CSA cancels external probe into bonus payments

Cricket South Africa turned its back on an independent committee review of its bonus payouts controversy, because the decision to go for an external inquiry was not unanimous at the time and had been seen as “overreaction to the media storm”.A source close to CSA told ESPNcricinfo, that the setting up of an external review committee headed by Judge Pius Langa had “not been approved by all the relevant stakeholders” in South African cricket. The u-turn came about as CSA’s annual general meeting held on August 21 constituted a new board which overturned the decision on the Langa inquiry, but offered no explanation until today. The ‘media storm’ broke in early August after external auditors Deloitte announced irregularities in CSA’s report. On the same day, CSA issued a statement declaring that bonus payouts totalling R4.7m were given out to 40 employees without authorisation from the CSA remunerations committee (REMCO). The South African board added that the bonuses had been paid out after the 2009 Indian Premier League and Champions Trophy, and that Judge Langa been appointed as head of an independent committee to examine the auditing discrepancy pointed out by REMCO.The new board held a teleconference before the Langa commission was due to begin its work in mid-September, in which it was decided to move from an external to an internal inquiry. The board had unanimously agreed on the decision to disband the committee as “all the internal procedures had not been exhausted”. Only when that exercise had been completed, the source said, could the CSA decide on whether an external review into the matter was necessary.Andy O’Connor, a newly appointed CSA member told ESPNcricinfo he was “very comfortable with the decision taken”, believing that it was the right thing to do. “Because the Board comprises independent members, there are checks and balances in place,” O’Connor said. However, not all parties believed that the CSA’s turnaround was appropriate. A South African cricket insider said that CSA had “backpedalled” by disbanding an external commission and replacing it with an internal inquiry. “When that happens it affects transparency and credibility”, he said. The internal commission headed by CSA vice president AK Khan has completed most of its work and is in the process of compiling their report, hoping to have it ready in time for the next board meeting on November 19. The Khan commission report, the source said, would concentrate on two main issues which need clarification.”They will look into why the payments were not reported on initially by REMCO or the auditors, and whether the allocation of payments followed precedent or not.” The precedent being referred to here is the practice of paying bonuses to employees after staging major tournaments, which began after the 2003 World Cup.

Sangakkara backs spinners to succeed

Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has backed his spinners to succeed in the upcoming three-Test series against West Indies that begins in Galle on November 15

Sa'adi Thawfeeq09-Nov-2010Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka captain, has backed his spinners to succeed in the upcoming three-Test series against West Indies that begins in Galle on November 15. Sri Lanka will be playing their first full Test series after the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan but Sangakkara, while admitting that winning Tests without Murali would be tough, said the current attack comprising Rangana Herath, Ajantha Mendis and Suraj Randiv was capable of delivering the desired results.”It is always going to be tough playing Test cricket without Murali,” Sangakkara told reporters in Colombo. “We found that out in the second and third Tests against India. The challenge for anyone coming in and trying to fill those shoes is huge. The best way they can go about is to be themselves not try to be another Murali because that is impossible.”Murali retired from Test cricket on a high, finishing with 800 wickets and helping his team win and take a 1-0 lead against India earlier in the year. However, India fought back in the next two Tests at the SSC and the P Sara Oval, eventually levelling the series.”I think for us as well the expectations of performance [from the spinners] has to be realistic,” Sangakkara said. “For them to come in share the load with the other bowlers and make sure they chip in with what they do best as spinners is to try and take wickets and win matches for us. We have very able spinners in Randiv, Mendis and Herath to match any opposition in the world. They will learn and learn very quickly. We as a side will have to change our thinking and expectations a bit as well to manage that. They are very capable of doing the job required of them.”Sri Lanka enjoy a 6-3 advantage over West Indies in Tests and beat them 2-0 when they last played them at home in 2005. However, Sangakkara warned against any complacency. “We expect nothing less but the best from the West Indies and hopefully we can match them and go beyond,” he said. “West Indies have always been a very competitive side. I enjoyed playing them in Sri Lanka and the West Indies. It took us a long time to register our first Test win in the West Indies even though we have beaten them at home. The challenge is still the same to go out there and win Test matches.”Sangakkara also called on Sri Lanka Cricket to introduce measures to draw more spectators to venues hosting Test cricket. “In Sri Lanka the trend we have seen that in the outstations you’ll always get more spectators coming to see the cricket,” he said. “In Colombo a lot more homes have televisions than in the outstations so a lot more people will actually stay at home to watch.”Also facilities at grounds should encourage families to come and spend the day with their children and make sure they will be looked after free to enjoy a day’s cricket. All of these things have to be in all the stadia in Sri Lanka to ensure that more and more people will come to watch.”If we can have big screens at the grounds with facilities of replays I think we can attract even more.”West Indies begin their tour with a three-day warm-up game on November 10. The teams then play three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20 international.

Jenkinson has rinsed Forest for 128 weeks

While it is often difficult to predict which signings will and won’t work out, recruiting an injury prone individual more often than not tends to end in disaster for the buying party.

That has seemingly proved the case for Nottingham Forest and defender Carl Jenkinson, with the former Arsenal man having endured a torrid time of it at the City Ground, prior to his loan move away from the club in January.

Signed for £2m from the Gunners in the summer of 2019, the Englishman has since made just 15 appearances in all competitions, with both loss of form and fitness issues having perhaps predictably plagued his time at the club.

During his time at the Emirates, the Harlow-born full-back had failed to ever really nail down a regular starting berth, spending much of his eight-year stint out on loan at the likes of West Ham United and Birmingham City, as well as on the treatment table.

