Shaheen Afridi five-for gives Khyber Pakhtunkhwa first points

Sohail Khan and Sharjeel Khan star as Sindh get past Central Punjab

Danyal Rasool02-Oct-2020Khyber Pakhtunkhwa beat Balochistan by 8 wickets
A Shaheen Afridi-inspired Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bounced back from an opening day loss to get their National T20 Cup campaign up and running with an eight-wicket drubbing of Balochistan. The Pakistan fast bowler took five wickets, sending the openers packing early and ripping through the lower-middle order to end up with figures of 4-0-20-5 to restrict Haris Sohail’s side to 152, the lowest first-innings score of the tournament so far.Imran Butt’s 37 was the highest score for Balochistan, but it came in 32 balls, and in a high-scoring tournament, Balochistan never quite looked like they would be able to muster the sort of first-innings total to put pressure on KPK. When Wahab Riaz, whose run-a-ball economy rate was a vast improvement on the 51 he conceded in three overs on Wednesday, cleaned up Butt, there was little substance lower down. There was little drama in the chase. Fakhar Zaman’s cameo ensured KPK jumped ahead of the asking rate nice and early, with Mohammad Hafeez picking up the mantle at No. 3, smashing a blistering 25-ball 45. Mohammad Rizwan offered valuable company, top-scoring with an unbeaten 57, and as the bowlers failed to make any sort of inroads, Iftikhar Ahmed wrapped it up with a breezy 29 off 16. KPK would get to the target with three overs still to spare, drawing level with Balochistan on points; both sides now have a win apiece.Sindh beat Central Punjab by 7 wicketsIn the late game, Sindh got their first win of the campaign in similarly resounding fashion, inflicting a first defeat on Central Punjab. After Central Punjab had managed a stuttering 154, chiefly thanks to Abid Ali’s half-century, Sindh’s 134-run opening partnership ensured they barely needed anyone else to brush the total aside, with Sharjeel Khan’s explosive 56-ball 77 enough to sink Central Punjab by seven wickets.Sindh’s bowling was a team effort, with Sohail Khan accounting for three of the top five, while Mohammad Asghar was economically soundest, taking 2 for 23 in his four. Only one bowler – Mohammad Hasnain – conceded runs at more than eight per over, while Central Punjab’s hero last game, Abdullah Shafique, struggled for fluency today, taking 25 balls to score 17.But while Central Punjab had made short work of chasing a total in excess of 200 the first time out, it turned out defending 154 was a different kettle of fish altogether. Even with a bowling attack spearheaded by Naseem Shah, they were unable to stem the flow of runs or make any inroads into the Sindh batting line-up, with Sharjeel and Khurram Manzoor methodically keeping the scoreboard ticking while putting away loose deliveries to ensure they maintained firm control of the contest. With Sharjeel in a destructive mood, Manzoor could afford to be more circumspect, getting to his own half-century in 45 balls. Both openers did fall in quick succession and as the asking rate crept up, there may have been brief concerns that Sindh might mess the chase up, but a pair of sixes from Azam Khan in the penultimate over sealed the deal. It ensured all four teams that played on the day ended with one win and one after two games each.

Arsenal open talks with forward as they seriously consider £43 million deal

Arsenal have opened talks with a highly-rated forward pre-summer, as they seriously consider signing him for around £43 million.

Edu and Arteta planning to bring in new attackers at Arsenal

The north Londoners have been English football's most devastating attacking side this season, scoring more goals than any other Premier League side so far.

Arsenal looking into signing "phenomenal" £34 million Partey replacement

The Gunners could wave goodbye to him this summer.

Early season criticism surrounded Kai Havertz after he joined from Chelsea for £65 million, but the Germany international has since gone on to thrive in a makeshift forward role under Mikel Arteta – scoring 12 goals and bagging six assists in the top flight alone.

