Nathan Lyon joins Hampshire on red-ball deal for 2020

Australia offspinner signs for Championship campaign at the Ageas Bowl

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Nov-2019Hampshire have pulled off a coup for the 2020 County Championship season after signing Nathan Lyon on a red-ball contract that, international commitments pending, ought to keep him at the club for the entirety of the campaign.Lyon, who toured with Australia this summer as part of their World Cup and Ashes squads, is arguably the finest offspinner to have represented his country, and certainly the most prolific, having claimed 363 Test wickets in 91 appearances – second among all Australian spinners only to the great Shane Warne. His 20 wickets in this summer’s Ashes included nine wickets in a matchwinning display in the first Test at Edgbaston (his 6 for 49 sealed victory in the second innings), and in the course of a 2-2 series that ensured that Australia retained the Ashes, he went past Dennis Lillee’s tally of 355 Test wickets to sit behind only Warne and Glenn McGrath in Australia’s all-time list.”I very much look forward to playing with Hampshire in next year’s County Championship,” said Lyon. “It is a fabulous opportunity to be involved with a leading county who have had a long and successful relationship with Australian cricketers.”One of those Australians, of course, is none other than Warne, who was Hampshire’s captain in the early 2000s and who still has a stand named after him at the ground.”I love playing cricket in England and no doubt will enjoy the 2020 summer with the Hampshire players, coaches, members and supporters,” Lyon added. “We will all be focused on winning the County Championship in 2020 – I can’t wait.”Lyon will play at Hampshire under the captaincy of James Vince – whom he faced on the England tour of Australia in 2017-18 – and will form part of an incisive attack led by Fidel Edwards and Kyle Abbott, the former South African quick whose 17 wickets at the Ageas Bowl in September did so much to derail Somerset’s bid for their maiden Championship title. He will slot into a Hampshire squad that already features four home-grown spinners, among them Liam Dawson, who was an unused member of England’s victorious World Cup squad, and Mason Crane, the legspinner who made his Test debut against Australia at Sydney in January 2018. Lyon has had one previous stint in county cricket, when he turned out for Worcestershire for four matches in 2017.Hampshire Director of Cricket, Giles White said: “Nathan is a really high-class spinner and we identified him in the summer as someone who would be a great addition to our Championship side. He has a real appetite for county cricket and is keen to be a part of what we’re trying to do here, so we’re delighted to secure his signature and we can’t wait to have him on board next summer.”

Batting without thinking of century did the trick – Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane is a relieved man, having broken a sequence of 17 Tests without a Test hundred. On the tour of the Caribbean, Rahane made 81 and 102 in the first Test in Antigua to mark his return to form.

This shut down all talk of his Test berth being under the scanner, something Virat Kohli firmly brushed aside prior to the series when he labelled Rahane as the “most sorted guy.”Between his 132 against Sri Lanka in August 2017 and the series in the West Indies in August, Rahane had averaged below nine other Indian batsmen who have played at least ten innings in that period.”The question of when I’m going to get that hundred is now over. I’m feeling relieved,” Rahane said at a press conference in Visakhapatnam ahead of the first Test against South Africa. “I believe that each and every match and series teaches you so much.”When I was first selected for the Indian team, I had to wait for almost two years and 17 Test matches before making my debut. And here again, had to wait for 17 Test matches to score a hundred.”Prior to the series, Rahane had a mixed county season with Hampshire, scoring 307 runs in 13 innings, stats that were fueled by one century – 119 – and one half-century.”When I was playing for Hampshire, I was thinking about my debut, how my mindset was positive and I was enjoying cricket,” Rahane said. :During these 17 Test matches [when] I was batting well but not getting hundreds, I was thinking about the century and it was going away from me.”So when I went in to bat in the West Indies, I told myself that I’m not going to think about the three-figure mark, and I’m going to enjoy batting. Batting according to the team’s demand was my priority. And yes, I batted when the team needed it, and that elusive hundred also came through.”

