Australia surge after Kohli-Rahane special

The centrepiece of day three was a stand of 262 between Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli, which left Steven Smith wondering where his next wicket was coming from and also kept open the prospect of an outright result

Five for the day – ‘Fearless, spectacular Rahane’

For one minute short of four hours, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli made the future of Indian Test cricket look very bright indeed. For the two hours or so either side, the rest of the touring side confirmed why that future is still some way short of being realised.A hot and occasionally hot-tempered third day at the MCG had numerous fluctuations. First Australia prospered with a pair of early wickets to hasty strokes from Cheteshwar Pujara and M Vijay, and later they did so again through Nathan Lyon’s persevering spin and a sharp spell of reverse swing from the admirable Ryan Harris. But its centrepiece was a stand of 262 between Rahane and Kohli, a union that was both substantial enough to leave Steven Smith wondering where his next wicket was coming from but also swift enough to keep open the prospect of an outright result in this match, which India must win to stay in contention for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Rahane set the tone of the partnership, skating past 30 at better than a run a ball to shift momentum away from Australia. Kohli was a little more collected, but carried on beyond the loss of his partner and other members of India’s exceedingly collapsible tail to 169, his highest Test score. It was not until the last over of the day that Kohli fell, his edge clasped by a diving Brad Haddin. The second exceptional Haddin catch of the day contrasted with some rather indifferent fielding by Australia through mid-afternoon, when at least three chances went down. Nathan Lyon missed the gentlest of return catches from Rahane in the final over before the second new ball became due, and after Mitchell Johnson took it an edge from Kohli’s bat was grassed by Shane Watson, diving to his left and into territory commonly reserved for Haddin.Australian frustration with the Rahane-Kohli partnership was illustrated when Johnson fired a return at the stumps and caught Kohli in the lower back – words were exchanged at other times, and any visible acknowledgement of the Indian pair’s hundreds could best be described as low key. They were more generous to Rahane upon his departure, and Kohli was applauded by all sections of the ground as he led the players off at stumps.Pujara had seemed unusually eager to see bat on ball, and from Harris’ second ball of the morning he aimed an uncharacteristic cut/glide to a ball he would have often left. The edge was thick and Haddin flew through the air, the milestone dismissal among his more spectacular, atoning for dropping the same batsman the previous evening.Kohli was greeted by some fast stuff from Harris and Mitchell Johnson, but it was Vijay who was struck by the latter on the helmet with a short ball that reared up in defiance of an easy-paced pitch. Vijay shrugged off the blow, though its proximity to the rear of his head and neck made for a queasy replay viewing.Mitchell Johnson apologised to Virat Kohli after striking him with a throw during his follow through•Getty Images

He had played and missed at more than his share of deliveries during another innings of otherwise calm temper, but he became impatient when teased by Watson’s line and medium pace. Aiming a cut shot similar to Pujara’s, he too offered a thick outside edge that this time sailed as far as Shaun Marsh at first slip. This wicket seemed to tilt the morning towards Australia, but Kohli and Rahane responded with a counterattack of considerable verve. Rahane wasted very little time, and after a fortunate first boundary which bisected Haddin and Watson from a Lyon away-drifter, he struck a quartet far more convincing to help raise a 50-stand in as many minutes. They went on with it in the afternoon, mixing some handsome and inventive strokes with eager running between the wickets and manipulation of Smith’s fields. The certainty with which Rahane and Kohli played seemed to work against Australian concentration, so when chances arrived they were not quite sharp enough to take them.Lyon in particular will wonder for a long time how he managed to hash Rahane’s bunted return catch: in the 80th over of the innings it would have been a pivotal blow. But the miss allowed the stand to go on past tea, and to a point where India began to ponder a first-innings lead.Ultimately it was Lyon who broke the stand, winning an lbw verdict from Kumar Dharmasena against a sweeping Rahane, though replays suggested the ball had not straightened enough to flick off stump. Having waited so long for his debut innings, KL Rahul’s stay was short but action-filled as he was dropped by substitute Peter Siddle when he tried to flick Lyon over midwicket, then held at short fine leg when trying an ambitious sweep next ball.Harris gained some sharp bend and proved too good for both Dhoni and R Ashwin, before a somewhat off-key Johnson tempted Kohli into error in the day’s final over. With Rahane, Kohli had made this India’s day, but the less flattering passages either side of their stand meant the match may still lean towards Australia.

