Gustavo Henrique rompeu o ligamento cruzado anterior do joelho esquerdo no fim do ano passado, durante partida contra o Sport.

Everton: Benitez wants the ‘next Van Dijk’

Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan has been giving his thoughts on Everton’s reported January transfer plans.

The Lowdown: ‘Next van Dijk’ eyed

According to Football Insider, who were informed by an Everton source, Rafa Benitez wants the Toffees to sign the ‘next van Dijk’ in the New Year.

No specific names are mentioned in the report, but the Spaniard seemingly wants a top-class centre-back to lead his backline.

The Toffees have four senior centre-backs on the books at this moment in time, along with teenager Jarrad Branthwaite, but it appears as if another option is wanted in the winter window.

The Latest: Whelan reacts

Whelan was asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Benitez’s plans. This is what the 46-year-old had to say in reply, believing that the right centre-back option “can win you matches”:

“Everton are sorted in some areas.

“There’s have a real good defensive midfield player there in Allan. They also have the striker position sorted with Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Rondon coming in.

“They got the wingers in Gray and Townsend as well so those areas are sorted. Yes, they did buy some new defenders under Ancelotti.

“But when you look at it, you think that one centre half could be the missing jigsaw piece.

“Look at Liverpool with Van Dijk, Man United with Maguire, City with Dias.

“A player like that can really make the difference. That leadership and quality as a centre half can win you matches.

“That is definitely the right area to improve if you are Everton.”

The Verdict: The right move?

Everton kept 12 clean sheets during the 2020/21 campaign but have just one from their opening five league games this season, so bringing in a marquee defensive addition could make a huge difference in the long run as Whelan has suggested.

Liverpool and Manchester City have reaped the rewards in recent years by bringing in quality defenders in Virgil van Dijk and Ruben Dias, so Everton could follow suit.

That may not make them European challengers straight away, but it could be a solid base in the club’s aspirations to climb the table in years to come.

ICL players to feature in domestic games

The PCB has said it will respect the decision of the Sind High Court in temporarily lifting a ban on Pakistan’s ICL-contracted players from participating in domestic cricket

The PCB has said it will obey the Sind High Court order to temporarily lift the domestic ban on Pakistan’s ICL-contracted players. This effectively allows the 11 affected players to take part in the next round of Quaid-e-Azam trophy matches. The court had temporarily lifted the ban at the first hearing on February 2 but players had not been able to participate in the latest round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy because the order had not been passed on to the various departmental teams involved. The PCB had also not responded to the original verdict, choosing to wait till Wednesday’s second hearing. The hearing was adjourned till February 25 since the judge was unable to attend but Shaan Gul, the PCB’s lawyer, said the 11 players who originally moved the court could play now.”We bow before the order of the court,” Gul told Cricinfo. “The case has been adjourned till February 25th but the players can absolutely take part in domestic cricket as of now.”The bans were imposed under the previous administration and though the players continue to miss out on international cricket, the current board has adopted a more flexible approach. “The present board does not support the manner in which the ban was imposed by the previous administration,” Gul said. The 11 allowed to play domestic gamesMohammad Sami, Abdul Razzaq, Hasan Raza, Shabbir Ahmed, Mohammad Yousuf, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Tahir Mughal, Shahid Yousuf, Khalid Mahmood, Naved Latif and Shahid Nazir.Pakistan has suffered immensely from the policy to exclude ICL players from international cricket. Mohammad Yousuf, who joined the ICL last season, is the biggest loss but the absence of several first-team choices and reserves has depleted resources. Officials have privately spoken of looking at ways to tackle the problem and Javed Miandad even spoke publicly of the pressure to bring back players when he was director-general last year.Ijaz Butt, the board’s chairman, has said a solution remains out of the PCB’s hands. “That is between the ICC and the BCCI and negotiations are still happening. A decision has to come from there,” Butt told reporters in Lahore. “As far as domestic cricket is concerned, the ICC said wherever it is challenged legally they can let them play. If Mohammad Yousuf leaves the ICL, we will take him back tomorrow, but we can’t right now.”Butt also warned of a new, tougher policy on players in unrecognised leagues that the ICC will adopt soon. “The new regulations in place from June 1 are much tougher. Now the ICC can also punish countries directly with fines and sanctions if they let unauthorised players appear.””Banning a player from playing in domestic cricket because he participated in the ICL is not a matter for the ICC,” said an ICC spokesperson. “Instead, only a member board can take such action. The ICC executive board therefore resolved in 2008 that member boards should take such action against ICL players as they considered appropriate, in light of and in accordance with the requirements of their own local laws”.

Celtic: Rocco Vata could be another Dembele

Ange Postecoglou’s promise to Celtic supporters when he first walked through the doors of Parkhead was to give more opportunities to younger players. That was a policy that had deserted Neil Lennon during his final campaign in charge with promising prodigies like Karamoko Dembele failing to earn many regular minutes.Dembele is still yet to feature under the new boss but that has been down to injury, rather than Postecoglou’s selection policy. The Australian has handed chances to Dane Murray and Adam Montgomery, however, as he strives to live up to his opening day insight. It’s an exciting time to be in the Celtic academy with the club’s B team enjoying life in the Lowland League.Owen Moffat is one player who’s really caught the eye at that level, scoring five goals in one game against Vale of Leithen.Another player on the score sheet that day was 15-year-old Rocco Vata as the Bhoys won 10-0.The son of Celtic cult hero Rudi Vata, the teenager is already playing way above his level and is thriving.Unseen in the Celtic first team, Vata has come on leaps and bounds during the 2021/22 campaign. He has also scored against Berwick this term and has featured in the Republic of Ireland youth set up on a regular basis. The youngster is a dynamic winger and based on his tricky qualities, he could become a new Dembele to Celtic.Three years his junior, Vata has made some positive strides in the last few months and is doing everything he can to make a statement to Postecoglou. After finding the net with a powerful effort against Berwick, writer Owen Brown commented: “Vata, at right wing, was a bit more direct, quick and a goal threat.â€Those quick and direct attributes were in evidence when he played for Celtic’s U18s in the Scottish FA Youth Cup vs East Fife.Vata turned his first man with ease and then beat another defender all ends up with pace before supplying a ball to the back post that was fired home.