However, Havertz's form and Bukayo Saka's goalscoring exploits haven't deterred Arsenal from bringing in new attacking options this summer. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are set to try and sign an important new striker, and reporter Charles Watts has previously stated they could go for a winger as well.

Arsenal are thought to be real admirers of Crystal Palace star Michael Olise for out wide, and Watts believes the Frenchman would be a "perfect" fit for Arteta's side, as the Gunners look to add a new attacker with that "X-Factor".

“I think either Eberechi Eze or Michael Olise would be a perfect fit for Arsenal this summer. I know the club is looking for a new attacking player who could add a bit of X-Factor to the team, someone who can come in and make something out of nothing,” Watts said to CaughtOffside

“We’ve seen Arsenal struggle at times against the low block this season. I think back to the second leg against Bayern in the Champions League and they were protecting their lead by dropping deep in those final 25 minutes. Arsenal just didn’t have anyone on the pitch that night who looked like pulling something unexpected out of the bag and opening them up."

While Olise has showcased fine form this season, he is by no means the only winger they're considering. Indeed, a report this week indicates that have a very serious interest in signing Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams.

The 21-year-old, who's on double digits for La Liga assists after an excellent season, is attracting interest from across Europe.

Arsenal open talks with Williams as they consider £43 million deal

According to GiveMeSport, Arsenal have held talks with Williams as they seriously consider signing him £43 million this summer.

£43 million would certainly be enough to prise the Spain international away, as that is the full value of his release clause, but they're first gauging Williams' interest in making a move to north London before going any further.

"Great player," said his brother, Inaki Williams, on Nico's ability. "He is in incredible shape and I think he can give a lot to Spain. He has shown it by giving Morata a good pass and I am very happy for him.”

Dom Bess relishes 'learning on the job' after small but vital role in England's victory

Spinner’s impact enhanced by burgeoning partnership with the left-armer Sam Curran

Andrew Miller21-Jul-2020Every day in the Test team is a chance to “learn on the job”, according to Dom Bess, England’s rookie offspinner, who said he would take a lot of confidence from his small but significant role in defeating West Indies at Emirates Old Trafford and squaring the series with one Test to play.Bess, who turns 23 on the eve of Friday’s third Test, picked up two wickets on the final day of the second Test, including the matchwinning dismissal of Kemar Roach and the vital scalp of West Indies’ captain, Jason Holder, as England overcame some stiff mid-afternoon resistance to surge to a 113-run victory midway through the final session. And while there’s no guarantee that Bess will retain his place in England’s attack for the series decider – the surfeit of right-handers in West Indies’ line-up means that Jack Leach, whose left-arm angle takes the ball away from the bat more regularly, could come into consideration – the fact that he’s played a part in another England victory, his fourth in six appearances since his debut against Pakistan in 2018, will give him plenty satisfaction for now.”The boys were obviously very happy with that,” Bess told Sky Sports at the end of the Test. “More relief I reckon than anything. As it was getting on, it just felt like the ball was getting a little bit softer. You could see the lads [feeling the effects of] having overs under their belt, and it was the first game back for three of them. So, we’re just very happy to level the series and now go into next Test with it all to play.”Bess’s figures of 2 for 59 in 15.1 overs were not the sort of dominant fifth-day performance that spinners are generally picked to produce, but as the bowler himself acknowledged, his opportunities for much of the day were restricted by his place in the pecking order – in particular, the need for him to perform a holding role at the Brian Statham End of the ground, while the seamers utilised the favourable breeze and variable bounce being generated from the James Anderson End.It wasn’t until the 61st over of the innings, when Ben Stokes took over at the Statham End with another energetic spell of short-pitched bowling, that Bess was given a chance to attack from his preferred end, and he produced one of the key moments of the day when he spun a big offbreak through Holder’s defences to bowl the West Indies captain for 35.ALSO READ: Dobell: Stokes is England’s man for all sessions”We talked about roles, we talked about bowling as a collective,” Bess said. “My role at that time was probably bowling the other end and trying to create as many chances as I could at that end. There were some that spun from there and I felt like I was in the game, but I was leaking a little bit. I was quite happy when I got to come up to the top end, and bowl with the wind, and a bit of rough.”Much of that rough outside the right-hander’s off-stump was created by the left-arm angle of Sam Curran, another of the young players whom England have trusted to hone their games on the highest stage. And as Curran helped to make it eight wins out of eight on the occasions that he’s featured in an England home Test since his own debut in 2018, Bess hoped that the pair could have a long and fruitful partnership as a bowling combination.”Perfect!” was Bess’s assessment of the rough that Curran creates in his follow-through. “Hopefully he can get a little bit heavier and keep running in, but it was in a good area and I knew where my length had to be on it. I knew I had to pull it back and make sure I got as many balls in there as possible, and be as consistent as possible.”I think I really built that pressure,” he added. “I feel like I’m learning every day, and I know that’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s genuine with me because when I’m on the job I’m going through so many emotions.”And that’s little wonder, given the fluctuations of fortune that Bess has endured in his short career – which encompassed a loan spell to Yorkshire last season when his first-team opportunities at Somerset dried up with Leach ensconced as the first-choice spinner, and a late call-up to England’s Test team in South Africa in December, where he starred with five first-innings wickets in their victory in Port Elizabeth.More recently, Bess has been linked with a permanent move to Warwickshire, where he is being earmarked as a successor to their long-term spinner, Jeetan Patel, while his game-craft was honed on the England Lions camp in Sri Lanka last winter, where he worked on his seam position with Rangana Herath. But for the time being, he’s obliged to do most of his learning on the big stage.”I’m talking with Daws [Richard Dawson, England spin coach] a lot about how consistent can I be in that area,” he added. “But I think going back up to that end, and producing some of those balls that I did, it’s given me a lot of confidence.”

