The £13.5m addition to kick-start Everton’s dwindling season

Although Roberto Martinez’s outfit Toffees outfit weren’t quite expected to set the Premier League alight in triumphant style this season, Everton have nonetheless proven somewhat of a disappointment throughout the campaign so far.

The team currently reside in the bottom half of the table without any signs of immediate improvement. Roberto Martinez’s starting XI looks partially void of ideas and creativity, and with the likes of Leicester City, West Ham and Southampton maintaining a strong presence in the top half of the table it remains hard to envisage just where Everton will end up this season.

However, in light of the recent capture of Oumar Niasse this January, the Toffees find themselves with a potential light at the end of the tunnel.

[ffc-gal cat=”everton” no=”5″]

The Senegalese international arrives on the back of some fine goal-scoring form with Lokomotiv Moscow, so could he eventually prove to be the man to restore some much needed positivity at Goodison Park this term.

Well, if the 25-year-old’s most recent performances with his now former employees are to offer anything to go, it seems Everton could have landed a real gem on their hands in the shape of Niasse, despite his sizeable £13.5million transfer fee.

When it comes to taking on defenders with relative ease in and around the opposition’s penalty box, displaying an impressive range of finishing in one-on-one situations, and simply spinning his counterparts inside the final third with effective turn of pace, this is a player who has certainly failed to disappoint throughout the 2015/16 campaign thus far.

Oumar Niasse seems to like taking on a somewhat daring approach whenever offered the chance to impress in front of his respective fan-base. The 25-year-old striker clearly knows how to find the back of the net in explosive style. But what is perhaps more significant about Niasse’s overall game in general is the fact that he rarely looks short of confidence when played through in front of goal, and seemingly isn’t scared of taking on the impossible either.

Everton therefore look to have found themselves on the end of a very promising January deal. The Goodison Park faithful have arguably been crying out for a fresh new striker to come in and do the business at their club for quite some time now, for although Romelu Lukaku has admittedly been in fine form this season, the Toffees simply can’t rely upon the big Belgian striker alone to make things happen inside the final third for their side.

WANT MORE? >> Everton transfer news | Latest transfer news

The recently acquired Senegalese international would theoretically provide Lukaku with the perfect strike-partner to work alongside in the forward department for Everton this season.

Niasse seems capable of reading all the knock-downs that will likely come his way at Goodison Park, his pace and power inside the final third could create a lot more room for Lukaku to weave his magic in front of goal, and although both players won’t necessarily start up top in every single starting XI put together by Roberto Martinez this season, the potential on offer between Niasse and Lukaku really could open some significant doors for Everton.

So although Oumar Niasse probably won’t go down as the signing of the season, Everton look to have improved upon their fortunes across the rest of the upcoming campaign with the 25-year-old Senegalese star.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Vinicius has been the victim of racist abuse during matches many times since joining Real Madrid. He has spoken out about the issue on social media, even going head-to-head with La Liga president Javier Tebas on one occasion. Vinicius said that La Liga "belongs to racist", sparking some pushback from Tebas. The Madrid hero said in October that he is going to continue his fight to end racism in Spain, saying: "I know that I can change some things. So that those who come in the next few years do not go through this, so that children can have peace of mind in the future. For them I will do everything I can."

Willian, David Luiz and 10 Premier League stars out of contract at the end of June

Clubs in the English top flight have until June 23 to tie down players to short-term deals if they want to finish the 2019-20 season

The coronavirus pandemic threw football into chaos this year.

While the Premier League season has now resumed, clubs and players alike face an uncertain future.

The financial ramifications of the disruption are yet to be truly seen but, in the short term, players up and down the country find themselves with decisions to make.

Most player contracts in the Premier League end on June 30 of a given year, but the 2019-20 season is now expected to run until late July. For clubs playing in Europe, fixtures may continue until the end of August.

The Premier League has set a deadline of June 23 for players to agree short-term contract extensions in order to play until the end of the season.

Some have already taken up this option – David Silva at Manchester City and Liverpool’s Adam Lallana among them – but plenty of players are still set to be without a club on July 1.

  • Getty

    Willian – Chelsea

Brazil international Willian has played more than 300 times for Chelsea since joining in 2013, winning two Premier League titles after the Blues hijacked a proposed move to Tottenham.

However, his future has been up in the air for some time now and he has been linked with a number of clubs during the 2019-20 season.

Manchester United and Arsenal have both been linked, with the 31-year-old still a useful player for any club looking to add strength in depth.

Barcelona were also rumoured to be considering a move during the January transfer window but for now, he is believed to be open to signing a temporary contract to finish the season with Chelsea.

  • Getty

    Ryan Fraser – Bournemouth

Fraser’s decision not to agree a short-term contract extension has left Bournemouth staring down the barrel of relegation as the final stretch of the season looms.

He notched seven goals and 14 assists in the Premier League last season, though he has scored only once in the current campaign.

The Cherries restart the season in 18th. Simon Francis, Andrew Surman, Artur Boruc and Charlie Daniels have all agreed to short-term deals, but Fraser will depart for free.

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been linked with his signature.

  • Getty Images

    Jan Vertonghen – Tottenham

Contrasting reports around Vertonghen’s immediate future mean it is currently unclear whether or not he will still be a Tottenham player come July 1.

