Sold for £0: Arsenal must rue losing star who’s now worth more than Nwaneri

Arsenal’s academy setup has been responsible for the development and progress of countless talents over the years, many of which have made a huge impact on the first-team squad at the Emirates.

Bukayo Saka is undoubtedly the biggest example in recent years, emerging into the side as a teenager, before rapidly capturing the hearts of the fanbase in North London as a result of his displays.

The 23-year-old, who’s been missing over the last few months through injury, has made over 250 appearances for the Gunners, scoring on 67 occasions – still sitting at the top of the charts for goals and assists combined in the squad for 2024/25.

His absence has undoubtedly contributed to Mikel Arteta’s side’s recent drop, which saw them suffer a painful 1-0 defeat against West Ham United yesterday, inflicting a real blow on their Premier League title ambitions.

However, Saka’s setback has allowed another academy star to feature in his place, staking his claim for a regular starting role even upon the England international’s return to action.

Ethan Nwaneri’s rise at Arsenal in 2024/25

Back in 2022/23, youngster Ethan Nwaneri emerged off the substitutes’ bench against Brentford to make his league debut for his boyhood side at the tender age of just 15 – making him the youngest player in the division’s history.

However, given his youthful years, he’s had to bide his time for an opportunity to flourish under Arteta but has been given his chance to shine over the last couple of months.

The now 17-year-old has made 25 appearances this season, scoring in each competition he’s featured in, including the Carabao Cup, Champions League and Premier League.

Nwaneri has often featured off the right-hand side in Saka’s absence over the last couple of months, softening the blow with his performances which have been way beyond his teenage years.

However, despite his excellent form, he’s still valued lower than one player who slipped through the net in North London, showcasing what the Gunners have missed in allowing him to depart.

Every 2024/25 Premier League club's best youngster

There are plenty of promising youth products in the top flight.

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 22, 2025 The former Arsenal ace who’s worth more than Nwaneri

As previously mentioned, Arsenal has been the home to numerous young stars over the years, as demonstrated by their tally of seven FA Youth Cup wins – the third most of any side in history.

However, not every one of those talents will make it into the professional game, with only 0.012% of all youngsters going on to make an appearance in England’s top flight.

Despite the low odds, one player who the Gunners previously allowed to leave as a teenager did manage to achieve such a feat, with Michael Olise starring after his release from the North London outfit.

The Frenchman was let go by the club, subsequently moving to city rivals Chelsea, but their decision to do so now appears to be a huge mistake given his progression over the last few years.

Olise, who now features for German giants Bayern Munich, has endured a rapid rise to stardom, including in the Premier League, after his £8m move to Crystal Palace from Reading back in 2021.

Crystal Palace's Michael Olise

The 23-year-old racked up 90 appearances for the Eagles, scoring 16 times and registering 25 assists, catching the eye of Vincent Kompany as the Belgian forked out £50m for his signature last summer.

It’s been a move that has allowed Olise to take his career to the next level, notching 20 combined goal contributions in 2024/25 to date, leading to analyst Ben Mattinson dubbing him as “world-class”.

However, as a result of his showings in the Bundesliga, his market value has skyrocketed, with Transfermarkt now valuing the youngster at £54m – with his subsequent value two times higher than Nwaneri, who’s valued at £25m.

There’s no denying that the 17-year-old has a huge future in the game, potentially being a key player for the Gunners for many years to come should he continue on the same trajectory he’s currently on.

However, there must be an ounce of regret with Olise, given his rapid rise of his own, but unfortunately, he will always remain a case of what could’ve been had they kept hold of him as a teenager.

Wolves reach agreement to sign deadline-busting £17m+ Lemina replacement

Looking to beat the clock ahead of the deadline, Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly agreed a deal to sign a midfielder who could replace Mario Lemina in a deal worth over £17m.

Wolves transfer news

Whether the headlines have named Axel Disasi, Kevin Danso or Coady, it’s been no secret that Wolves have been after another central defender ever since welcoming Emmanuel Agbadou at the beginning of the window. Up until the deadline, the Midlands club have faced more and more frustration, however, with Danso eventually choosing Tottenham Hotspur, Disasi seemingly closer to Aston Villa and Coady off the table.

