West Ham could land £17m Antonio upgrade who’s outscoring Haaland

West Ham's attacking output has dramatically improved this season and that is down to the club pulling off some astute pieces of recruitment with the well-documented arrivals of James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Mohamed Kudus providing a sprinkling of quality in the final third.

While these are the incremental upgrades that the Hammers desired to elevate them into the mix for European football, the need for a new striker to replace Michail Antonio is still pressing.

How has Michail Antonio performed this season?

Physically, Antonio is everything you'd want in a striker. He's as strong as an ox, makes lung-bursting runs in behind, possesses the turn of pace to beat defenders and is powerful in the air.

Technically, however, the 33-year-old's capabilities are limited and when counting upon him to be the linking player, dropping deeper to receive the ball, Antonio doesn't have the technical qualities in his locker to be able to spray passes for his team and utilise the quality around him to the best of his ability.

mama-balde-michail-antonio-everton-transfer-premier-league

As per FBref, Antonio ranks in the bottom 35% for progressive passes against his positional peers in the Premier League this season, the bottom 27% for pass completion, the bottom 12% for shot-creating actions and the bottom 4% for touches in the attacking penalty box per 90.

In a Moyes counter-attacking system that defends in two banks of four, perhaps the technical qualities of his game aren't required as much, however, clinical finishing certainly is, with the Jamaican falling short in that regard.

He ranks within the bottom 4% for shots totalled per game (1.06), bottom 12% for non-penalty xG (0.70) and in the bottom 27% for goals per 90 (0.30) with a conversion rate of 29% and two big chances missed, according to Sofascore.

With only two goals and one assist in eight appearances for the Hammers this term, it appears that the powers of Antonio could be declining and given he's at the wrong age of 30, replacing him should be high up on the list of priorities in January.

One man who has been linked with a switch to the London Stadium is Europe's most in-form striker, Serhou Guirassy.

How good is Serhou Guirassy?

According to Football Insider, West Ham have emerged as a serious contender in the pursuit of Stuttgart's prolific forward.

The 27-year-old, who is currently setting the Bundesliga alight, has caught the eye of top-flight English clubs.

Since taking the leap to Germany this summer, Guirassy has been on a scorching goal-scoring streak, outshining the likes of Bayern Munich star Harry Kane with a staggering 13 goals in seven Bundesliga appearances.

Sending ripples of excitement throughout the Premier League with his scoring exploits, he could be the formidable striker that Moyes has been on the hunt for to bolster the Hammers' attacking arsenal but also provide the requisite technical attributes to become an exceptional lone forward.

Unlike Antonio, who has struggled with the ball at his feet, the Guinea international has excelled, rivalling Kane with the pinpoint accuracy of his passing attributes.

The "goal machine", as dubbed by the official Bundesliga website, has showcased his technical prowess by placing within the top 5% for short pass completion and the top 15% for key passes, completed passes and goal-creating actions, displaying he'd be a huge upgrade on Antonio.

With a £17m release clause in his Stuttgart contract, as per TEAMtalk, West Ham could snap up one of the best bargains in world football.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The design of the adidas Copa boot features the colours of his nation, red, white and blue. That detailing is joined by an embellished '50 caps' message on the side, as well as the national flag positioned across the soleplate of the boot. Three Lions legend Lampard, who racked up 106 caps during his international career, was on hand to present the one-of-a-kind boots and chat to Rice about his achievement.

  • WHAT WAS SAID

Lampard said of Rice reaching the 50-cap milestone: "Declan shouldn’t underestimate this achievement, every kid playing football growing up dreams of playing for their country, so to hit 50 caps is something very special. I am excited to see what the summer brings for him and this young team going into the Euros."

Rice, too, recognised the significance of reaching 50 international appearances at 25 years old. He added: "It is a massive achievement for me to reach this milestone. Those close to me, know how much playing for my country means, so to hit 50 caps is incredible. I am excited to wear my new boots on the field to celebrate the moment.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR RICE?