'They're not cricket fans' – Mitchell Johnson condemns booing of Steven Smith

Mitchell Johnson, the former Australia fast bowler, has condemned the minority of spectators at Lord’s who booed Steven Smith on his return to the crease after being felled by a Jofra Archer bouncer, telling ESPNcricinfo that they are “not cricket fans”.Smith’s return to Test cricket, after serving a year-long ban for his role in Australia’s ball-tampering scandal, has been spectacular, with matchwinning scores of 144 and 142 at Edgbaston last week, followed by yesterday’s 92 out in Australia’s first-innings total of 250.However, his visits to the crease have been greeted with a chorus of boos from some spectators who still maintain that he ought to be judged by his actions in Cape Town 18 months ago rather than his current exploits. And while Johnson believes they are broadly within their rights to do so, he felt that his reception on Saturday afternoon – as he resumed his innings on 80 not out after receiving treatment for two heavy blows to the neck and the left forearm – was beyond the pale.”One of the biggest disappointments for me was the crowd,” said Johnson. “Not the whole crowd, obviously, but a couple of boos could be heard through the effects mic, and that really disappointed me when he came back out to bat.”I don’t care what people say, they can say ‘yes, he’s a cheat and that’s why we’re booing him’, but that’s a load of rubbish to me. Yes, he’s done what he’s done, and you can boo him at the start of play when he comes onto the field if that’s how you feel. But for me, he’s taken a heavy knock – two heavy knocks – but he’s said ‘I can still bat here’. He’s braved up, he’s come through the concussion tests, and not many people would be able to do that.”Also read: Steven Smith blow brings cricket to a standstillJohnson, one of the few fast bowlers in recent Test history who was capable of bowling at the exceptional speed that Archer generated on day four of the second Test, also recalled the moment at Sydney in 2008-09, when South Africa’s captain Graeme Smith reappeared at No.11 in a bid to save the Test for his team, despite having had his hand broken by Johnson earlier in the match.”I remember in 2008 when Graeme Smith came out to bat, and the crowd were on their feet,” he said. “The majority of the fans here were, but for me, the ones that booed were not cricket fans.”Johnson, who had been commentating on Test Match Special when Smith was struck in the neck, recalled his unease at the incident, and said that he had sympathy with the England players – in particular Archer and Jos Buttler – who attracted some criticism on social media for appearing to laugh while Smith was receiving treatment.”I was on the radio when it happened, and I found it quite difficult to speak at the time because of the way Steve Smith hit the ground and lay there,” he said. “You could see he was moving around, but it obviously hurt him.”But what the England players did well was that Jos Buttler rushed straight up to him, and though Jofra Archer went back to the crease and rubbed his hands in the dirt, he then walked over to make sure he was okay.”In that situation they did everything they could as players. They made sure he was okay as best they could. They are not professionals in the medical world, so they have to leave that up to the professionals to make those decisions and sort that out.””There is a bit of stuff going around in social media about Buttler and Archer laughing and smiling, but you don’t know what they were laughing at, and for me they weren’t laughing at Steve Smith,” he added.”There was a bit of nervousness in the laughter. Archer was a bit shaken by it, he’s a cool character, really calm, but you could tell in his eyes there was a little bit of concern there as well.””But the game is played with the short ball,” Johnson added. “We saw Patty Cummins earlier in the Test going quite hard at Archer, so it’s expected in this game. There was nothing illegal about the delivery, I don’t think there was too much of it.”Speaking to Sky Sports before the start of the final day, Archer insisted that his primary aim had been to get Smith out, with a short leg and leg slip in place to combat his habit of working the short ball off his hip.”I honestly don’t know what I was thinking at the time,” Archer said. “Seeing someone go down, you don’t ever want to see anyone carried off on a stretcher, or you don’t want to see them missing a day, or a game, especially with what happened a few years ago [to Phil Hughes] as well. It’s never a nice sight.”Johnson agreed that England’s tactics were fair and appropriate, given the skill that Smith has displayed in the series to date.”How do you get Steve Smith out? We keep talking about it and England hadn’t tried that tactic of really going after him,” he said. “Unfortunately for Steve it has really rattled him up. He got hit on the arm first and he played a pull not too long after that he would not normally do. It definitely played on his emotions, his head, his skills. It’s part of the game and there’s been a little too much taken out of what’s happened out there today.”As a cricket watcher, I know everyone around the ground enjoyed that [battle], and even as an Australian fan back home, it would have been very exciting to watch a young up-and-coming superstar, going up against the best in the world, and getting the crowd riled up, and right behind him.”

Spurs missed out on huge Hojbjerg upgrade in £30m “Pitbull”

12 months ago, the dust was settling after an enthralling January transfer window that had seen hordes of deals completed in the Premier League, but this year's midseason market saw a staggering drop-off of roughly £700m with outfits far more frugal with their resources.

Tottenham Hotspur, however, were one of the busier clubs, with Ange Postecoglou demanding a new central defender following detrimental absences of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, injuries and suspension both.

Radu Dragusin was signed to the rearguard while former Chelsea forward Timo Werner added some creativity and dynamism to the attacking efforts, but Postecoglou was also keen on securing a centre-midfielder and failed in that regard.

Okay, maybe he didn't fail. Lucas Bergvall's transfer to Barcelona was hijacked at the eleventh hour by the Lilywhites and the 17-year-old, who has been hailed for his "generational" talent by one scout, will link up with the squad at the end of the term.