In pursuit of Premier League survival, Vitor Pereira’s side have a matter of hours left until the window slams shut and they’re denied the chance to welcome what would be a crucial addition. It’s not just potential incomings taking place at Molineux either, with Mario Lemina also threatening to steal the headlines on the exit front and reportedly closing in on an exit to join Galatasaray.

As the former captain departs, he could yet finally make room for a fresh arrival though. According to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Wolves have now reached an agreement to sign Marshall Munetsi having initially opned talks with Stade de Reims in pursuit of the defender.

In a deal set to be worth over €20m (£17m), Wolves are reportedly confident that they’ll get the reinforcement that the so desperarely need. At 28 years old, the experienced Reims defender represents an option who should need little time to make his mark and develop into a viable option for Pereira in the remainder of his side’s campaign.

Munetsi can reunite with Agbadou

In one January swoop, Wolves could end the window with two players who already know each other well in Munetsi and Agbadou, who played together at Reims this season. Replacing Lemina at the same time, the 28-year-old will be looking to make an instant impact and build on what has been an impressive campaign at times.

As the stats show, Munetsi should also provide more of an attacking threat than Lemina in what should be a boost for Pereira’s side in the face of Jorgen Strand-Larsen’s recent injury.

The midfielder may not be the end of Wolves’ business just yet either, given their aforementioned need for another central defender. Just who that will be remains to be seen, however.

For now, the Midlands club are at least on course to welcome a much-needed replacement for Lemina as he heads to Galatasaray. All being well, Wolves will hope to have their new signing on show as soon as their next Premier League clash – a difficult trip to Anfield to face league leaders Liverpool.

INEOS given unanimous backing in "transformational" Man Utd stadium update

Turning their attention away from troubles on the pitch, INEOS have reportedly received unanimous backing in what has been described as a “transfomational” Manchester United stadium update.

INEOS given green light

When Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS first arrived with the likes of Dan Ashworth in tow, there was more optimism than there had been for a long time at Manchester United. The influence of the Glazers had been weakened and INEOS arrived fresh full of ideas, new transfer strategies and the funds to awaken England’s biggest tiring giant threatening to sleep.

Amazing Hojlund upgrade: £58m "monster" now wants to sign for Man Utd

Manchester United are looking to bring in this new attacker before the transfer window closes.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 28, 2025

Almost a year on from the news of their partial takeover, however, and to say that INEOS haven’t exactly been making positive strides would be an understatement. Funding has been cut in a number of areas outside of the matchday squad, including reportedly to the Manchester United Foundation whilst ticket prices have continued to rise.

Meanwhile, on the pitch, those increased ticket prices have not proven worthwhile with Ruben Amorim’s side sat a world away from European qualification and on the end of countless results to forget. But, just as a positive is needed more than ever, Ratcliffe has received some good news.

As relayed by Mike Keegan of The Daily Mail, INEOS have now been given unanimous backing in their plan to build a new Old Trafford from the local authority. Officials at Trafford council unanimously backed the plans which will create a new 100,000-seater stadium.

Dubbed “transformational” by the council, INEOS will now begin their search for a consultant team in an attempt to bring their plan to life and play their part in regenerating the area. It is also believed that the new project will add £7.3bn to the economy and provide over 90,000 jobs and 15,0000 more homes in what should only be seen as something to celebrate for the first time this season.

New Old Trafford a key step for Man Utd

Leaving their failure on the pitch to one side for a moment, Manchester United have been playing at a historic ground which is gradually becoming a decaying antique whilst the likes of Everton and Tottenham Hotspur move on into impressive, modern stadiums. With Old Trafford leaking at the same rate as Amorim’s backline, INEOS had to put plans together to solve at least one problem and it seems as though a New Old Trafford has taken precedent.

Speaking about the proposed plan, Councillor Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration at Trafford council, said: “I am delighted these plans have been approved by the council executive. As the report says, this is one of the most significant opportunities for urban renewal in Trafford and the results will be great for the area and the surrounding region.

“This is a hugely exciting project and working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create thousands of new homes, new neighbourhoods, and a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium.”

