Liverpool could replace Jurgen Klopp with manager rated by Pep Guardiola

A crazy release clause reportedly won't put Liverpool off appointing a manager who Pep Guardiola thinks highly of, according to a new report from abroad.

Liverpool manager latest

The news that Jurgen Klopp is leaving his job as Reds boss at the end of the season has rocked the football world, at a time when he was generally expected to at least stay until his contract expiry date of 2026.

The German's exit is going to hit Liverpool hard considering he is one of the most influential people in the club's great history, winning huge trophies while being adored by supporters.

The Reds have to accept that they are going to face life without Klopp later this year, and the importance of nailing his successor cannot be downplayed.

Xabi Alonso has arguably emerged as the favourite to take over in the summer, having been a hugely popular player at Anfield and now shining in management with Bayer Leverkusen.

He certainly won't be the only option to come in, though, with Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann potentially in the running, too. Now, another name has been thrown into the hat, as Liverpool work hard on finding Klopp's replacement.

Liverpool could appoint Ruben Amorim

According to Correio de Manha [via Sport Witness], Liverpool won't be put off by the €20m (£17m) release clause that exists in Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim's deal, seeing him as an option to replace Klopp with. That clause is among the highest in the history of the game, with Graham Potter topping the pile with a €23m (£19.6m) fee prior to joining Chelsea.

Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim

It reportedly "won't be an impediment" for the Reds, with the 39-year-old believed to be "ready for higher goals" in his career. The idea of a move to the Premier League appeals to him.

Amorim is arguably one of Europe's most exciting young managers at the moment, so it is only natural that he is seen as a contender for the Liverpool job. He is someone who is admired by Manchester City boss Guardiola, who has said of him and his Sporting team in the past:

"A year ago we won by five in Lisbon at this stage of the Champions League and they said 'how bad Sporting is'. What a poor team. They had won the league. From my point of view, their coach is one of the best at the moment.

"His team, it was very, very good. Do you know what happened there? Five opportunities, five shots, five goals. It was 100%. How good is the coach, huh?"

Liverpool could sign dream Klopp heir with swoop for "serial winner"

Anfield was rocked by Jurgen Klopp’s announcement that he will leave the club at the end of the season.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 26, 2024

Amorim has built up a winning mentality at Sporting, winning three Portuguese League Cups and one Primeira Liga title, and at just 39, he would represent a long-term appointment.

Ultimately, the decision rests with FSG, and the truth is that whoever comes in is going to have one of the hardest managerial jobs in many years, trying to replace a truly iconic figure in Klopp.

Ravi Bopara stars all-round as Essex thump Hampshire

Bopara scores 89 and takes three wickets as Ryan ten Doeschate chimes in with 89 as well

