Early season criticism surrounded Kai Havertz after he joined from Chelsea for £65 million, but the Germany international has since gone on to thrive in a makeshift forward role under Mikel Arteta – scoring 12 goals and bagging six assists in the top flight alone.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are set to try and sign an important new striker, and reporter Charles Watts has previously stated they could go for a winger as well.

Arsenal are thought to be real admirers of Crystal Palace star Michael Olise for out wide, and Watts believes the Frenchman would be a "perfect" fit for Arteta's side, as the Gunners look to add a new attacker with that "X-Factor".

“I think either Eberechi Eze or Michael Olise would be a perfect fit for Arsenal this summer. I know the club is looking for a new attacking player who could add a bit of X-Factor to the team, someone who can come in and make something out of nothing,” Watts said to CaughtOffside

“We’ve seen Arsenal struggle at times against the low block this season. While Olise has showcased fine form this season, he is by no means the only winger they're considering. Indeed, a report this week indicates that have a very serious interest in signing Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams.

The 21-year-old, who's on double digits for La Liga assists after an excellent season, is attracting interest from across Europe.

Sheffield Wednesday will now be preparing for another rollercoaster season in the Championship after Danny Rohl's Owls pulled off a miraculous relegation escape to stay put in the second tier.

A six-match unbeaten run to close out the campaign ensured Wednesday didn't fall through the trapdoor, with three wins on the bounce right at the end putting a smile on the face of everyone associated with the South Yorkshire titans.

Still, there will now be a feeling at Hillsborough that Wednesday will want to kick on and not be resigned to another relegation battle next season, with the potential for a number of positive incomings to walk through the door in the summer.

The rejuvenated Owls could even look to reignite a failed deal from the January transfer window, especially with the recent development that Lee Gregory is now a free agent.

Wednesday looking at failed transfer target again

Casting your mind back to January, it's easy to forget about a major transfer saga that transpired at the bottom end of the Championship table.

Blackburn Rovers and Wednesday tussled over the signature of Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire right until deadline day, with the American centre-forward looking to have sealed a deal to join the Riversiders at the very last moment at the expense of Rohl's men.

But, due to a last-second paperwork issue, a deal never went through and now Wednesday could look to pounce again to further add insult to injury.

The Sheffield Star are reporting that Rohl's men are still keen admirers and could look to clinch a move this time around for their failed transfer target, softening the blow of club legend Gregory leaving in the process.

How McGuire would fit in at Wednesday

Anthony Musaba would, no doubt, love to line up alongside the deadly American centre-forward if a move can finally be done, with the 23-year-old winger enjoying himself with electric displays at the close of the campaign even when games became more pressurised.

Musaba's assists total for Wednesday – which stood at a respectable five from 48 contests this season – would very much rise you imagine if McGuire relocates to South Yorkshire.

McGuire has continued to live up to his "lethal" billing handed out to him by Orlando boss Oscar Pareja in 2023, even with the disappointment of a failed EFL move hovering over him, with six goals from 13 games this year.

With the 23-year-old attacker not far off Gregory's Owls total playing out in America, from half the games, the failed Blackburn signing could come into his own even more by lining up alongside the likes of Musaba in his new location.