Sheffield Wednesday can forget Gregory by signing “lethal” striker

Sheffield Wednesday will now be preparing for another rollercoaster season in the Championship after Danny Rohl's Owls pulled off a miraculous relegation escape to stay put in the second tier.

A six-match unbeaten run to close out the campaign ensured Wednesday didn't fall through the trapdoor, with three wins on the bounce right at the end putting a smile on the face of everyone associated with the South Yorkshire titans.

Still, there will now be a feeling at Hillsborough that Wednesday will want to kick on and not be resigned to another relegation battle next season, with the potential for a number of positive incomings to walk through the door in the summer.

The rejuvenated Owls could even look to reignite a failed deal from the January transfer window, especially with the recent development that Lee Gregory is now a free agent.

Wednesday looking at failed transfer target again

Casting your mind back to January, it's easy to forget about a major transfer saga that transpired at the bottom end of the Championship table.

Blackburn Rovers and Wednesday tussled over the signature of Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire right until deadline day, with the American centre-forward looking to have sealed a deal to join the Riversiders at the very last moment at the expense of Rohl's men.

But, due to a last-second paperwork issue, a deal never went through and now Wednesday could look to pounce again to further add insult to injury.

The Sheffield Star are reporting that Rohl's men are still keen admirers and could look to clinch a move this time around for their failed transfer target, softening the blow of club legend Gregory leaving in the process.

How McGuire would fit in at Wednesday

Anthony Musaba would, no doubt, love to line up alongside the deadly American centre-forward if a move can finally be done, with the 23-year-old winger enjoying himself with electric displays at the close of the campaign even when games became more pressurised.

Musaba's assists total for Wednesday – which stood at a respectable five from 48 contests this season – would very much rise you imagine if McGuire relocates to South Yorkshire.

McGuire has continued to live up to his "lethal" billing handed out to him by Orlando boss Oscar Pareja in 2023, even with the disappointment of a failed EFL move hovering over him, with six goals from 13 games this year.

