arif both conceded over five per over, with Richard Jones’ undermining the odd threatening delivery by delivering too many poor balls. It was not hard to see why the team are adrift at the foot of the Division One table without a win all year.”We didn’t bowl as well as we could,” admitted Steve Rhodes, Worcestershire’s director of cricket “and the pitch didn’t do as much as we thought it would.”Ian Westwood was the biggest beneficiary of Worcestershire’s largesse. The Warwickshire captain, who was averaging just 21 in first-class cricket this season before this match, compiled the seventh first-class century of his career and his first in 15 months.Very nicely he played, too. His chanceless innings has, so far, contained 18 boundaries, the majority of them driven through the covers with some panache. Though there were periods of playing and missing, Westwood maintained his concentration and looked far more compact than previously this season. Having taken 89 balls over his first half-century, his second took just 57 deliveries. It was a timely innings from Warwickshire’s captain. Not only are his side desperate to claim a win that would shore-up their first division survival hopes, but Westwood was in dire need of such a performance to silence those who question his place in the side. This century might just have saved his position. He has so far added 100 for Warwickshire’s second wicket with Ian Bell. Looking hungry for a long innings, Bell adopted a safety first approach, but received enough poor balls to ensure he was never bogged down. Jonathan Trott, who returned from England duty only the night before the game, was not required but came into the side in place of Rikki Clarke, who has a minor knee injury. The only moment of joy for the visitors came when Ant Botha played around a fine delivery that nipped back through his gate from Jones.Warwickshire may still struggle to squeeze out a result this week, however. Rain cut 48 overs from the day and there was no play after 3.15pm. It was hard to escape the impression that Worcestershire had given up some time earlier.Warwickshire are winning the battle off the pitch, too. The clubs are vying for the services of a number of players, but Warwickshire have drawn first blood after Naqaash Tahir, the subject of an approach from Worcestershire, verbally agreed a new two-year contract to remain at Edgbaston. He will sign within the next few days. Both clubs are also interested in Yorkshire seamer Ajmal Shahzad and Devon left-arm spinner Chris Metters. Warwickshire are also considering an approach for former England seamer Matthew Hoggard, possibly as a player-coach to succeed the departing Allan Donald. There is a possibility of further transfers as counties seek to plunder Worcestershire. Warwickshire, like most counties, would be interested in Stephen Moore and Kabir Ali if they became available. Moore has a clause in his contract allowing him to speak to other counties if Worcestershire are relegated, while Kabir is contracted until the end of 2010.

Moyes wants James Tarkowski at West Ham

Speaking to Football Insider, a West Ham United source has now dropped an interesting claim involving Burnley defender James Tarkowski.

The Lowdown: Newman eyes new defender…

Angelo Ogbonna’s cruel injury blow has now prompted West Ham to weigh January reinforcements at the back, as per reliable reports.

Indeed, The Evening Standard claimed that West Ham manager David Moyes will receive sufficient financial backing to bolster key areas of the squad, namely a new striker, centre-back and possibly Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard.

Ogbonna, a mainstay and one of the few players to start every Premier League game so far under Moyes, injured his anterior cruciate ligament during the 3-2 victory over Liverpool at the London Stadium last weekend.

Links to the likes of Nikola Milenkovic, as well as Championship duo Rob Dickie and Dael Fry, have emerged in the days since that match.

The Latest: Moyes personally eyeing Tarkowski…

As per an Irons source, speaking to Football Insider, Moyes has personally set his sights on another central defender in Burnley ace Tarkowski.

The 28-year-old will apparently be ‘on his radar again’ in January after multiple attempts were made in past seasons.

This comes as his current club prepare to lower his asking price from £35m to £20m, coming as a potential boost to Moyes, and it is believed the player himself ‘would jump at the chance’ to join West Ham.

The Verdict: Good option?

Out of West Ham’s transfer options, we believe that Tarkowski comes as the next best thing after Milenkovic, mainly because the Serbian is younger (24) with greater potential for sell-on value. However, Calciomercato recently claimed that Fiorentina have deemed their centre-half ‘untransferable’ mid-season, so perhaps the Hammers should now turn to Tarkowski as an alternative.