While his England captaincy role is only temporary – at least for now – Rice revealed that he would be putting his leadership skills to use with fellow Arsenal star Ben White. The defender made himself unavailable for selection to Gareth Southgate for the March friendlies, but Rice says he will try and talk to his club team-mate to change his mind.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After arriving shortly after the start of the MLS season, the son of Real Madrid legend Fernando Redondo signed with the Herons on a multi-year deal that saw them send a fee of $8 million to Argentinos Juniors.

He made four appearances across all competitions for the Herons before joining the the Albiceleste U-23's for the March international break, but upon his return he suffered the problem. In a release, Miami said: "Redondo has suffered an injury to his left lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A silky midfielder on the ball, Redondo was ironically labelled a Sergio Busquets regen before his arrival at South Beach, where he's now teammates with the Spanish legend.

The 21-year-old's injury, which could see him sidelined for two months, will force the ex-Barcelona great to step up even more. However, the timing of Redondo's absence aligns with the return of another star off the injury table, with USMNT prospect Benjamin Cremaschi returning to first-team training this past week. Regardless, Redondo's absence will be felt, and it's now up to Busquets to occupy the defensive midfielder role for the Herons until his return.

    WHAT NEXT FOR INTER MIAMI?

The Herons host NYCFC this weekend in Eastern Conference action, and with both Redondo and Lionel Messi sidelined, Inter Miami will be without two of their biggest stars. However, a new arrival at the South Beach club this week in defender Marcelo Weigandt could spark them to life at the weekend.

"In contention…" – Sheff Wed hero could return from injury vs Rotherham

Sheffield Wednesday face a massive Championship clash this weekend, and reliable journalist Joe Crann has dropped some key injury news regarding one Owls hero.

Sheffield Wednesday injury news

Danny Rohl has had a tough start to life as Wednesday's new manager, coming in with them bottom of the table and desperately trying to pick up points in the relegation battle.

The 34-year-old has lost his first two matches in charge, away to Watford and Plymouth Argyle, and while there have been some positive signs in those performances, points simply must start to be gained if the Owls are to avoid a speedy return to League One.

On Sunday afternoon, Rohl's side welcome Rotherham to Hillsborough for a massive clash at the bottom of the table, with victory essential for the hosts, in what is the manager's first home match in charge.

Injuries certainly haven't helped so far this season, with a host of key players missing at different points, whether it be influential midfield duo Barry Bannan and George Byers or new signing Juan Delgado. Thankfully, Wednesday look set to be boosted by the return of one popular figure this weekend, though.

Callum Paterson injury update

Writing on X, The Sheffield Star's Joe Crann said that Callum Paterson could return for Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday lunchtime, having overcome his injury problems:

"The Scot is back in contention for SWFC, and Wednesday have no fresh injury concerns as they prepare to face Rotherham United this weekend."

This is great news for Wednesday, with Paterson something of a cult figure during his time at Hillsborough, playing his part in them returning to the Championship last season.

The Scot may not be the most talented player at the Owls' disposal, but he gets every ounce out of his ability, and his versatility allows him to shine across numerous positions, which will surely appeal to Rohl. Darren Moore was clearly a fan of his before he left, too, once saying of him:

"He works so tirelessly and is an important member of the team. He adds so much versatility. He has played in midfield, defence and up front this season."

It would arguably be a surprise if Paterson came straight back into Wednesday's starting lineup against Rotherham, however, considering he missed the 3-0 defeat away to Plymouth with a leg issue.

That being said, his industry and heart could be ideal off the bench for what could be a feisty clash at Hillsborough, and it would be just like him to come up with a key contribution just when Owls supporters need it.

The importance of Wednesday picking up all three points against Rotherham cannot be played down this weekend, considering they are already 11 points adrift of Huddersfield Town in 21st place, who sit just above the relegation zone.

Failure to win, and especially a defeat, could leave Rohl with an enormous uphill task in the coming months, whereas victory at Hillsborough could signal the start of an exciting new era at the club.