The 33-year-old has been at Spurs since 2012, one of the key figures in their progression under Mauricio Pochettino.

His experience also means he will be a wanted man if he does leave on a free transfer.

Fellow defender Japhet Tanganga, who made his debut earlier this season, is also out of contract but had reportedly been in talks over a new deal before Covid-19 struck.

    David Luiz – Arsenal

Arsenal are looking to reshape their squad on a budget under Mikel Arteta, and it remains to be seen whether Luiz will be part of the rebuild.

He may well have already played his last game for the Gunners, having been sent off in a disaster-class performance against Manchester City in their first game back.

Luiz has shown signs of being keen on another year at the Emirates Stadium but, after an unconvincing season, some fans would doubtless be content to see him go.

The defender’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, has said his future will be decided before the June 23 deadline.

Big names key in high-stakes contest

One point separates Sunrisers Hyderabad from Royal Challengers Bangalore, and while defeat will not rule out either side’s progress into the playoffs, it will certainly complicate it

O’Brien: Sunrisers should consider Milind for Ishant

Big pictureOne point separates Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore, who both occupy the middle portion of an exceedingly amorphous table, and who both have two games left to play. Neither absolutely win two out of two to reach the playoffs, but life will become rather more complicated for the team that loses their meeting on Friday.Going by form, this is a hard-to-predict clash that promises excitement. Sunrisers are on a three-match winning streak, and Royal Challengers have won five of their last seven completed games. On paper, Royal Challengers possess the better of two menacing top orders and Sunrisers the better of two mediocre middle orders, and while Mitchell Starc is form bowler of the IPL and the most obvious wicket-taking threat from either side, Sunrisers perhaps possess the deeper bowling attack with more experience of the conditions in Hyderabad. Both teams prefer batting first.Given the stage of the season, the result of the game may well hinge on the bigger names. In a match full of them, who will step up and make the decisive intervention?Form guideSunrisers Hyderabad WWWLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Royal Challengers Bangalore LWWLWWatch out forThe last three times Royal Challengers have batted first, they’ve posted totals of 200, 226 and 235. They’ve not been nearly as dangerous while chasing, though. They’ve lost two of their last three games while batting second, and the other one – a rain-shortened game against Kolkata Knight Riders – could have gone either way. Sunrisers, meanwhile, have batted first in their last three matches and won all of them, but have only won one match out of five while chasing. The toss, therefore, might play a vital role.Bangalore’s struggles while chasing have coincided with their top three getting out relatively early. The new-ball contest that pits Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Trent Boult/Dale Steyn against Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli could prove an important sub-plot in the narrative of the game.Stats and trivia Chris Gayle needs 13 runs to get to 400 runs for the season. If he does so, Royal Challengers will have three batsmen – AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli are the others – in the 400 club. At this point, no other team has more than one representative. Moises Henriques tops Sunrisers’ batting averages – with 219 runs at 43.80 – and also has their best economy rate – 6.57 – among bowlers who have sent down more than 10 overs.

Corbett set to become new MCC chairman

Gerald Corbett, a cricket enthusiast and high-powered businessman, will be the next chairman of MCC, subject to approval by club members at the annual general meeting on May 6.He faces the challenging task of repairing relationships between the MCC committee and members after a prolonged dispute over rebuilding plans for Lord’s. His first month in office next October will will coincide with the rebuilding of the Warner Stand, the first of several redevelopment projects.Corbett, who will succeed Oliver Stocken on October 1, and who has been an MCC Member since 1995, certainly has a penchant for business. He has served on the board of twelve different public companies, six of them as chairman. The group was supported in the final interviews by MCC president David Morgan. Spencer Stuart, an executive search consulting firm, also assisted in the shortlist. With so many chairmanships behind him, he was not overly difficult to find.Morgan said: “Mr Corbett emerged as the unanimous choice to succeed Oliver Stocken. All the experience I have I will bring to bear helping it meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.”He becomes the fifth person to hold the unpaid post following its creation in 2000 and can serve a maximum of two three-year periods.

Bravo fined for verbally offending Bangladesh batsmen

Darren Bravo has been found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for verbally offending the opposition batsmen during the fourth and final day’s play in the second Test against Bangladesh

Darren Bravo, the West Indies batsman, has been found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct for verbally offending the opposition batsmen during the fourth and final day’s play in the second Test against Bangladesh in St Lucia.Bravo was found to have breached Article 2.1.8 of the code, which relates to “…Where the facts of the alleged incident are not adequately or clearly covered by any of the above offences, conduct that either : (a) is contrary to the spirit of the game; or (b) brings the game into disrepute.”An ICC release stated that Bravo had been warned on several occasions not to approach and verbally offend the opposition batsmen and repeatedly failed to heed the umpires’ instructions.Bravo disputed the offence and a formal hearing was then conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama, with the charge having initially been brought by on-field umpires Steve Davis, Richard Illingworth, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Peter Nero. Mahanama found Bravo guilty and issued a fine of 30% of his match fee.”The umpires felt that the player’s behaviour brought the game into disrepute and he was reminded of his responsibilities to extend respect at all times to both his opponent and to match officials,” Mahanama said.
