Shafali, Mandhana guide India to series win

India restricted the hosts to a below-par 117 for 8 and then chased the target down with nine balls to spare

India have won the five-match series 3-0•BCB

A clinical bowling display and a 91-run opening stand from Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana helped India overcome Bangladesh by seven wickets in the third T20I and seal the five-match series 3-0 in Sylhet. After opting to bowl first on an overcast day, India restricted the hosts to a below-par 117 for 8. Shafali blazed her way to a 38-ball 51 while Mandhana made 47 to complete the formalities for India. Bangladesh have now lost all of their last six T20Is.Shafali, Mandhana make merry
India will be content with both their openers getting some runs in Bangladesh – where the T20 World Cup will be held later this year – after a disappointing tour in 2023, when Shafali scored a total of 30 runs and Mandhana 52 from three matches. On Thursday, the duo put on a solid show off 73 balls in a boundary-laden opening stand to blunt Bangladesh. Mandhana and Shafali combined have 2075 runs from 65 innings in T20Is, the second-highest tally across all teams and most for an Indian pair.Shafali began the fireworks from the get-go, starting with a powerful lofted drive over left-arm pacer Fariha Trisna’s head in the second over. She utilised the loose deliveries from the bowlers and hit eight fours in the powerplay to reach 45 off 28 balls. This included three successive fours off left-arm spinner Nahika Akter’s over. At the end of the powerplay, India were 59 for 0, needing just 59 from the remaining 84 balls. It took a stunning one-handed return catch from Ritu Moni in the 13th over to dismiss Shafali and break the opening partnership. On the other end, Mandhana kept the scorecard ticking with elegant cover drives, sweeps, and paddle sweeps, as she also ensured to rotate the strike regularly. She also came down the track and clobbered a six over long-on fence off legspinner Rabeya Khan in the ninth over. She looked set to score her maiden T20I fifty in Bangladesh but fell three short after she skied one to deep square leg off Nahida Akter. Overall, she hit five fours and a six in 41 balls.Bangladesh picked up three wickets for 19 runs after 12 overs, but it was too late to make a comeback into the game as India chased the target in 18.3 overs.Brisk start before the Bangladesh collapse
Bangladesh started the innings positively, with both openers Dilhara Akter and Murhsida Khatun remaining unbeaten at the end of the powerplay. They scored 44 for 0 in that phase and also benefitted from sloppy fielding from India. For the second time in as many games, Harmanpreet Kaur dropped a catch in the fifth over to hand a life to Dilhara, who went on to score a quickfire 39. In the next over, S Sajana couldn’t hold on to a difficult catch when Dilhara went for a sweep but top-edged to square-leg. In the same over, India also missed a run-out opportunity to dismiss Akter. However, as was the case in the second game, Bangladesh lost some steam in the middle overs after putting on 46 runs for the opening stand. Murshida (9 off 16) was dismissed run-out off a free-hit from Radha Yadav in the seventh over when Deepti Sharma fired a sharp throw from point. Dilhara scored five clean boundaries in her 27-ball stay to provide a solid foundation but departed in the eighth over when she was caught behind off a slower delivery from Renuka Singh.Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana and Sobhana Mostary shared 30 runs off 36 for the third wicket before Mostary was run out in the 14th over. This triggered the collapse as Bangladesh went from 85 for 2 to lose the next six wickets for 32 runs. Radha finished with 2 for 22 while Shreyanka and Pooja Vastrakar picked up a wicket apiece.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca insists Club World Cup can be 'more important than the Champions League' as tactician reveals game plan that helped Blues down 'best in the world' PSG in 'first 10 minutes' of final

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca claimed that winning the Club World Cup would be considered more prestigious than lifting the Champions League title in the coming years. The Italian coach also revealed his game plan that helped Chelsea thrash Paris Saint-Germain in the final at New Jersey on Sunday and win their second trophy of the 2024-25 campaign.

Maresca had a dream debut campaign at Stamford Bridge as he led the Blues to their second trophy of the 2024-25 season in the US on Sunday. Chelsea were on a roll in the final against Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain as Cole Palmer scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro's third to secure the Club World Cup title for the Premier League giants.

  • WHAT MARESCA SAID

Speaking to reporters after the triumph at MetLife Stadium, the Italian coach said: "I consider this competition, the truth is that one day I said to the guys inside that I have the feeling that this competition is going to be as important, if not more important, than the Champions League. I was lucky three years ago to be part of the coaching staff when we won the Champions League [at Man City].

