Liverpool’s "exceptional" 8/10 star was on par with Diaz vs Fulham

Liverpool withheld a spirited showing from Fulham to advance to the Carabao Cup final at Craven Cottage, with the 1-1 draw enough after Marco Silva's side lost 2-1 in the reverse leg two weeks ago.

Jurgen Klopp made several alterations to the side that dismantled Bournemouth in the Premier League last weekend but Liverpool proved their ability to compete across multiple fronts with an energetic and positive display.

There might have been a bit of a storm to weather in the closing phase but fears were eased early on after Luis Diaz's strike provided his side with a two-goal cushion on aggregate.

Luis Diaz's game vs Fulham in numbers

Diaz has ebbed and flowed this season, with his lack of prolificness handing detractors some substance in their arguments that he is flattering to deceive, but the Colombian is a real menace down that left channel and proved his worth in a crucial contest.

As per Sofascore, Diaz was a veritable livewire on the Fulham pitch, and having opened the scoring after ten minutes, he completed 84% of his passes, made three key passes, succeeded with all three of his attempted dribbles, won ten duels and drew three fouls, a thorn in the sides of the host defenders.

The 27-year-old will be well aware that his numbers need to improve but he brings so much electricity to Klopp's team and produced a complete performance in attack against Fulham.

His goal, while taking a deflection and raising questions around Bernd Leno's failure to palm the ball away, was a nice way to cap a combative and enterprising effort, served by centre-back Jarell Quansah, who might just have been Liverpool's biggest winner from a joyous evening in the capital.

Jarell Quansah's performance vs Fulham

Quansah, aged 20, was plying his trade in League One with Bristol Rovers last season, now rising to the fore as one of Anfield's most exciting academy graduates in years.

Partnership Virgil van Dijk last night, the 6 foot 5 titan was composed and commanding in the backline and complemented his defensive efforts with the wonderful pass for Diaz to control and score from.

Taking 77 touches, Quansah completed 82% of his passes and succeeded with his one attempted dribble, though most impressively he made a whopping seven clearances to smash danger away from Caoimhin Kelleher's goal.

Liverpool World journalist Will Rooney certainly noticed the rising talent's display, handing him a healthy 8/10 match rating and writing: 'Excellent diagonal ball would provide the assist for Diaz's opener and he was solid throughout. Made one big block to keep out Palhinha in the closing stages.'

Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.

Praised for his "exceptional" display by The Athletic's James Pearce, Quansah looks every bit the established star in Klopp's system and his aerial delivery for Diaz's deflected strike means that he boasts a goal and three assists from just 16 senior outings for the Reds.

A tad unlucky to unwittingly divert the ball that handed Diop the equaliser, Quansah is showcasing his calibre as a high-class defensive prospect, and was crucial in ensuring that Liverpool move to the last stage of their bid for a first slice of silverware this season.