Ranking the 11 best Tottenham Hotspur vs Chelsea matches of all time

The Premier League is chock-full of fantastic rivalries; whether it is the Manchester derby, the Merseyside derby, the North London derby or the west London derby, we are never more than a few weeks away from another tasty encounter between bitter enemies in the English top flight.

However, when it comes to real, genuine rivalries, few are more heated than the one between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Whether they’re fighting to reach a cup final, fighting for the top four, or fighting for nothing more than pride, you can be guaranteed that when these two sides line up against one another, it’s going to be a cracker.

With that in mind, we have created a list of the top 10 games between Tottenham and Chelsea.

Mal Donaghy 29′

Steve Sedgley 17′

Mark Stein 33′

Jason Dozzell 18′

John Spencer 40′

Andy A Gray 72′ Penalty

Mark Stein 89′ Penalty

The first entry on our list takes us back to 1994 when Tottenham travelled to Stamford Bridge, and nothing more than pride was on the line.

The first half was about as action-packed as it could have been, with Spurs finding themselves two goals up by the 20th minute before the Blues responded with three goals of their own to take the lead going into the break.

Tottenham pressed hard for an equaliser in the second half and finally found one when Andy Gray scored from the spot in the 72nd minute. The Lilywhites were then awarded another penalty just minutes later, but this time it was saved.

As the game reached its dramatic conclusion Chelsea were also awarded a penalty, and with just a minute left on the clock, Make Stein tucked it away, scoring his second of the day and securing the win for his side.

The Blues force a replay

Frank Lampard 71′

Michael Essien 28′ OG

Salomon Kalou 86′

Hossam Ghaly 36′

In March 2007, Chelsea played host to Tottenham in what has to be one of the most exciting FA Cup quarter-finals of all time.

The Blues were the firm favourites ahead of the game, not only because they had home advantage but because they had finished second in the league the previous season and were once again in a title race with Manchester United this season.

So, when the Lilywhites took an early lead through Dimitar Berbatov, the crowd was shocked. Despite the initial setback, Frank Lampard pulled his side level in the 22nd minute, although Spurs were ahead again just six minutes later thanks to an own goal from Michael Essien.

To add insult to injury, Tottenham added a third before halftime when Hossam Ghaly got on the end of Aaron Lennon’s brilliant cross in the 36th minute. It looked like the north Londoners were heading for a historic win.

However, unwilling to see one of their biggest rivals progress to the semi-finals at their expense, Chelsea came out like a different team in the second half and showed why they were the side battling for a title.

Lampard scored his second of the game in the 71st minute before Salomon Kalou finally restored parity with his strike in the 86th minute. Tottenham were forced to settle for a replay a week later, but with their morale shattered, they lost that game 2-1, and Chelsea went on to win the whole thing two months later.

Then manager Jose Mourinho was delighted with how his team fought back, telling the BBC: “The team’s character, spirit and belief are very important.

“The players’ mentality was very, very good. We were almost out of the FA Cup when we were two goals down but at the end we are still in the competition.”

The Cockney Cup Final

1967 – Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea

Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea

Jimmy Robertson 40′

Bobby Tambling 85′

Frank Saul 67′

We are going even further back for our next entry on the list, all the way back to the 1967 FA Cup Final, to be exact.

The final between Chelsea and Tottenham was the first FA Cup Final to be contested by two London teams and was nicknamed the Cockney Cup Final. It’s this game, a game watched by around 100,000 fans, that many credit the bitter rivalry between the two teams to.

The game itself wasn’t a particularly close affair, with Spurs finding themselves two goals to the good in the 67th minute and Chelsea not opening their account until the 85th minute.

We wonder what the relationship between the two sides would be like today had they not met in that final almost sixty years ago.

A goal line scandal crushes Tottenham hopes

2012 – Chelsea 5-1 Tottenham

Chelsea 5-1 Tottenham

Didier Drogba 43′

Gareth Bale56′

Juan Mata 49′

Ramires 77′

Frank Lampard 81′

Florent Malouda 90′

It’s hard to take a refereeing mistake against your team at the best of times, but it’s a whole other kettle of fish in a semi-final. Unfortunately for Spurs, this is exactly what they had to deal with in the FA Cup semi-final match against Chelsea in 2012.