"I lived all these moments, but the truth is that this competition is one of the best in the world. We value it as the Champions League, if not more so, because it has really been a great triumph for us, and to allow the fans of Chelsea to have the chance for the next four years with this badge, the truth is that for us it is an honour."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Maresca further revealed his plan that helped Chelsea pip 'favourites' PSG as he added: "Yeah, as you said, there are three midfielders, two of them were in charge of Reece [James] and Moi [Caicedo] this point, and Vitinha was in charge of Enzo [Fernandez]. Analysing them, we saw that it was a good opportunity to exploit that space, and we scored a goal on that side.

"It was just a game plan, as we said many times, we tried to use different game plans, and we tried to help the players to be in a position where they can give everything. Today, it worked quite well. But overall, I think, as I just said, it has been the effort from all the team, all the players, and I'm very happy, especially for them, because they deserve this moment."

Their own Yamal: Spurs begin work to sign a "future Ballon d'Or winner"

Things might have gone awry this season, but the plan at Tottenham Hotspur is clear.

Daniel Levy and Co want to improve the team but have decided to build for the future and focus on young and up-and-coming talents in recent transfer windows to do so.

For example, last winter, the club signed Lucas Bergvall from Swedish side Djurgårdens for around £8.5m and then in the summer, they picked up Archie Gray from Leeds United for £30m and Wilson Odobert from Burnley for around £25m.

They will continue using this approach this summer, as recent reports have linked the club with an incredibly exciting young player who has been compared to Lamine Yamal.

Spurs looking at signing "future Ballon d'Or winner"

We may still be a couple of months away from the transfer window officially opening, but that has not stopped Spurs from being linked with several young and exciting talents.

Southampton's TylerDiblingin action with AFC Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen

Perhaps one of the most consistent links has been to Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, who has been valued at around £55m but could potentially be available for less when the Saints are inevitably relegated at the end of the season.

Another young Englishman who has been touted for a £38m move to N17 has been Sunderland’s 17-year-old sensation Chris Rigg, who has thrived this season, scoring four goals and providing one assist in 37 appearances, most of which have come in midfield.

Yet, at least so far, the most exciting link of the lot is to a 21-year-old winger who has been seriously impressing in France this year: Rayan Cherki.

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Spurs are one of several teams incredibly interested in the Lyon ace.

Olympique Lyonnais' RayanCherkiapplauds fans

In fact, alongside Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Newcastle United, the Lilywhites have already made contact and asked ‘to be kept informed about’ the star’s situation.

However, while the level of competition is far from ideal, the good news is that, according to the story, there is an agreement between the club and the player that he’ll be allowed to leave for less than £25m this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Overall, it could be a complicated transfer to get over the line for Spurs, but given Cherki’s immense ability and potential, it’s one well worth fighting for, especially as he’s won comparisons to Yamal.

How Cherki Compares to Yamal

Now, before we get to some of the other reasons why Spurs should look to sign Cherki this summer, it’s worth examining this comparison to Yamal and where it comes from.

Barcelona talent Lamine Yamal

In this case, it primarily stems from FBref, which looks at players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one and, in this instance, has concluded that the Spaniard is the fourth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Frenchman.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals plus assists, passes into the penalty area, through balls, successful take-on percentage, goal-creating actions and more, all per 90.

However, as brilliant as it is to be compared to a European Champion and one of the most exciting players in world football, it’s not the only reason the Lilywhites should be looking to sign the Lyon ace.

For example, he’s been having an incredible season of his own this year.

In just 35 appearances, totalling 2355 minutes, he’s scored eight goals and provided 18 assists.

That means the “future Ballon d’Or winner,” as dubbed by The Athletic’s Alex Barker, is averaging a goal involvement every 1.34 games, or every 90.57 minutes.

Olympique Lyonnais' RayanCherkiin action with Fenerbahce's Dusan Tadic and Fenerbahce's Sebastian Szymanski

Ultimately, if Spurs are going to continue building a team full of young up-and-coming prospects, as it looks like they are, then there are not many better additions they could make this summer than Cherki.

The Old Trafford club have been heavily linked with the Brentford star, but are preparing to lose out to Spurs. United lodged a £55 million offer to the west London club, but have been outmanoeuvred by Tottenham's reported bid of £70m. ESPN are now reporting United have earmarked Bournemouth's Semenyo and Palace's Eze as potential Plan Bs.

Both players have been linked with a move to north London themselves, but it is believed Thomas Frank wants to reunite with the impressive Mbeumo. Semenyo and Eze impressed in the 2024/25 season, respectively logging 16 goal contributions in the Premier League.

