"Could leave Southampton" – Pundit says "exciting" star may exit St Mary’s

Southampton could lose an “exciting young talent” in January, with one Premier League club showing an interest.

Who left Southampton this summer?

The Saints and new manager Russell Martin lost a number of players in the summer, bringing in just under £160m through sales.

Big money was brought in for Romeo Lavia, Tino Livramento, James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Tella, with Mohammed Salisu, Moussa Djenepo and Mislav Orsic also bringing in fees.

The club are currently going through an extremely tricky period back in the Championship following a relatively solid opening few weeks. Three wins from the opening four games gave plenty of belief around St Mary’s, however, the Saints have now lost their last four, leaving them in 15th place.

One player who began the campaign as a regular was Carlos Alcaraz, starting three of the first four, but he has been limited to appearances from the bench in recent weeks and was an unused substitute last time out against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Reports in recent days have suggested that Newcastle United made an enquiry for the Argentine in the summer and are keeping tabs on his situation ahead of the January window.

BBC pundit Carlton Palmer, talking to Football League World, addressed the rumours regarding Alcaraz and Newcastle, suggesting he could leave Southampton in the New Year.

"Newcastle United have made an enquiry about Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz in the summer transfer window and have continued to keep tabs on the player.

"(Eddie) Howe is keen to add to his squad in the January transfer window as they're in four competitions and there's a lot of games ahead of them.

"Alcaraz could leave Southampton in the January transfer window – certainly in the summer – if Southampton are not promoted and he's not getting game time.

"Alcaraz scored four goals in 18 Premier League games last season after his £12m move from Racing Club, he's certainly an exciting young talent and he's got a lot of praise from former-managers, one being Harry Redknapp – who knows a player or two – who said 'he's got a really bright future ahead of him'".

Southampton's Carlos Alcaraz.

How good is Southampton’s Carlos Alcaraz?

Alcaraz, a central midfielder who can also play out wide if needed, appears to be a player who could make a big impact in the Championship. Over the past 12 months, as per FBref, Alcaraz has ranked in the top 1% for midfielders when it comes to shot-creating actions, xG, total shot and successful take-ons.

He’s also ranked highly for key passes, passes into the area and progressive passes, showing how he can make an impact on the ball, with plenty of the data recorded during last season's Premier League campaign.

Therefore, statistically, it isn’t a surprise that a team like Newcastle appear to see plenty of potential in the 20-year-old, so a move to St James’ Park from St Mary’s could be one to keep an eye on over the coming months, and it'll be interesting to see if he soon returns to Martin's starting XI.

West Ham: Man City could now attempt to steal "superstar" from Moyes

West Ham United face a transfer worry as European champions Man City could now plot to steal away a "superstar" player.

Who has left West Ham?

The east Londoners sold former Declan Rice to Arsenal for around £105 million in the summer transfer window, and he was joined by Gianluca Scamacca, Nikola Vlasic and Arthur Masuaku.

West Ham's former quartet left to the tune of £134 million in total, and they were subsequently replaced by Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Mohammed Kudus.

Two of the former, Alvarez and Ward-Prowse, have taken to life excellently at the London Stadium while Mavropanos could in fact make his Claret and Blue debut this weekend after recovering from a back problem.

David Moyes has lead his Hammers side through an absolutely brilliant start to the 2023/2024 Premier League campaign.

David-moyes-transfer-west-ham-united-deadline-day

West Ham have tasted victory in three of their opening four league matches prior to the international break; sealing wins against high-flying Brighton, big-spending Chelsea and newcomers Luton Town.

The Irons remain unbeaten but now face a crunch clash against City on Saturday; a match which will prove their toughest test yet given just how finely Pep Guardiola's side have started.

What's the latest West Ham transfer news?

Indeed, the Blues pose a serious threat to West Ham on the field this weekend and could well end their unbeaten streak.

However, City are now also threatening off the pitch as well, with some news emerging on a West Ham star they're apparently very keen on.

Morocco international defender Nayef Aguerd, who has starred for Moyes in recent months, is apparently turning a few heads at the Etihad Stadium.

Aguerd had attracted late Saudi window interest from Nuno Espirito Santo's Al-Ittihad, according to reports last week, but a move failed to materialise.

The 27-year-old has formed a formidable partnership with Kurt Zouma at the heart of West Ham's back-line, something which hasn't gone unnoticed at City, who "could join the race" to sign Aguerd in January alongside Liverpool.

That is according to journalist Pete O'Rourke, who writes for Football Insider that Moyes' side will demand a "huge" fee to part company with their star defender in the winter window.

