Bull wants to see Moutinho keep playing

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Bull, who scored 360 goals for Wolves, believes Joao Moutinho could keep playing despite turning 35-years-old later this year, and he should use Zlatan Ibrahimovic as an inspiration.

Moutinho has been a mainstay in Wolves’ midfield since he joined them in 2018 from AS Monaco and despite being 34, Nuno Espirito Santo has handed him 23 starts in the Premier League this season.

If the midfielder needed an inspiration to carry on he only has to look at AC Milan striker Ibrahimovic who, at 39-years old is the fourth top scorer in the Serie A and has just come out of international retirement to play for Sweden at this summer’s European championship.

Speaking on whether the club should bring through youngsters to learn from Moutinho and then replace him, Bull told FFC:

“I think it’s all about youth at the moment and bringing people through. I’ve heard big shouts coming out of the academy saying there are loads coming through.

“If Moutinho is going to be 35 this year and Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants to be in the World Cup at 41-years-old, then anything is possible.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/exclusive-andreas-sondergaard-wolves-premier-league” title=”Exclusive! Andreas Sondergaard talks all things Wolves”]

“As long as he keeps himself fit, because Moutinho’s not the most mobile but he’s the one that gives the ball away the fewest amount of times. He just needs the people around him to go forward.”

Moutinho was a statement signing for Wolves when they first won promotion back to the Premier League as he arrived with Champions League experience and a winner’s mentality having won 16 trophies in both Portugal and France.

Wolves have been linked with Josh Brownhill recently who has impressed through his work rate and enthusiasm at Burnley this season.

Mourinho should unleash Lamela vs Arsenal

Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side travel to North London rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, where a win will boost Spurs’ chances of securing a top four spot this season, whilst it would all but end the Gunners’ hopes of achieving the same goal.

After some impressive performances of late, including in the 2-0 win against Dinamo Zagreb in midweek, the Portuguese manager should consider unleashing Erik Lamela against the Gunners.

The Argentinian has produced some superb cameo appearances from the bench in recent domestic fixtures and has been excellent in both of his last two starts in the Europa League, earning an 8.28 WhoScored rating for his performance against Wolfsberger and a 7.19 rating in the win against Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday.

The former Roma man, who reportedly earns £80,000 per week at Tottenham, played a huge part in Spurs’ opening goal against the Croatian side as he produced an excellent piece of skill on the edge of the box before seeing his outside-of-the-foot shot come back off the post, leaving Harry Kane with a tap-in.

Mourinho is a big fan of Lamela, having praised his willingness to play against Chelsea last season despite carrying a knock, saying: “That’s Lamela. Amazing guy, fantastic player and trying to help the team.”

These are the sorts of attributes which can be vital, particularly in derby games, and Lamela has shown that he loves to get stuck in and win the ball back under Mourinho. He has averaged 1.8 tackles per game in the Europa League for Spurs so far this season, so he could be a game-changer in the Emirates Stadium if he can win the ball back high up the pitch and kickstart a counterattack.

Considering he has just five starts in the Premier League this season, most recently against West Ham last month, it would be something of a risk to start the 29-year-old for such an important game. However, considering Arsenal’s tendency to give the ball away in dangerous positions, having a workhorse such as Lamela in an attacking midfield role could turn the game in Spurs’ favour.

Mourinho also described Lamela as “chaotic” recently and that is perhaps the exact sort of player who could make the difference for Spurs in what is likely going to be a tough match for the Lilywhites at the home of their arch-rivals.

Therefore, the Portuguese manager should take a risk and hand the 29-year-old just his sixth start of the Premier League season in the hope that he can be the game-changer in the derby.

Arsenal want Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr

According to reports, Arsenal are interested in signing Real Madrid starlet Vinicius Junior.

What’s the story?

The Brazil international has found himself in and out of Zinedine Zidane’s side in La Liga this season, completing the full 90 minutes just four times.

Now, Spanish publication OkDiario claim that both Arsenal and Premier League rivals Liverpool are among those clubs who are chasing Vinicius’ signature, and that Madrid are ready to cut their losses on the £36m-rated winger in order to make a move for PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

Bad news for Willian

After arriving in the summer on a free transfer, it’s fair to say Willian hasn’t exactly shown Arsenal why they brought him in from Chelsea.