Ravi Bopara produced an all-round extravaganza to condemn Hampshire to their first defeat in this season’s Royal London One Day Cup while also giving Essex Eagles hope of reaching the knockout stage.Former England star Bopara smashed an almost flawless 89 with the bat before he celebrated figures of 3 for 39 with his medium pacers. Bopara had put on 150 with Ryan ten Doeschate, who also scored 89, to send Essex to a good total of 341 for six.Former Hampshire fast bowler Matt Coles also chipped in with four wickets, a best for Essex, as Hampshire lost wickets at regular intervals, despite Rilee Rossouw’s high quality 93 – with Essex prevailing by 111 runs.Essex, who had only tasted victory once in their opening three fixtures, won the toss and elected to bat on a belting wicket under heavy clouds, having lost the last three matches deciding to bowl first.Debutant Rishi Patel added 60 for the first wicket with Alastair Cook. Patel, who scored a record-equalling five centuries for the Second XI last season, aggressively reached a quick-fire 35 before he and Cook departed within two overs of each other. Cook, who has only managed to average 20 in this format this season, edged Brad Wheal behind, Patel picked out Wheal at long on and then Dan Lawrence was bowled by Liam Dawson.A below-par score looked on for Essex when Tom Westley tickled a delivery that rose on him behind to hand James Fuller his maiden Hampshire wicket – and left the hosts on 147 for 4.But Bopara and ten Doeschate joined together in the 29th over to rebuild and accelerate. Both reached half centuries, Bopara from 57 ball and ten Doeschate off 39 deliveries, including seven boundaries. The century stand came up in 81 balls but Bopara was given a life, the ball after dispatching Kyle Abbott into the River Can, when Mason Crane downed a chance at deep point. The partnership reached 150, an Essex high for the fifth wicket against Hampshire, but without another run being added Bopara departed for 89 when he heaved Abbott to Sam Northeast at deep square leg.Paul Walter arrived at the crease and clobbered a maximum off his first balled faced, before ten Doeschate tanked Fuller over the ropes three balls later. Ten Doeschate fell for 89, having passed 6,000 List A runs, when he was run out by Crane but Walter crashed another six to end on 22 from 14 balls as Essex reached a par 341 for 6.Hampshire’s reply started slowly as they lost both openers and Sam Northeast within the first 13 overs.Peter Siddle had Tom Alsop lbw while swinging across the line before Aiden Markram skied to Jamie Porter at mid-on and ex-Kent skipper Northeast handed keeper Robbie White a steepling catch, the latter two to Coles, leaving Hampshire 37 for 3.Vince and Rossouw guided Hampshire back on track with a 77-run stand for the fourth wicket, but they couldn’t catch up with the required run-rate. Vince, on the back of a career-best 190 against Gloucestershire on Friday, eased through the gears and reached 47 before slog sweeping Lawrence to Walter at cow corner.Dawson fell soon after when he slashed Bopara to point, but Rossouw continued his swashbuckling innings with a six into the pavilion.Rossouw and new man Gareth Berg gave Hampshire hope again with a useful 79-run partnership but the latter steered to short third man before Fuller was bowled by Bopara.Rossouw departed when he chased a ball down leg side to top edge to short leg before the result was secured when Abbott scythed to Porter at third man, for a record-equalling four catches in an innings for an outfielder for Essex, and Wheal was bowled.