With the score 1-0 thanks to a 43-minute strike from Didier Drogba, Chelsea added a second through Spanish playmaker Juan Mata, except they didn’t, not really.

Mata’s shot didn’t actually cross the line, but with his view clearly compromised, referee Martin Atkinson still gave the West Londoners the goal anyway.

Gareth Bale pulled one back for the Lillywhites, but the damage was done, and the demoralised side shipped another three goals, ultimately losing 5-1.

In an interview after the game, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp didn’t hide his feelings, saying: “Did he guess? He must have. He can’t have been sure.

“He’s just made a mistake, unfortunately. I spoke to him. He says he feels worse than I do. I said: “I don’t think so”. But he says he feels bad. He knows he’s made a mistake, and he says he’ll have a bad week as well.

“There’s nothing we can do now. The second goal was a disaster, nowhere near a goal. An honest mistake, but nowhere near over the line. I don’t see how he can give it.”

Chelsea deny Spurs an all north London FA Cup Final

2017 – Chelsea 4-2 Tottenham

Chelsea 4-2 Tottenham

Willian 5′

Harry Kane 18′

Willian 43′ Penalty

Dele Alli 52′

Eden Hazard 75′

Nemanja Matić 80′

With Tottenham’s trophy drought reaching almost a decade in 2017, fans were pinning all their hopes on the team’s run in the FA Cup; the only problem was that Chelsea lay in their way in the semi-final.

Going into the game, Chelsea were clear favourites as they were on the cusp of winning the league, while Spurs languished around fifth place, ultimately missing out on the Champions League.

However, league position mattered little once the game started as Spurs gave as good as they got for large parts of the game. The Blues opened the scoring in the fifth minute through Willian, but Spurs equalised just 13 minutes later through Harry Kane.

Chelsea then took the lead in the 43rd minute, once again through Willian, and just like with the first goal, Tottenham responded quickly with a 52nd-minute goal from Dele Alli.

However, while the Lilywhites fought valiantly, the quality of Chelsea finally shone through, and a 75th-minute goal from Hazard, followed by a thunderbolt from Nemanja Matic five minutes later, sealed the victory for the Blues and robbed Tottenham of the chance to play Arsenal in an FA Cup final.

Alli and Eriksen help Spurs to break unwanted record

2018 Chelsea 1-3 Tottenham

Chelsea 1-3 Tottenham

Alvaro Morata 30′

Christian Eriksen 45′

Dele Alli 62′

Dele Alli 66′

When Spurs travelled to Stamford Bridge on April 1st 2018, most fans of the club would have been happy with a point, not because the Blues were miles better than them or anything like that, but simply because Tottenham had not won a game at the ground in 28 years.

So, when Alvaro Morata opened the scoring in the 30th minute, most fans sort of expected the game to once again go Chelsea’s way. However, a 45th-minute equalizer from Christian Eriksen once again injected some life into the encounter.

With the scores level, it would take Tottenham’s Dele Alli to break the deadlock, which he did in style.

Within the space of four minutes, the Englishman had tripled his side’s score and given them that elusive away win at Stamford Bridge.

5

Chelsea extend Spurs' trophy drought

2015 – Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

John Terry 45′

Diego Costa 56′

Six years after Tottenham’s previous League Cup Final appearance and seven after they last faced Chelsea in the showpiece event, they again faced off against the Pensioners for the title in March 2015.

However, unlike last time, it was the Blues that emerged victorious, and it wasn’t particularly close, either.

Chelsea took the lead on the stroke of halftime as Terry pounced on a deflected shot before Costa added a second in the 56th minute, although the Spaniard’s shot came off of Kyle Walker’s back before going into the net.

4

Harry Kane brace welcomes in the Pochettino era

2015 – Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Harry Kane 30′

Diego Costa 18′

Danny Rose 44′

Eden Hazard 61′

Andros Townsend 45′ Penalty

John Terry 87′

Harry Kane 52′

Nacer Chadli 78′

Going into their encounter on January 1st, 2015, Tottenham had not beaten their West London opponents in the Premier League for almost five years.