After making just 41 Premier League appearances for the north Londoners, he was eventually snapped up by Forest just under three years ago, albeit while never looking like a convincing option as he made just eight league appearances in his debut season.

The form of current Aston Villa and Poland star Matty Cash – as well as an ankle issue sustained just a month into his Forest career – ensured a tricky start to life in Nottingham, with the 6 foot 1 full-back having never recovered from that early setback.

He made just three more league outings the following campaign, with the arrival of Chris Hughton in the dugout bringing a halt to his already sporadic role, with the former Brighton man informing the defender that he could move on at the end of 2020/21 season.

Despite sticking it out with the second-tier side, the appointment of Steve Cooper was the final nail in the coffin, with the 30-year-old having not featured for the club since an FA Cup fourth-round tie against Swansea City in January 2021.

After a year out in the footballing wilderness, the £450k-rated man secured a surprise temporary move to Australian outfit Melbourne City over the winter, where he has since netted twice in 17 league outings.

In truth, Cooper and co will have been happy to offload some of the player’s hefty £27k-per-week wages, with Jenkinson having cost the club a whopping £5m – including his initial transfer fee – since his move from Arsenal, rinsing the club for a total of 128 weeks.

Thankfully, with just a few months remaining on his existing deal, the one-time Charlton Athletic man will likely be moving on this summer, bringing an end to what’s been a tumultuous and costly last few years for all concerned.

Ele recusou a proposta e continua no Cruzeiro.

– O termômetro da alegria do time é o Thiago Neves.

A nova diretoria entendeu minha situação.

Steve O'Keefe takes Hauritz's spot in Test squad

Steve O’Keefe’s dramatic rise from New South Wales fringe player has continued with him replacing Nathan Hauritz in Australia’s Test squad for the two games against Pakistan. O’Keefe, a left-arm spinner, impressed with nine wickets in Australia A’s two matches with Sri Lanka A over the past two weeks to gain an unexpected promotion.Nathan Hauritz was sent home with a foot injury suffered in the opening ODI against England, leaving the legspinner Steven Smith to eye a Test debut in the opening match at Lord’s from July 13. O’Keefe, 25, is also from New South Wales and he stood out in the opening “A” fixture this month by taking 7 for 35 and scoring 61 and 47.Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said O’Keefe deserved his chance. “Stephen has performed strongly in the recent Australia A series against Sri Lanka A in Queensland and is a good young all-round cricketer,” he said. However, he has played only eight first-class matches and was a surprise selection for Australia A, gaining a spot while Victoria’s Jon Holland and Tasmania’s Jason Krejza had off-season surgery. O’Keefe was born in Malaysia and spent two years there before his father, who worked for the Royal Australian Air Force, was posted back home. When he spoke to Cricinfo last week O’Keefe said he was hoping the “A” series would set him up for next summer at New South Wales, where he is one of seven slow bowlers fighting for a spot. “From my point of view I can’t really rest, knowing those guys are around,” he said. “A couple have played Test cricket, one will, there are some young guys, who knows how good they could be?” O’Keefe is now an outside chance to show his wares to the wider world.

Spurs could now make late Johnstone bid

As per a report in The Daily Mirror’s print edition (28.01.21, pg. 58, via The 72), a transfer update has come out of Tottenham Hotspur involving West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eye Johnstone move…

The Baggies ace will be a name familiar to Lilywhites supporters given he has been linked repeatedly before, with talkSPORT most recently claiming Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici remain in contention for his signature.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-2/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tottenham, joined by the likes of Southampton and West Ham, are consistently mentioned as interested clubs with Johnstone’s contract at the Hawthorns set to expire soon.

If West Brom are to make a profit, they must cash-in over the next two days or risk losing him for nothing at the end of 2021/2022.

Johnstone’s manager, Valerien Ismael, left him out of West Brom’s last squad to face Preston North End – citing it as a behind-the-scenes ‘issue’ and one which will remain ‘internal’ (Birmingham Live).

The Latest: Spurs ‘could make a last minute move’…

After this development, it is claimed by The Mirror (via The 72) that Spurs could now ‘make a last minute move’ to sign the 28-year-old before deadline.

The fellow usual suspects, West Ham and Southampton, are also mentioned as clubs who may make an eleventh hour bid.

The Verdict: Priority?

Signing Johnstone should, at the very most, be a priority for the summer window when he is a free agent – especially since Conte has four other priority positions to strengthen before January 31.

The Italian wants a right-wing-back, midfielder, left-sided central defender and a striker through the door at N17 but time is very much running out (Alasdair Gold).

Johnstone comes with merit, with the Three Lions ace even being called ‘unreal’ by former Premier League shot stopper Paddy Kenny for his form in the Midlands over this last year.

Meanwhile, Spurs favourite Glenn Hoddle raved about the 6 foot 3 powerhouse in a column for The Evening Standard – branding Johnstone ‘outstanding’.

Plaudits like these don’t come from nowhere, but with time ticking down, Conte must surely be looking at other targets first.

Ten batsmen in Canada’s innings reached double-digits, and the extras furthered their tally by 34 runs.Canada built on a strong performance on the first day by Ashish Bagai, who had helped steer his team to 350 for 6 and Dhaniram, together with the lower order, got them to a score greater than what they would have expected at the start of the second day.For Afghanistan, legspinner Samiullah Shenwari grabbed 4 for 118, but the bowlers were handled quite comfortably as Canada reached a virtually invincible position.