West Ham now plotting move for "amazing" £40m gem who may replace Fullkrug

With Graham Potter seemingly on his way to replace Julen Lopetegui, West Ham United are now reportedly plotting a move to sign a £40m young forward who could do the same to Niclas Fullkrug.

West Ham transfer news

Just when it looked as though Julen Lopetegui was turning things around at the London Stadium with a run of four games without defeat, Liverpool and Manchester City arrived to defeat the Hammers by a combined scoreline of 9-1 in what was the final straw for the Spaniard. In his place looks increasingly likely to be Graham Potter, who could make a return to management for the first time since being sacked by Chelsea in 2023.

In a move that must go to plan for Potter after his Chelsea failure and long wait to return to the technical area, the Hammers could turn towards the transfer market and instantly back their new manager. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, West Ham are now plotting a move to sign Conrad Harder from Sporting CP in a deal worth €50m (£42m) this month.

European giants hold talks with agent of £27m West Ham player over move

ByBrett Worthington Jan 7, 2025

With Chelsea and Arsenal also interested in the 19-year-old, West Ham will undoubtedly have to put together a convincing pitch to win the race and secure Harder’s signature for years to come. And that’s where Potter’s arrival and the Hammers’ hopeful rise as a result of that could pay dividends.

Conrad Harder for Sporting Club.

What should also provide those at the London Stadium with a much-needed boost in pursuit of the forward is that Sporting are reportedly demanding £40m rather than Harder’s €80m (£67m) release clause.

"Amazing" Harder would solve West Ham's striker problem

With Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen currently sidelined, West Ham will be forced to turn towards summer signing Fullkrug to step up once and for all following a slow start to life in the Premier League. Alas, at 31 years old, the former Borussia Dortmund forward is far from a long-term option or perhaps even a short-term replacement for Bowen in current form. Instead, that’s where Harder could make an instant impact.

The 19-year-old has risen to stardom at Sporting this season, scoring nine goals and assisting a further six in 29 games in all competitions. Earning impressive praise as a result, Harder’s start to life in Portugal was dubbed “amazing” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig back in November.

At just £40m, West Ham could land one of the bargains of the window and a player with plenty more to come by securing Harder’s signature this month.

Boost for Le Bris as new injury update from Sunderland emerges on 24 y/o

Sunderland have received a big injury boost regarding a “really sharp” player ahead of their Championship clash with Norwich City this weekend.

Latest Sunderland news

The Black Cats are back in action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming the Canaries to the Stadium of Light for an important clash near the top of the table.

Regis Le Bris’ side sit fourth in the Championship heading into the weekend action, still only five points adrift of current leaders Sheffield United, thanks in part to their impressive 3-2 win away to Swansea City last time around.

Sunderland’s form has dipped a little in recent weeks, having topped the table earlier in the campaign, so it’s now a case of staying in the mix and not allowing some injury problems to derail them.

The Black Cats have had to make do without various influential players throughout the campaign, while Jobe Bellingham also served a suspension after his red card against Queens Park Rangers, but a positive update regarding one player has now emerged.

Sunderland receive injury boost

Speaking ahead of the visit of Norwich on Saturday [via The Sunderland Echo], Le Bris confirmed that Sunderland attacker Ian Poveda is fit enough to play a part in matches again, having overcome a longstanding injury issue:

“Sometimes you just need time to find the connection with the project and club. Ian is now in a really good place. He’s not ready to play a full game but can be a sub and help us in short spells in games.”

Leeds forward Ian Poveda.

This is great news for Sunderland, with Poveda’s time at the club not gaining any momentum at all yet, having completed a permanent transfer to the Stadium of Light during the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old is yet to start in the Championship this season, making just three appearances totalling 44 minutes, but the hope is that he is now ready to kick on. This is a player who excelled for Leeds in a Premier League clash with Manchester City back in 2020, with Danny Mills saying of him:

“I thought he was superb when he came on. He looked really sharp, full of energy and kept the ball really well. He cause a lot of problems for Mendy in the second-half and I think that is why Pep Guardiola decided to make the change.”