Teams seek ODI lift in dark 2014

The upcoming series will offer the two bottom-placed ODI teams a chance to improve their record in a format that has yielded mostly poor results in 2014

Bangladesh eager to build on 3-0 sweep

Match factsNov 21, 2014
Start time 13:30 local (07:30 GMT)Big pictureThe form guide below says it all. Bangladesh have lost their last five ODIs, going back to their series against India and West Indies back in August. Zimbabwe have won just one out of their last five – the famous victory against Australia in the tri-series in Harare. But since then, Bangladesh have whitewashed Zimbabwe 3-0 in the Test series, and the visitors’ confidence has taken a hit. Going into the ODI series on Friday, it will be the year’s least successful ODI team, Bangladesh, who will have the upper-hand for a change. Bangladesh were reeling coming into the Tests, but wins in Dhaka, Khulna and Chittagong – the last two of which were resounding – have given them a huge lift.Bangladesh are currently ninth in the ODI rankings, 11 points ahead of Zimbabwe, and the only scenario in which the visitors can overtake them is if they complete an unlikely 5-0 whitewash in the series.Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah led by example the past few weeks, while Mominul Haque has continued to be consistent. Jubair Hossain showed glimpses of his legspin, which could secure his place in the team.It will also be a new beginning for Mushfiqur Rahim the player, after being sacked as captain for this series. Imrul Kayes is likely to play, which would put the onus on Anamul Haque to score heavily as the opener, or the team management may look to tighten the top-order.Zimbabwe, on the other hand, will be relying heavily on Hamilton Masakadza and Sikandar Raza to shoulder most of the responsibility. The pair cannot afford to throw away good starts, while Brendan Taylor will be expected to hit back with runs after a poor year in this format. Regis Chakabva will also be needed to carry over his good form from the Tests. On the bowling front, Bangladesh look to be the stronger side with Shakib, Arafat Sunny and Jubair forming the spin attack, with Mashrafe leading a four-pronged pace attack. Zimbabwe, in contrast, have a young attack led by Tinashe Panyangara. John Nyumbu had a decent outing in the tri-series with six wickets at 31.50, and Zimbabwe will hope he builds on that. The visitors will certainly miss Prosper Utseya in the ODI series.Form guide
(last five completed games, most recent first)
Bangladesh LLLLL
Zimbabwe LWLLLIn the spotlightMashrafe Mortaza is about to make his third coming as Bangladesh captain after his first two appointments ended in injuries. He will have to look after his team as well as himself, as he has been injured several times in the past. A fine one-day bowler, Mashrafe will be key with the ball if there is dew in the evening. One of Zimbabwe’s few positives on this tour so far has been Sikandar Raza, who made three half-centuries and in the Chittagong Test looked to dominate the Bangladesh attack. He has had an above-average 2014 so far, and Zimbabwe would be banking on him to continue this good form.Team newsThe uncapped and Jubair Hossain is likely to miss out if Bangladesh persist with three seamers. With Shafiul Islam being a late addition, he is more likely to play than Rubel Hossain. Imrul Kayes will possibly bat at No. 3 or Sabbir Rahman will get a berth lower down the order to make his ODI debut.Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Anamul Haque, 3 Imrul Kayes/Sabbir Rahman, 4 Mominul Haque, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Mahmudullah, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Arafat Sunny, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Al-Amin HossainZimbabwe will no doubt be making plenty of changes from the last time they played an ODI, in September. Their top four, however, is likely to remain intact. Regis Chakabva’s good form will keep him in the line-up, while Timycen Maruma’s fifty in the practice game could push his case ahead of others.Zimbabwe (possible): 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Sikandar Raza, 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Brendan Taylor (wk), 5 Regis Chakabva, 6 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 7 Timycen Maruma, 8 Tafadzwa Kamungozi, 9 Neville Madziva, 10 Shingi Masakadza/Solomon Mire, 11 John NyumbuPitch and conditionsOne-day wickets in Chittagong offer very little early in the day, so teams winning the toss would prefer to bat first. Later in the evening and with winter setting in, dew could become a factor even in November.Stats and trivia Zimbabwe won the last ODI series between the two sides 2-1. Overall, Bangladesh have won 7 out of 13 bilateral ODI series between the two sides. Shakib Al Hasan (3,835) and Tamim Iqbal (3,824) are in a race to reach 4,000 ODI runs. They are 165 and 176 runs away from the milestone. Sean Williams and Elton Chigumbura have played most ODIs for Zimbabwe this year (11), but Williams is not in the ODI squad.Quotes”We will try to prepare the wickets that will help us win games first, and then think about the World Cup as well.””They [Bangladesh] played better than us [in the Test series] so now it is water under the bridge; it’s a new chapter going to the one day series.”