Lauded as ‘physically superb’ by Burnley manager Sean Dyche (The Athletic), the English defender would come as a solid partner for Kurt Zouma.

According to WhoScored, out of West Ham’s entire squad this season, only the Frenchman has managed a higher rate of clearances per 90 (5.3) than Tarkowski (5.1) in the Premier League. However, the Clarets man reigns superior over every Irons defender in terms of aerial duels won per 90 on average (four), supporting the view that he is a colossal presence.

As Burnley lower their price tag to £20m, we believe that he could now be an attainable option for West Ham, and one which would greatly reinforce Moyes’ backline.

Kyle Walker-Peters must be dropped from Southampton’s team to face Watford

After getting knocked out of the Carabao Cup in midweek against Chelsea, Southampton turn their attention back to the Premier League this weekend with an away clash against Watford on the horizon.

With just one win, five draws and three defeats under their belt with nine games played, Southampton are currently sat in 16th place in the Premier League table with eight points, whereas Watford are in 14th place with two more points than the Saints, setting things up for a big game at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

Looking ahead to the match, one Saints player that featured against Chelsea that we feel shouldn’t be in the starting XI to face Watford at the weekend is Kyle Walker-Peters.

Walker-Peters, who started and played the full 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge, managed to misplace seven of the 23 passes he attempted, made no key passes, failed to accurately complete any of the four crosses he attempted, failed to accurately complete any of the two long balls he attempted, won just seven out of the 17 duels he was involved in and failed to make even one tackle, ultimately earning himself a rather uninspiring overall match rating of 6.4/10, making him one of Southampton’s lowest-rated player on the day according to SofaScore.

This shows that he very much struggled to have any sort of impact in the game against Thomas Tuchel’s side, either from an attacking or defensive sense.

So far this season, Walker-Peters has made just seven appearances for the Saints across all competitions.

Southampton originally signed Walker-Peters on a loan deal back in the 2020 January transfer window from fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur before securing him on a permanent deal in the following summer window in a deal worth a reported fee of £12m.

Since then, the 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £16.2m according to Transfermarkt and has been described as “very professional” by Hasenhuttl, has gone on to make 52 appearances for the south-coast club across all competitions in which he has managed to score one goal and provide four assists in the process.

Moving forward, we feel that Walker-Peters should not be in the starting XI at the weekend to face Watford, whether it be in the left-back position where he’s played in the five Premier League appearances he’s made so far this season, or on the right-hand side where he featured against Chelsea.

Saints could have next Romeu in Finnigan

Despite having an average squad age of 26, Southampton have a handful of players who are in and around the twilight years of their careers.

One of those is 30-year-old midfielder Oriol Romeu, who signed for the club back in 2015 from fellow Chelsea for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, the Spaniard has made a total of 221 appearances for the Saints prior to their Premier League clash against Burnley this afternoon, scoring six goals and providing four assists in the process.

With the midfielder’s current contract at St Mary’s set to expire in 2023, we feel there’s a chance that Romeu could leave the club by that point, but we also believe that the Saints could already have an ideal replacement for him if he does leave.

That man is 18-year-old Ryan Finnigan, who has been described as an “excellent” player by the club’s academy director Matt Hale. A product of Southampton’s youth system, he has made 15 appearances for their under-18 side, scoring one goal, with one assist in seven games for the Saints’ B team.

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is apparently a big fan of Finnigan, who has made one senior appearance for Southampton, which came during their 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup back in January.

Moving forward, if the teenager can continue developing in Southampton’s youth sides and make the most out of any future opportunities he gets in the first team, we think he could well go on to become a regular for them in the future as a potential long-term replacement for Romeu. That might save the club millions of pounds in potential transfer fees trying to sign a new midfielder, as well as seeing him join a long list of players to come out of the club’s youth academy to go on and have big careers in the Premier League.