Tom Abell shines amid gloom as Kent strive for decisive advantage

Taunton folk have warm hearts. “Hello, my lovely!” says Lucy, joint-owner of Wickets, the finest café on the circuit, as she greets each customer. And next door is The World of Bears, which is not an outlet for merchandise linked to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy but an altogether fluffier enterprise offering visitors “18,000 cuddles”. So let us hope both establishments have a hug ready for Somerset’s skipper, Tom Abell, should he drop in on Monday morning.Abell’s contributions to this game may seem modest but it is not so. By the game’s end he will probably have batted longer (four hours) and made more runs (79) than anyone else. Until Mitch Claydon took three wickets in 19 balls deep in Sunday’s final session, it seemed possible Abell’s 58-run partnership with Steve Davies – their second half-century stand of the match – would ensure Somerset set a formidable target. And even now, all is not settled. George Bartlett and Craig Overton’s unbroken 60-run alliance for the eighth wicket has given the hosts a lead of 133 and Bartlett’s confident cover-drive to Harry Podmore’s last ball of the day symbolised the game’s shifting balance. One doubts Kent will find it easy to chase anything above 150 on the final afternoon.Abell is a lovely bloke and a fine batsman who is young enough to become a much better one if he just concentrates a little more. He captains his team well and scampers after the ball with the enthusiasm of a spaniel in the bracken. His 49 was the highest score in Somerset’s first innings, a feat which hardly ranks with slaying the Stymphalian birds but revealed more application than anyone else displayed. On Sunday morning, Abell watched as his seamers bowled their side back into the match. He took a catch to get rid of the palpably dangerous Matt Renshaw and then early in the afternoon session took the last wicket himself after Kent had chiselled out a modest 38-run lead on first innings.Yet for a few absurd moments in the afternoon session it seemed that 38 might be just about enough to see Kent to victory in their first top division game in nine years. Operating from the River End, Darren Stevens brought one back off the seam to have Marcus Trescothick lbw and next over moved one away enough to take the edge of James Hildreth’s bat. Stevens possesses the craft of the ages but Trescothick’s bat was far from the ball and few home supporters wondered if they heard the sound of the boatman’s oar. Either way, it was the first time a bowler aged over 42 had dismissed a batsman over 43 in a County Championship since John Childs accounted for John Emburey at Chelmsford in 1996.Things got worse for Somerset before their deficit was cleared. Azhar Ali edged a good ball from Podmore to Zak Crawley at third slip and Eddie Byrom fenced fatally at the fourth ball of Matt Milnes’ first over to give a catch behind. Abell was on 8 when that wicket fell and Somerset were -6 for 4. Joined by Davies, a batsman whose totals have not always matched his ability, the captain remained as vigilant as a barn owl in daylight. This will be a low-scoring game, one in which every over has represented a tiny triumph to someone. The pair took their side to tea without further disaster and played a little more expansively on the resumption. The lead grew and some called the situation promising. The temperature rose, too, though it could hardly do otherwise. Encouragements to the Kent bowlers from their colleagues rang out across the County Ground but Davies cover-drove Podmore for two fours and hit him straight for three runs in the 31st over. Riches, indeed. Then five overs later Abell played a mimsy cut to a ball from Claydon he could well have left alone and Ollie Robinson took the catch. Davies and Lewis Gregory soon joined him in the pavilion. We thought Kent might be batting again at a time when some people are attending evensong but Bartlett and Overton resisted and there will be vital decisions for Abell to make tomorrow.Sunday’s late sunlight and balmy air contrasted sharply with the conditions that greeted the players when they had arrived at the ground some nine hours earlier. Yet the morning’s play showed how gloriously absorbing this championship can be. Kent scored 88 runs but lost five prime wickets and the cricket was so well contested it took one’s mind off the cheerless conditions. Late October, you might have said, and a bleak one, had you been standing outside and not glanced at the trees. The session was neatly bookended by Hildreth’s straightforward snare to get rid of Sean Dickson off Josh Davey for 43 and then by Trescothick’s brilliant two-handed reflex effort high above his head which accounted for Daniel Bell-Drummond 15 minutes before the interval.Bell-Drummond’s 84-ball 33 was an essay in restraint and his 47-run fifth-wicket stand with Heino Kuhn took up almost an hour of the session. The partnership ended when Overton nipped one between Kuhn’s bat and pad, then Alex Blake played a dreadful stroke somewhere between a cut and a drive but only edged the ball on to his off stump. That seemed a vital dismissal at the time and still does. Every wicket has mattered in this game and Mother Cricket is not done with it yet.

Everton could land ideal Branthwaite replacement in "humble" £43m-rated rock

Everton have picked up enough points this season under Sean Dyche to have placed themselves firmly in the top ten, having won the same number of Premier League matches as both Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United, who are competing for the European places.

The ten-point deduction that the Toffees received hasn’t done justice to the fact that had Everton not been punished, the club would be in contention for one of the league’s seven available European places.

Nevertheless, with success comes more suitors for your players and Dyche's side are now facing a battle to keep hold of star defender Jarrad Branthwaite, although the Merseyside club do have one name lined up as his replacement.

Everton transfer news – Federico Gatti

According to a report from Calciomercato earlier this week, Everton are keeping tabs on Juventus defender Federico Gatti’s progress with the Italian giants and haven’t given up hope of signing him in January, despite Gatti signing a new five-year contract extension at the end of October.

Everton were one of several Premier League clubs that approached Juventus in the build-up to the summer deadline in the hopes of signing the centre-half, but Juve have now tied the Italy international down to a new long-term contract.

Nevertheless, Dyche is clearly in the market for another centre-back, particularly since it has been reported that star defender Jarrad Branthwaite is a top target for Manchester United this winter as Erik ten Hag looks for options to shore up his leaky defence.

Everton could replicate Branthwaite steal by signing £4m-rated Godfrey upgrade

This central defender could be the perfect replacement for Jarrad Branthwaite.

ByAdam Scully Dec 9, 2023

Losing Branthwaite would be a colossal blow for Everton as the ex-Carlisle United central defender has contributed massively to a defence that boasts the joint-fourth-fewest number of goals conceded this season.

Federico Gatti’s stats this season

Juventus have kept nine clean sheets in 15 matches this season in Serie A which is the second-most behind Inter Milan. Gatti has played in 13 of these matches, starting 12 alongside star defender Gleison Bremer.