Spurs may already have their own Conor Gallagher in the academy

The Lilywhites could promote one of their own and put that money to better use elsewhere.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 2, 2024

But an established player to augment the engine room was not found, and while Chelsea's Conor Gallagher was the No. 1 target, Postecoglou might feel that the failure to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers star Joao Gomes is the biggest blow to his seasonal goals.

Spurs' interest in Joao Gomes

Last month, Brazilian reports suggested that Tottenham were interested in signing Gomes and had been told that a bid of around €35m (£30m) could be enough to seal the deal; the London club were considered frontrunners amid a hive of interest from other suitors.

There were rumours that a 'substantial' package from Tottenham was to be forthcoming and while this wasn't the case, Postecoglou's interest was genuine and a return in the summer is very much a possibility.

Joao Gomes' season in numbers

Wolves have been impressive and Gomes has been integral in the club's success, having grown into his skin in the Premier League this season after some promising displays in the first half of 2023.

As per Sofascore, Gomes has played 20 matches, completed 83% of his passes, averaged 3.2 tackles, 5.5 ball recoveries and 5.7 successful duels per game and succeeded with 60% of his dribbles.

As the table above portrays, Gomes is one of the finest tacklers in the Premier League and has been invaluable in the Wolves engine room, Gary O'Neil's side leapfrogging Chelsea into tenth place after dispatching the struggling Blues in their own backyard on Sunday afternoon.

During that contest, Gomes' performance was paramount toward winning the key midfield battle, winning seven duels and making six tackles.

Joao Gomes

The 22-year-old might not have the widest range of passing or the brightest creative spark, but he is industrious and has been described as "The Pitbull" – as per The Athletic's Steve Madeley – for his brutish, unflinching style on the pitch.

Tottenham have looked leagues above the mess that was the 2022/23 campaign and Postecoglou's leadership has sparked optimism that there could be riches to glean in the seasons down the line.

But the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium still needs work and Gomes would be the perfect player to strengthen the midfield and open up another dimension.

While the aforementioned Gallagher has many abilities that would make for a great fit at Tottenham, the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr already provide fluid midfield roles and Gomes might prove to be the better option given his innate defensive ability.

Joao Gomes is a better fit than Conor Gallagher

Wolves completed the £15m transfer of Gomes back in January 2023 from Brazilian team Flamengo and he showcased his talents over seven starting appearances during the latter half of the 2022/23 campaign, since rising to new heights under O'Neil's stewardship this season.

As per FBref, the Brazilian ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles and the top 3% for blocks per 90, showcasing his elite ability as a defensive force.

Wolves' Joao Gomes.

Malian star Yves Bissouma is Tottenham's tough-tackling technician in the centre and performs the role admirably but has spent five matches on the sidelines this season due to suspension and an alternative in Gomes could be a good move, especially with the expected return to European competition next year.

In fairness, Gallagher has averaged 2.5 tackles per fixture in the Premier League this season (only a fraction below Gomes) and has been praised for being "absolutely relentless with his pressing and energy" by The Athletic's Mike Stavrou, but he's not a natural anchor and Chelsea touted him at £80m in the late days of January.

But the England international also ranks among the top 10% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues for touches in the attacking penalty area and the top 11% for progressive passes received per 90, highlighting his aptitude as an immense ground-covering midfielder.

Gomes would be the shrewder man to sign on top of being the better-suited stylistic fit, and Postecoglou must seriously consider binning his interest in the Stamford Bridge star come summer.

Especially given that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is likely to leave at the end of the season; the Danish midfielder has only started six Premier League matches this season and while he has been crisp and composed in possession, his lack of progression and mobility precludes a prominent role in the system.

Pierre Hojbjerg.

Indeed, while he has completed 89% of his passes, Hojbjerg has only created 0.2 key passes per game, and though this might be forgiven if his defensive metrics were on point, the 28-year-old has averaged just one tackle and 2.3 successful duels per outing. That is quite a considerable way behind the industrious Gomes.

Hojbjerg was linked with a move away throughout the January transfer window but rejected offers from multiple angles, seemingly content with staying put until the summer, when he may have a greater choice of options.

Described as an "accurate & tenacious tackler" by talent scout Jacek Kulig back when he plied his trade in his homeland, Gomes has definitely transferred this core quality over to English shores.

He would add something different to the Tottenham team and given his raw defensive ability, it might just be that Gomes is a better fit for Postecoglou's side, with the likes of Bentancur and Sarr already offering excellent multi-functionality.

Given Gomes' relatively affordable price tag, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy might cast a rueful eye back to an opportunity missed come summer, when money flows more freely and the suitors will inevitably circle.

Leeds could land dream James partner in £50k-p/w Premier League "wizard"

While three wins from three has proven the perfect way to start 2024 for Leeds United, manager Daniel Farke will still be aware that there is much work still to do in order to bridge the gap between his rampant side and Ipswich Town in second.

