Lorgat backs 'aggressive' changes to selection policy

Transformation targets for South Africa’s national team could be reviewed as CSA continues to push for what CEO Haroon Lorgat has termed “aggressive,” change

Firdose Moonda21-Apr-2015Transformation targets for South Africa’s national team could be reviewed as CSA continues to push for what CEO Haroon Lorgat has termed “aggressive,” change. In the aftermath of the Vernon Philander-selection controversy, CSA explicitly clarified their selection policy includes a guideline on transformation, which calls the consideration of at least four players of colour in the starting XI.That number was officially the quota from 1998 until 2007 and has remained in place, albeit it unofficially. Now it has been termed a target. Effectively, it means the quota has remained the same at international level for 17 years even as it increases at lower levels and the time may have come for an adjustment.”We haven’t looked at the national team. We’ve got what we had for many years. It’s something we will review in due course,” Lorgat said.Since Lorgat took office in July 2013, CSA have committed themselves to increasing the pace of transformation quicker than had been done in the past. Two months into Lorgat’s tenure, they held their first transformation (conference) in over a decade and at its conclusion expanded the domestic quota for the 2013-14 season to include that at least one of the four players of colour in franchise teams had to be black African. In the 2014-15 season, the overall quota was increased to five players of colour, which should include two black Africans and in 2015-16, franchise and semi-professional teams will be required to field at least six players of colour, including at least three black Africans and Lorgat has indicated the trend will continue.”As far as transformation is concerned, we make no apologies. We made it very clear at the outset of my tenure when we hosted the transformation that we will pursue transformation aggressively and in a very responsible way,” he said at the launch of the Africa T20 Cup in Johannesburg, where he also chided a journalist for using the word quota. “I think you should get your vocabulary right. We always say targets,” Lorgat told the reporter who asked whether the national quota would be increased. While defending the targets, Lorgat has also had to defend against public perception of them, which he said has not been handled responsibly by the media. “I would hope that the media in turn will report in a responsible way because that is not my view as I sit here now,” Lorgat said.He referred specifically to the World Cup semi-final and Philander selection row, which CSA put to bed on Saturday night after an internal investigation confirmed Lorgat was consulted about the starting XI, but rejected claims there was board interference in the team.”We made clear how we will manage it and above all, don’t forget the concept of merit selection and that seems to be something that people sidestep. Philander is a world-class bowler who deserves to be there, unlike what some of you might think. That issue is closed. We explained it like it was. I hope you will take it in that spirit,” he said. “We picked the best XI. I am not sure how many more times we need to say that. On the day. That’s what it was.”Claims that Philander was included to meet the target sprouted days after South Africa were knocked out of the World Cup but were propped up last week when Mike Horn, South Africa’s motivational consultant, referred to politics playing a role in selection. Horn spoke to journalists at the Laureus Sports Awards in Shanghai, and not in a capacity connected to CSA, who later issued a press release saying Horn had written to them and explained his quotes were taken out of context.Horn has made not further comments but Lorgat reiterated that stance. “I haven’t spoken to Mike. All I can say is that he is not the best in English and he has been put on a spot he should not have been put on,” Lorgat said. When asked whether CSA’s transformation strategy was thrown awry by the fact that Aaron Phangiso, the only black African in the World Cup squad, did not play a single game, Lorgat refuted that suggestion. “You seem to forget the criteria for selection in the national team is merit. We’ve had Imran Tahir who was the incumbent in the spinners’ role, Phangiso was back-up.”

WI rebel Richard Austin dies aged 60

Former West Indies allrounder Richard Austin has died in hospital, aged 60

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Feb-2015Former West Indies allrounder Richard Austin has died in hospital, aged 60. Austin won three caps for his country but was ostracised after participating in the 1982-83 rebel tour to South Africa, which led to him becoming homeless and developing a drug problem.Austin, who was also a talented table-tennis player and good enough at football to represent Jamaica, was picked for two West Indies Tests against Australia in 1978, having made his ODI debut earlier on the same tour. He was dropped over signing for Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket, prompting a walkout by West Indies’ players.Although his form remained good, he was never recalled and a few years later was tempted to go to South Africa, despite the country’s isolation due to the apartheid regime – a tour which had far-reaching effects for those on it.A batsman who could bowl medium-pace or offspin, Austin was for a time known as the “right-handed Sobers”. But his career was ended at the age of 29 by playing in South Africa and he was reduced to living off the streets in Kingston, addicted to cocaine, known to local children as “Danny Germs”.”He was a tremendous talent – a terrific cricketer and a very good footballer … a wonderful team man,” Clive Lloyd, who captained Austin, told CMC Sports. “While he was in the team, he did really well and made a very good contribution. He was also a fantastic footballer and played other sports as well. I first met him when he played for Jamaica and you could see his immense talent. He was very stylish and you could tell he would go on to play at the highest level. He played Test cricket and World Series cricket and he opened the batting and also batted in the middle, as well as bowled a bit of offspin and was a very good fielder. He was a great utility man.”

