"For me, this specific year has been a stark reminder that we still have a long journey ahead to eliminate bigotry from sports and society," he wrote. "I believe that anti-racism education must be at the heart of our efforts to advance equality and human rights everywhere. That’s why I’m very happy to announce my new role as United Nations #HumanRights Champion. A role that I’ll take on with pride, excitement and responsibility. Let's make sports a true model of inclusivity, free of racism & discrimination. It's our moment to stand united."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vinicius has been the victim of racist abuse during matches many times since joining Real Madrid. He has spoken out about the issue on social media, even going head-to-head with La Liga president Javier Tebas on one occasion. Vinicius said that La Liga "belongs to racist", sparking some pushback from Tebas. The Madrid hero said in October that he is going to continue his fight to end racism in Spain, saying: "I know that I can change some things. So that those who come in the next few years do not go through this, so that children can have peace of mind in the future. For them I will do everything I can."

Willian, David Luiz and 10 Premier League stars out of contract at the end of June

Clubs in the English top flight have until June 23 to tie down players to short-term deals if they want to finish the 2019-20 season

The coronavirus pandemic threw football into chaos this year.

While the Premier League season has now resumed, clubs and players alike face an uncertain future.

The financial ramifications of the disruption are yet to be truly seen but, in the short term, players up and down the country find themselves with decisions to make.

Most player contracts in the Premier League end on June 30 of a given year, but the 2019-20 season is now expected to run until late July. For clubs playing in Europe, fixtures may continue until the end of August.

The Premier League has set a deadline of June 23 for players to agree short-term contract extensions in order to play until the end of the season.

Some have already taken up this option – David Silva at Manchester City and Liverpool’s Adam Lallana among them – but plenty of players are still set to be without a club on July 1.

  • Getty

    Willian – Chelsea

Brazil international Willian has played more than 300 times for Chelsea since joining in 2013, winning two Premier League titles after the Blues hijacked a proposed move to Tottenham.

However, his future has been up in the air for some time now and he has been linked with a number of clubs during the 2019-20 season.

Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked, with the 31-year-old still a useful player for any club looking to add strength in depth.

Barcelona were also rumoured to be considering a move during the January transfer window but for now, he is believed to be open to signing a temporary contract to finish the season with Chelsea.

  • Getty

    Ryan Fraser – Bournemouth

Fraser’s decision not to agree a short-term contract extension has left Bournemouth staring down the barrel of relegation as the final stretch of the season looms.

He notched seven goals and 14 assists in the Premier League last season, though he has scored only once in the current campaign.

The Cherries restart the season in 18th. Simon Francis, Andrew Surman, Artur Boruc and Charlie Daniels have all agreed to short-term deals, but Fraser will depart for free.

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been linked with his signature.

  • Getty Images

    Jan Vertonghen – Tottenham

Contrasting reports around Vertonghen’s immediate future mean it is currently unclear whether or not he will still be a Tottenham player come July 1.

The 33-year-old has been at Spurs since 2012, one of the key figures in their progression under Mauricio Pochettino.

His experience also means he will be a wanted man if he does leave on a free transfer.

Fellow defender Japhet Tanganga, who made his debut earlier this season, is also out of contract but had reportedly been in talks over a new deal before Covid-19 struck.

    David Luiz – Arsenal

Arsenal are looking to reshape their squad on a budget under Mikel Arteta, and it remains to be seen whether Luiz will be part of the rebuild.

He may well have already played his last game for the Gunners, having been sent off in a disaster-class performance against Manchester City in their first game back.

Luiz has shown signs of being keen on another year at the Emirates Stadium but, after an unconvincing season, some fans would doubtless be content to see him go.

The defender’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has said his future will be decided before the June 23 deadline.