Mosaddek's blazing fifty seals historic win for Bangladesh

Mosaddek Hossain’s blinder, the perfect follow-up to the start provided by Soumya Sarkar, handed Bangladesh their first-ever ODI final win, as they chased down 210 inside the stipulated 24 overs, which was set after West Indies reached 152 for 1 following a five-hour rain break.Mosaddek raced to his fifty off 23 balls, striking five sixes and two fours in his unbeaten 27-ball 52. He took charge in the 22nd over, with Bangladesh still needing 27 from 18 balls, going after left-arm spinner Fabian Allen as he hit him for three sixes and a four. Mahmudullah, his partner at the crease at the time, struck the winning runs in the next over with a rasping cover drive, with seven balls remaining.West Indies were poor in the field for most parts. They were sloppy at the boundary and the bowlers conceded a number of wides. Their strong top-order contribution was once again let down by their bowlers and fielders. They couldn’t contain Soumya, who made 66 off 56 balls at the top of the order with nine fours and three sixes, and made the job easier for the rest of the line-up. Soumya began the chase with two fours over cover off Ashley Nurse in the first over. Nurse then dropped Tamim Iqbal off Kemar Roach in the third over, a sitter at short third man. Soumya, having gained the strike from the resultant single, slammed a stylish six over wide long-on and two more fours to take 17 off the over.It was Shannon Gabriel who pulled things back by dismissing Tamim and Sabbir Rahman in the sixth over. But this hardly affected Soumya’s flow as he struck Jason Holder for two fours immediately, and then went on to reach his fifty off 27 balls, the fourth-fastest by a Bangladesh batsman. With Mushfiqur Rahim also motoring along briskly, Bangladesh reached their highest-ever score at the end of the first 10 overs of an ODI innings. Soumya, however, lost his wicket in the 12th.Mushfiqur’s quickfire 36 off 22 balls, which included two sixes, ended in the 14th over when Raymon Reifer pinned him in front. After Mohammad Mithun fell two overs later, the chase got tense, with Bangladesh needing 67 off the last 50 balls. But Mahmudullah and Mosaddek took them home with their unbroken 70-run stand for the sixth wicket.Sent in to bat, West Indies had moved to 125 for no loss in 20.1 overs, thanks to their opening pair of Shai Hope and Sunil Ambris, before rain stopped play for nearly five hours. Ambris and Hope had both reached their fifties before the rain break, and had looked in full control after surviving a number of plays and misses in the first nine overs. It wasn’t until the third over that Ambris went big, when he drove Mashrafe between extra cover and mid-off for the first four of the innings. Play resumed at 5.30pm local time, with the match now shortened to 24 overs a side, and West Indies added 21 runs in their remaining 3.5 overs.

Everton could sign £30m Harrison upgrade who’s a "nightmare for defenders"

Everton have entered into arguably the club's most important transfer window so far in the Premier League era.

Sitting one point above the relegation zone, the Toffees need to invest in the squad to ensure that they aren't caught by the chasing pack. Goalscoring has become a problem area for the side this season.

All confirmed Premier League done deals: January transfer window 2024

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

Only five teams in the English top-flight have scored fewer goals than Sean Dyche's men in the 2023/24 campaign but the manager is reportedly eyeing up solutions to alleviate the Merseyside club's woes up top.

Everton transfer news – Wilfried Gnonto

According to journalist Rudy Galetti, Everton have been in talks with Leeds United for several weeks over the potential signing of winger Wilfried Gnonto before the winter deadline slams shut.

The Toffees were linked with the Italian attacker during the summer too and Shamoon Hafez even revealed that the Championship outfit rejected a £25.75m bid from Everton and were holding out for at least £30m.

How Wilfried Gnonto compares to Jack Harrison

Gnonto proved to be a popular figure at Elland Road last season as the club were relegated from the Premier League, earning plaudits from football scout Jacek Kulig who described him as an "absolute nightmare for defenders".

His four goals and four assists in 28 appearances in his debut campaign in English football garnered interest from clubs in the top flight and, as a result, Gnonto handed in a transfer request.

Nevertheless, Leeds managed to hold onto his services for at least another half-season, but Football Insider have since reported that the Yorkshire club are now willing to let the Italy international leave this month, with Everton reigniting their interest in the forward.

Leeds are firing on all fronts this season. Daniel Farke's regular front four, consisting of Daniel James, Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville, have all recordedten or more goal contributionsthis season. Between them, they have54 goal contributionsin total as the Peacocks are thefourth-highest scorersin the Championship this term.

wilfried-gnonto-leeds-united-transfer-injury-daniel-james-jaidon-anthony

Gnonto has become nothing but a mere afterthought under the new manager. The former Inter Milan man has played 20 times this season in all competitions but his game-time averages out at 35 minutes per appearance. Additionally, he has scored just once and recorded one assist.

However, if Dyche can get Gnonto back to the player he was last season, there is a real chance that he can take his former teammate Jack Harrison's place in the starting lineup at Goodison Park.

Indeed, when comparing Gnonto's stats from the previous campaign to this season, the 20-year-old looks like a much more productive player.

In 18 appearances, Harrison has recorded merely three assists as his expected assists tally per 90 is just 0.19.