Club captain Danilo has been left impressed with Gatti’s contribution to the team this season and even labelled the 25-year-old as a “humble boy” who has been “an example” to the rest of the squad in the current campaign. The reason for these comments is that Gatti was playing in the fourth tier of Italian football in 2020 and is now fighting for a league title with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

One area that sets Gatti apart from the rest of the defenders in Italian football is his threatening nature inside the penalty area. In 13 league appearances, the ex-Frosinone man has scored three goals. Only Dusan Vlahovic and Federico Chiesa have managed more this term for the Bianconeri.

As a result of his impressive form with the Old Lady, the CIES Football Observatory have placed Gatti’s market value currently at £43m, having been worth merely £4m twelve months ago.

Furthermore, Gatti has actually been outperforming Branthwaite in a number of key metrics for a centre-back.

As shown in the table above, Gatti is far more adept at playing out from the back – shown by his superior record with relation to progressive passes and progressive carries – although that's not to suggest that he can't also offer a brick wall defensively, as shown by his 69.7% aerials duels won per 90.

With that being said, Everton should definitely still look to keep Branthwaite, but if the club are forced to accept an offer for him this January, the Toffees may look no further than Gatti.

NSWE not messing around: Aston Villa ready to sign two players for Emery

Aston Villa owners NSWE are ready to back manager Unai Emery by signing two new attackers in the January transfer window.

Aston Villa transfer update

The club have been in brilliant form in 2023, especially at Villa Park, with Saturday’s 1-0 win over Arsenal seeing them achieve a new club record 15th home win in the Premier League.

Emery has overseen every one of those after replacing Steven Gerrard towards the end of 2022 and has taken Villa into Europe. Villa appear to be in a battle for a top-four finish or even a push for the title this time around, with NSWE backing him in the transfer window over the summer.

To ensure Villa don’t rest on their laurels, the club look to be ready to get the chequebook out once more in the New Year, with a fresh update coming to light.

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke, NSWE are ready to bankroll Emery again by signing two new attacking players for the Spaniard. One possible target named was RB Salzburg starlet Oscar Gloukh, whereas Villa also want a new centre-forward to provide competition to Ollie Watkins.

Unai Emery

Aston Villa attackers

Emery’s side haven’t exactly struggled for goals in the top flight this season, scoring 35 times in 20 league games, more than the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, Newcastle, Brighton, West Ham and Fulham in the top half.

In all competitions, Watkins is the top scorer during the current campaign with 13, whereas Leon Bailey has scored eight times and Douglas Luiz and John McGinn six a piece. Moussa Diaby and Jhon Duran have four each to their name, with eight other players getting their name on the scoresheet at some point. (Aston Villa top scorers – BBC)

Alongside strikers Watkins and Duran, Villa have Bailey and Diaby as regular wide options, loanee Nicolo Zainolo as an attacking midfielder, whereas Emiliano Bunedia and Bertrand Traore are currently sidelined through injury. (Aston Villa squad – Transfermarkt)

Therefore, you can see why Villa and Emery would want to add to their ranks in the final third, and bringing in two new additions could help them achieve their goal of qualifying for the Champions League or pushing for the title in the second half of the season, making this one to watch over the coming weeks.

Santner makes winning return after injury layoff

In his first competitive match in nine months after recovering from knee surgery, left-arm spin-bowling allrounder Mitchell Santner made a cameo with the bat, bowled three overs, and even took two catches. All these contributed to Northern Districts’ victory in the Super Smash opener.Santner came into bat in the 17th over after Norther Districts were inserted by Wellington Firebirds. He marked his return with a hard-run two and ended unbeaten on 22 off 13 balls, lifting his side from 179 for 4 to 215 for 6.Santner belted the third ball he faced straight over mid-off for four and then cracked James Neesham for two fours off three balls, including a firm back-foot punch through extra-cover.Santner got a life when he was dropped on 13 by Luke Woodcock at short fine leg off Neesham in the same over. He added nine more to his tally, setting Wellington 216.Santner’s bowling showed signs of rust: his first ball was a low full-toss that was hacked away to the leg side and his second was short, wide ball that was carved away behind point for four. He then tightened up and came away with figures of 0 for 28 in three overs.Santner tested out his knee in the outfield, taking two catches, including that of Malcolm Nofal, which sealed a 45-run win for Northern Districts.Santner had carried the knee complaint for a large chunk of the previous season and eventually needed surgery. He was sidelined from New Zealand’s Test series against England, Pakistan, and the ongoing series against Sri Lanka. Santner also missed the IPL with Chennai Super Kings and his county stint with Derbyshire earlier this year.

