Liverpool fans fume over Brazilian news

Many Liverpool fans have been reacting to emerging news that their Brazilian players will not be granted permission to return to England early from international duty.

Brazil have nine Premier League players in their squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela, Columbia and Uruguay, and top flight clubs were hoping that their stars could return earlier than normal so they could feature in the first weekend back.

The Daily Mail have reported today that Brazil have followed Argentina in confirming their players won’t return to England early, news that won’t go down well with Liverpool fans.

Alisson and Fabinho have been called up to Tite’s squad for the upcoming break, with the final game against Uruguay taking place just 35 hours before the return of Premier League football.

This means they will now almost certainly miss the away trip to Watford next Saturday, leaving Jurgen Klopp with a tough choice to make in between the sticks and in midfield.

Spurs handed Oliver Skipp injury boost

Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Santo has received a big injury boost ahead of their return to Premier League action this lunchtime…

What’s the latest?

According to the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, young midfielder Oliver Skipp is hoping to be fit to face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park today after he was forced off with injury during international duty in midweek.

The 20-year-old will be assessed ahead of the match but it’s thought that the injury may not be as bad as first feared, thus opening up the possibility of him retaining his place in the starting XI.

Major boost

This will come as huge encouragement to Nuno and others associated with the club.

The Portuguese head coach is facing a bit of a nightmare situation right now with several of his key stars likely to be unavailable for this encounter, so to have Skipp fit would be a massive boost.

He will be without the services of South American trio Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez, who are all in Croatia to avoid having to quarantine upon their return to the UK following international duty.

Meanwhile, a trio of wingers in Steven Bergwijn, Heung-min Son and Ryan Sessegnon are doubts heading into kickoff, leaving Nuno with a threadbare squad.

That is something he would not have wanted to come back to after the break, considering that his team sit top of the table with a 100% win record. They are yet to concede this season but Sanchez’s absence means that the manager will have to change the backline for the first time since the campaign started.

Having Skipp available in front of the defence will certainly bolster their chances of continuing their fine form.

The Hotspur Way youth product has averaged 2.7 tackles per game this season, a feat only bettered by one other player at the club, so he has clearly made his presence felt in the engine room since being given the opportunity this term.

Nuno will surely be buzzing by this latest update.

Celtic: Rogic costing Postecoglou dearly

Celtic’s worst start to a season for 23 years continued on Sunday afternoon as the Hoops dropped yet more points in their quest to regain the league title.

The Bhoys have shown some promising signs under Ange Postecoglou but ultimately, his team are struggling to adapt to a number of injury problems.

The absence of top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi has clearly hampered their progress, as too has a fitness problem for skipper Callum McGregor.

However, you can’t keep making excuses for poor performances; they did score three goals away at Real Betis with a range of injuries.

Since that match, though, Postecoglou’s side have only scored once in two outings.

They lost to Livingston and then their 1-1 draw with Dundee United at Parkhead was hardly any better.

Albian Ajeti was isolated in attack and despite the best efforts of Liel Abada and Jota, two players who brought flair to the encounter, they couldn’t get over the line.

One player who was disappointing for a third successive outing was James McCarthy. The Irishman was poor in the middle of the park and was substituted at half time having won just 33.3% of his defensive duels.

However, it’s hard to ignore the performance of Tom Rogic either.

The Australian started well under the stewardship of Postecoglou by scoring in the 6-0 rout of Dundee but against the club’s rivals, Dundee United, he was extremely poor.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-celtic-news-duffy-mccarthy-brady-knockaert” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

It caps a run of poor form for the attacking midfielder who hasn’t been at the races over the last few weeks.

As they laboured to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon, the 28-year-old gave away the ball on a relentless basis, surrendering possession on 20 occasions.

That led to a mediocre pass success rate of 71% as Rogic struggled to link defence to attack.

What made the Australia international’s afternoon even worse was the fact he missed a glorious opportunity to score.

He latched onto Jota’s knockdown but rattled the frame of the goal. That was just one of three times that Celtic hit either the post or bar.

Ultimately, Rogic’s creativity and end product deserted him at Parkhead this weekend. Sadly, that has been a regular occurrence for the Celtic man in recent weeks. He needs to improve.

Gers fans rage at ticket problems

Glasgow Rangers fans are livid with the latest struggles they have had in securing away tickets for their Premiership clash against Ross County this weekend.

The Gers have not had the best start to the new season – they have already lost three games, two of which came in the Champions League third qualifying round against Malmo, and once against Dundee United in the Premiership.

They did beat Livingston 3-0 and then Dunfermline 5-0 in the Scottish League Cup, but there is seemingly plenty of work for Steven Gerrard to do to get his team firing on all cylinders.