As a mere teenager, Gnonto was already boasting better stats and looks to have a much higher ceiling than the Englishman. If Dyche wants a player who can score goals and get assists from either flank, he should look no further than Gnonto.

Journalist hands West Brom huge Daryl Dike injury boost

A "very important" West Brom player could now return from injury during the festive period, according to a key fitness update from journalist Matt Maher.

West Brom transfers & injuries

Anyone of a Baggies persuasion should be feeling relatively positive about on and off-field matters currently, with things heading in the right direction, including with the proposed takeover of the club.

Carlos Corberan's side look right in the promotion mix ahead of the second half of the season, too, sitting in the Championship play-off positions and hope to remain that way up until May. An automatic promotion place isn't out of the question, although there is a fair amount of ground to make up on both Leicester City and Ipswich Town.

New signings in the January transfer window could be perfect for West Brom, giving them extra quality and depth as the fixtures come thick and fast – and they have been linked with plenty of players recently.

The Baggies are believed to be interested in signing Liverpool youngster Conor Bradley on loan, for example, with the right-back seen as someone who can come in and make a difference, earning first-team action rather than not featuring at Anfield.

However, injuries have hampered West Brom, with striker Daryl Dike a long-term absentee, and midfielder John Swift also someone who has been missing of late.

Daryl Dike set for West Brom return

Taking to X on Friday, Maher claimed that Dike could be back in the fold for West Brom before the festive action reaches its conclusion, acting as a major boost for Corberan.

"Finally some good news for Carlos Corberan and #wba on the injury front. John Swift available for Middlesbrough, while Daryl Dike could return before the end of the festive period. Striker, out since April, took part in full training today."

Having Dike available again is a major shot in the arm for Corberan, who will need as much firepower as possible this season if his side are to ensure that they at least have a crack at the play-offs.

The American's time at The Hawthorns has been hugely frustrating to date because of fitness issues, with only 27 appearances and seven goals coming his way. The 23-year-old is someone with so much potential, and he has shown in the past what an impact he can make in the Championship, netting 16 times in 44 matches in the competition.

Corberan has spoken of his admiration for Dike in the past, lauding his importance to the cause earlier this year, saying:

“He had a long-term injury but he’s a very important player for us. “The fitter he is, the better it is for the team. The more he trains, the better condition he’s in to perform."

West Brom could sign £1m-rated "huge talent" to improve Thomas-Asante's fortunes

West Brom could get the best out of Thomas-Asante this winter by signing this £1m-rated “huge talent”.

ByAdam Scully Dec 20, 2023

The ten-cap and three-goal USA international has had such an unlucky time with injuries in his career, but if he can just enjoy an extended period on the pitch, he could yet flourish for West Brom, hopefully inspiring them back into the Premier League.

Okay with batsmen's numbers dropping as long as we're winning – du Plessis

Tasked with batting in some of the toughest conditions in the world, the South Africa captain said players got to keep their places if they helped win Test matches