With seven points separating the Whites and Kieran McKenna's high-flying outfit – with Southampton also now firmly in the picture – the Yorkshire giants really will need to put a consistent run of form together over the coming weeks and months if they are to mount a proper push for automatic promotion.

To aid that challenge, Farke is likely to require further reinforcements to help bolster a squad that was depleted by numerous departures over the summer, albeit with the only activity so far this month having been further outgoings, in the form of Djed Spence, Darko Gyabi and Luke Ayling.

Although that peripheral trio were happily shown the door by the Elland Road side, there may be fears that the squad has so far been weakened rather than strengthened in the winter window – despite the positive news that teenage sensation Archie Gray has signed a new 'long-term deal' at the club.

The hope will be that fresh faces will arrive before the close of the window at the start of next month, with numerous targets having already been mentioned in recent weeks, including a sparkling talent who is currently operating in the Premier League.

Leeds eyeing ex-Sheffield United man

According to Phil Hay of The Athletic, while Farke and co are prioritising the signing of at least one new full-back – amid the departures of Spence and Ayling – there could also be a fresh face to bolster the attacking ranks, in the form of Bournemouth's David Brooks.

As per Hay's recent report, Leeds believe an 'extra attacking midfielder' may prove 'useful' between now and the end of the season, with Brooks – who left Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United back in 2018 – said to be a 'player of interest'.

David Brooks

The Cherries are, however, wary of allowing the 26-year-old to depart on loan this month, although Hay suggested that such a stance could 'soften' as the window edges towards its climax, offering hope that a deal for the Wales international could be wrapped up.

Although the 5 foot 8 playmaker has been restricted to just two league starts this season, he will likely be raring to go to prove his talents once again with a consistent run of game time.

How David Brooks would fit in at Leeds

For much of the campaign so far, Farke has experimented with more unorthodox options in the number ten berth, with former Swansea City striker Joel Piroe featuring predominantly in that role, while fellow forward Georginio Rutter has also taken on that challenge in recent weeks.

Being able to acquire a more natural fit in that role behind the striker, such as Brooks, would certainly be a wise move, with the "Welsh wizard" – as described by the Bournemouth Echo's Jack Tynner – typically operating in an attacking midfield berth or on the flanks in his senior career to date.

Once on the books at Bramall Lane – where he registered 11 goals and assists in just 37 games for the Blades – the Warrington-born ace has now almost spent six years at the Vitality Stadium, albeit having seen much of that spell cruelly hampered after being diagnosed with cancer back in October 2021.

To his credit, Brooks has bravely fought his way back to establish himself as part of Andoni Iraola's first-team squad, producing a respectable haul of two goals and one assist in 16 games in all competitions this season, despite largely being utilised off the bench.

For Leeds, if a deal is to be struck, they will be hoping to coax out the type of performances that the 27-cap international had shown prior to his spell on the sidelines, notably registering 11 goals and assists in the Championship in 2020/21, as well as previously scoring seven goals and contributing five assists in the Premier League in 2018/19.

Evidently a player who can unlock a defence with a piece of creative magic – having created nine 'big chances' in that debut season at Bournemouth – as well as also being able to find the back of the net himself, Brooks would provide another weapon to Farke's attacking arsenal.

The hope would be that he could also strike up a partnership with his international colleague, Daniel James, with the former Manchester United man currently flourishing under the one-time Norwich City boss.

Daniel James' season by numbers

It is fair to say that James has finally found a home for himself this season after a turbulent last few years, with the oft-maligned winger having established himself as a key figure for the promotion hopefuls.

Leeds forward Dan James.

The 26-year-old had endured a difficult two years or so after joining from the Red Devils in 2021, scoring just four goals in his debut season at Elland Road, before being shipped off on loan to Fulham last term – where he netted just three times in 23 appearances.

With the likes of Jack Harrison and Luis Sinisterra no longer at the club, however, James has taken his chance under the new regime, scoring nine goals and registering six assists in 25 league games – the best return of his senior career so far.

Farke can then combine the winger's "raw pace" – as hailed by Ryan Giggs – with Brooks' majestic midfield quality, with the latter man having previously been lauded by former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe for his "creative flair" as he can "do a little bit of everything".

Leeds eyeing £4m-rated gem who's "like Riyad Mahrez" to partner Summerville

The Whites are seemingly keen to strengthen their ranks this month, amid their hunt for promotion.

ByRobbie Walls Jan 18, 2024

The £50k-per-week talent may still be in the process of getting back to his prior elite levels, yet surrounded by familiar faces – such as James, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu – he could well flourish in the second tier at Elland.

Not just then a dream partner for James, Brooks could also represent a dream January signing for the Yorkshire side.