Mbeumo remains the prized asset however. A recent analysis of xG performance revealed Mbeumo was the most efficient goalscorer in last season's Premier League. The Cameroonian bagged 20 goals, on just 12.3 xG.

Slot must finally cash in on Liverpool flop who earns even more than Isak

Are Liverpool supporters ‘settling’ for ‘just’ a Premier League title this season or are they enjoying one of the best seasons in the club’s modern history?

The Reds were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United in the final of the League Cup, lost to Plymouth Argyle in the fourth round of the FA Cup, and were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

This means that Arne Slot’s side’s only chance of winning silverware this season is the league title and, at this point, they are 12 points clear of Arsenal with nine matches left to play.

As you can see in the clip above, there were no fans allowed inside the stadium to watch the only Premier League title success in Liverpool’s history to date, which would not be the case this time.

This is not to say that supporters should be happy that their team has suffered setbacks in multiple other competitions, but this is still set to be a historic campaign for the club.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their second goal

Despite that, Liverpool may still look to the summer transfer window to improve their squad for next season, with the star of Sunday’s League Cup final reportedly on their radar.

Liverpool's interest in Alexander Isak

Earlier this week, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the Reds are one of the clubs interested in a deal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “But I keep telling you that big, big, massive proposals will come to the table for Alexander Isak because Arsenal will be there, Arsenal want Isak.

“Liverpool are also there for Alexander Isak, they already made some contacts with people close to the player, so both clubs are interested in Alexander Isak. For Arsenal, he is the absolute top target. For Liverpool, he’s one of names they are considering in that position.”

These quotes from Romano suggest that it will take a big push from Michael Edwards and the recruitment team to land the Sweden international, as he is seemingly a big priority for the Gunners.

Ahead of the January transfer window, The Telegraph reported that it would take a fee in excess of a British record £150m to tempt the Magpies into cashing in on the centre-forward. It added that Newcastle’s demands also caused Chelsea to end their pursuit of the former Borussia Dortmund man.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

It now remains to be seen whether or not the Reds are prepared to splash out a record fee on the Magpies star, who showcased his quality against Slot’s men at Wembley on Sunday.

Isak, who scored – what turned out to be – the winner in the League Cup final, is reportedly on £120k-per-week at St. James’ Park, and Liverpool already have a number nine who earns more than him at Anfield.

Liverpool's top wage earners

The Reds, in fact, have many players who earn more than the Newcastle superstar currently does on Tyneside, which suggests that they have the wage budget to fit him into their current structure – if they do decide to stump up the £150m fee.

Mohamed Salah celebrates for Liverpool

Mo Salah, whose contract expires in the summer, is reportedly on a weekly wage of £350k and has paid that back with 27 goals and 17 assists in the Premier League this season.

He has provided goals and assists on a regular basis in the top-flight, pushing his team towards the title this term, and there may not be many complaints about how much the club are paying him for his services.

As you can see in the table above, Uruguay international Darwin Nunez, on a reported wage of £140k-per-week, also earns more than the £150m-rated Liverpool target Isak.

With this and the club’s interest in the Swedish forward in mind, Slot must finally ditch the former Benfica centre-forward in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Why Liverpool must sell Darwin Nunez

Liverpool splashed out a club-record fee of £85m to sign the number nine from Benfica in the summer of 2022 to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s options at the top end of the pitch.

Unfortunately, however, Nunez has not proven to be a reliable forward for either Klopp or Slot in the subsequent seasons in English football, as his finishing has often left far too much to be desired.

The 25-year-old forward, as you can see in the clips above, has had his fair share of good moments in a Liverpool shirt, scoring 40 goals in 136 matches for the club to date.

Nunez has, however, missed a staggering 81 ‘big chances’ in all competitions since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, with 28 in his first season, a mind-blowing 38 last term, and 15 in the current campaign.

This means that the £85m signing has missed just over twice as many ‘big chances’ as he has scored goals for the Premier League giants, which shows that the ex-Benfica man is far from reliable enough in front of goal to be a consistent scorer.

As you can see in the table above, Isak has significantly outperformed the Liverpool man at the top end of the pitch in the Premier League since the start of last season, scoring 40 goals to Nunez’s 16.

This shows that Newcastle are getting far more out of the Swedish star for £120k-per-week wages than the Reds are getting from Nunez for his £140k-per-week wages, on top of the £85m transfer fee.

NBC host Rebecca Lowe claimed that the striker had “been a bit rubbish” for the Reds last year, and it remains difficult to argue against that comment with his poor ‘big chance’ conversion rate across almost three years at the club.