Of course, having the famous Gers support back on away trips could have a big positive impact, and the next league match comes against Ross County this weekend, with fans desperate to secure tickets for the clash.

However, the supporters have had trouble in doing so and have therefore criticised the club’s ticketing system.

The fans were quick to share their frustration with the ticketing system, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the problems below

Leko has a shocker as Birmingham City lose

Birmingham City’s impressive start to the Championship season received something of a setback on Tuesday evening, as Lee Bowyer saw his side succumb to defeat in their second-round Carabao Cup clash.

While a loss in a competition that is not likely to be high on the 44-year-old’s list of priorities this season, the manner in which the Blues fell to a 2-0 defeat against Fulham could well concern the former Charlton Athletic manager.

Over the course of the 90 minutes, Birmingham failed to muster a single shot on target, had just 39% of possession and completed nearly 200 passes fewer than the visitors.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were a number of disappointing individual performances in the fixture, none more so than by the Blues winger, Jonathan Leko.

Indeed, despite playing for the entirety of the game, the £1.35m-rated man managed no shots at goal, completed just 10 of his 16 attempted passes and touched the ball a grand total of 33 times – nine times fewer than Birmingham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

The 22-year-old also lost possession of the ball on 17 separate occasions, won just three of his 10 duels – a loss percentage of 70% – failed to find his man with either of his one attempted cross or his one attempted long ball and was flagged offside once.

These returns saw the £5.1k-per-week forward earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.2, with no player from either team receiving a score lower than Leko on the night.

As such, considering the fact that the winger has started just one of Birmingham’s four Championship fixtures so far this season, it would very much seem as if the 22-year-old did very little against Fulham to convince Bowyer he is deserving of a starting spot in the 44-year-old’s side to face Barnsley this weekend, as the youngster failed his manager’s trust on Tuesday evening.

Celtic: Aurelio Buta transfer blow emerges

Celtic have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Royal Antwerp right-back Aurelio Buta, according to The Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Buta links

Celtic are on the hunt for a new right-back this summer and have been linked with a move for Buta for a number of weeks.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano was the man who initially shared the Hoops’ interest in the 24-year-old more than three weeks ago.

Reports since have claimed a £3m deal has been agreed between the two clubs, with personal terms believed to be the main issue.

The Latest: Antwerp inclusion

The Daily Record shared an update on Buta to Celtic on their live transfer blog on Saturday (16:16).

They shared the news that the Portuguese defender has been included in Antwerp’s official squad list, titling the news as another blow for the Hoops.

Claims of a deal being agreed between the two clubs were mentioned once again, with personal terms still yet to be agreed.

The Verdict: Time is ticking

Celtic don’t want to be left in a position where a deal for Buta falls through and leaves them with no time to add to their right-back ranks.

Anthony Ralston has been an ever-present figure in Ange Postecoglou’s side recently, so if the Royal Antwerp defender doesn’t want to accept the Hoops’ best offer, then they should move on.

Other right-backs such as Josip Juranovic, George Baldock and Fabricio Bustos have also been linked with a move to Celtic Park, so the Hoops may need to set a deadline for Buta before looking elsewhere.

Spurs fans flock to Aurier talks claim

Flocking to Twitter, many Tottenham Hotspur fans have had their say following Sky Sports’ latest news on defender Serge Aurier.

The Ivorian, signing for Spurs in 2017 as a direct replacement for Kyle Walker, has gone on to make 110 appearances for the club in all competitions – scoring eight goals and assisting 17 others as an attack-minded full-back (Transfermarkt).

However, with the Lilywhites adopting a sell-to-buy policy this summer, Aurier has been one of the most widely tipped Spurs players to leave before August 31.

The 28-year-old admitted himself that he has reached ‘the end of a cycle’ at Tottenham but hasn’t yet been able to secure a move away from N17.

Sky Sports, bringing an update on Aurier’s future, now claim that exit talks for the defender broke down recently over disagreements about his involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations next January.

It’s safe to say supporters have held mixed reactions to this news on social media, with many appearing eager for the player to finally move on.

Leicester linked with Jordan Henderson

Leicester City have become shock contenders to sign Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson this summer after the midfielder’s future was thrown into doubt.

What’s the story?

The 31-year-old dynamo was surprisingly linked with an imminent Anfield exit by The Athletic’s transfer expert David Ornstein in recent days after contract negotiations reached an impasse.

Some of Europe’s biggest clubs were linked with a move as a result, with Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid credited with an interest but now Leicester have entered the conversation.

The Express suggests that both the Foxes and Arsenal have been credited with an interest.

Fans will be buzzing

Henderson’s contract expires in the summer of 2023, but with several other first-team stars also approaching the end of their current deals, he could find himself low down on Liverpool’s priority list.