So, there was an expectation that new boss Pochettino was about to suffer the same fate as the men before him: a home loss to the Blues.

However, the Argentinian and his band of attacking players had other ideas.

Despite the visitors taking an early lead through an 18th-minute Diego Costa goal, the Lillywhites were 4-1 up after just 52 minutes.

The Blues did fight back with a 61st-minute strike from Hazard, but a fifth Spurs goal in the 78th minute secured the win for the hosts and rendered John Terry’s 87th-minute goal nothing more than a consolation.

3

Woodgate wins the League Cup

2008 – Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea

Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea

Dimitar Berbatov 70′ Penalty

Didier Drogba 39′

Jonathan Woodgate 94′

Now, most of the cup games on this list have gone the way of the Blues, but the 2008 League Cup Final is a game that is remembered very fondly in N17 and remains the club’s most recent trophy.

Going into the game, Spurs were understandably the underdogs given Chelsea’s recent successes, but that didn’t seem to phase the players at all, as even when they went a goal down in the 39th minute, they never once gave in.

It would be a 70th-minute Dimitar Berbatov penalty that brought the Lilywhites level, and with the game going to extra time, it felt inevitable that more penalties would be required to find a winner.

That was until Jonathan Woodgate stood up.

The former Real Madrid defender was the only one to get his head to a freekick in the Chelsea box, and while Petr Cech got a glove to the ball, it bounced back into Woodgate’s head and into the Blues’ goal.

It might not have been the prettiest way to win a final, but it was effective and gave Spurs fans a brilliant day out in northwest London.

White Hart Lane thriller derails Chelsea's title hopes

2008 Tottenham 4-4 Chelsea

Tottenham 4-4 Chelsea

Jonathan Woodgate 12′

Didier Drogba 3′

Dimitar Berbatov 61′

Michael Essien 20′

Tom Huddlestone 75′

Joe Cole 52′

Robbie Keane 88′

Joe Cole 80′

Chelsea travelled to White Hart Lane in April 2008 in the midst of an intense title race with Manchester United and, as such, could not afford to drop a single point.

Unfortunately for them, Spurs were well up for the challenge and still coming off the high of their League Cup triumph just a month before.

In an attempt to silence the crowd, Chelsea found the back of the net in just the third minute but only held the lead for nine minutes before Woodgate, the hero of the previous month’s final, levelled the score.

However, this parity lasted just eight minutes as Michael Essien once again fired the Blues in front.

The visitors doubled their lead after the break when Joe Cole found the back of the net, but not happy to just watch, Tottenham once again levelled the score thanks to Berbatov and Tom Huddlestone.

With ten minutes to go, Chelsea once again found themselves ahead thanks to a second goal from Cole, but just as they had the previous three times, the hosts found an equaliser, this time through Robbie Keane, who fired home a brilliant long-range effort in the 88th minute.

While the draw did little for Tottenham come the end of the season, it cost Chelsea the title as they finished the campaign two points off United in top spot.

    WHAT MARTINO SAID ABOUT MESSI

Inter Miami boss Tata Martino told reporters afterwards when asked for an update on Messi: “What Leo did is what he always does, how he affects our team, all his team-mates, the fans, and the most important thing is he felt comfortable, he felt good, he felt loose, and that’s why it’s a shame to have to give up two points.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi had not figured for club or country since March 13 due to a hamstring complaint, with no risks being taken on the Argentine as Inter Miami look to compete on multiple fronts. Martino added on having the all-time great back after testing MLS and CONCACAF Champions Cup fixtures: “We know it was a risk for him to play the first game against Monterrey. We knew, well we planned, because there are variables, that he would play some minutes today. We thought 30-45 minutes. He felt good. This helps us to arrive at the game (against Monterrey) next Wednesday with more confidence regarding his injury.”

Carlos & Kamara miss out in Aston Villa’s predicted lineup vs Fulham

Aston Villa are back in action in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, as Unai Emery’s side welcome Fulham to Villa Park on match day 12 of the 2023/24 season.

