Eddie Howe has identified a dream target to replace Sandro Tonali at Newcastle United, according to a new transfer update.

The Magpies drew 2-2 away to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday evening, which wasn't the best result after also losing 1-0 at home to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week. It could be used as a poor excuse, but there is an argument to say that Newcastle's focus may have been affected a little by Tonali's 10-month ban from football for breaching betting rules while at AC Milan, prior to moving to St James' Park during the summer transfer window.

The Italian will play no further part in the remainder of the season in what is a significant blow for anyone of a Magpies persuasion. The 23-year-old came in as someone who was looking to make Howe's side an even greater force, but they are now back to square one and have to pretend he isn't even part of the squad for the time being.

Numerous players have been name-checked as potential replacements for Tonali in the January transfer window, with Kalvin Phillips, Ruben Neves and N'Golo Kante all seen as targets for Newcastle in recent days, as they look to battle on without their star summer signing. It looks as though someone else is the player who Howe would most like to see arrive at St James', however, according to a new claim regarding their search for a new midfielder.

According to a fresh transfer update from Calciomercato, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe wants to sign Scott McTominay, seeing the Manchester United midfielder as a "dream" signing and "the Magpies' priority" to come in for Tonali. The Scot may have been in some good form recently, including scoring twice in a dramatic home win against Brentford earlier this month, and the update says he can leave Old Trafford for St James' Park if a large offer comes in.

McTominay's stats show that this is the case, with only four Premier League starts coming his way this season, and the likes of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes and Sofyan Amrabat often preferred to him. A box-to-box midfielder who combines dynamism with a steady stream of end product, it is easy to see the 26-year-old slotting in effectively to Newcastle's midfield and dovetailing nicely with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, so he could be a strong signing in January.

McTominay has even been described as a "special" signing by Jose Mourinho in the past during their time together at United, saying of him:

"He’s a special character, a special personality that a team in a negative moment needs. Do my other players have that mentality? Not all of them. Everybody is a different person. Scott McTominay is a kid with a special character, very humble, aggressive in a positive way, brave, he’s a special kid."

Whether United would be willing to sell to a rival midway through the season remains to be seen, but at 26, he could be heading there just as his peak is arriving. If Howe wants him more than anyone, the manager should also be trusted.

وأضاف: “إذا قرر الزمالك عدم استكمال بطولة الدوري، سيكون انسحابا من الدور الثاني للمسابقة، وهنا تتطبق المادة 52 من اللائحة التي تقول، تبقى نتائج الفريق المنسحب في الدور الأول كما هي بالنسبة للفرق الأخرى، تلغى نتائجه في المباريات التي شارك فيها بالدور الثاني، يعاد ترتيبه على هذا الأساس”.

وتابع: “أما حالة هبوطه للدرجة الأدني، ستكون إذا انسحب في مباراة الجولة الأخيرة من بطولة الدوري المصري، ويعتبر مهزومًا ويُغرم ماليًا ويهبط للدرجة الأدنى”.

كما كشف حجاج، أن نادي بيراميدز يحق له شكوى نادي الزمالك، بسبب الانسحاب من مباراة الأهلي، لافتا إلى أنه توجد 10 أيام أمامه لتقديم الشكوى إلى لجنة التظلمات أولًا في اتحاد الكرة المصري ثم لجنة الاستئناف ثم مركز التسوية الخاص باللجنة الأولمبية ثم الاتحاد الدولي.

The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell spotted a worrying sign that the defender may have suffered another injury blow.

After Carlos was forced off in Aston Villa's frustrating 3-0 defeat at Anfield against Liverpool, Tanswell took to Twitter to reveal what he spotted on the visiting bench, saying: "Diego Carlos has just taken a seat on the bench. Still in his full kit and limping."

Of course, another injury to a defender is the last thing that Emery needs, too, given that Tyrone Mings is already set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a significant knee injury. The fact the Brazilian returned to the bench rather than staying in the dressing room for treatment could be a good sign, but his obvious limp certainly isn't.

Solving that problem, the Midlands club signed Clement Lenglet on loan late in the summer transfer window, but the Barcelona man cannot cover for two absences.

It does seem as though Villa fans can hope for the best, with Emery commenting on Carlos' injury after the game, saying, via Tanswell: "The injury of Diego Carlos (frustrated him most) It's not a big injury but it changed our gameplan."

The hope will be that the forthcoming international break gives the former Sevilla centre-back the chance to recover in time for Villa's next Premier League clash, which sees them square off against Crystal Palace.

Returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Carlos has slotted in next to the likes of Pau Torres and Ezri Konsa in a mixed start to the season for those at Aston Villa.

It's clear he was United’s best signing of the season and there is no doubt the Dutchman could land a dream partner for him in Guehi.

The Palace gem also shone during the 2022/23 season and demonstrated similar qualities to that of Martinez. He ranked first out of the Eagles squad for accurate passes per game (50.8) while averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 3.6 clearances per game.

These figures are almost like for like and suggest they could forge an excellent partnership at the heart of the United defence.

His physicality could also stand him in good stead should he join United, with former teammate at England U21 level, Josef Bursik, describing him as an “absolute tank” and still aged just 23, the best years of his career could come at Old Trafford.

With four senior caps for England, the youngster is heading in the right trajectory to becoming one of the finest centre-backs in the Premier League.

Joining the Red Devils should accelerate this transition, especially if he plays alongside Martinez, who has so far claimed the title of the finest defender at the club.