Amla century steers South Africa to big win

Hashim Amla’s 15th ODI hundred, his third against Zimbabwe and his fourth in six matches, led South Africa through a speedy start, sedate middle and ultimately to a sparkling finish, as the visitors took the series lead in Bulawayo

The Report by Firdose Moonda17-Aug-2014

Hashim Amla’s 15th ODI hundred, his third against Zimbabwe and his fourth in six matches, led South Africa through a speedy start, sedate middle and ultimately to a sparkling finish, as the visitors took the series lead in Bulawayo.Amla shared century stands with Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis, who both brought up fifties, as South Africa posted a towering 309 which Zimbabwe never realistically looked like reaching.Although the margin of defeat suggests Zimbabwe’s downfall was with the bat, they acquitted themselves fairly well against an attack mostly made up of South Africa’s reserves. It was with the ball, however, that they lost the game. With three rookies in their ranks, Zimbabwe’s pack lacked the pace to inject life into a slow wicket, and received no assistance from the healthy cloud covering in the morning. They could also not take proper advantage of the significant spin on offer. As a result, when the first signs of turn were evident in the 14th over, Zimbabwe had already failed to rein South Africa in. De Kock pounced on anything short and wide to score 42 of the 46 runs during a five-over period in which South Africa’s intent to stamp their authority was made clear.Teenager Luke Jongwe and the spin duo of Prosper Utseya and Williams pulled South Africa back and slowed de Kock down, even though his half-century came off 42 balls. John Nyumbu prevented de Kock from keeping his 100% conversion record when he offered flight and de Kock attempted to clear the offside field but found only Brendan Taylor at backward point. With de Kock’s dismissal, Zimbabwe enforced more of a stranglehold. Amla and Faf du Plessis, batting in the No.3 spot left vacant by Jacques Kallis, managed only 58 runs, without a single boundary in the 14 overs that followed the opening stand . Zimbabwe could have eventually claimed Amla’s wicket as a trophy for their efforts, but Shingi Masakadza put him down on 62 in his follow-through.It took South Africa until the final over of the power-play to reignite their run-scoring flame. Du Plessis took four boundaries off Jongwe, a slap through mid-wicket, a fortuitous edge, a loft over the covers and a drive through them – to push South Africa over the 200-run mark and help himself to a half-century off 69 balls. With 10 overs left to go, South Africa’s launched a final fifth assault which saw them plunder 101 runs to lift their run-rate above six. Amla was the main protagonist after du Plessis mistimed a shot he was aiming to hit over the legside, only to be caught at cover.Although de Villiers caught the eye with a pair of inventive reverse-slog sixes, Amla was still the one holding the innings together, as he brought up his century and finished off with his own couple of big hits over long-on and sweeper cover.Nyumbu, Shingi and Jongwe all lacked the control needed to avoid erring on a surface where the margins of mistake were small. Their lines and lengths did not challenge enough, and they were given a lesson in how they should have bowled by Kyle Abbott and Ryan McLaren. Abbott found movement and bounce, but he also kept it tight on off stump or banged it in short and threateningly, while McLaren was equally impeccable in his disciplines.Abbott went unrewarded, but his stranglehold helped seduce Vusi Sibanda into greeting a teasing line and length with an open-faced edge. McLaren had Richmond Mutumbami caught behind off a short ball, and when Taylor stepped out to chip Aaron Phangiso over cover, he was caught at long-on by David Miller instead. Zimbabwe were 34 for 3 and looked likely to collapse, but Hamilton Masakadza and Sean Williams held the hosts together.Their fifth-wicket stand began watchfully, but also had its nervous moments, especially when Hamilton edged Imran Tahir into the vacant area at second slip. The batsman, however, grew into confidence with a number of sweeps and cleverly-taken singles. Tahir was Zimbabwe’s main target as the spinner struggled to get back into the form he previously had shown, and offered too many full tosses.Hamilton scored his third consecutive half-century and seemed well set to turn it into something more substantial. He paddled and pulled Parnell in the second over of his second spell, but just as the stand reached 100, he cut one straight to du Plessis at point. Williams was also out immediately after a milestone. He swatted Tahir through mid-off for his fifty but then played almost the same shot Hamilton previously did.Zimbabwe’s middle and lower order clung on through their new captain Elton Chigumbura, but they may only take a sliver of solace from their fight. Chigumbura limped through his innings with what seemed an injured quad and he also did not bowl, casting a question mark over his availability for the rest of the series. He was the last man out when he hit straight to mid-on to give Phangiso a third wicket. With Tahir picking up as many scalps, the healthy competition South Africa’s have for places in their XI will mean as much to them as the win.