The Villans will be desperate to get back to winning ways in the league, and after securing three valuable points in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night, the Midlands club will bid to get their form rolling once more.

Emery made four changes to the squad that lost to Nottingham Forest in the league to face AZ Alkmaar in the Conference League, with a similar rotation expected ahead of Sunday’s clash.

Here is Villa's predicted lineup vs Fulham and those three alterations from the midweek triumph…

1

GK – Emiliano Martinez

Holder of the 2023 Yashin Trophy, World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez will remain between the sticks for Villa against Fulham. The 31-year-old had a shaky performance during the defeat to Forest, however his quality outside of the mishap is irreplaceable.

2

LB – Lucas Digne

lucas-digne-aston-villa-chelsea-unleash-alex-moreno

Despite the return of Alex Moreno from injury, Lucas Digne started against AZ and was a continual threat down the left side thanks to his dynamic progressive ability.

Although the Frenchman displays his defensive frailties due to his direct nature when getting forward at full-back, highlighted by him losing possession 20 times vs Forest, his presence down the flank is hard to replace.

No player in the Villa squad averages a higher rate of key passes per game than Digne this season, with the former Everton ace recording an average of two per game in the 2023/24 Premier League, via WhoScored.

3

CB – Pau Torres

Summer capture Pau Torres will almost certainly reclaim his spot in central defence following the rotation mid-week. The Spaniard was forced into action in the dying embers against AZ to replace Diego Carlos.

The Brazilian was forced to withdraw due to a minor injury, making Torres' claim to start against Fulham undeniable.

4

CB – Ezri Konsa

ezri-konsa-aston-villa

Against AZ, Ezri Konsa assumed the right-back position in place of Matty Cash, and is likely to rejoin forces with Torres in central defence as he has done in the Premier League this term.

With an average pass completion rate of 93.3% per game, only Tyrone Mings – who has played just 31 minutes of the season – tops the charts at Villa in that area, reinforcing Konsa’s reliability at the back.

Clement Lenglet will be the player to make way for Konsa’s return to central defence, after starting against AZ alongside Carlos on Thursday.

5

RB – Matty Cash

matty-cash-aston-villa-injury-poland

During his pre-match press conference ahead of the AZ clash, Emery revealed that Cash had recovered from a small injury he sustained against Forest last weekend.

The 26-year-old is expected to be restored to the starting XI after starting on the bench in midweek, adding a host of attacking threat to the final third at right-back.

6

CM – Douglas Luiz

Leon-bailey-jhon-duran-douglas-luiz-aston-villa

Douglas Luiz also started on the bench in midweek, yet the reported Arsenal target will seemingly make his return to the XI to face Fulham.

The £75k-per-week Brazilian was lauded for his “magic” moment to assist Ollie Watkins’ winning goal vs AZ on Thursday by journalist John Townley, with his place in the squad irreplaceable as his magnificent form continues.

7

CM – Youri Tielemans

Youri Tielemans in Astom Villa training

Pairing Luiz is typically Boubacar Kamara, yet the latter man did not enjoy his best outing in Europe this week, notably missing a gilt-edged chance to score and losing possession on ten occasions.

As such, Youri Tielemans could well keep his place in the centre of the park following an 'encouraging display' last time out, as per BirminghamLive's Townley, with the aim now for the summer signing to cement his place in the side moving forward.

8

RW – John McGinn

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn.

One of the most reliable players in Emery’s side is club captain, John McGinn, who will continue to occupy the left side in the Spaniard’s free-flowing midfield four.

To portray his consistency of high performances, the Scotsman hasn’t received a Sofascore match rating lower than 7.1 in the Premier League since September, cementing himself as a well-rounded player in the squad.

With two goals and two assists to his name already this season, the 29-year-old could be one to watch against the Cottagers due to his ability to cover significant ground and pop up in unexpected areas to help his team.