Pagon, Lambert earn Jamaica first-innings points

A round-up of the seventh-round matches of the regional four-day competition

Cricinfo staff21-Feb-2009Half-centuries to Donovan Pagon and Tamar Lambert helped Jamaica take first-innings points over the Windward Islands on day two in Dominica. In reply to the Windwards’ 261, Jamaica finished on 264 for 3 with Pagon (81) and Lambert (75 not out) the chief contributors. Pagon, who played two Tests against South Africa in 2005, hit 11 fours in his 163-ball innings and together with Lambert ensured Jamaica kept the Windwards in the field all day. Jamaica resumed on 15 for 0 and lost Xavier Marshall for 27 with the score 44, after which Brenton Parchment added 81 with Pagon. Pagon was the third man to fall but Wavell Hinds and Lambert added 38 before the close.Lendl Simmons was released from the West Indies’ squad for the second Test and immediately did his claims for a maiden Test cap no harms with a century at the Providence Stadium. Simmons, who has represented West Indies in eight ODIs, demonstrated his aptitude in the longer version of the game with 282 for the A team against England in last month’s tour game and, pitted against Guyana, scored his sixth first-class century. Put in to bat, Trinidad and Tobago finished the opening day on 279 for 3 with Simmons batting on 148 at stumps in an unbroken stand with Keiron Pollard (33). Guyana, who have not won in five attempts, got the early wicket of Justin Guillen, chasing one from Trevon Garraway to third slip, after which rain held up play for 15 minutes. Simmons and his captain Daren Ganga (50) put on 169, Ganga batting facing 115 balls and hitting four fours and a six. Simmons was dropped on 92 by Leon Johnson at point off Garraway and reached three figures with a single to cover off the same bowler. Pollard and Simmons were building a threatening 60-run partnership when bad light stopped play. The Combined Campuses & College’s spin duo of Ryan Austin and Kavesh Kantasingh tied down the Leeward Islands on the first day’s play in Barbados. After electing to bat, the Leewards finished on 249 for 9, with Austin and Kantasingh sharing eight wickets. The opener Montcin Hodge top-scored with 65 for Leewards, while Omari Banks (45), Tonito Willett (45) and Kieran Powell (36) got starts. Kantasingh started the slide when he bowled Kieran Powell for 36, snapping a 69-run opening stand. From 72 for 1 at lunch, Leewards lost Runako Morton for 2, caught behind off Kantasingh. Austin joined in by disloging a 50-run fifth-wicket association between Tonito Willett and Omari Banks and the rest of the wickets fell at regular intervals.

Rajasthan elections postponed to March 1

The Supreme Court has ordered that the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) elections, which were originally scheduled for February 22, be held on March 1

Cricinfo staff20-Feb-2009The Supreme Court has ordered that the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) elections, which were originally scheduled for February 22, be held on March 1. The order comes as a boost to Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman and RCA president, who had sought relief from the apex court on the issue.Modi, who was close to the previous state administration in Rajasthan, has been facing resistance at the local association from a group of dissidents ever since the government changed hands after an election last year. Local police have also lodged a series of cases against Modi over the last month on various charges, including fraud and forgery. The dissidents, meanwhile, amended the RCA’s constitution with the backing of the state administration and called for elections on February 22. The apex court, however, upheld a plea by Modi who questioned the election process as per the amended constitution and sought the court’s intervention to ensure a free and fair election. The court also appointed an independent observer to conduct the elections.”My stand gets vindicated,” Modi told reporters in Mumbai. “All the illegalities done by the other group by changing the constitution have been set aside by the Supreme Court. I’m extremely happy.”

Leeds have a new academy star in McKinstry

After saying goodbye to one of Leeds United’s most popular and impactful stars of the past decade, Marcelo Bielsa will be wondering where he might find the club’s new Pablo Hernandez.

At his best, the Spaniard was creative and exciting to watch, with his nimble footwork and eye for goal being a huge part of the Whites’ resurgence in the last couple of years.

As per Whoscored, in the 2018/2019 campaign in which he scored 12 and set up another 12, he averaged a whopping three key passes and 2.7 shots per game in the Championship.

In 175 games for the club, the veteran netted 36 goals and provided another 41 assists, a remarkable feat given that Hernandez was well into his 30s when he joined up at Elland Road.