The Madras High Court has restrained Zee Media Corporation Limited, an Indian television conglomerate, and News Nation Network Private Limited, another private television news channel, from airing any interviews or news related to fixing allegations against MS Dhoni. The interim order was passed on Tuesday after the India captain sought Rs 100 crore from four respondents, including police officer G Sampath Kumar, as damages for tarnishing his image. In his affidavit to the court, Dhoni stated his hard-earned reputation was at risk from unverified reports. Dhoni had earlier issued notices to ZMCL, Zee News editor and business head Sudhir Chaudhary, Kumar and News Nation. Justice S Tamilvanan, in his interim order, stated, “I am of the view that there is a prima facie case and the balance of convenience is also in favour of the plaintiff. Hence, interim injunction granted for a period of two weeks,” the judge said in his order after perusing Dhoni’s affidavit.*In his affidavit, Dhoni, represented by the firm of BCCI lawyer PR Raman, accused all four respondents of intentionally projecting Dhoni as an object of hate and ridicule, thereby maligning his image in the eyes of cricket lovers, especially fans of Chennai Super Kings. This is the first time Dhoni, albeit through his lawyers, has reacted in any manner to the IPL scandal. He had been silent at the time, even after the arrest of Super Kings official and the BCCI president N Srinivasan¹s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. The reports surfaced following the submission of a sealed envelope – said to contain names of high-profile players allegedly involved in corrupt practices – to the Supreme Court by the Justice Mukul Mudgal committee investigating the IPL fixing case. Kumar, who had deposed before the Mudgal committee, had alleged in an interview to various news channels that Dhoni’s name had been mentioned by an alleged bookie during interrogation with regard to fixing the game between Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals on May 12, 2013. The charge sheet filed by the Mumbai Police against Meiyappan and 21 others also mentioned that fixing allegations had surfaced about the same match. While establishing Meiyappan as a CSK official, the Mudgal committee in its report last month noted that Dhoni, along with Srinivasan and officials of India Cements took the stand that “Mr Meiyappan, had nothing to do with the cricketing affairs of Super Kings and was a mere cricket enthusiast supporting CSK”.* – March 18, 2014, 1615 GMT – story was updated with the interim injunction

Morkel content with supporting role

Though the Wanderer’s pitch is expected to favour Morne Morkel’s style of bowling, the quick is comfortable playing second fiddle to Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander

