Transfer Focus: Patrick Twumasi could provide serious competition for Scott Sinclair

[ad_pod ]

Celtic could make a move for Ghanaian winger Patrick Twumasi, according to website Footballghana.com.

What’s the story?

Twumasi has a prior history with the Hoops having scored a double against them in UEFA Champions League qualifying in 2017, giving Brendan Rodgers’ then newly crowned ‘Invincibles’ side a scare in Kazakhstan against Astana.

His second half efforts had Celtic’s opponents 4-1 up on the night and on the verge of completing a stunning second leg comeback, with only the finger tips of Craig Gordon denying a hat-trick that would have made things critical for the Hoops, who eventually progressed.

How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…

The 25-year-old has since moved on to La Liga outfit Alaves and that’s where he could be leaving this summer, with Footballghana.com reporting that FC Copenhagen and Celtic are interested in the player.

The outlet reckon that the Hoops almost signed him last year and could return again for him this time around.

Despite a difficult season in Spain, he does have a bit of pedigree that suggests he could be a useful player for the Hoops next season.

Sinclair replacement?

Scott Sinclair’s contract was recently extended for another year but despite scoring 17 goals last season he’s come under serious criticism for his performances over the last 18 months.

He barely got a look in under Neil Lennon either, with the new Hoops boss often preferring players such as Jonny Hayes or Mikey Johnston to play on the left flank.

Twumasi did not score once in La Liga last term but it’s his form for Astana, specifically in Europe, that should have Celtic interested.

In the 2017/18 season he scored a monster ten goals and assisted three times in 14 European appearances, over half of which came in the Europa League Group Stage and Round of 32.

That’s the kind of attacking pedigree Celtic need at the club and Twumasi has the ability to play on both the right and left flanks, potentially replacing the need for the faltering Sinclair.

Rangers: Timm Klose would make the perfect Worrall replacement

Frankly, Rangers need to upgrade nearly every position in their squad this summer. In an ideal world, they wouldn’t have had to touch Joe Worrall’s position though, but he looks like he’ll return to Nottingham Forest as it stands, so Timm Klose is the best option.

It’s not ideal for Gerrard to have to bring new players into positions he wouldn’t have wanted to alter. But that’s the situation.

Indeed, it’s looking like he’s got his eye on Swiss 30-year-old Klose from Norwich according to The Scotsman, having been linked with towards the back end of April.

The centre-back’s contract is up in the summer so at least it won’t drain money from areas like centre-forward and the number 10 role where the club really do need to spend their money. To that end, he’s in his prime and Gerrard needs more experienced players to go with the young lads he’s brought in.

He’s played 31 times for Championship winners Norwich this season, even bagging four goals and an assist. All in all, he’s been a rock, and that’s exactly what Ibrox needs to allow the creative players to do their thing without the worry of leaking goals.

Next season is massive for the Gers. The fans are expecting improvement from this season and that means winning silverware. Having an experienced centre-back who has achieved success can lead them to victory.

He might not be as young or dynamic as Worrall, but he brings qualities that a young lad like him will only acquire with age.

Klose would be the perfect replacement if Gerrard can tempt him to Scotland.

Fraser’s arrival at Arsenal could be bad news for this Arsenal defender

[ad_pod ]

According to The Mirror, Ryan Fraser is ready to quit Bournemouth this summer and pursue a move to a top six club after negotiations on a new contract ended.

What’s the word, then?

Ryan Fraser’s contract is due to expire in the summer of 2020, meaning he could leave for free and enter negotiations with other clubs from January next year.

It was thought the winger would hold out for another 12 months to make his move, but the latest reports suggest he is prepared to leave the club this summer as the player ended talks over a new deal.

Arsenal are reportedly one of Fraser’s admirers, who has so far registered seven goals and 13 assists in this Premier League campaign.

The Bournemouth star has reportedly attracted the attention of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea as well, with his assists tally matching that of Eden Hazard and surpassing Christian Eriksen and Raheem Sterling.

Kolasinac to suffer

Arsenal’s long pursuit for a winger under Unai Emery could finally come to an end in the form of a swoop for Fraser. He predominantly operates on the left-hand side of the pitch, a position currently occupied by Alex Iwobi. However, there’s another Arsenal player in particular who could suffer from this signing.

Sead Kolasinac has been one of Arsenal’s players of the season, especially when he’s operated as a left wing-back. He possesses immense power, a cultured first touch and plenty of vision and execution in his end product to make him one of the most dangerous attacking threats at the club, if not in the league.

However, when Emery has chosen to field a four-at-the-back system, playing with full-backs instead of wing-backs, Nacho Monreal tends to be preferred to the ex-Schalke man.