With the 23-year-old attacker not far off Gregory's Owls total playing out in America, from half the games, the failed Blackburn signing could come into his own even more by lining up alongside the likes of Musaba in his new location.

In the latter stages of the campaign, Musaba and other attackers at Rohl's disposal were unstoppable at points alongside Troyes loanee Ike Ugbo with the Dutchman assisting Ugbo's opener away at Millwall in mid-February before firing home his own effort.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Anthony Musaba.

The ex-AS Monaco man took over goalscoring duties more frequently when push came to shove in crunch clashes from here on in, scoring against West Bromwich Albion in the penultimate game of the season to heroically play his part in the emphatic 3-0 victory.

If the Owls cannot get Ugbo back permanently, and need another new face up top with Gregory exiting, attempting an ambitious capture of McGuire again could be the way to go.

Southee and Boult run through India to seal massive victory

The big boys of New Zealand fast bowling, Trent Boult and Tim Southee, did the business with the old ball to seal their 100th Test win, on the fourth morning at Basin Reserve. Twenty-eight of those wins have come in matches that Boult and Southee have played together. Their pin-point planning and execution made sure India’s resistance on the third evening didn’t count for much. Boult started the slide, and Southee burst through the opening to bowl India out for 191, setting New Zealand’s batsmen a target of just nine runs. It ended India’s seven-match winning streak, and New Zealand’s run of three losses.India began the day 39 behind with six wickets in hand and 15 overs to go the new ball, hoping to set New Zealand some sort of target, but Boult and Southee were excellent with the old ball. On a clear and still morning, which aids swing in Wellington, they switched from their bouncers plan to look for more traditional modes of dismissals. Boult looked to set Ajinkya Rahane up for the lbw, but the pitch didn’t have enough pace for that to succeed. So he went around the wicket to get one to seam away a touch. Rahane had to play the angle, but the movement away took his edge. Then Southee got to his work of setting up batsmen. First up Hanuma Vihari who had toughed it out for 76 balls before this over started. Southee began with a full outswinger that didn’t tempt Vihari. Then he got closer and fuller, drawing a loose shot from Vihari, but not getting the edge. With the third ball, he scrambled the seam to play with the scrambled mind of the batsman. The ball pitched outside off and jagged back in. Vihari still had the outswinger in mind, and was bowled.Southee did the same with R Ashwin, whom he had bowled with an outswinger, first ball, in the first innings. This time the outswinger pitched and nipped back in to trap Ashwin in front. All seven wickets till this point had fallen to these two bowlers, so both were on for five-fors.Boult could have sealed his when he drew a bat-pad from Ishant Sharma with what was the last ball of his spell, but Tom Latham shelled it at short leg. Boult was off to take a break before the new ball became available. Colin de Grandhomme soon drew the uppish drive from Sharma, but now Southee dropped him at short cover. The second drop, as it turned out, ended up helping him getting the five-for. Before the new ball, though, de Grandhomme managed to get through the defences of Sharma. With India only slightly in lead, Rishabh Pant had no choice but to go after the new ball. As he flicked one off the pads off Southee, Boult pulled off a smart catch at fine leg to make it a matter of time. And that matter of time was only three balls for Jasprit Bumrah, who guided Southee to second slip for a low catch to substitute fielder Daryl Mitchell. The man he was substituting for, Tom Blundell, came out to bat and help knock off the target, which was a positive sign after he spent the whole second innings off the field with a shoulder injury he suffered when fielding in India’s first.

"Excellent" West Ham player on £140,000-a-week set to leave this summer

West Ham United are already preparing to part ways with one of their highest earners this summer, it has emerged, despite there being several games left in the campaign.

West Ham 1-1 Spurs

A 1-1 draw between West Ham and Tottenham felt like two valuable points dropped in their race for Premier League position come the end of the season.

With goals from Brennan Johnson and Kurt Zouma providing the stalemate, both sides will feel that they could have won it in a topsy-turvy second half which ended with a bizarre string of counter attacks in both directions, and a draw suits nobody.

