Akram Khan steps down as BCB selector

Akram Khan, the former Bangladesh captain, has resigned from his position as chief selector, a week before his contract was to expire. The announcement came following Chittagong Divisional Sports Association’s decision to nominate him as its councillor ahead of the BCB elections, which is likely to be held in the first week of October. He has been a selector since 2007, and became the chief selector in 2011.Akram will continue in his role till the home series against New Zealand ends in early November, by a special arrangement.”I sent my resignation letter on September 18, and it is up to the BCB to accept it,” Akram told reporters. “My extended contract ends this month. But I have volunteered to work during the New Zealand series because [selector Minhazul Abedin] is performing the Hajj during this time. Otherwise, we would be down to one selector – Habibul Bashar.”We will announce the Bangladesh team within the next two days. There won’t be too many changes, as I have always maintained. The average age of our side is 25, so they can play together for another eight to ten years. So there will [be] very little change in this series, if any.”Akram, a former Bangladesh captain, will not only hold voting power as a councillor but he will contest the election for the position of a director. This is why he has to leave his position as a BCB employee as it is illegal for them to contest an election. He is one of 71 councillors from divisional and district associations, who will elect 10 BCB directors. There are 58 councillors from the Dhaka clubs who will elect 12 directors while in the third category, forty-five councillors from various organisations including education boards, BKSP, police, etc, will elect one director. The National Sports Council, the country’s regulatory board for sports, will nominate three directors from 15 councillors, which includes ten former cricketers. The cricketers are former national captains Khaled Mahmud and Gazi Ashraf Hossain, Shahedur Rahman, Dr Asaduzzaman Misha, Mohammad Ali, Ahsanullah Hasan, Hannan Sarkar, Salim Shahed, Niamur Rashid and ASM Faruque. Meanwhile, BCB president Nazmul Hassan has also picked five former captains in his quota of councillors – Shamim Kabir, Roquibul Hasan, Shafiqul Haque Heera, Faruque Ahmed and Khaled Mashud. Bangladesh’s first Test captain Naimur Rahman is also among the representatives, having claimed the councillroship from his native Manikganj district. This year’s election will have the most number of cricketers as councillors.

Bruno Henrique lamenta chances desperdiçadas e critica arbitragem

No final do jogo, o cara (Marrony) dobra o joelho e cai.

Bangalore look to rise within top four

Preview of the match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in Ranchi

Start time 1600 (1030 GMT)Moises Henriques has lived up to his reputation•BCCI

Big PictureIt is likely that Chennai Super Kings will find more support in Ranchi than Kolkata Knight Riders. The last time the JSCA International Stadium Complex hosted a game, the hometown boy MS Dhoni hit the winning runs in an ODI against England in front of a packed house in a city where his popularity possibly rivals Sourav Ganguly’s in Kolkata. Dhoni’s IPL team, however, won’t be playing in Ranchi this year. Instead, the Ranchi crowd, on paper, should be backing a side on a ventilator this season; it won’t be a surprise if they end up supporting Royal Challengers Bangalore, a team with greater star power and in the running for a spot in the play-offs, or perhaps they will end up backing both.Knight Riders won comfortably against Pune Warriors in their previous game, and Royal Challengers beat Delhi Daredevils narrowly. A win for Royal Challengers will take their tally to nine and them to No.2, though having played one game more than the rest in the top four.Form guideKolkata Knight Riders: WLWLL
Royal Challengers Bangalore: WLWLL
Players to watchMoises Henriques was bought for US$300,000 by Royal Challengers, and he’s repaid them with impressive all-round performances this season. Each time Royal Challengers have posted a score in their last few games, Henriques has played an important role in the death overs with cameos. He has also picked up seven wickets at 22.28.Ryan ten Doeschate had an impact in his first IPL game this season, prompting questions over why Knight Riders hadn’t picked him earlier. Though he doesn’t rate his own bowling very highly, he remains among the more experienced Twenty20 players, having played in more than 10 countries, and is good enough to qualify as a specialist T20 batsman.Stats and trivia Sunil Narine has an excellent economy-rate in T20 cricket, but one batsman who’s dominated him is Suresh Raina, scoring 47 off 23 balls. Michael Hussey has scored the most runs off him, 54, but that’s come off 61 deliveries. Virat Kohli became the 11th batsman to score 99 in a T20 innings. Raina is the other Indian on the list. There’s also Salman Butt, who made an unbeaten 99 for Lahore Lions against Quetta Bears in 2008. Quotes”At the moment, the competition is pretty open. We still have a fair chance of reaching the play-offs. For me what matters is the remaining three games and we face RCB on Sunday, which is a must-win game for us. Hopefully, we can try and deliver.”