9

LW – Leon Bailey

Leon Bailey’s assist against AZ this week took his contribution to goals to five in his last five games for Villa, surely warranting him a starting spot in the Premier League over Nicolo Zaniolo.

The Jamaican has only started two league games so far this campaign, scoring three goals and claiming two assists, with the Italian still waiting to contribute in the final third to strengthen Bailey’s claim to start against Marco Silva's side.

10

ST – Moussa Diaby

Aston Villa winger Moussa Diaby.

Making up one-half of the strike partnership is Moussa Diaby, who started his first Conference League game of the season against AZ.

The forward has impressed since arriving in the Midlands from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window, forming an electrifying partnership with Watkins to see his playmaking and clinical streak in front of goal exploited.

With three goals and three assists so far in the league, the Frenchman will be one for Fulham to revise thoroughly, with only Digne averaging more key passes than the 24-year-old with 1.9 per game, via WhoScored.

Eva Gaetino: The USWNT Olympic hopeful eyeing a Champions League final with PSG

The 21-year-old grew up as an aspiring forward who idolised Alex Morgan, but a late switch of positions means she's now a potential star in defense

When Eva Gaetino was growing up as an aspiring young forward, Alex Morgan was her idol. She couldn’t help but laugh, then, when talking about her first camp with the United States women’s national team, in which she was often the center-back locked in a duel with one of her country’s greatest ever goal-scorers.

Gaetino spent her early years in soccer as a No.9 or a No.10, but that all changed when she went to college. At Notre Dame, she moved into defense, and it is in her new role that she has broken into the professional game, signing for Paris Saint-Germain in January before getting her first USWNT call-up in April.

To be on the same roster as Morgan was “a dream come true” for the 21-year-old, who admired the two-time world champion as a young girl not just for her “incredible” talent, but for using soccer to fight for what she believed in. But to be there as someone that the 34-year-old was battling against in training, as opposed to working with to score goals, was certainly surreal. “It was definitely one of those moments where you’re just like, ‘What is happening right now?’” Gaetino recalled with a chuckle.

The young center-back must have had a few of those ‘pinch yourself’ moments by now in a year which has taken her to one of the biggest clubs in France, the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-finals and a USWNT camp. She’ll need to get used to the feeling, though, because Gaetino looks set for a big future at the very top of the game.

    Where it all began

Gaetino was born into a family that already had links to soccer, her mother having played the sport at Virginia Tech. That had an influence on her older brother, who would go on to play at Bucknell University, and she followed suit when she started participating in organized soccer at the age of two.

Throughout her teenage years, Gaetino shone for the Michigan Hawks in the Elite Clubs National League, winning a national championship in 2017 and a whole heap of individual accolades, which included the Midwest Player of the Year award in 2019.

Unsurprisingly, she was a top-rated college recruit and she continued to thrive at Notre Dame, even with the switch from the forward line to defense. During her four years in Indiana, Gaetino was a two-time First Team All-American, a two-time Hermann Trophy semi-finalist and a two-time ACC Defender of the Year.

    The big break

Gaetino was expected to be a top pick in January’s NWSL Draft after such an impressive college career, but she opted for a different path. Through adidas, she had some training opportunities at the facilities of Real Madrid and Lyon, and found the soccer culture in Europe “amazing”. Soon enough, she secured a trial at PSG and knew that was where she wanted to be.

“I just immediately felt like it was a place where I would grow tremendously and that it would take me to the next level, so when I got an offer to play here, I knew I couldn't turn it down,” she explained.

    How it's going

Gaetino only made her PSG debut in mid-February, but she's already had a telling impact at the club, becoming a regular starter almost immediately and netting her first goal in the first leg of the UWCL quarterfinal clash with Hacken.

“I've rarely seen anyone, at that age, come to a different country where they don't speak the language, and be that settled within like a week,” team-mate Jackie Groenen said this week. “She's been doing ridiculously well. She's got the talent, she's got the calmness that we needed in the back as well. She brought us a bit of extra depth there and she's been doing great.”

Gaetino's performances haven’t gone unnoticed across the pond either, earning her that maiden USWNT call-up for the SheBelieves Cup in April, though her senior international debut is still to come.