TABELA
> Veja classificação e simulador do Brasileirão clicando aqui

BCCI elections postponed until January 2015

The BCCI’s annual elections have been postponed until January 31, 2015 following a directive from the Supreme Court

Ugra: Srinivasan defence all about holding on to BCCI post

The BCCI’s annual elections have been postponed to a date not later than January 31, 2015 following a directive from the Supreme Court. The elections were due to be held on December 17, but the BCCI told the court that the elections could not be held until the hearings in the IPL 2013 corruption case were completed. This is the third time the BCCI elections, originally scheduled to be held before September 30, 2014, have been postponed as there has not been a final decision on the IPL corruption case over the involvement of sidelined BCCI president N Srinivasan.A two-man bench of the Supreme Court consisting of Justice TS Thakur and FM Kalifullah heard the arguments from counsel representing Srinivasan, BCCI, India Cements Ltd, former Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra on Wednesday. Given that there are arguments to be made by counsel for IPL COO Sundar Raman as well as the litigants Cricket Association of Bihar, along with interventions that have been permitted by the court, there is a very strong possibility the case could extend into the new year. The BCCI pleaded with the court asking what could be done about the elections in the course of extended hearings and asked for an order with regard to the elections. Justice Thakur then asked why, on previous two occasions, the BCCI had taken decisions on its own to postpone the elections, but was now seeking a direction of the court. BCCI counsel CA Sundaram replied that it would be “appropriate” as the Registrar of Societies had been given information the last time the elections had been postponed. As part of his arguments in court today, Srinivasan’s counsel Kapil Sibal gave an undertaking, on behalf of his client, that if he were elected president, “till the (proposed) committee suggests the procedure to deal with the issue of conflict of interest, he will not attend any IPL governing council meeting or any other IPL related discussion in any meeting of working committee or general body meeting of the BCCI.”The undertaking handed over to the court also said that the Court’s proposed two-member high-powered committee could “suggest sanctions to be imposed, in accordance with applicable IPL rules, on person prima facie found to be involved in the act of betting by the Mudgal panel, besides determining the liability of the franchisees.” The “suggestion” refers to the fact that the committee’s conclusions would not be binding on the BCCI.N Srinivasan’s counsel said the sidelined BCCI president was ready to give an undertaking, that were he to be elected president, he would not attend BCCI working committee meetings or IPL governing council meetings•AFP

The BCCI also raised its objections to the court’s suggestion of a high-powered committee, comprising two former judges independent of the board, to take a decision and also mete out a penalty on the conflict of interest issues around Srinivasan, his son-in-law Gurunath and the Super Kings franchise. The BCCI argued that the panel would “challenge” the board’s “autonomy”, as a private body, governed by the Societies Registration Act. The BCCI, Sundaram said, did not want an “external agency” to set its rules. Like in Srinivasan’s argument, the board wanted the findings of the high-powered committee to be “suggestions” and “not be binding on the BCCI.” The court did not agree with this argument, saying that the BCCI had taken no action on its own and stated that the two judges’ decisions could work to “strengthen” the rules of the BCCI.In response to the fact that the BCCI was a private body, the bench made a precise observation of the current status of the BCCI. The BCCI counsel were asked if the board could whether any other Board could call the team selected by them, ‘Team India?’ The court said the BCCI had “de facto and de jure monopoly.””If you have disqualified any person, can he play in any international cricket conducted by ICC? If you have this kind of all-pervasive control, then you are performing a public duty.”The court told the BCCI that the “entire game of cricket and its edifice will collapse” if the BCCI’s current “arrangement” was “allowed to continue and if people’s confidence in the sport is not restored.” The BCCI was asked, “If you (BCCI) fail in your duty, can’t we get it corrected? If there is some temptation for a thief to enter, why can’t you stop it? Why are you averse to it?”Sundaram argued that the court could intervene when there was a specific case where public confidence had been dented but not make sweeping changes to the BCCI’s private bylaws, to which the bench responded by asking, “So you want us to catch the thief but not plug the scope of future theft?”In arguing India Cements’ case, the company’s counsel Mahesh Jethmalani said that the Super Kings franchise should not be penalised for the actions of Gurunath. Jethmalani said that Gurunath was betting in a “personal capacity” and “from home”. He also said argued that India Cements has 3000 employees and the company could not keep tabs on what each one did at home. Justice Thakur said: “It doesn’t make a difference, betting is betting. You should have ensured you are not surrounded by people who bet.”Siddharth Luthra, counsel for Gurunath said that the court should not “prejudice” Gurunath’s criminal trial in Mumbai with its findings. Gurunath was arrested in Mumbai on May 24, 2013 on charges of cheating, forgery and fraud. When asked repeatedly whether Gurunath was a Super Kings team official, no specific answer was given. Thakur asked him, “Do you want to disclose or not?” to which Luthra said his client had “the right to defence and the right to silence. It is a subject matter of prosecution.” Gurunath had also refused to speak to the Mudgal committee on the same grounds, citing the criminal case pending against him in the Bombay High Court. The hearings for the case will resume on December 15 at 2pm and the court will go into a vacation between December 19 and January 5. Sixteen-and-a-half hours of judicial time have gone into the hearings of this case since the Mudgal committee presented its final report to the Supreme Court in early November.