Yorkshire get the better of Essex to march into quarter-finals

Kalis strikes a blow for Tier 2 as T20 County Cup heads towards its final rounds

ESPNcricinfo staff17-May-2025
Sterre Kalis drove the agenda for Yorkshire with 83 not out to beat their Tier 1 opponents Essex by 11 runs and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the Vitality County T20 Cup.Kalis, the Netherlands international, was in imperious touch, hitting 14 fours and one leg-side six in Yorkshire’s total of 188 for 4 in 20 overs.Maddy Ward chipped in with a senior-best score of 43, as the pair shared an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 113 in the last 10.4 overs of the home innings.Essex’s bowlers failed to build any pressure, and their batters rarely looked like reeling in the target as Yorkshire made it six wins from six matches across all competitions. The Eagles finished on 177 for 8, with Beth Langston successfully defending 20 runs off the last over.Yorkshire will host either Devon or Warwickshire at Weetwood next Saturday afternoon in the last eight of a competition billed as the FA Cup of county cricket.Durham secured their own place in the last eight in thrilling style at Exmouth on Friday evening, beating Somerset in a Super Over after both teams posted 124 for 9 in their original 20 overs.Going into the final over of the contest, Somerset needed three runs with one wicket in hand. Katherine Fraser served up five dot-balls before Alex Griffiths scrambled two from the final ball to level the scores.Heather Knight then cracked the first ball of the Super Over for four off Mady Villiers, but after taking a single, Rebecca Odgers was stumped third ball, and when Knight went the same way, the final target was nine. Charlie Dean’s first two balls in reply were thumped for four by Bess Heath, and there was no way back from there.Surrey got the better of Hampshire in a compelling tussle at Beckenham, with Kira Chathli making 95 from 47 balls and Alice Capsey an unbeaten 89 from 45 in Surrey’s imposing 237 for 7. In reply, Maia Bouchier – newly dropped by England – made 53 from 29 balls but lacked support as Hampshire finished on 180 for 9.Kent continued their determined march through the draw, beating Cambridgeshire by 80 runs after posting 193 for 2 in their 20 overs, while The Blaze crushed Oxfordshire by ten wickets after bowling them out for 97.In Saturday’s other tie, Leicestershire had the better of a Midlands tussle with Northamptonshire at Wantage Road, winning by 41 runs after a key innings of 52 from 39 balls by Francesca Sweet. On Sunday, Warwickshire confirmed their place in the last eight by holding off Devon at Budleigh Salterton. After opting to bat first, the Tier 1 side were kept to 136 for 8, Bethan Ellis top-scoring with 37 off 35 balls. In reply, Devon could only muster 98 for 4, despite an unbeaten 51 off 60 from opener Elle Golsworthy.

Joe Denly and Chris Rogers helped Middlesex claim their first CB40 Group A victory of the season after they crushed the Netherlands by eight wickets. The duo put on an unbeaten 166, with Denly finishing four runs shy of a century and Rogers making 83 not out as the visitors overhauled the Netherlands’ 212 for 9 with 16 balls to spare.Paul Stirling was the pick of the Middlesex bowlers with 4 for 27, Steven Crook picked up two wickets and Gareth Berg ran three batsmen out as the hosts were restricted to a manageable total in Voorburg. It was the Netherlands’ first loss of their CB40 campaign after they had beaten Worcestershire and Gloucestershire in their opening two matches. After being put into bat, Netherlands got off to a decent start, with openers Stephan Myburgh and Michael Swart reaching a fifty partnership in the 10th over.Although the latter was run out by Berg for 23 immediately after, Myburgh and Cameron Borgas guided the hosts to 114 for 1. Yet Stirling removed Borgas with his third delivery and then accounted for Myburgh, who struck eight fours in his 66, in his next over.Wickets continued to flow freely thereafter, although Mudassar Bukhari ensured the Netherlands did reach a competitive total. Burkhari, the Pakistan-born allrounder blasted three fours and two sixes and had made 39 off just 30 balls before he was the eighth man out in the 39th over, with Berg claiming another run out. Yet Bukhari’s efforts ensured Middlesex did not simply blow through the lower order as the Netherlands reached 212 for 9.Timm van der Gugten then ensured the visitors got off to a disastrous start in their reply, bowling Dawid Malan for a first-ball duck. But the wicket proved to be a rare highlight in the field for the Netherlands.Stirling followed up his wonderful bowling efforts with a quickfire 28 before being dismissed by Swart in the 10th over.Any hopes the Netherlands had of a collapse were dismissed by the solidity of both Denly and Rogers. Denly was unusually subdued in the early period of his innings yet he gained in confidence and finished on 96 off 117 balls.Rogers settled into his stride immediately and he brought up the winning runs in the 38th over with his sixth four to ensure Middlesex bounced back from last week’s home defeat to Gloucestershire in style.

