Leicester’s Rodgers praise justified

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has been lavishly praised for his work with the East Midlands club – and justifiably so.

The former Liverpool and Celtic manager has dragged the Foxes from the doldrums of mid-table mediocrity to consistent challengers for the UEFA Champions League positions and an FA Cup semi-final in just a couple of seasons.

The Northern Irishman has now received the ultimate compliment, with World Cup-winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari saying that Rodgers in on track to be “one of the greatest managers in the world”.

Judging from his managerial CV so far and his immense experience within the game despite his tender years, it is hard to argue with that assessment.

But for a few tricky appointments in his formative years, Rodgers has established himself as an elite coach at every level.

He created a fantastic team at Swansea City, earning the Welsh outfit promotion to the Premier League for the first time with an attractive style of play which earned him the Liverpool job.

At Anfield, the 48-year-old developed the careers of Philippe Coutinho, Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling among many others, whilst also going so close to guiding the Reds to their first Premier League crown, only to miss out to Manchester City.

After his tenure on Merseyside ended, his long wait for silverware came to an end with Celtic. He masterminded two Scottish Premiership title wins, one of those being a stunning unbeaten campaign, whilst also scooping five cup wins.

Having celebrated his 100th match in charge of Leicester City, Rodgers’ influence at the King Power Stadium cannot be understated.

Whilst he may have to go some way to prove that he is one of the elite coaches in the world, a task which will certainly be helped with the addition of more silverware, Scolari’s assessment that the 48-year-old is firmly on the correct route to achieving that status is not far wrong, and it’s praise which is certainly justified.

Celtic must prioritise Favre

Celtic’s long wait for a new manager continues well into the closing stages of 2020/21.

Eddie Howe has long been rumoured to be taking over but a deal has apparently yet to be struck with the former AFC Bournemouth manager.

Now, suggestions from Football Insider imply that Dermot Desmond has his eyes on ex-Borussia Dortmund tactician Lucien Favre just in case Howe rejects a move north of the border.

The Swiss should really be club’s first choice as opposed to a Plan B.

The 63-year-old already has an extremely impressive CV within the game having enjoyed spells at Dortmund, OGC Nice, Borussia Monchengladbach and Hertha BSC.

Throughout his long career, Favre has also scooped numerous trophies including the DFL-SuperCup, two Swiss league titles as well as a further two Swiss cups.

Whilst it may be argued he didn’t win a league title in the big European leagues, an aspect that could be true with Favre having failed in his task to claim major silverware in France or Germany, breaking the monopoly of the likes of Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain was certainly a harder task than first anticipated.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-roy-keane-nicky-butt-jesse-marsch-scott-brown” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

It might well be suggested that he would certainly be better suited to claiming silverware in Scotland where there is less of a stranglehold on domestic honours.

Even away from trophies, Favre managed to accumulate a highly impressive record with Dortmund. He claimed a 61% win rate in his time at the Signal Iduna Park.

Compare this to Howe’s 40% win rate whilst with Bournemouth and it is clear that there is a huge difference between the two managers.

Whilst Favre’s spell in Germany did come to an unpleasant ending, it did not stop his players holding him in high regard; 44-cap German international Marco Reus stating that he is “the best” coach he has ever had. And, Mario Gotze simply said that the manager’s approach to things is “outstanding”.

So whilst Favre is part of Celtic’s contingency planning in relation to Howe, the Swiss really should be first choice instead.

With his big-game experience in the Champions League, Favre could help ensure Celtic are a force in European football as they have been domestically in recent seasons, and that just makes him a perfect fit for Desmond.

The former Dortmund boss’ arrival at Celtic Park could kick-start a fresh new era at the club.

Villa need more from Trezeguet and El Ghazi

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has called for Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi to deliver more in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.

Villa have been without leading man Jack Grealish in recent weeks and it has impacted them. In his absence, they have won just one of their last five matches and have scored just three goals in that period.

Evidently, manager Dean Smith needs a bit more from his attacking players, and Hendrie has put the spotlight on both £8.75m man Trezeguet and the £8m El Ghazi, calling for the duo to step up.

Discussing the two wide men, the ex-Villa star told FFC:

“There has to be a balance. You’ve got to have that work ethic, but you’ve also got to have that creativity and that’s where I feel that Trezeguet just falls short. It’s great when you’re away from home and, you know, you need to get bodies behind the ball and work hard. He does the ugly side of the game well, but I’d like to see him doing a little bit more going the other way.”