Haddin cleared of shoulder fracture

Australia are hopeful that Brad Haddin will not only be fit for the first Test against India at the Gabba next month, but also for part of the ODI series against South Africa that precedes it. Haddin has been cleared of any fracture in his right shoulder after landing awkwardly while diving for a catch on the second morning in Abu Dhabi, where he spent Pakistan’s entire second innings off the field.Haddin also spent part of the first innings in the rooms having the injury assessed, and David Warner and Glenn Maxwell both filled in behind the stumps at various times throughout the game. Haddin batted in both innings of the 356-run defeat but appeared hampered by a lack of fluent movement from his shoulder. Early indications, however, are that the injury is not as major as it appeared.”Brad has an AC joint injury that we x-rayed during the game and that showed there was no fracture,” Alex Kountouris, the team physio said. “He will return to Sydney and have treatment and depending on his recovery that will determine his availability for the ODI series against South Africa.”Before Haddin sustained the injury, the selectors had already announced that he would be rested from the first two one-day games against South Africa in Perth, where Matthew Wade will take the gloves. It is possible that Wade will remain in the side throughout the the five-match series, but if Haddin responds well after arriving home he might make an appearance late in the series.Had he been ruled out of the first Test against India, which starts in Brisbane on December 4, it would not have been obvious who would have replaced him in the Test side. Wade is the keeper with the most recent Test experience, but Western Australia’s Sam Whiteman is well-regarded by the selectors, while Queensland’s Chris Hartley and Peter Nevill of New South Wales would have been safe options.”Yeah definitely,” captain Michael Clarke said when asked if he was confident Haddin would be fit to take on India. “I’m hopeful that he’ll still take part in the one-day series against South Africa.”I think he went for a scan and there was no break there so it’s just bruising. He’s in a little bit of pain still today but I think in 10 days’ time and Hadds will be a lot better than where he is now.”

'Showed we could win big moments' – du Plessis

Returning home after South Africa’s semifinal exit in the World T20, Faf du Plessis said his team had shown they could perform under pressure, a bugbear for them in previous world tournaments