Since arriving at Anfield a decade ago, the box-to-box midfielder has established himself as a key player for the 19-time English champions, making 392 appearances for the Reds, winning the Premier League title and Champions League crown along the way.

His outstanding leadership qualities and incredible work rate on the pitch have caught the eye of several onlookers, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp publicly praising his captain in the past.

“He is exceptional; he is outstanding. Gini (Wijnaldum) and Hendo, especially, because they have had to play the biggest number of games this season,” said Klopp.

“What they do is just incredible – absolutely incredible. I do not take that for granted for one second. If anybody who is with us still doesn’t see the quality of Jordan Henderson, then I cannot help them.

“Is Hendo the perfect football player? No. Do I know anybody who is? No. But is he unbelievably important to us? Yes.”

However, despite the German tactician’s glowing appraisal of the England international, Liverpool could reportedly be prepared to part ways with the £18m-rated beast over the coming months.

It remains to be seen whether Leicester make a move for Henderson this summer, but the potential arrival of a proven winner with outstanding leadership qualities will surely have the club’s supporters buzzing.

West Brom linked with move for Adam Reach

West Brom are reportedly interested in signing former Sheffield Wednesday winger Adam Reach in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Reach leaves Wednesday

The 28-year-old suffered relegation with the Owls last season, and with his contract at Hillsborough expiring last month, he is currently searching for a new club.

Reach might not be without potential suitors, having scored 31 goals in 306 Championship appearances in his career.

The Latest: West Brom linked with move

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter, Reach is a target for West Brom, as they prepare for life under Valerien Ismael back in the Championship:

“West Brom. Surprise potential squad addition is Adam Reach. Ex Sheff Wed. Also on Blackburn list.”

The Verdict: Good squad player

Reach may not necessarily come in as a guaranteed starter for the Baggies, but he has the quality and experience to more than justify a squad place.

At 28, he is arguably in the peak years of his career and he possesses an eye for the spectacular, having scored some memorable goals for Wednesday down the years.

A powerful player who can thrive both out wide and centrally, Reach could be an intriguing signing by West Brom, as they look to make a swift return to the Premier League.

Villa can sign new Nobby Solano in Dwight McNeil

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith could sign his club’s new Nobby Solano in Burnley winger Dwight McNeil.

What’s the story?

The Telegraph had recentlly claimed that Villa still have McNeil high up on their target list as they look to reinforce their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

And now, Football Insider have suggested that the Midlands club will turn their attentions towards the England U21 international if they can’t get a deal done for Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe.

It’s said that: “A Villa source has told Football Insider that manager Dean Smith is prioritising the capture of a versatile forward capable of operating in various positions across the attack.

“Villa are willing to pay a major fee for McNeil and are expected to submit a bid if they don’t land Smith Rowe.”

Villa’s new Solano

In a piece by The Birmingham Mail back in March on wingers that Villa fans loved to watch, it said of Solano: “Despite being at Villa for just 18 months, he was both player-of-the-season and top scorer, albeit it with eight goals, during his only full campaign. Arriving for £1.5 million from Newcastle in January 2004, his best form under then Villa boss David O’Leary came the following season.

“His winner in a Monday night home match against Tottenham showed off his dexterity as he worked room for an acrobatic finish in a confined six-yard box, while he also curled in a sublime free-kick equaliser against Liverpool at Villa Park and provided a sumptuous finish in a win over Portsmouth.”

And in the equally gifted McNeil, Smith could land a winger just as exciting and with an eye for goal like Solano.

The £34m-rated winger has been one of the few standout players for the Clarets since breaking onto the scene, and it’s something which has led to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp raving about him.

He said: “Dwight McNeil is such a good player, lovely left foot, doesn’t stop running. Every time I watch him he gets better and better, he’s got real quality and certainly a player that the top six to eight clubs will be looking at, and that’s no disrespect to Burnley because I don’t like saying that sometimes, but he is that good.”

With his ability to beat players one-on-one – his average of 1.8 dribbles per game in the Premier League was the highest of any Burnley player last season – McNeil could bring that same kind of flair that Solano brought to the table, with his Burnley boss Sean Dyche a big fan of his development.

He said: “He’s a real talent. He’s a really good player, he’s improving, his calmness at the end – I’m saying get it in the corner – but he cuts in, and his calmness to cross it into a dangerous area, and then gets his reward. Before then, his calmness to dribble out of trouble – he’s a really good player, really good, and he can only mature.”

And like Solano, he can really strike the ball from distance, with four out of his seven Premier League strikes coming from outside the box according to Understat (only one has come inside the six-yard area).

With a penchant for the spectacular – his long-range stunner against Everton is a testament to that – McNeil could be the kind of exciting winger that Solano was at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Villa are now interested in this “unbelievable” star…