Regarding El Ghazi, Hendrie said:

“He is very inconsistent at times. He comes on and he looks an absolute threat, he looks a goal threat, he looks hungry for scoring goals. But I think the way Villa play, sometimes I think you need a bit of a balance. He doesn’t always have to come inside and take them shots on, he’s got to be looking to maybe slip [Ollie] Watkins through.”

Trezeguet scored six goals in the Premier League last season but is yet to find the back of the net in the current campaign. As for El Ghazi, the 25-year-old has actually bettered his record from last term.

He has registered six strikes, two more than his entire league total from 2019/20, showing that the Dutch winger can produce moments of quality. However, only one of those goals came in the absence of Grealish, the 1-0 win over Leeds.

Undoubtedly, Villa’s attack is lacking at times, especially when their captain is unavailable, perhaps giving Smith something to think about ahead of the summer transfer window.

Glasgow Rangers handed major boost in chase for Airdrie’s Thomas Robert

Glasgow Rangers have been given a major boost in the race to sign Thomas Robert, after Airdrie director of football Stuart Millar said it is “no surprise” that he has been linked with a move away from New Broomfield.

What’s the word?

According to The Scottish Sun, Hibernian and Hearts are keeping tabs on the midfielder, whilst Celtic have also shown a keen interest in acquiring his services.

Robert, who is the son of former Newcastle United star Laurent, has been in such fine form since he arrived at the Diamonds from Montpellier in the summer.

And with recent reports suggesting that Rangers have entered the race to sign Robert in January, they have received a major boost as the League One side seem resigned to his fate.

Millar said: “We are aware a number of clubs are monitoring Thomas Robert’s situation, which is no great surprise considering the impact the young lad has had in a short space of time at our club, winning both our club and divisional player of the month awards.”

Snap him up, Wilson

With the Diamonds seemingly admitting defeat, Rangers will have to act quickly if they want to lure him to Ibrox in the winter transfer window.

Robert, 20, is a Parisian-born right-winger who has shown signs of early promise at New Broomfield, whilst his contract is set to expire next summer, which means both sides of the Old Firm could secure his services on a pre-contract deal if they can reach an agreement with his representatives.

In 11 appearances so far this season, the youngster has scored three goals and supplied two assists in the league. In stark contrast, Jordan Jones has managed just one goal in four games for the Gers in all competitions, via Transfermarkt.

Millar was effusive in his praise for the Frenchman after he turned down a four-year deal with Montpellier to agree terms with the Diamonds, saying: “We are delighted to get someone to the club who is the stature of Thomas Robert. He comes from a top football background with his father having played in the Premier League, for PSG and for the French national team. It’s a major signing coup for the club and we are absolutely thrilled. He had the option to sign a four-year deal with Montpellier but didn’t want to be playing under-23 football. He wanted to go overseas and test himself.

“He could have played for any team in Europe, really, he had two teams from the Bundesliga trying to tempt him just last week but this was agreed and waiting approval from the French football authorities. He came to the club and was impressed and decided this was the place he wanted to play his football. He is a talent and comes with a real pedigree. He could play anywhere he wants, he is that good.”

It’s fair to say that Robert could turn out to be an absolute bargain if Ross Wilson can get a deal over the line in January, as his sell-on value will continue to rise if he can maintain his current run of form.

AND in other news, Glasgow Rangers must reward Glen Kamara with a new contract…

Arsenal could land a superb bargain in Norwich’s Emi Buendia

According to Football.London, Emiliano Buendia is one of a number of players who is on Arsenal’s transfer shortlist.

What’s the story?

The Gunners have been crying out for someone with a bit of creativity all season, with Mikel Arteta’s side managing just ten goals in their opening 11 Premier League games.

Now, Football.London have claimed that the north Londoners do appear to be keen on addressing that issue in the upcoming January transfer window, with Buendia among the names being considered.

However, it is added that no contact has been made as of yet, and that any departure from Carrow Road next month will be entirely dependent on the Championship side themselves.

Forget Aouar

Whilst the summer transfer window saw Lyon prodigy Houssem Aouar being linked with a switch to the Emirates, the Gunners could land themselves a very good alternative in Buendia.

The Argentine of course played in the Premier League with Norwich last season, and his total of 86 chances created were only bettered by Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold – not bad company at all.

Given that he is now playing in the division below, Arsenal should surely feel confident in their ability to convince Norwich to allow Buendia to leave.

The £11.7m-rated ace has been dubbed a “revelation”, and the diminutive play-maker could offer the kind of creative spark and genius that the Gunners desperately need to fix their shocking attack.

Meanwhile, the Gunners should also look to target this sensation in the January transfer window.