Admittedly, it doesn’t feel like Poveda is going to play a huge role for Sunderland for the time being, with Le Bris easing him back into the fold rather than giving him too many minutes, but having him as a strong option is a huge boost.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 18, 2024

At 24, this is now an important point in Poveda’s career, with the winger having a sporadic time of things, being loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday from Leeds last season, for example.

He now needs to kick on and become a genuinely influential figure for Sunderland, playing a positive role in getting them back into the Premier League.

Bayern eyeing Burkardt in summerMainz hoping to keep strikerDepth behind Kane is lackingFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , Mainz forward Jonathan Burkardt has appeared on Bayern's transfer radar ahead of the summer. The 24-year-old is described as "one of several" options the Bundesliga giants are looking at to serve as a back-up to chief goal-scorer Kane. Burkardt is considered affordable and is also favourably represented by the same agency as Bayern skipper Manuel Neuer.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

After previously enjoying a breakout season in 2021-22, Burkardt has come storming back in 2024-25 following a long-term injury that affected his two previous campaigns. His 15 Bundesliga goals have Mainz third in the table and seriously in the hunt for unprecedented Champions League qualification, but he will shortly enter the final two years of his contract. Even if Bayern don't formalise their interest, Burkardt isn't likely to be short of suitors, with Bayer Leverkusen, Eintracht Frankfurt and unnamed Premier League clubs said to be pursuing him.

WHAT MAINZ SAID

"I can imagine that European Cup matches with Mainz 05 would be a motivation for Jonny," sporting director Niko Bungert recently told German media, referencing the club being on course to dine at the continent's top table come the autumn.

GettyWHAT NEXT?

If not Burkardt, a striker is an important part of Bayern's recruitment puzzle ahead of next season. Thomas Muller, due to turn 36 in September, has occasionally filled in for Kane, but the squad's attacking make-up beyond the 32-goal England captain is primarily wingers and No.10-type players. Mathys Tel had served that role in the first half of the season, but was loaned to Tottenham Hotspur in January and wasn't replaced.

Narine and company face the best spin hitters in IPL 2022

Big picture

Rajasthan Royals vs Kolkata Knight Riders. Two teams with six points each, two teams looking to bounce back from defeats in their most recent games, and two teams with certain broad similarities this season.Take death bowling, for instance: both teams have struggled at this aspect of the game. They have averaged just one wicket per innings in this phase, and their economy rates are near-identical, with KKR (12.97) faring marginally worse than Royals (12.78).On Monday, these attacks will come up against two of the most formidable death-overs ball-strikers in the competition: Shimron Hetmyer (262.00) has the best strike rate of any batter who has faced at least 20 balls in this phase this season, while Andre Russell (196.55) isn’t too far behind. These two teams also, perhaps, boast the best spin attacks in the competition. Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin have both enjoyed superb starts to the season. Sunil Narine has been at his miserly best – his economy rate of 5.00 is the best of any bowler to have sent down at least five overs this season. But Varun Chakravarthy has been quite a way off, meaning KKR’s middle-overs bowling has lacked its usual air of double-barreled suffocation.KKR will hope Chakravarthy can return to something like his best form on Monday, given that Royals (average of 73.66, scoring rate of 9.20) have collectively been the best batting team against spin this season. Two of the biggest reasons for that are Sanju Samson, who has the best strike rate against spin (223.33) of any batter (min 20 balls) this season, and Jos Buttler, who has also gone at a healthy 152.00 against that style of bowling.Opposition teams are always well-advised to dismiss these two as early as possible; for KKR, it might be doubly important to do so.1:18

Ashwin loves bowling to left-hand batters, but this isn’t always the case when he comes up against KKR. Narine (SR 225.71) and Nitish Rana (163.57) are two of the three quickest-scoring left-hand batters against offspin in IPL history and both have superb records against Ashwin.Narine has scored 60 runs off 22 balls (SR 272.72) against him while being dismissed once, while Rana has clattered 74 off 35 (211.42), without being dismissed.Expect KKR to promote Narine if the stage of the game allows it. Royals could also combat these match-ups by giving Ashwin the new ball and getting one or two of his overs out of the way early. This will also allow Ashwin to attack Venkatesh Iyer, who has a far more typical left-hander’s record against him: 14 runs off 15 balls, no dismissals.