For David Moyes' side, the result leaves them seventh in the top flight, but three points behind Manchester United having played two games more. Meanwhile, the gap between the Hammers and 12th placed Chelsea is just 5 points, with the Blues having two games in hand on their London rivals.

It means that many West Ham fans will see the results as a missed opportunity, with the chance to put some daylight between themselves and their fellow European hopefuls squandered.

No matter how the campaign finishes, however, summer business is already being discussed, and a major decision has been made.

Hammers high earner definitely leaving this summer

An unused substitute in the 1-1 draw on Tuesday night, a decision has reportedly already been made on Kalvin Phillips' long-term West Ham future. The midfielder joined on loan from Manchester City in January, but has endured a horrible spell so far, during which time he has seen red and conceded a penalty.

David Moyes backed the one time England player of the year to succeed after he was spotted swearing at a fan after the 4-3 defeat to Newcastle.

Dharmesh Sheth drops manager news for West Ham fans, Steidten influence key

It could have major ramifications come this summer.

ByBen Browning Apr 2, 2024

"Kalvin Phillips is a really good player, an international player, an excellent footballer and I do believe we can still make something out of the time we’ve got left with him here," Moyes explained before the draw with Spurs.

Beyond this summer, however, the future looks bleak. As per Football Insider, West Ham have already decided that they 'will not' make the loan spell permanent. The club shelled out a reported £3m to take him on loan in January, and agreed to cover his £140,000 per week wages for the duration of the loan spell. However, with Manchester City reportedly wanting around £30m to part ways with Phillips this summer, the east Londoners are set to look elsewhere.

West Ham midfielder Kalvin Phillips

To make matters worse for Phillips, the report adds that he will not be selected for England's EURO 2024 squad as a result of his struggles, while Manchester City are keen to cash in on him this summer and cut their losses after the Englishman has managed just six appearances in 18 months under Pep Guardiola.