The big boys of New Zealand fast bowling, Trent Boult and Tim Southee, did the business with the old ball to seal their 100th Test win, on the fourth morning at Basin Reserve. Twenty-eight of those wins have come in matches that Boult and Southee have played together. Their pin-point planning and execution made sure India’s resistance on the third evening didn’t count for much. Boult started the slide, and Southee burst through the opening to bowl India out for 191, setting New Zealand’s batsmen a target of just nine runs. It ended India’s seven-match winning streak, and New Zealand’s run of three losses.India began the day 39 behind with six wickets in hand and 15 overs to go the new ball, hoping to set New Zealand some sort of target, but Boult and Southee were excellent with the old ball. On a clear and still morning, which aids swing in Wellington, they switched from their bouncers plan to look for more traditional modes of dismissals. Boult looked to set Ajinkya Rahane up for the lbw, but the pitch didn’t have enough pace for that to succeed. So he went around the wicket to get one to seam away a touch. Rahane had to play the angle, but the movement away took his edge.Then Southee got to his work of setting up batsmen. First up Hanuma Vihari who had toughed it out for 76 balls before this over started. Southee began with a full outswinger that didn’t tempt Vihari. Then he got closer and fuller, drawing a loose shot from Vihari, but not getting the edge. With the third ball, he scrambled the seam to play with the scrambled mind of the batsman. The ball pitched outside off and jagged back in. Vihari still had the outswinger in mind, and was bowled.Southee did the same with R Ashwin, whom he had bowled with an outswinger, first ball, in the first innings. This time the outswinger pitched and nipped back in to trap Ashwin in front. All seven wickets till this point had fallen to these two bowlers, so both were on for five-fors.Boult could have sealed his when he drew a bat-pad from Ishant Sharma with what was the last ball of his spell, but Tom Latham shelled it at short leg. Boult was off to take a break before the new ball became available. Colin de Grandhomme soon drew the uppish drive from Sharma, but now Southee dropped him at short cover. The second drop, as it turned out, ended up helping him getting the five-for. Before the new ball, though, de Grandhomme managed to get through the defences of Sharma.With India only slightly in lead, Rishabh Pant had no choice but to go after the new ball. As he flicked one off the pads off Southee, Boult pulled off a smart catch at fine leg to make it a matter of time. And that matter of time was only three balls for Jasprit Bumrah, who guided Southee to second slip for a low catch to substitute fielder Daryl Mitchell.The man he was substituting for, Tom Blundell, came out to bat and help knock off the target, which was a positive sign after he spent the whole second innings off the field with a shoulder injury he suffered when fielding in India’s first.

Sophie Devine marched the Adelaide Strikers all over Perth Scorchers and into Sunday’s WBBL final, and in doing so closed to within 14 runs of surpassing Ellyse Perry’s 777-run tournament aggregate record, on a sweltering day at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field.The Strikers had taken the initiative from the first few overs after sending the Scorchers in, Devine claiming the pivotal first wicket of Meg Lanning while Megan Schutt played her customary stymieing role at the other end, ultimately conceding just 14 runs from her four overs.Despite a recovery led by Georgia Redmayne, the Scorchers were held to 7 for 126, a total that was defendable only if Devine could be seen off quickly. Instead, she took control of the innings as she has so often this competition, gliding to a ninth half-century this season at the WBBL. She was aided by Tahlia McGrath and Bridget Patterson to rush the Strikers to their first-ever tournament final. The Scorchers, whose coach Lisa Keightley is set to take over as England coach, did not help themselves by dropping two catches and missing a stumping.Devine, Schutt get the early breakAn early start at Allan Border Field offered the chance for the bowling side to get the most of any movement in the air or off the pitch. Bridget Patterson, another strong performer for Adelaide this season, had a few early jitters, notably a stumping chance spurned by Redmayne. But Devine did not for a moment lose her poise, even laughing with the broadcasters about how her swimming ranks rather poorly next to her cricketing skills.The end duly arrived quickly, as 12, 11 and 16 were piled up from the 16th, 17th and 18th overs. The Albiceleste manager is aiming to guide his team to a second consecutive Copa America success this year, with his side set to take on Canada in the semi-finals this week, having already led them to a World Cup triumph in 2022.

There has been much debate about the difference in quality between European and South American national teams. France star Kylian Mbappe sparked outrage among some South American stars after he said football in the continent "isn't as advanced as Europe", saying European teams win more World Cups for that reason.

WHAT SCALONI SAID

That debate has come up once again in recent weeks as Euro 2024 and this year's Copa America overlap, and Scaloni would like to see South American nations be invited to the other continent's competition and vice versa.

He said: "I don’t think it’s more difficult from one competition to another. There are some important teams that have advanced to the semi-finals of the Euros, teams that we faced in the World Cup and it went well for us, but that doesn’t mean that we could go to the European Championship and win it. Or maybe yes [we could win the Euros]. I think the level is very even. I would like a European team to one day be invited to a Copa America to see what it is like to play in a Copa America and the opposite, as well. But that would be a World Cup, right? So in the end the difficulty is the same. I don’t think there’s much difference, really, but these are just opinions."

Meanwhile, in Europe, France and Spain will go head-to-head for a place in the final of Euro 2024, where they will take on either England or Netherlands. The winners of each competition will meet in the CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions in 2025.