William Porterfield aims for the top

Ireland enter the World T20 qualifiers with a sizeable weight of expectation upon them. They have positioned themselves at the head of the chasing pack of Associate nations, with plans in place for a push to Test cricket. For Ireland, qualification for the World T20 is essential.Ireland’s stock rose significantly after their famous win over England in March. That result heightened interest in cricket from the Emerald Isle and the team has responded. They ran England close again in August and since September, they have played 15 matches and won 12. More than enough encouragement for their captain, William Porterfield, to believe his side are moving closer to the Test nations.”It will be a massive tournament because we want to be competing with the best teams,” Porterfield said. “It is part of our long-term goals so all our effort will be channeled towards achieving that dream.”We have played a lot more cricket against the major teams and have shown that we belong. In addition, our lads have played a lot of T20 cricket for counties in England so all that experience is going to help the side in the tournament.”Ireland were last in action against Kenya in Mombasa, winning the T20 series 3-0. They will remain in southern Africa until five days before the tournament begins on March 13 in the UAE.”The camp in Port Elizabeth has been about fine tuning our T20 skills,” Porterfield said. “The past few weeks have been a good reminder about our abilities. We are confident that we have covered all aspects of our game.” Ireland’s preparations included a warm-up T20 against Eastern Province which they lost by 21 runs. Chasing 148, they were 75 for 2 before collapsing to 127 all out.Ireland have already made progress in their climb up the cricketing ladder, becoming the first Associate nation to earn a place in the ICC T20 Championship table – that England currently top – after completing the criterion of having played in eight or more T20 matches since August 2009.Drawn against Kenya, Scotland, Namibia, Oman, Italy, Uganda and USA in Group B, Ireland hope to their rise can continue and they can earn their place at the World T20 in September, where they feel they belong.

Nixon eyes IPL coaching stint

Paul Nixon, the former Leicestershire wicketkeeper, is hoping to agree a role with Pune Warriors for next year’s IPL meaning he won’t take up a full-time position with his former county.Nixon, 41, retired at the end of the 2011 season after winning the Friends Life t20 in August but he rejected the offer to become batting coach at Grace Road to take up a role in India.”It was a massively tough decision,” Nixon told the . “But over the last few years I have got involved in other things and I have had an offer from the IPL to go and coach. It’s waiting to be finalised and I would have liked everything to have been done before I turned down the full-time role with Leicestershire. They came to me about the role, we have agreed terms and it’s a case of running it past the board and getting contracts signed.”However, a Pune Warriors official told ESPNcricinfo that Nixon was just one of a number of options that the franchise were considering and that it was premature to suggest a deal was done. The IPL begins on April 4 and Nixon has a contract offer for 80 days. He is hoping this opportunity can lead to future work. “You go and show what you can do and add value to the organisation, and the players, and take it from there,”he said. “I know I can add value. I’ve got a lot of experience in Twenty20 cricket. You have to do a good job and enjoy it.”I like to think I have a canny knack of winning trophies. It would be nice to win one with Pune Warriors, that’s the plan,” said Nixon, who won the County Championships twice with Leicestershire in 1996 and 1998 and three Twenty20 titles in 2003, 2007 and 2011. He also won the National League with Kent in 2001.Leicestershire head coach Phil Whitticase said the door was not closed for Nixon at Grace Road. “Nico could not commit to anything because he had other irons in the fire, but he will be involved in some capacity.”