Liam Brickhill at Newlands04-Jan-2019

AFP

South Africa’s bowlers dominated headlines in 2018 and helped to make home a fortress, but on the second day at Newlands, the batsmen finally had their day in the sun. Aiden Markram kicked things off with a fluid 78 on Thursday, Temba Bavuma struck 75 to continue the good form he showed at Centurion, Faf du Plessis cracked his ninth Test ton – and first at Newlands, and Quinton de Kock played the No. 7 role to perfection, rapidly increasing South Africa’s advantage with a free-flowing fifty. There was some talk ahead of this series of Hashim Amla’s powers being on the wane, but Amla is not the only member of South Africa’s squad who struggled to find the middle of his bat in Tests in 2018. Du Plessis had a challenging year, averaging just 24.36 (over two runs less than Amla), while Markram scored his Test runs at a shade over 33, and Dean Elgar managed 36.72. Bringing up the rear, de Kock contributed his runs at just 21.77 last year. Those don’t appear to be the sort of numbers to set the Test world alight with. But, thanks to the bowlers, they were more than enough to better both India and Australia. If your bowlers are winning matches, does it really matter if the batsmen don’t score?”In a perfect world, everyone’s scoring hundreds, everyone is doing really well,” du Plessis explained ahead of this Test. “But our success rate in home conditions the last three years has been at a very, very high percentage. And that’s meant it’s been a little bit tough on the batters at home. [That’s how it will be] when you’re playing against quality seam attacks, which most teams have around the world now.”India was here, they have a great seam attack, Australia were here with a great attack, and now Pakistan. The numbers from the batters will drop a bit, but for me, and the coach, we’re okay with that. We’re okay with looking at winning cricket. Our focus is to win as often as we can, and statistically that is the case at the moment.”Indeed it is – in the last three years, South Africa have won 14 out of 19 home Tests, losing just three times.South Africa have what they believe to be the best Test attack in world cricket, and a look at the numbers makes that suggestion hard to counter. Conditions here undoubtedly help. At home, they play on pitches that usually offer pace, bounce and movement, and after his working over in the first Test against Pakistan, Dean Elgar called South Africa “definitely the toughest place in the world to bat”. He had the bruises to prove it.”It is tough,” agreed du Plessis. “I can promise you it’s not just tough for them. It’s tough on the captain as well. I also want to be scoring hundreds and averaging fifty. But it’s a good mindset in our changing room. We speak about that, and it’s something that we’re ok with. And I think you can look at our openers as examples. They are guys that front up to tough conditions all season round. And I think what makes us that little bit different to other teams is that we are okay with it. If it means failure, as long as we’re winning, then the team does buy into it.”But it is tough on young guys making their mark, playing on wickets that are a little bit spicy. And then you go overseas and you play in the subcontinent, where the ball probably spins from day one. So it’s tough at the moment for guys, but as with the captain, they just want to win games of Test cricket. They’re very happy. If we’re winning, everyone stays in the team.”Bavuma is one of the young players making his mark whom du Plessis may have been thinking about, but temperament and technique have made him the pick of South Africa’s batsmen in this series. Those characteristics have also meant he has prospered even as others have struggled. He averaged 42.14 in 2018, his best year since his debut in 2014.It has been three years, almost to the day, since he scored his maiden Test hundred at this very ground against England. Bavuma came close to a second Test ton before he ran out of partners against Australia at the Wanderers last March, but that difficult second ton continues to evade him. Be that as it may, he has now played two vital hands in two Tests, clawing the ascendancy back with his fifty at Centurion, and putting South Africa well ahead with his 75 here, sharing a 156-run stand with his captain. A ton missed, but job done.”If I look at the positive, it’s that I managed to get the team into a strong position,” Bavuma said. “I try not to focus too much on my personal ambitions and milestones. As long as I’m contributing to the cause of the team, the guys are happy with my commitment and efforts, I can also sleep with a smile on my face.”Bavuma also reiterated du Plessis’ thoughts about seam-friendly conditions in South Africa. “Everyone is using conditions to their advantage, and I don’t think we should do any different,” he said. “We’re playing at home. We know how to play at home. We’ve got a strong quartet of fast bowlers, and we want to give them everything possible to be at their best.Bavuma cashed in after a close call with the catch that wasn’t, and the judicious use of a review after he had been given out lbw, before he, like du Plessis, was eventually undone by a steepler from Shaheen Afridi. But de Kock swished his way to fifty from 59 balls, extending South Africa’s lead to 205 runs at stumps. In the coming days, South Africa’s bowlers will be the ones to, in all likelihood, seal the Test and the series, but the sunny second day at Newlands was all about the batsmen for once.

After a Lindsay Horan shot attempt was blocked in the box, a bit of pinball and loose passes saw the U.S. regain possession outside the Canada box. Sophia Smith was fed on the right side of the pitch, and after a cheeky shimmy move, she ripped a low-driven effort into the bottom corner of the net to draw the U.S. level just five minutes into the second half.