He’s managed just three assists in 19 games in all competitions, and has yet to find the back of the net for his new club either. It’s been no surprise that in recent weeks, he has found himself out of Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Nicolas Pepe all seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order.

And were Vinicius to arrive at the Emirates, then it would further limit Willian’s chances of getting himself back into the team, just a year after he first joined the Gunners.

In Vinicius, Arsenal would be getting a supremely talented and young Brazilian winger, who has already earned huge plaudits for his ability and potential.

Former Argentina manager, Jorge Valdano, raved: “Vinicius is a (Ousmane) Dembele who doesn’t stop. He’s like an impetuous, untamed thoroughbred. He’s always in a hurry. We are talking about an 18-year-old boy who is already starting for Real Madrid. This is the ultimate proof that great players become addicted.”

The 20-year-old’s arrival at the Emirates would see Edu work his Brazilian magic once again, just like he did with Martinelli back in the summer of 2019.

Meanwhile, Arsenal must land this “phenomenon” in the January transfer window…

West Brom must avoid Premier League flop Demarai Gray

West Brom are reportedly interested in bringing Demarai Gray to the Hawthorns, according to reports this week…

What’s the word?

The Daily Mirror (05/01, page 47) claim the 24-year-old winger, who has featured just once in the Premier League this term, is a target for Sam Allardyce amongst others.

Top-flight rivals Leeds United are thought to be leading the race with Southampton and Sheffield United also mentioned in the report.

It is thought that the Foxes ace feels he has no long-term future at the club as he enters the final six months of his current contract, which also means he’s free to join any foreign outfit with Ligue 1 side Marseille also linked.

Worse than Phillips

Albion are on the verge of securing Robert Snodgrass on a free transfer from West Ham, so a move for Gray doesn’t seem worthwhile.

He has failed to live up to expectations at the King Power Stadium, indeed it is a surprise to see that the wide man has made 133 appearances in the Premier League since Leicester activated his £3.7m release clause in January 2016.

In those matches, Gray has only been able to muster up ten goals and 11 assists, and evidently, current Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers is no longer a fan considering he’s played 459 minutes all season.

A stark contrast to September 2019 when Rodgers lauded the winger a “big talent”  and June 2020, emphasising this point, calling him a “wonderful talent” who “can do everything” even claiming he had been “exceptional” – though his lack of action on the pitch clearly tells another story.

Last season in the top-flight, Gray failed to average over 1.1 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

Which is far worse than what Matty Phillips conjured up despite being in and out of the side on the Baggies’ way to promotion.

Even though the former QPR man has been found out at this level, managing just 0.5 shots and 0.4 dribbles per game, the last thing Big Sam will want is another disastrous winger on his hands.

The Baggies must steer clear of the £55k-per-week flop this transfer window.

Takeover claim made involving Nick De Marco%%sep%% %%sitename%%

Liam Kennedy has dropped a claim on the proposed £300m takeover of Newcastle United by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group.

The football journalist tweeted out his latest piece for The Shields Gazette with the caption ‘Now this is interesting’, as he wrote about how Nick De Marco QC tweeted about having a meeting with the St. James’ Park faithful and joining the team at the Emirates Stadium to watch their FA Cup tie versus Arsenal, in which they eventually lost 2-0 after extra-time.

Kennedy added, in his article, that movement is expected in the Tyneside club’s arbitration case against the Premier League, a cast in which De Marco has been instrumental in trying to get sorted over the next few weeks or so.

Can De Marco be instrumental in the Newcastle takeover?

De Marco has a good track record and overall reputation among sports lawyers, exemplified by him helping Sheffield Wednesday win their legal case, as he was reportedly instrumental in getting their points deduction in the EFL Championship reduced from 12 points to just six, and therefore giving the Owls a much better chance of surviving in the EFL Championship.

He has even been branded as ‘the Lionel Messi of sport law’, which should give fans of the Magpies hope if he is to represent the Toon in the arbitration hearing against the top flight.