Devine, McGrath propel Adelaide Strikers to WBBL final

Sophie Devine marched the Adelaide Strikers all over Perth Scorchers and into Sunday’s WBBL final, and in doing so closed to within 14 runs of surpassing Ellyse Perry’s 777-run tournament aggregate record, on a sweltering day at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field. The Strikers had taken the initiative from the first few overs after sending the Scorchers in, Devine claiming the pivotal first wicket of Meg Lanning while Megan Schutt played her customary stymieing role at the other end, ultimately conceding just 14 runs from her four overs.Despite a recovery led by Georgia Redmayne, the Scorchers were held to 7 for 126, a total that was defendable only if Devine could be seen off quickly. Instead, she took control of the innings as she has so often this competition, gliding to a ninth half-century this season at the WBBL. She was aided by Tahlia McGrath and Bridget Patterson to rush the Strikers to their first-ever tournament final. The Scorchers, whose coach Lisa Keightley is set to take over as England coach, did not help themselves by dropping two catches and missing a stumping.Devine, Schutt get the early breakAn early start at Allan Border Field offered the chance for the bowling side to get the most of any movement in the air or off the pitch. Thanks to Devine and Schutt, the Adelaide Strikers were able to do both.Critically, this reaped them the wicket of Meg Lanning in only the day’s second over. After being corralled by Schutt’s inswing in the opening over, Lanning leant forward to drive at Bates, only to slice an away-swinger into a well-staffed backward-point region, where Alex Price held the catch. The Strikers’ glee at dismissing the Australian captain was unconfined, but more was to follow as Schutt found a way past Chloe Piparo and Nicole Bolton in consecutive deliveries. A tally of 3 for 26 from the Powerplay meant the Scorchers were starting their innings from an awful long way back, requiring high skill, patience and stamina to rescue things as temperatures ticked towards the high 30s.Redmayne, Barsby fight backInitially, the Scorchers had to be principally concerned with the preservation of wickets, and as 10 overs ticked past with only 45 on the scoreboard, Redmayne and Barbsy knew they needed to add acceleration to occupation. The telling moment arrived when Redmayne hoisted the first ball of Sarah Cotye’s third over high beyond the midwicket boundary for her first-ever WBBL six, starting an over that was to cost the Strikers 17 runs and allow the Scorchers to wriggle clear. In mounting heat, the Strikers’ earlier pristine fielding and bowling began to fray, as wides and byes accrued. Devine returned to end the stand at 88, and Schutt completed an outstanding analysis of 2 for 14 from four, but the Scorchers were able to pile up 81 runs from the final 10 overs of their innings, meaning that the Perth side had given themselves something to bowl at – the average winning score by teams batting first at AB Field being 129.Devine takes charge…Desperate for an early wicket to mirror the loss of Lanning, the Scorchers were able to manufacture one when Suzie Bates, who had looked out of sorts, sliced a ball to gully and set off, only to be foiled by a brilliant diving save and throw into the wicketkeeper by Bolton. But where Lanning’s exit had been followed by two more, Devine was soon able to find her stride in the company of Tahlia McGrath, negotiating the new ball with a combination of vigilance and the occasional rasping shot through the off-side field. Given how dominant she has been all tournament, Devine’s calmness and control were perhaps not surprising, but she benefited from McGrath’s willingness to drive the game forward herself. That approach came with some risk, and she was to be dropped twice – by Redmayne when McGrath had only four, and again when Bolton turfed a straightforward chance at long-on with the Strikers No. 3 on 19. These chances allowed the Strikers to get to the midway point of their innings needing 68 from the last 10 overs, making a favourable comparison with the back-end of the Scorchers’ innings.…and sees the Strikers homeWhen McGrath was out, ending the second-wicket partnership at 79, the Strikers still needed 45 from 38, no sure thing. Bridget Patterson, another strong performer for Adelaide this season, had a few early jitters, notably a stumping chance spurned by Redmayne. But Devine did not for a moment lose her poise, even laughing with the broadcasters about how her swimming ranks rather poorly next to her cricketing skills. The end duly arrived quickly, as 12, 11 and 16 were piled up from the 16th, 17th and 18th overs. That left Devine with just one more run to get, and her drive down the ground was about as commanding a finish as anyone could want.

Debate about quality of South American vs European teamsScaloni calls for Copa America teams to enter EurosArgentina boss suggests his side could win competitionWHAT HAPPENED?

The Albiceleste manager is aiming to guide his team to a second consecutive Copa America success this year, with his side set to take on Canada in the semi-finals this week, having already led them to a World Cup triumph in 2022.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

There has been much debate about the difference in quality between European and South American national teams. France star Kylian Mbappe sparked outrage among some South American stars after he said football in the continent "isn't as advanced as Europe", saying European teams win more World Cups for that reason.

WHAT SCALONI SAID

That debate has come up once again in recent weeks as Euro 2024 and this year's Copa America overlap, and Scaloni would like to see South American nations be invited to the other continent's competition and vice versa.

He said: "I don’t think it’s more difficult from one competition to another. There are some important teams that have advanced to the semi-finals of the Euros, teams that we faced in the World Cup and it went well for us, but that doesn’t mean that we could go to the European Championship and win it. Or maybe yes [we could win the Euros]. I think the level is very even. I would like a European team to one day be invited to a Copa America to see what it is like to play in a Copa America and the opposite, as well. But that would be a World Cup, right? So in the end the difficulty is the same. I don’t think there’s much difference, really, but these are just opinions."

Argentina will aim to reach another Copa America final when they take on Canada in the Copa America semi-final. The winners will go on to face either Colombia or Uruguay in the final. Meanwhile, in Europe, France and Spain will go head-to-head for a place in the final of Euro 2024, where they will take on either England or Netherlands. The winners of each competition will meet in the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions in 2025.