How good is Nayef Aguerd?

The African was also a colossal presence for Morocco on their run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals in Qatar last year.

Called a Moroccan "superstar" by members of the press, Aguerd's former teammate Achraf Sidki has also branded him "one of the best defenders in Europe".

"West Ham have signed one of the best defenders in Europe,” Sidki said to The Athletic.

“I’m so proud that one of my former teammates will be playing in the Premier League.

“I’m surprised he didn’t move to England sooner. When we were younger we both had big dreams of becoming professional footballers. Nayef has done well and I’m confident he will be a great signing for West Ham.

“There were so many times he saved the team when we played together. That’s when I realised he was very good. I remember one occasion we played against a team called Tetouan.

“We needed to win and it was probably Nayef’s best game for the club. He was man of the match and after the game, I told him, ‘One day you will make it to the Premier League. You don’t know how good you are’."

Na próxima rodada, o Botafogo-SP visita a Chapecoense, na Arena Condá. O Paraná recebe o Náutico, na Vila Capanema.

O confronto

Nem mesmo o mais otimista torcedor do Botafogo-SP sonhava com um início de jogo tão bom. Aos 3 minutos, no desvio do escanteio, Rafinha só teve o trabalho de completar para dentro do gol, 1 a 0.

O Paraná buscou a reação e teve duas boas chances.

SNGPL reach final after frenetic two-day finish

The quicks picked up each of the 33 wickets that fell to the bowlers, and neither team got past 100 even once, in a match that lasted only four-and-a-half sessions

ScorecardAFP

It took SNGPL less than two days to beat Lahore Blues in Hyderabad, where 34 wickets fell for a total of 321 runs on a greentop where fast bowlers made merry. The quicks picked up each of the 33 wickets that fell to the bowlers, and neither team got past 100 even once. Eventually a target of 68 didn’t quite stretch SNGPL, who got there for the loss of four wickets to pick up nine points, end their Super Eight stage with 21 points, and clinch a place in the tournament final.Sent in to bat, Lahore Blues stumbled to 89 all out in their first innings, with Azizullah picking up his 11th five-wicket haul in 37 matches. Raza Ali Dar, batting at No. 5, made an unbeaten 37 – it would remain the top score in a match where no one else passed 30.By the end of the first day, the Blues were batting again, having sent SNGPL packing for 92, with Aizaz Cheema picking up five wickets and the debutant Ali Mustafa three. Only four SNGPL batsmen got into double figures, the wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan top-scoring with 23.Starting day two on 2 for 0, Lahore Blues collapsed once again. This time their entire innings lasted only 15.1 overs, as Mohammad Abbas tore through their line-up with figures of 6 for 32. SNGPL reached their target in 21.2 overs, with Azhar Ali’s 26, Khurram Shehzad’s 13 and Asad Shafiq’s 10 small but vital contributions in a small chase. Cheema picked up all four wickets, to finish with figures of 9 for 66 in a losing cause. After the match, Azhar tweeted his amazement at what had happened: “Match Finished in 4 and half session [sic.], what a pitch”.

Kingma's hat-trick sets up Netherlands' sweep of Namibia

The seamer’s maiden five-wicket haul in List A cricket knocked over Namibia for 181 and consigned them to the last place in the WCL Championship

The Report by Peter Della Penna in Dubai08-Dec-2017
ScorecardVivian Kingma is never shy about showing his excitement after taking a wicket. Or six. And when that sixth wicket caps off a hat-trick like it did in a five-wicket win against Namibia at the ICC Academy, that unbridled joy gushes out like a geyser.Kingma’s first wicket after Netherlands had sent Namibia in came in the fourth over when Karl Birkenstock, playing his first match of the tournament, spliced a pull to mid-off. The rest of his haul came via bowled, lbw or caught behind the wicket as Kingma swung the ball regularly past the outside edge. By the end of the Powerplay, Kingma had Stephan Baard edging to slip and Craig Williams nicking behind to debutant wicketkeeper Scott Edwards. In the interim between Kingma’s twin three-wicket spells, Gerhard Erasmus made a splendid 81 off 75 balls. Erasmus played the Dutch spinners with ease, casually whipping the left-arm duo of Roelof van der Merwe and Pieter Seelaar against the turn through the leg side. In the 25th, he slogged offspinner O’Dowd into the ICC Academy car park for a massive six.But at the other end, Erasmus struggled to find a willing ally in his effort to repel the Dutch bowling unit. Zane Green tickled an edge off van der Gugten to Edwards before Kotze fell to O’Dowd. Ryan ten Doeschate, bowling his first over for Netherlands since 2011, began with a full toss but four balls later found his radar to get Jan Frylinck wafting outside off for a healthy edge to Edwards to make it 125 for 6.Erasmus brought up a run-a-ball fifty and, with only the tail to provide support, he targetted van der Merwe. He hit four boundaries in the 28th and 30th overs to chase the left-arm spinner out of the attack, perhaps regrettably so as rather than looking at posting another 250-plus total, they collapsed to Kingma.Peter Della Penna