Firdose Moonda07-Apr-2014

South African captains have previously returned from major tournaments red-faced. Kepler Wessels, Hansie Cronje, Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers have had to explain why the teams they led crashed out in varyingly curious or embarrassing ways.Faf du Plessis came back rosy cheeked. Even though the group he was in charge of did not bring home the thing South African supporters wanted most – a trophy – they learned a lesson which du Plessis believes will ensure they capture a cup in the near future.”Previously we deserved a lot of criticism we got for the way we played in big moments. But now this team has showed we can perform under high pressure,” du Plessis said. “To get 170 in the semi-final after losing a wicket in the first over was a really good effort. In terms of playing big moments, this team has showed we can also do it.”South Africa’s batting has been their Achilles’ heel in major tournaments in the past. At the Champions Trophy last June, despite batting fairly well throughout the event, they slipped to 80 for 8 in the semi-final against England before staging a small recovery while their stumbling in their chasing a modest 222 against New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup in Dhaka remains fresh in the mind. When du Plessis arrived at the Shere Bangla Stadium to prepare for South Africa’s shootout against India, “the first thing I thought about was my scrum in the middle with the New Zealand players that day,” he said. Du Plessis was involved with the run-out of AB de Villiers that derailed the chase, back in 2011, and was involved in an on-field altercation with Kyle Mills which was the first sign of South Africa’s implosion.Even though that was more three years ago and du Plessis was a relative rookie at the time, the experience was fresh in his mind. South Africa wanted to guard against the mistakes they had made that day, and their many other fluffs before the final hurdle in previous tournaments. “Because we played the first week in Chittagong, we felt very confident when we went to Dhaka,” du Plessis said. “The past experience wasn’t too much of a factor so I didn’t feel it necessary to talk too much about it.”But when Quinton de Kock was dismissed at the end of the first over, to cap off a underwhelming showing in what du Plessis dubbed “the most pressure he has played under,” South Africa could have unraveled. Du Plessis was the next man in and knew he could not repeat the 2011 episode. He built partnerships with Hashim Amla and JP Duminy and South Africa posted what he thought was a winning total. It went wrong in the field where “too many extras,” cost South Africa and although du Plessis is concerned about the wides, he does not want that to detract from the way his team defended totals in their other three matches. South Africa’s matches against New Zealand, Netherlands and England went deep and they left it late to assert themselves. That they could set themselves up for a final assault through the man du Plessis said he considers South Africa’s man of the tournament, Imran Tahir, and could then close the deal with Dale Steyn represents progress for both du Plessis and coach Russell Domingo. Another South African side would not have won matches they seemed destined to lose. This one did and that experience will stand them in good stead for tournaments to come, starting with fifty-over World Cup next year.Du Plessis is not currently part of South Africa’s ODI set-up, after he was dropped ahead of the India series last December, but he hopes the door will still be open for him. He said one of the primary issues confronting the team’s preparation for the tournament is squad certainty, which will largely depend on the availability of Jacques Kallis. The all-rounder remains interested in turning out at the event and will play in most of the almost 30 ODIs South Africa have planned before the competition to work on combinations. For once, that could be the only thing South Africa have to worry about because the a lot of the extensive mental preparation they usually do would have been taken care of at this World T20. “I am very happy with the team’s performances. Apart from not winning, I was really proud of how everyone performed. For me it wasn’t a disappointment. We’ve proven to ourselves we can play in big moments,” du Plessis said.South Africa have seen first-hand that it can be done. They also watched Sri Lanka break an 18-year trophy drought to earn another title and du Plessis, in particular, was heartened by Sri Lanka’s performance. “I was very happy for Sri Lanka. I thought India were too strong for them but they proved me wrong. Where Sri Lanka did well is that they restricted India’s powerhouse batting,” he said. “I am really happy that they also had a chance to win something.” Now he will hope that South Africa, like Sri Lanka, will not have to lose in five finals before they finally win one.

Akbar takes 10 in low-scoring PTV win

Seamer Rizwan Akbar finished the match with 10 for 89 – his best figures in first-class cricket – to help Pakistan Television secure a five-wicket win over State Bank of Pakistan in Islamabad.Akbar took five-wicket hauls in both innings, leaving PTV chasing a target of 132, which they overhauled in 32.4 overs thanks to a fifty from Nawaz Ahmed. Akbar had run through State Bank’s middle order in the first innings to bundle them out for 178 – Mohammad Saad’s 97 being the only major source of runs. But PTV did not fare much better in their first essay either. Fast bowlers Mohammad Naved and Tabish Khan picked up seven wickets between them to skittle PTV out for 159 inside 50 overs. With a 19-run first-innings lead, State Bank would have hoped to push for a big total, but only three of their batsmen entered double figures, and once again, Akbar rattled their line-up to dismiss them for 112.Ahmed Said’s unbeaten 76 in Water and Power Development Authority‘s first innings proved crucial as they went on to beat Habib Bank Limited by 10 wickets in a low-scoring game in Islamabad.Replying to Habib Bank’s 180, WAPDA were 180 for eight before wicketkeeper Said put on 72 for the last two wickets with Azhar Attari and Mohammad Haseeb, who between them hung on for 81 balls to score 11. Said finished unbeaten on 76 off 147 balls, with 12 fours. For Habib Bank, left-arm spinner Mohammad Aslam took five wickets.WAPDA’s 72-run lead proved match-winning, as Habib Bank folded for 131 in their second innings. Seam bowler Attari finished with seven wickets in the match. Chasing 60, WAPDA reached their target in just 10.2 overs.Offspinner Atif Maqbool took ten wickets as United Bank Limited beat Khan Research Laboratories by six wickets in Rawalpindi.Having sent KRL in to bat, United Bank bowled them out for 76, with Maqbool picking up 6 for 22. United Bank didn’t fare much better themselves, as they were bowled out for 153 with left-arm spinner Saeed Anwar jr grabbing five wickets. That lead of 77, made possible by Wajihuddin’s 140-ball 50, was to prove crucial.KRL batted much better in their second innings, with Usman Salahuddin and Ali Khan making 65 each and putting on 117 for the fifth wicket to propel their score to 234. Maqbool took four wickets, while Kashif Bhatti took five with his left-arm spin.United Bank reached their target of 158 in 55.3 overs, as six of their top seven got into double-figures with Mohammad Zohaib and Saeed Bin Nasir chipping in with 40 and 42 respectively.