Club reach verbal agreement with 49ers to sign "impressive" Leeds player

A European club already have an agreement in place with Leeds United to sign one player next year, according to a new report.

Leeds exit news

It was a chaotic summer at Elland Road following relegation from the Premier League to the Championship, with new owners, a new manager and a number of outgoings and incomings in the playing squad. Plenty of Leeds players exercised clauses in their contracts to leave on loan after dropping down a division, with Luis Sinisterra the last to leave on a temporary basis, joining Bournemouth on deadline day.

One of the first to go was Marc Roca, who joined Real Betis back in his native Spain. There have been rumours on Roca's future, suggesting he may not return to the Whites next year regardless of what league Leeds are playing in, and a development has now emerged.

Estadio Deportivo shared an in-depth piece on the midfielder’s time at Real Betis so far, with an update on his future. They claim that Real Betis have a €12m option to sign Roca on a permanent deal next summer even if Leeds win promotion to the Premier League, and if the Whites remain in the Championship, there is a verbal agreement in place over another loan move.

Leeds United defender Marc Roca.

So, whatever happens at Elland Road between now and the end of the season, it looks as if Roca will remain in Spain with the player, Real Betis and Leeds “happy” with the agreement.

Marc Roca at Real Betis

Roca, labelled as “impressive” by former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann, has been a regular under Manuel Pellegrini in all competitions this season, even showing his versatility by playing as a centre-back on two occasions. In total, the 26-year-old has turned out on 16 occasions, scoring three times and providing one assist. (Marc Roca stats – Transfermarkt)

He seems to have benefitted from a move away from Leeds, as his average WhoScored match rating shows, going from 6.50/10 to 6.64/10 in the league while also recording a 6.94/10 score in the Europa League. Roca also previously admitted he was happy when it came to returning to Spain, saying:

“Obviously it’s always positive to return home. I came through in La Liga. I started my career here and after three years abroad, between Germany and England, I really wanted to come to Betis. I’m very happy and very comfortable on the pitch.”

By the looks of things, Leeds fans won’t be seeing Roca in a Whites shirt next season, and some may well be hoping that a permanent move goes through, which will allow the 49ers to receive a fee, as his current Leeds contract doesn’t expire until 2026.

Ten Hag must sell £250k-p/w Man Utd dud who has "irked" Old Trafford

Manchester United's week went from bad to worse last night. Following a 3-0 derby day demolishing at the weekend in the Premier League, the Red Devils had a chance to get back to winning ways at Old Trafford against bitter rivals Newcastle United in the EFL Cup, a replay of February's final at Wembley.

The Magpies picked up just one point from their last two games in all competitions and Eddie Howe heavily rotated his starting eleven, with upcoming games against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund on the near horizon.

However, it was Howe's men that came out on top, matching Manchester City's scoreline from Sunday and piling further misery on Erik ten Hag and his players, but one Manchester United man in particular dropped a below-par performance on the night.

Anthony Martial slammed for performance

Anthony Martial came from AS Monaco in Ligue 1 to Manchester United on transfer deadline day in 2015 as a relatively unknown entity, with the English giants forking out an initial £36m for his services, although this fee was to eventually rise to £57.8m with add-ons.

The Frenchman hit the ground running in his debut campaign as a 19-year-old, lighting up Old Trafford on his debut by scoring a memorable third goal in a 3-1 win over Liverpool after coming on for Juan Mata in the second half. Former teammate Paul Pogba even labelled the forward as "one of the best" players he had ever seen.

Martial started against Newcastle on Wednesday night, while summer signing Rasmus Hojlund dropped to the bench and the feeling around his performance was quite a contrast to his infamous debut eight years ago.