Cheteshwar Pujara didn’t have to think too hard when asked who the fastest bowler he has ever faced is. Morne Morkel. The answer may come as a surprise, especially since Pujara, who has recently played against the likes of Dale Steyn and Tino Best*. But Pujara was adamant. Morkel was the quickest.South Africa’s management team would be pleased. For months, they have been saying the same thing. Morkel has got the speed gun more excited than Steyn, and has softened batsmen up more than Vernon Philander but just hasn’t recorded the same results. Luckily for them, Morkel is completely comfortable playing a supporting role.”My partnership with Dale is long gone. Vernon and Dale are the new guys and I’ve made peace with that. I am not going to wear the yellow jersey anymore,” Morkel said, referring to what a cyclist dons when he is the stage leader in a race. “Those guys have been unbelievable for the team.”Between them, Steyn and Philander have taken 69 wickets in Tests this year. Steyn’s 41 have come at an average of 14.36 while Philander’s 28 average 16.35. Contrastingly, Morkel has managed only 13 wickets at 30.69, but he has played as important a role as the other two.Morkel’s job is a balance between pressing home any advantage Steyn and Philander give South Africa, while buttering batsmen up for a fresh assault from the opening pair. With the bounce he generates, he has to ensure the batsmen can never settle and has also been tasked with keeping run-scoring to a minimum, as he did in the Abu Dhabi Test against Pakistan. When neither Steyn nor Philander could break through, Morkel simply held his end. He was South Africa’s most economical bowler, costing them only 1.52 runs an over, and even though they lost that match, Morkel’s ability to contain was a positive.Traditionally, Morkel does not so much frustrate as cause fear. He applies the basting – short of length balls which keep batsmen on the back foot and bouncers directed at the body – so someone else can do the roasting. Despite the Wanderers surface likely to offer more for Morkel than some of the other bowlers, he sees himself playing a similar role.”When I come to the Wanderers, I bowl for one dismissal – for the caught behind because I get so much bounce,” he said. Morkel has taken 15 of his 177 wickets at the ground, with a best of 4 for 59 against England three years ago, which may be why he doesn’t see it as his favourite hunting ground. “The most important thing for me is to stick to my strengths. It’s always been bouncy and quick here and the margins are a little bit smaller. It will be crucial that we do not get carried away.”0:00

Have game plans for each batsman – Morkel

While conditions will suit the seamers more than in other places, Morkel is still well aware that batsmen have also enjoyed playing at the Wanderers. The ball comes onto the bat quicker, aiding stroke-making, while altitude and a fast outfield allow the ball to travel faster once hit.For Morkel, that means there’s a distinct possibility of a high-scoring game, especially because of the mindset of the Indian players, which he described as “very attacking.” He identified the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and R Ashwin as batsmen who would take the fight to South Africa and wants his team-mates to start well to blunt the Indian line-up’s intent.”Where we have been guilty of late is that we start a little bit slowly, like in Abu Dhabi,” he said. South Africa went 1-0 down in the series before surging back to square it in Dubai. Morkel does not want to see a lapse like that ahead of a home summer that culminates with three Tests against a much-improved Australia. “For us it’s key to take momentum and get overs in our feet. It’s going to be important to get used to bowling long spells again and playing competitive cricket.”Despite India’s build-up – a 2-0 thrashing in the ODI series and a washed-out tour game to deprive them of any red-ball match practice – this series still pits the top-ranked Test team against the second-placed one and they are expected to be well matched. The central battle lines have been drawn between South Africa’s bowlers and India’s batsmen with conditions expected to favour the former and challenge the latter.Morkel doesn’t think it’s that simple, which is why he wants to slip back to basics and his supporting actor role to play his part in the contest. “It doesnt matter who you play against or where, the top of off stump and the odd bouncer is a winning combination,” he said. And that’s what he will be doing.*December 16 4:30 pm GMT This article had incorrectly stated that Pujara faced Mitchell Johnson in the recent ODI series between Australia and India

Algoz do Corinthians, Diogo Mateus vem liderando estatísticas no Paulistão