In that instance, the 15-year-old demonstrated why there is so much hype around him.

He is incredibly quick and he can hold off a defender by using his brute force. If he continues to put in similar performances, a first-team call-up could be on the cards in the future. Vata certainly has the heritage at Parkhead.

Wolves transfer update on Caleta-Car

Many Wolves fans have been left pleading for the Midlands club to sign Duje Caleta-Car as a transfer update emerged.

As per Sky Sports, they are now interested in signing the Marseille ace before the summer window ends, but face an uphill battle to try and convince the player to join, as he wants to play European football.

However, the Ligue 1 team need to sell players before the deadline, and Caleta-Car is currently rated at €20m (£17m).

The Croatia international was a key player for Marseille in France’s top flight in the 2020/21 season, winning no fewer than 3.7 of his duels per game, while he also averaged 3.9 clearances and 1.3 interceptions per match, helping his side keep five clean sheets in the process (Sofascore).

Nonetheless at 24 years of age, he has not hit his peak yet, and could be a solid option for Bruno Lage in the centre of the defence.

Expert hails recent Aston Villa target Pape Matar Sarr

French football expert Adam White has hailed Pape Matar Sarr’s potential after he was linked with a move to Aston Villa, who now look likely to miss out on him.

Villa – along with Everton and Newcastle United – have been rumoured to be courting Sarr, who is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in French football.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea were also thought to tracking the Senegal international with the transfer deadline looming. However, according to Sky Sports, Tottenham are now close to signing the player in a blow to the likes of  Villa and Everton.

Sarr broke onto the scene last season, with the midfielder making 26 appearances for French side Metz. He also contributed in the attacking third of the pitch by finding the back of the net four times.

The 18-year-old has started both of Metz’s Ligue 1 fixtures so far this campaign despite rumours he could be on his way to the Premier League.

Get French Football News’ White had endorsed a Villa move for Sarr’s signature, believing the investment would have paid off in the long-term.

He told Football FanCast: “Sarr is quite a versatile player. He’s got a graceful, languid style and plays the box-to-box role.

“Sarr has got so much going for him at such a young age. He had close to a full season in France, has been consistent and progressed remarkably quickly.

“Sarr has a broad skillset and has so much potential to grow even further.”

Sheffield Utd enter into Robin Olsen talks

Sheffield United have commenced talks regarding a deal to bring Robin Olsen to Bramall Lane this summer.

What’s the talk?

According to reports from Italy, Slavisa Jokanovic’s side have entered into negotiations with AS Roma regarding a season-long loan deal for the 31-year-old goalkeeper.

It is also claimed that Jose Mourinho would be willing to sanction the departure of the Sweden international, in whom the Blades are interested as a result of Aaron Ramsdale’s reported desire to leave the Championship club in favour of a move to Arsenal.

Bye-bye Ramsdale

While losing the services of Ramsdale this summer would undoubtedly come as a significant blow to the Sheffield United manager, it would very much appear to be something of a transfer masterclass by Jokanovic if he secures a deal for Olsen as the 23-year-old’s replacement.

Indeed, the £2.7m-rated goalkeeper impressed over his seven Premier League appearances while on loan at Everton last season, keeping two clean sheets while also conceding an average of just 1.3 goals and making three saves per game.

These metrics saw the man who Sweden team-mate Alexander Isak dubbed an “incredible” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.87, ranking him as the Toffees’ 12th-best performer in the top flight of English football.

The £14k-per-week shot-stopper continued this fine form into Euro 2020. He conceded four goals and kept two clean sheets over his four appearances in the competition, making 2.8 saves per match and earning an average SofaScore match rating of 7.05.

As such, the signing of Olsen would appear to be a big coup for the Blades this summer, with the ‘keeper arguably being at a similar level of ability as Ramsdale, from whom the club look set to make a considerable amount of money by selling.

Should Jokanovic indeed cash in on the Englishman in the coming days, it would be highly advisable for the Serbian manager to do all he can to secure the signing of the Swedish stopper as the 23-year-old’s replacement.

White: Ndombele doesn’t want to leave Tottenham for Lyon return

Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele is not interested in a Lyon return, Get French Football News’ Adam White has told Football FanCast.

Ndombele is Tottenham’s record signing after joining the north London club from Lyon back in 2019 in a deal worth over £50m. However, reports suggest that they could now be looking to get rid of the 24-year-old.

According to ESPN, Spurs have offered Lyon their former player in a swap deal that would see Houssem Aouar head in the other direction.

White, though, has told FFC that Ndombele has no intention of making a return to the Groupama Stadium this summer.

“I think the problem here is Ndombele isn’t interested at all,” the Ligue 1 writer said. “We understand he’s not interested in going back to Lyon at all, so that would probably scupper the whole thing.

“Would Lyon be interested? Possibly, but they’ve got a lot of options in that midfield. I think the only party that would be interested in that deal is probably Tottenham.”

So in regards to signing Aouar in a swap deal, that does not look like it is going to happen, or at least if the player heading the other way is Ndombele.

But with ESPN claiming Lyon only want €25m (£21m) for the Frenchman, a straight cash deal does not look too far out of Spurs’ reach if there is genuine interest.