She notched a brace in the 68th minute with a shot from 15 yards out after a lovely one-two combo play in the buildup with Trinity Rodman to give the USWNT a 2-1 lead.

Canada opened the scoring in the match in the 40th minute after a blunder between goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and defender Tierna Davidson, and after the halftime break, the USWNT responded phenomenally.

Canada, however, did not give up. With just minutes to spare, they earned a penalty through Adriana Leon, who scored in the 86th minute to make the match 2-2.

The two sides went straight to the penalty spot to determine a victory after a regulation draw, with the USWNT coming out on top 7-6. Naeher saved three penalties as the U.S. claimed victory.

Donovan's historic MLS career saw him leave the game with 145 goals scored – a number that stood until ex-San Jose Earthquakes and USMNT striker Chris Wondolowski surpassed him in 2018.

Kamara, meanwhile, has scored 144 goals in MLS since the start of his career in 2006, and he needs just two more in 2024 to surpass the LA Galaxy legend.

LAFC are set to be the 11th MLS club he debuts at, after plying his trade in 2023 with the Chicago Fire, where he netted five goals. According to, Kamara has been training with the Western Conference club as a free agent and they're set to add him to their ranks this week.

Kamara has been a journeyman his entire career, setting an MLS record in 2023 for debuting with the most clubs across the league with 10. However, he's now set to add an 11th as he looks to surpass Donovan as one of the best-ever strikers in MLS.

LAFC, meanwhile, are in need of immediate striker service prior to the touted arrival of France international and AC Milan star Olivier Giroud this summer. The former Chelsea forward, 37, has 14 goals and nine assists in all competitions for the Rossoneri this season, turning out stupendously for the Italian club.

Transfer news: Pochettino fuming after club approached "great" Chelsea ace

Chelsea went through quite the overhaul in the summer, with an incredible number of departures to make room for a similar number of reinforcements to build Mauricio Pochettino a squad capable of making a return to the Premier League's top four. And, after a rocky start, back-to-back victories show that the Argentine is starting to guide the Blues back into top form in England's top flight.

When the January transfer window swings open, the London giants will undoubtedly be front and centre once again when it comes to the biggest deals. But they may also have to keep an eye on outgoings, having been left fuming by an approach for one of Pochettino's players.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

The Blues were ruthless in the summer, bidding farewell to the likes of Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, and Mateo Kovacic all to rival clubs in the Premier League top six, to make room for Romeo Lavia, Moises Caicedo, Cole Palmer and others. With their squad now assembled, they would have hoped to have little need for reinforcements in January, but three wins in their first eight games proved that Chelsea are far from the finished article.

It must be said, however, that keeping hold of important players could be the key. The latest Conor Gallagher transfer news revealed that the midfielder has already been approached over a January move, reportedly leaving Pochettino and Chelsea fuming.

According to Football Transfers, Steven Gerrard, the manager of Saudi Pro League's Al-Ettifaq, recently contacted Gallagher about a January move, which the midfielder turned down. Pochettino has reportedly been left angered by Gerrard's attempts to turn the heads of his players.

Having seemingly rejected the move, Gallagher looks set to stay put at Stamford Bridge, where he'll hope to help his side turn a poor start into a resurgent run of form in the race for a Champions League place.

How has Conor Gallagher performed this season?

conor-gallagher-chelsea-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-yves-bissouma-postecoglou

Gallagher has been a surprisingly important part of Pochettino's side this season, starting in all eight Premier League games, including in recent back-to-back victories over Fulham and Burnley. His performances have resulted in some deserved praise, including from Pochettino, himself, who said, via The Mirror:

"Conor is a player who can run a lot and this is massive. He is a great professional and he can play in different positions as a No8, No10 or a No6. He is box-to-box, he can run and can finish and assist, like he did for Raheem Sterling [against Burnley]. We are so happy with him."

Meanwhile, Gallagher's stats have even been better than his fellow Chelsea midfielders in some key areas, as per FBref.

The former Crystal Palace loanee will only hope to get better under Pochettino, too, having reportedly turned down the chance to join up with Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq.