And while those massive shoes are hard to fill, one academy sensation who may be hoping of bringing that same bit of Hernandez magic to Elland Road, is Stuart McKinstry.

The 18-year-old is similarly versatile in that while he can play as the number ten behind the striker, he can also play slightly deeper in central midfield as well as out wide too.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay is a big fan of the teenager, even going so far as to saying that he’s close to the first-team picture at the club on an episode of The Next Big Thing podcast, saying: “It’s development for him at the moment, but you’ll be noticing that quite a few younger players are starting to go out of Leeds on loan now.

“McKinstry’s still in the building and I think is most likely to stay in the building for now, and those that (Marcelo) Bielsa feels are closest to the first-team picture are the ones that he wants to stick around.”

And, in a separate article for The Athletic, Hay’s analysis of the starlet during the Whites’ U23s clash against Manchester United last season raises some serious comparisons between McKinstry and Hernandez in their style of play.

He said: “Leeds lost 1-0 after Henri Kumwenda’s red card in the second half but McKinstry shone while the game was 11-vs-11, cutting the opposition open with his speed of thought and balance, and showing a willingness to carry the ball.

“Those attacks demonstrated an ability to work in tight spaces and fashion chances from difficult positions — the wing play Bielsa looks for at first-team level.”

Hay added: “McKinstry is very much in the pack, a player Leeds always reference when you ask who might make the step up next.”

Standing at 5 foot 10, McKinstry is only a couple of inches taller than Hernandez, but that ability to “work in tight spaces”, and carry the ball before delivering an intelligent final pass is exactly what the former Leeds hero was especially good at.

At just 18, the young Scot has got all the time in the world to develop under Bielsa’s tutelage, and given all the struggles that Rodrigo has endured at Elland Road when playing in that role just behind Patrick Bamford, there is a real opening for a Thorp Arch academy star like McKinstry to take advantage.

McKinstry is more than a decade younger than the disappointing Rodrigo, and as Hay himself says, he’s in that bracket of players who “might make the step up next”.

The teenager could develop into the Whites’ long-term successor for Hernandez, and at the same time, overtake Rodrigo in the process over the years to come.

Meanwhile, Leeds may already have their next Kalvin Phillips in this star…

Hutton makes Rangers transfer claim

Alan Hutton has given his reaction as Glasgow Rangers managed to keep hold of their best players in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Players linked with moves

A number of players were linked with moves away from the Light Blues during the window.

The Daily Mail had reported that Everton had made a late £8m bid to try and sign Nathan Patterson, while Marcelo Bielsa wanted to sign Ryan Kent for Leeds United and Alfredo Morelos apparently agreed personal terms with Porto at one point.

The Latest: Hutton on transfers

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton, who is now a pundit after playing as a right-back for the Gers, has been left applauding Steven Gerrard’s team for managing to keep their best players at Ibrox after the window shut:

“I am surprised.

“I think Steven Gerrard will sleep a lot easier tonight knowing he’s kept hold of all his big-name players.

“If you sell two or three of those players to balance the books for the Champions League situation, you’re making it more difficult to retain the title. You’re getting rid of your big stars.

“As we sat here today and he’s kept them all, it’s absolutely brilliant. All Rangers fans will be breathing a sigh of relief after that.

“It’s good to see they’re heading in the right direction of the people. The people they have brought in have done well, along with the people that are already there which is excellent.

“The one main thing I’m happy about is Nathan Patterson staying.

“When that was really ramping up and the bids were coming in, I thought it might be enough for Rangers to sell.

“I’m glad to see him stay and hopefully he can kick on now.”

The Verdict: Great news

It is certainly great news that the Gers were able to keep hold of the likes of Patterson and Kent among a number of their best players.

When clubs from the Premier League come calling especially, it can be difficult for Scottish Premiership sides to turn down their advances, as Celtic have found out recently by selling Odsonne Edouard to Crystal Palace.

However, Gerrard will now have the best possible chance to win the title once more with the current squad, and also have a good crack at the UEFA Europa League, potentially increasing the values of the aforementioned players if they do eventually move on.