Emery has been guilty of regularly switching his formations in an attempt to fix the lack of productivity Arsenal have from out wide. He’s played a 3-5-2 to allow his side to attack down the wings more effectively than they would if Iwobi and Henkrikh Mkhitaryan were to start.

One fan is happy (but very confused) after Wolves beat Arsenal in the video below…

With the arrival of the Bournemouth winger, the left hand-side may be the first issue solved this summer for the Spanish coach as he looks to revert to his preferred four-at-the-back system in time for next season. But that in turn would harm Kolasinac’s chances of getting into the lineup as Arsenal’s wing-back.

The stats suggest that Monreal does fair a lot better at left-back than Kolasinac, but doesn’t boast his attacking prowess either. The Spanish left-back has registered more tackles, interceptions, headed clearances and duels won over the Bosnian but Kolasinac’s numbers going forward are incredibly impressive, with five assists to Monreal’s three, more big chances created per game, more crosses and a better crossing accuracy than the Spaniard.

Signing a winger, whether it be Fraser or someone else, will surely damage Kolasinac’s chances of starting for Arsenal unless he can adapt himself to the left-back role more naturally and find a defensive discipline that he’s so far lacked in his time in North London.

Crystal Palace: James Tomkins injury blow couldn’t have come at a worse time

Despite getting back to winning ways at the weekend, Crystal Palace suffered another blow when star centre-back James Tomkins had to be taken off after suffering a groin injury. Indeed, while we’re awaiting confirmation as to its seriousness, Football.London reported at the time that Roy Hodgson had hinted he could be out for the rest of the season.

Especially now that the Eagles have some daunting task ahead in the next couple of weeks, not having their leader in defence can cost them badly. Tomkins has been a rock in their defence throughout the season, bailing them out of trouble and neutralizing some intimidating strikers at the same time.

Alongside Mamadou Sakho, the former West Ham man has given the club a solid base, one making up for their relatively poor attacking threat.

Tomkins, who is valued at £7.2 million (by Transfermarkt), has certainly been consistent in fending off danger and helped the Eagles keep 8 clean-sheets in his 29 appearances. Along with that, he’s recorded a 55% tackling success, made 63 interceptions and 213 clearances. When it comes to being tough, he’s won 116 aerial battles (stats via Premier League), bullying strikers and containing their threat amicably.

However, his absence will now badly be felt as Palace face Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton in their next three fixtures. Scott Dann and Martin Kelly might’ve seen out the result against Newcastle, but repeating it over 90 minutes against the upcoming nightmare could end up crumbling their momentum.

Unless Crystal Palace keep a solid defensive shape, they won’t be able to attack with full force either. Roy Hodgson might’ve built a reputation for being a giant killer with Palace, yet surviving the upcoming onslaught without their dominant centre-half is now almost an impossible task.

Palace fans, do you think Tomkins’ presence will be missed in the upcoming big matches? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Man City fans fume at FA Cup final announcement

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City fans have come under fire of late after they failed to sell out for their FA Cup semi-final against Brighton & Hove Albion, a game which took place just a few days after empty seats were visible at the Etihad Stadium in their fixture against Cardiff City.

Predictably, the anti-City Twitter brigade turned out in their numbers to slate the fan base, actively turning a blind eye to City’s relentless fixture list which naturally forces supporters to pick and choose the financially-draining trips to watch their side in action.

Victory over the Seagulls secured a final date against Watford next month, and the FA have already announced details for the fixture, including prices, date and kick-off time.

In response to the news, the Citizens faithful were outraged by the ticket prices, the 5pm kick-off time and the fact 28,000 tickets will be given to each club, leaving 34,000 leftover for neutrals and corporate.

There’s good news for fans of City, Liverpool, Spurs and United in the video below…

Naturally, the prices are hardly a break from the status quo but in the midst of an incredibly expensive season it seems the fans are beginning to feel the squeeze, while the fact neutrals will outweigh either set of supporters is a damning indictment on the state of the modern game.

Here’s what the City fans have had to say about the FA Cup Final announcement…

The Chalkboard: Crystal Palace have opportunity to make it three out of three this weekend

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace host Huddersfield this weekend in a game that means much more to the visitors despite the Eagles having lost their last two – league and FA Cup quarter-final clashes with Brighton and Watford, respectively – as Jan Siewert’s side will be mathematically relegated if they suffer defeat and Southampton and Burnley both win.

Besides the importance of getting three points to propel them further up the table, the game represents Palace with the opportunity to repeat their feat of the last two seasons.

On the chalkboard

The Terriers have had a dismal season and amassed just 14 points, scoring 18 goals. Dropping down to the Championship looks certain but could become a reality if they lose at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

Fortunately for them, Palace’s home form isn’t great – they would be in the bottom three if not for their away results, which include a 3-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium – so there remains hope for the Yorkshire outfit.