Manchester Evening News' Chief Writer Samuel Luckhurst, who was at the EFL Cup game, claimed that fans were "audibly irked with Martial" throughout proceedings. Club legend and pundit Gary Neville didn't hold back in his criticism of the centre-forward, stating that there "there is no way he should be leading the line in any competition".

The 27-year-old penned a new deal with the 20-time league champions back in 2019, keeping him at the club until 2024 with the option to extend his stay for a further year. According to Sportrac, Martial is currently on £250k per week at the Theatre of Dreams.

Martial's stats vs Newcastle

The frontman has earned £35.36m at Man United since the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign but has scored merely 11 goals in all competitions for the club, which comes to around £3.2m per goal. The France international even went on loan to La Liga outfit Sevilla during this time and the side's president, Jose Castro, admitted that the move "didn't work" out.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.

Last night, Martial's performance left a lot to be desired and the former Monaco man was replaced after 64 minutes by Hojlund after failing to make an impact on the game.

In fact, Martial registered just one shot across his time on the pitch which came shortly after the interval when he cut across the Newcastle defender to latch onto a nice low cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka but failed to convert the opportunity. This shot registered an xG of 0.17 which was also his one and only touch inside the opposition's penalty area, as per FotMob.

Furthermore, the opposition centre-backs had a relatively comfortable night against Martial who won merely one aerial duel from a possible five as well as zero ground duels and had only 22 touches of the ball in a side that ended the game with 62% possession.

With his contract running out at the end of the season, it looks highly unlikely that Manchester United will extend Martial's deal by a further year, particularly based on last night's turgid display.

Spurs: "Phenomenal" player now "at odds with Tottenham", he’s trying to go

It has been reported that a "phenomenal" Tottenham Hotspur player is now "at odds" with the club, and he is currently working to leave.

What's the latest Spurs transfer news?

Despite the signings of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, young centre-back Ashley Phillips, assured defender Micky van de Ven, England midfield star James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon, exciting striker Alejo Veliz and Wales forward Brennan Johnson over the summer transfer window, Lilywhites bosses apparently have their eyes on January.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has seriously impressed over his first six Premier League matches as manager, with his side currently boasting an early-season unbeaten streak. Indeed, the north Londoners have won four out of their opening six league games and stand out as one of the division's highest-scoring sides. Next up, Tottenham battle fellow high-flyers Liverpool on home turf tomorrow – a match which is shaping up to be a very interesting encounter.

However, their success on the field could well be hampered by potential injuries to star players. A scare surrounding Maddison this week highlights this in particular, and you could argue there are few options behind fellow summer signing van de Ven if the defender were to be sidelined. Potentially as a result, chairman Daniel Levy and new Chief Football Officer Scott Munn are reportedly considering targets for the winter window.

The likes of Gleison Bremer (Juventus) and Lloyd Kelly (Bournemouth) have been mooted as targets by the press, while Spurs could also allegedly move for Brentford star Ivan Toney.

Who could leave Tottenham?

To make room for these potential new additions, it is believed that a fair few fringe squad members may well depart. The likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Ivan Perisic, despite their injury woes, are being tipped to leave when the transfer window reopens for business.

Eric Dier, who is yet to play a single minute for Postecoglou this season, is another who could make way as there have been reports of serious interest from Roma. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, regardless of his status as a real mainstay under Antonio Conte last season, is another apparently eyeing the exit door.

Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz in action with Tottenham Hotspur'sPierre-EmileHojbjerg

The Dane has struggled for regular starting places under Postecoglou, as he doesn't quite fit in to the Australian's new-look system, with Calciomercato providing an update on his future.

According to the Italian news outlet, Hojbjerg is "at odds with Tottenham", with both the player and his agents putting feelers out to various clubs across Europe. This would allow the midfielder to "say goodbye" to Tottenham, and Juventus are named as a possible destination for him.

However, due to their financial problems, they cannot afford Spurs' £26 million asking price. They are hopeful that a loan can be negotiated through representatives, as Juve won't be able to afford a permanent deal unless "excellent sales" are made – according to the report.

Hojbjerg stood out as one of Spurs' best-performing players per 90 last season, according to WhoScored. The 28-year-old also bagged four goals and five assists in that time, with Jose Mourinho previously calling him a "phenomenal player".