Jayawardene turns up heat on Cook

A fired-up Mahela Jayawardene shot barbs at England’s tactics at Headingley and questioned their embattled captain’s public comments, after Sri Lanka finished day four with a famous away win in sight. The tour has been hard-fought on both sides, with the reporting of Sachithra Senanayake’s bowling action and the England response to Jos Buttler’s Mankading in the fifth ODI causing the most visible grief in the Sri Lanka camp.Sri Lanka’s bowlers have largely prospered by bowling a fuller length at Headingley, while England’s fast bowlers largely bowled shorter. When asked if Sri Lanka had shown England how to bowl seam at the venue, Jayawardene said his side had conveyed that very notion to England’s batsmen in the middle.”Their idea of hurting us and hitting us on the head probably doesn’t work,” he said. “If you’re getting that good length up front, getting the ball to do a bit and being patient, one way or another, people will nick it. I thought we hung in there. We were disciplined enough. We had to get a few hits on our bodies, but I’m sure tomorrow afternoon we’ll have a good laugh about it.”The fourth day began with England holding the edge but Angelo Mathews’ excellent 160 and an intense four-wicket burst from Dhammika Prasad left the visitors with five wickets to get to complete victory.”England were quite chirpy in the morning, but they quietened up after the first hour or so,” Jayawardene said. “That’s part of the game. We know who is on top and who is not. They were quite chirpy yesterday evening as well, and they probably got quite a few from us when they came to bat. They’ll definitely get some more in the morning as well.”Chirping them is something we had spoken about. We’ve seen that under pressure, they’re not quite up to it. So we’ll definitely look forward to tomorrow. There’s a few young guys to come in and they’ll get some sledging.””I definitely feel for him but it doesn’t help when you have arguments with commentators and past cricketers” – Mahela Jayawardene on Alastair Cook•Getty Images

On the eve of the match, Alastair Cook had said “concerns had been raised” in the England camp when they viewed Senanayake’s action on video – a comment which will not have been taken well by the Sri Lanka team, who have rallied around Senanayake since his being reported. But it was Cook’s comments about his vocal critic Shane Warne, however, that Jayawardene questioned the wisdom of.”I definitely feel for him but it doesn’t help when you have arguments with commentators and past cricketers. That’s something you can’t control. You try and control what’s there for you, which is trying to perform and carry yourself through.”Cook’s unhappy run has continued through the first part of England’s summer, with his place in the Test team beginning to look shaky, let alone his captaincy. He has averaged 19.5 in the current series. Jayawardene said: “I always felt as a captain – before you are captain, you are a player. You need contribute to the team. You have 11 guys and you’re part of that. You can’t think about too many other things.”Sri Lanka have already sewn up the limited-overs series and if they move on to a Test series win on Tuesday, they will have completed an incredible tour. It would also cap off a five-month stretch in which they have won series across all formats in Bangladesh, the Asia Cup and the World T20. Jayawardene suggested the tense nature of the England tour would make a Test win particularly sweet.”As a team this was always going to be a challenging tour for us,” Jayawardene said. “Things have happened, and we were quite comfortable with the way we handled them. At the end of the day our cricket was always going to be looked upon. I think we’ve played it with the right spirit, and played it very fairly.”Even coming into the Test series, we knew we had to brace for some of the backlash – which we did. We held our fort together and came back strongly. A lot of credit to the team, to the management, and to the entire group. It’s been a long season for us. We haven’t stopped since last December. We’ve been playing cricket pretty much on the road, so if we can get an away Test series win, it would be fantastic going back home.”