Palace, though, have a recent history of relegating teams and will give the game their all in pursuit of three points. So will they repeat the feat achieved in the last two seasons this weekend?

Hull, Stoke… Huddersfield?

The SE25 outfit secured Premier League survival in 2016/17 with an emphatic 4-0 win over Hull, a result which relegated the Tigers and then, the following season, they took three points from Stoke and thus ended the Potters’ 10-year stay in the top flight. Will they do it again this campaign at the expense of Huddersfield?

Recent results suggest they can – the Eagles have won the last three meetings in all competitions without conceding – although they will be haunted by their 3-0 opening day defeat of the 2017/18 campaign.

Did Gareth Southgate pick Kieran Trippier over “the best full-back prospect in the world”? Bhavs makes his case in the video below…

The Terriers have lost their last three but were unlucky not to come away from West Ham with a result and in Karlan Grant, they look to have a real threat on the counter – something Palace struggle to defend against. Will Roy Hodgson’s side get the job done this weekend? Let us know in the comments below…

Liverpool: The two biggest games remaining in their title challenge

The Premier League has reached the closing stages. With less than 10 games less to play it really is squeaky bum time for Liverpool. Obviously, not many Kopites reading this would have rejected the chance to be in this position if offered it at the start of the season, though the manner in which they surrendered a lead on Manchester City means the pressure really is on.

Not to be too cliché, but Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool squad have eight cup finals left to play. Win them all and their destiny isn’t even in their own hands but that’s all they can do. One of the best ever league campaigns in the club’s illustrious history surely deserves a prize, right? This is Liverpool we’re talking about.

With that in mind, here, we are going to take a look at a couple that may stop them from winning the ultimate prize. Or give them the boost to do exactly that.

Chelsea (Home, 14th April)

Chelsea has always been a fixture in red on Liverpool’s calendar, and with the points up for grabs being the difference for a top 4 finish for Chelsea, or a Premier League title for Liverpool, it will truly be a game to turn heads.

We’ve been here before. Someone slipped but that doesn’t really tell the whole story, does it? Brendan Rodgers playing into Jose Mourinho’s tactical trap back in 2014 didn’t help of course, so winning this fixture would be a huge psychological boost.

Even in more recent matters, Liverpool will want to right the wrong that happened to them in the cup, when Eden Hazard silenced Anfield with a wonderful solo goal.

The Blues haven’t lost a game at Anfield since 2012. They’ve got to at some point.

Newcastle (Away, 4th May)

Newcastle vs Liverpool has always been an exciting fixture for both sets of fans, being the fixture with the most goals scored in it over the course of Premier League history.

Liverpool have struggled to get solid results in recent seasons at St. James’ Park, having last found a victory in 2013,  and with the new found form of the Magpies, the Reds will have to be wary of a slip up similar to Manchester City’s earlier in the season, which will only boost the Toon Army’s spirit.

With the fixture being the penultimate game in the season and against a certain Rafa Benitez, the Reds could find themselves under immense pressure.

As we have seen earlier this season already, they could crumble to an uninspiring performance.

Between The Lines: Pellegrini shows faith in Rice

[ad_pod ]

20-year-old West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice recently pledged his international future to England, despite having previously represented the Republic of Ireland in three friendly matches, as reported by the BBC.

Born in London – but eligible for Ireland due to having Irish grandparents – the young defensive midfielder will now be determined to justify his decision by breaking into Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions setup.

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini certainly believes that Rice ought to be in the England manager’s plans.

What he said

As quoted by the club’s official website, the Irons’ Chilean coach said that Rice “is ready to play for England. We are just starting the development of him as a player. But at this moment his performances are better than every holding midfielder.”

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

The 65-year-old former Manchester City boss clarified his final point, saying “I am talking about the English players.” He clearly believes that the West Ham academy graduate is destined for big things though, adding: “we are just starting to see what will be with Declan in the future.”

A dangerous game

Pellegrini has demonstrated a huge amount of faith in Rice with these comments. Such praise is not unwarranted either – the youngster has been a revelation this season at the London Stadium, making himself one of the east London club’s most important players.

However, the manager has also taken a risk with this statement. Whilst Rice may well get a confidence boost from his words, they also apply additional pressure. Calling him one of the best in the country will raise the expectation levels that people have of Rice, which could ultimately have a negative impact on his development.

As a young player, it would be perfectly normal for the midfielder to show some inconsistency or suffer fluctuations in form. Following Pellegrini’s words, if this now happens to Rice he may be more harshly judged than he otherwise would be without the additional hype added by his coach.