After seeing Erasmus cut him for four in his first over back, Kingma began the 34th with a fuller ball and got the batsman edging a drive behind for his fourth wicket. JJ Smith had his off stump knocked back, driving at a fullish delivery to give Kingma his maiden List A five-for. Desperate to shield the stumps, Bernard Scholtz shuffled across to the hat-trick ball and missed a belated stab. The umpire had raised his finger even before Kingma turned mid-sprint to look back to confirming the landmark.A return catch by van der Merwe a few overs later ended the innings in 36.4 overs, meaning the Dutch had almost an hour to bat before the scheduled lunch break. They reached 60 for 2 in 14.3 overs as Wednesday’s centurion Ben Cooper flashed an edge behind off Williams to trigger the interval. When play resumed, the pitch began to deteriorate markedly. Williams and Sarel Burger each snagged a second wicket within a few overs after the restart while spinner Scholtz bowled Sikander Zulfiqar with a ball that kept low after the batsman had charged down the pitch, leaving the Dutch needing a suddenly tricky looking 77 runs to win.But ten Doeschate calmed the situation with his 11th List A fifty. True to his average of 64.24 in one-day cricket for the Netherlands at the start of play, the allrounder didn’t skip a beat in his first innings back in orange, cruising to an unbeaten 65 off 58 balls. He took his time to settle before sizing up Scholtz’ left-arm spin in the 34th over, pulling for four before consecutive shimmies down the pitch produced sixes over long-on and long-off to end the spinner’s day.A delightful straight drive off Tangeni Lungameni brought up ten Doeschate’s half-century off 46 balls as the Dutch needed 24 to win off the final 12 overs. Having thrown in the towel in the face of ten Doeschate’s demoralising dissection of their attack, Lungameni conceded the winning run with a short ball that was signalled as a wide. The win completed Netherlands’ fourth sweep in seven rounds of the WCL Championship tournament as they ended on 22 points, three points clear of second-placed Scotland. Namibia finished in last place with just three wins from 14 matches, finishing three points behind Nepal to take the wooden spoon.

Amir ruled out of one-day series with shin injury

Pakistan have been dealt a serious short-term blow with Mohammad Amir ruled out of bowling in the ongoing second Test as well as the one-day series against Sri Lanka. Amir picked up a stress-related injury of his right shin and has been advised rest for the next two to three weeks.Amir initially went off the field towards the end of the first evening of the Test, halfway through his 17th over. He was under observation overnight as the management initially said he was suffering from pain in his left shin.He arrived with the team for the second day and came on to bowl in the 11th over of the afternoon. But after struggling through three overs, during which he looked visibly troubled and at one stage required an ice pack, he went off again. This time he was taken for an MRI scan, which revealed the extent of the injury to his right shin. The sequence of events will raise questions about why he wasn’t taken for a scan earlier and why he was allowed to bowl at all on the second day.”The fast bowler has been advised two to three weeks rest after he underwent an MRI scan today following complains of pain in his right shin,” a PCB statement said. “Amir will not bowl in the ongoing Test match at the Dubai Cricket Stadium but would be available to bat.”That leaves Pakistan, already struggling with the ball in this Test, a bowler short going ahead – with only one specialist spinner and with Wahab Riaz enduring his own problems at one stage with his run-up. Their chances of rescuing their unbeaten home record of ten years, and seven in the UAE, stand considerably reduced. It also caps a miserable tour for Amir, who went wicketless in the first Test in Abu Dhabi, and picked up just one in the first innings here. He bowled well in brief patches, though coaching staff were concerned with his inability to find fuller lengths. The impact on Pakistan’s Test side will not be so important beyond this match – Pakistan do not play another Test until May next year when they tour England for a two-Test series. But his absence in the five-match ODI and three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka will be felt.He was their standout bowler in the Champions Trophy final in June against India, a three-wicket burst at the top of the order instrumental in Pakistan’s win. And he has, since his return from a five-year ban, made a substantial contribution to the 50-over side, taking 30 wickets in 21 ODIs.