West Ham face the price of success after rebutting Chelsea’s Declan Rice pursuit

David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady now face paying the price of success by awarding Declan Rice a substantial pay-rise after West Ham United rebutted Chelsea’s efforts to sign the England international this summer.

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, the Hammers are potentially set to double Rice’s salary with a new, long-term contract as a sign of his stature as the best player at the London Stadium after demanding at least £80million for the holding midfielder in the summer transfer market.

Chelsea had hoped to acquire Rice as a key part of Frank Lampard’s new side, but never got as far as presenting a formal offer having baulked at West Ham’s mammoth asking price.

Rice is currently mid-way through a five-year contract that saw the 21-year-old jump from earning £3,000-per-week to £60,000-p/w, which Gold and Sullivan had been reluctant to offer at the time.

Now, they face presenting Rice with a deal worth £120k-p/w and making him the club’s top-earner, eclipsing the £100,000-per-week terms of Andriy Yarmolenko for the honour after offloading Felipe Anderson to FC Porto on loan in a deal which sees the Liga NOS giants pay 50% of his contract.

West Ham would also be looking to secure Rice’s long-term commitment in any new contract, but by increasing his wages by 100% it would see GSB forfeit an extra £60,000-p/w for the next 194 weeks (the time left on his current contract which expires 30th June 2024), meaning forking out an additional £11,640,000 over that period than they would currently be in line to pay.

A new contract could also help the Irons protect Rice’s value in any future transfer interest, with a handful of the top Premier League clubs said to be admirers of the former Chelsea trainee.

Price of success

As impressive as it was for West Ham to retain Rice and not weaken their position in negotiations with Chelsea, keeping a player at the club after requesting a gargantuan £80m was always set to leave GSB in a position where they must offer the 21-year-old new terms.

Simply put, West Ham saw fit to offer Anderson an £85,000-per-week contract when he signed from SS Lazio in 2018 and hand Yarmolenko his lucrative deal that Spotrac claim is worth £115k-p/w, but neither have offered anywhere near as much as Rice in the past 12 months.

Anderson managed to start just 20 of his 25 Premier League appearances last season while offering one sole goal and four assists, with his last involvement in any strike coming in the Hammers’ 4-0 win over the would-be relegated AFC Bournemouth on New Year’s Day.

Yarmolenko, meanwhile, offered five goals and one assist over his 23 top-flight appearances last term, of which he started a mere 10 having missed months of action through a tear in the abductor muscle following a season-ending Achilles tendon rupture in his debut campaign.

Rice, on the other hand, started and played the full 90 minutes in each of West Ham’s league fixtures in 2019/20 and has remained one of the first names on the team sheet this term, while captaining the side against Arsenal, Wolves and Leicester – another sign of why he deserves the new terms GSB will have to offer.

AND in other news, a £32.6m-valued player showed West Ham what they missed this week after failing to secure a summer transfer.

Sunderland: Arbenit Xhemajli backs his new club to have a "successful season"

Sunderland’s new signing Arbenit Xhemajli has spoken for the first time since his arrival at the Stadium of Light.

Chronicle Live were among the first to report that Sunderland were showing interest in the Kosovo international and it has now been confirmed via the club’s official website that a deal has been completed.

The 22-year-old has penned a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light after spending time with the club during pre-season, featuring in the 3-1 win over Gateshead.

Xhemajli becomes Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson’s fifth signing of the summer, arriving after a six-figure compensation package was agreed with his former club Neuchatel Xamax.

Following his move to Wearside, Xhemajli said: “It feels great to get the deal done. I’m really happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started. I had some positive talks with the manager and from what I have seen, I believe we will have a successful season.”

The left-footed defender made his senior debut in 2017 and has since gone on to clock up more than 50 career appearances in Switzerland.

Xhemajli will not be eligible to feature in today’s Carabao Cup tie against Hull City but can make his Sunderland debut Bristol Rovers in League One next Saturday.

Xhemajli’s signing is a gamble from Phil Parkinson, especially given that the defender does not have any experience of English football.

He may need some time to settle in to the hustle and bustle of League One but, should he perform to the ability that convinced the Black Cats to sign him, then Parkinson may have captured a real gem.