    Biggest strengths

There’s a lot to like about Gaetino’s game. A towering presence with great strength, she has all the physical attributes to be a top center-back, and she believes her previous experience further up the pitch has helped her adapt to the new role, too, with her certainly boasting a good understanding of what a forward will look to do.

Gaetino’s attacking instincts are also a real asset when she is in possession. When she picks up the ball, she always looks to break the lines, whether that is with her passing or a driving run forward. “I think that I offer a very attack-minded perspective on the game,” she noted. “I feel as if that differentiates me from some other center-backs.”

But to talk to the 21-year-old is to realise that her attitude, her mentality and her desire to learn are all really positive traits as well, the kinds of which are not apparent by simply watching her on the pitch. Gaetino prepares in detail for her matches, and she also values the use of film highly.

“I watched a lot of film when I initially was transitioning into the center-back position. I primarily would watch Virgil van Dijk from Liverpool. I really like the way that he defends, and he's also very tall like me, so seeing how he uses his physical abilities and trying to mimic that,” she explained.

“One of the best things that helps me learn is watching my film immediately after I play. I have an idea in my mind of what I was seeing on the field and then also having a bird's eye view of what was actually going on and where the spaces were, so that when I'm in those situations again, I know what's going on and what the field actually looks like, instead of what's directly in front of me.”

Liverpool’s 4/10 dud with fewer touches than Alisson was Klopp’s villain vs City

Liverpool kept their Premier League title hopes alive by coming back to secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester City this afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp was hoping he could build on their 3-0 victory over Brentford prior to the International break, yet it didn’t take long for Erling Haaland to open the scoring for the hosts, becoming the player to reach 50 Premier League goals in the fewest games in the process.

The Reds had their chances during the tie, with Darwin Nunez being guilty of missing a few, but they roared back in the second half and Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the equaliser with just ten minutes of normal time remaining.

The result will give Klopp a major confidence boost, yet a few players weren’t quite at the races, most notably Nunez.

Darwin Núñez’s game vs Man City in numbers

Throughout his spell on the pitch, the striker only managed to take 23 touches, which was 34 fewer than Alisson in goal, proving he was often isolated through the middle.

The Uruguayan was also a lightweight in terms of one-on-one battles against City this afternoon, winning just one duel out of seven contested, as well as losing possession six times.

While he did manage four shots in total during the tie, only one was on target, and he even missed a big chance, something which is becoming quite a recurring theme, having been unsurprisingly branded a measly 4/10 match rating, as per GOAL's Tom Maston.

He could have made all the difference against a resolute City defence today, yet Nunez was poor and turned into Klopp’s main villain in a match where three points could have turned the tables in the title race.

Darwin Núñez’s season in numbers

The 24-year-old has actually enjoyed a solid start to the campaign, finally delivering on the hype that was generated surrounding his arrival last summer.

Across all competitions, he has managed to find the back of the net on seven occasions, grabbing six assists in the process and the City clash was only the fifth time in the league this season that he didn’t register a goal or an assist, indicating how consistent he has been.

Liverpool's Darwin Nunez.

Nunez also ranks first across the whole Liverpool squad for shots on target per game (1.4) in the top flight, along with ranking third for big chances created (four), yet he tops the pile for big chances missed with 11 and this is clearly something that needs to be worked on.

Liverpool could replace Diaz with move for “world-class” £87m star

The Anfield side could face losing their Colombian maverick following links to a European giant.

His lack of ruthlessness in front of goal was highlighted against Pep Guardiola's side and if he wants to take that next step, his finishing must improve.

Liverpool have a sublime talent who has certainly settled in at Anfield following a rough debut campaign, but there are a few kinks to iron out and, hopefully, Klopp is the man to do just that.

Darwin Nunez

The draw against the champions will invigorate the Anfield side and prove they can mix it with the big boys on any given day.

Now, more consistency must be added and if they can head into the festive season within touching distance, Liverpool could perhaps win a second Premier League crown.