Man City’s Dream XI As £35m Signing Replaces Riyad Mahrez

It sums up Pep Guardiola's need for perfection that he has looked at a Manchester City side fresh from winning the treble, and decided that improvements are needed.

After waving goodbye to Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez so far this summer, and with Kyle Walker's future also remaining uncertain, the Premier League champions look set to welcome reinforcements this summer.

It won't be difficult to convince players to make the move to The Etihad, either. After all, at this stage, the Manchester club can almost guarantee silverware. They have just been that clinical in recent years.

With that said, we've taken a look at how Manchester City could line up next season, taking a look at four players who could arrive.

CB: Josko Gvardiol

RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Though some doubts were cast by RB Leipzig's director over the completion of the move, Josko Gvardiol could yet become a Manchester City player before the end of the transfer window.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is still on, with a verbal agreement reached, albeit without the completion of a medical as of yet.

City will want to avoid any further complications, and simply get the deal over the line in what will see their backline reach a new and improved level.

RB: Benjamin Pavard

Benjamin Pavard

As already mentioned, Walker's City future remains uncertain. And, according to Romano, if the England international opts to complete a move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich this summer, then Benjamin Pavard will go in the other direction.

A different kind of quality to Walker, Pavard's ability to play as a centre-back as well as a right-back, is certainly an asset that City could use to their advantage next season.

It remains to be seen whether Walker decides to make the move this summer, however.

CM: Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong

Since bidding farewell to Gundogan this summer, City have only welcomed Mateo Kovacic to boost their midfield options, after failing in their pursuit of Declan Rice, who eventually completed a move to Arsenal.

That failure could yet open the door for Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong, however. The Dutchman was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, before the Red Devils secured the signature of Casemiro. And, now, City could be in pole position to make their move.

According to reports in Spain, De Jong could be used in a swap deal with current City midfielder Bernardo Silva, as Barcelona pursue a deal for the Portugal international.

After all that past speculation, if De Jong joined City, it would certainly rub salt into the wounds of those at Old Trafford.

RW: Michael Olise

Crystal Palace midfielder Michael Olise.

Once again potentially proving their ability to replace players with relative ease, City could be set to welcome Crystal Palace's Michael Olise following the departure of Mahrez to Al-Ahl.

According to Romano, Olise has a release clause of around £35m, which would give interested club Manchester City a fairly cheap deal in today's market.

The winger impressed at Selhurst Park last season, scoring twice, and assisting a further 11 goals in the Premier League.

Still only 21, Olise could yet reach several more levels, too.

With that said, here's how Manchester City could line up next season:

Spurs: £13m-rated "weapon" could be surprise name to fill Kane void

While there will be those of a Tottenham Hotspur persuasion still hoping that club-record scorer, Harry Kane will be a part of Ange Postecoglou's side beyond the September deadline, it is looking increasingly likely that the England skipper will be on his way as a matter of when and not if.

Amid reports that chairman Daniel Levy could be forced to cash in on the long-serving striker rather than allow him to leave for nothing next summer, it would appear that the only question now is where the 30-year-old ends up, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United still circling.

If the 6 foot 2 marksman is to depart over the coming weeks then Postecoglou will need to find a new attacking figurehead who can ease the goalscoring burden on Heung-min Son, with there perhaps other members of the current squad who could step up to the plate.

Last year's £60m summer signing, Richarlison did only recently net a hat-trick in the 5-1 thrashing of Lion City Sailors, although it is yet to be seen if the mercurial Brazilian can replicate that form in the Premier League, having scored just a solitary top-flight goal last season.

Tottenham striker Richarlison.

Rather than attempting to rely on the 26-year-old, a possible surprise package may have presented itself in the form of former Fulham loanee, Manor Solomon, with the recent free transfer arrival from Shakhtar Donetsk having made a strong early impression on pre-season.

How good is Manor Solomon?

Described as "really exciting" by Postecoglou, the 24-year-old has also been the recipient of notable praise from journalist Paul Brown, with the respected insider telling Football FanCast that the Israeli international can be something of a "weapon" for the north Londoners next season.

Asked whether the 5 foot 7 ace is a bargain signing, Brown stated: "Yeah, I think he's a really good little player. He, in limited minutes, did really good things for Fulham and scored a lot of goals off the bench for them. I think in a similar role at spurs, he could be quite dynamic.

"I think they do need someone like him who takes up good positions, has that kind of movement. He's quite deceptive with his movement, and just has a knack for goal.

"I think bringing him on against tired defenders at the end at the end of the game would be a good weapon for the new manager to have, so I can see why they did that one."