Darwin Nunez in action for Liverpool

Therefore, Slot should look to finally move on from the Uruguay international in the summer in the hope that he can be replaced by a reliable number nine, whether that is Isak or another player.

Atletico Madrid and Al-Nassr have both been reported to be interested in a swoop for the Liverpool striker, which suggests that there is enough interest from elsewhere for the Reds to cash in on the £85m flop when the summer transfer window opens for business.

Best signing since Van Dijk: Liverpool struck gold on £150k-p/w "leader"

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 18, 2025

Slot must, now, make it clear to the board that Nunez should be moved on and replaced ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, to ensure that Liverpool have a striker who they can rely on week-in-week-out in the final third next season and beyond.

Kate Cross embraces 'mindset shift' as England Women seek attacking new era

Seamer says aggressive gameplans can give her a second wind at back end of career

Valkerie Baynes02-Dec-2022Kate Cross says England Women are ready to embrace a more aggressive approach under the guidance of new head coach Jon Lewis.Upon linking up with his charges at their training base in Loughborough last week, Lewis revealed he wanted them to play less safe and “walk towards the danger” just as he had seen the England Men’s sides do across formats in his previous role as their elite pace bowling coach. It’s an approach that may come naturally to the younger members of the squad, with the likes of Alice Capsey, Freya Kemp, Issy Wong and Lauren Bell all fearlessly grabbing the international opportunities given to them over the summer during the final months of Lisa Keightley’s three-year tenure as head coach. And while Kate Cross, the 31-year-old seamer, believes it will require a “mindset shift” for the team as a whole, she’s all in.”If you’re not willing to move with the times, then you’re going to get stuck behind anyway,” Cross said from Antigua, where the ODI squad is preparing for the first of three matches against West Indies on Sunday.”I’m not daft, I know that people are going to work out how to face me and how to attack me and that’s ultimately going to put pressure on me. So if I can get ahead of that curve now, then that’s pretty handy for me as a player.”How it looks for me might look very different to how it looks for Freya Kemp or Katherine Brunt. That’s where I think Lewy is going to come in and be really clear with our roles in the team, and what that looks like and what is needed from us.”From a bowling point of view, we’ve got such a big unit now and a really exciting unit, that it will be more how we approach the game as a unit, because it’ll be up to the five or six bowlers that are out there to try and bowl teams out. It’s going to be interesting, but I’m really looking forward to it.”Related

Cross is an admirer of how England Men’s red- and white-ball teams have executed the positive ethos promoted by their respective head coaches, Brendon McCullum and Matthew Mott, reacting on her Instagram stories to an ECB post about the Test team’s feats on the opening day in Pakistan, saying: “Changing the game, this team”. And she said the concept wasn’t completely alien to the Women’s group, who had talked about adopting a similar approach under Keightley and captain Heather Knight over the summer.”Personally for me, it’s a really nice time for this to come in,” she added. “It’s getting that second wind in your career. You don’t want to be the old senior pro that is stuck in their ways and just does what they always do. It feels like a really nice time for me personally as well, to be getting that messaging.”The thing that I’ve noticed with the youngsters is just the lack of fear that they have when they play. That’s probably an element of coming in and making debuts in the Hundred and playing in front of big crowds, and having the opportunity to impress people. Sometimes I think players from my generation could have been doing that, but it was a bit behind the scenes, you weren’t on TV, it wasn’t even live-streamed back then.”Those youngsters are just used to that environment. For me, what is exciting is they don’t really care who’s bowling at them or who they’re bowling at, they just go and do their thing. That’s the making of a really exciting team.”The ODIs in Antigua will form part of the ICC Women’s Championship, in which England are yet to get off the mark following their 3-0 defeat by India in September.Cross is not part of the T20I squad staying on – with Brunt, Lauren Winfield-Hill, Sarah Glenn and Wong joining them – for five matches from December 11. She will return home along with Emma Lamb, Alice Davidson-Richards and Tammy Beaumont after the third ODI in a week’s time but for now she is relishing being back in the Caribbean, where she made her international debut in 2013 and where she came as a youngster herself to watch the men play on the 2004 Test tour.”I remember coming out here as a young kid watching [Steve] Harmison and [Matthew] Hoggard bowling on pitches like this and making West Indian players look silly,” she said. “I also did see Brian Lara get 400, so maybe I shouldn’t say that. But I’m a huge cricket fan, I’ve been lucky to come out here and watch England men play, so it’s great to be back here… it’s a special place for me.”