How has Manor Solomon performed in pre-season?

That glowing praise is a sign of the potential gem that Postecoglou has on his hands, with Solomon having shown glimpses last season while at Craven Cottage that he can offer a real goal threat in his new home at N17.

Manor Solomon

While Richarlison failed to catch fire for the Lilywhites, the Israeli sensation scored four Premier League goals in 2022/23 despite missing the first half of the season through injury, with that impact also coming despite being limited to just four starts in the competition.

Barring another injury setback, the £13m-rated speedster looks likely to have a bigger role to play this time around if his pre-season form is anything to go by, having been hailed as a 'constant threat' on the right flank by football.london's Alasdair Gold following the recent win over Lion City – who also awarded him an 8/10 match rating.

The diminutive, wing wizard had also shone on the opposite side against rivals West Ham United last week, with the Evening Standard's Simon Collings writing that he was 'just about Tottenham’s best player during the first half and looked very lively cutting inside.'

While it remains to be seen which wing the one-time Maccabi Tel Aviv menace will line up on moving forward, such versatility is evidence of just what a 'weapon' he is, hence the excitement over his potential influence in 2023/24.

Although it may be Richarlison who is likely to be the direct, positional replacement for Kane through the middle, Solomon is already showing signs that he can lead the charge from the flanks.

Ranked: Most Embarrassing 1v1 Football Moments

We’ve all been there, haven’t we? You turn up on a Sunday morning, look down, and see the brightest, newest Nike boots worn by a player in far better shape than you, already delivering instructions. It’s at that moment that you should request a substitution, because shortly afterwards you are left gasping for air, bamboozled by the movement of some feet far too quick to keep up with. Defenders in Europe’s top five leagues don’t quite have it that easy, however. They can’t just feign a tight calf and off they go. They have to face the prospect of the highest quality cameras witnessing their downfall in front of millions. When they are left flying to the ground after a few sharp stepovers, it doesn’t end at that very moment. No, it is clipped up, and instructed to follow them everywhere they go, before one day ending up on lists such as this. With that said, after Twitter users revealed what they believe are the most embarrassing one-on-one moments in football history, we, at Football FanCast, have decided to rank them.

5

Jefferson Montero vs Calum Chambers

There are many moments that sum up the latter years of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal side, but it’s hard to think of many more pertinent than this one as Jefferson Montero consistently ran riot up against a helpless Calum Chambers as the Gunners lost 2-1 against Swansea City.

The Swansea winger particularly embarrassed the Arsenal defender when his twists and turns resulted in Chambers losing his footing, signalling ruthless jeers from the Welsh club’s on-watching fans.

4

Mohamed Salah vs Lisandro Martinez

For the first time in a while, it was Manchester United who were the confident side ahead of their game against Liverpool at Anfield, with the focus on just how well Lisandro Martinez had settled in.

Seven. Yes, seven, Liverpool goals later, however, and the Red Devils could only hang their heads in shame after Jurgen Klopp’s side, even in the middle of a poor season, dismantled them once again.

The standout moment came when Mohamed Salah left Martinez literally facing the wrong way and then on the deck, before assisting Cody Gakpo’s second goal of the game.

3

Eden Hazard vs Francis Coquelin

Scoring one of the best goals in Premier League history, Eden Hazard delivered one of the best one-on-one moments that we’ve seen, in the process, leaving Francis Coquelin spinning like a “fidget spinner”, as one fan out it, at Stamford Bridge.

Mercilessly shaking the midfielder off, the Chelsea star went past the rest of the Arsenal defence, before finding the back of the net in vintage Hazard fashion. This was the Belgian at his absolute best.

2

Angel di Maria vs Carlos Puyol

Some say that this is the moment that Carlos Puyol decided it was time to hang up his boots. Angel di Maria simply made his body move in a way that an ageing defender simply should not stretch.

Leaving the legendary centre-back bewildered, Di Maria finished the move off by laying the ball off to a waiting Cristiano Ronaldo to slam home, as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 3-1.

It’s all the more impressive when you remember just how good Puyol was.

1

Lionel Messi vs Jerome Boateng

With apologies to Jerome Boateng, this one was always going to be top. You have to feel for the former Bayern Munich defender, in a way. No matter how iconic his career has been, this is the moment he’ll be remembered for.

Lionel Messi, as he does better than anyone, slipped past Boateng, who lost his footing, before being forced to watch on as the Argentine chipped an on-rushing Manuel Neuer. You’ll simply struggle to find better goals, and a more embarrassing one-on-one.
