Thomas Partey to start? Arsenal team news and predicted XI vs Leeds United

The Gunners have some injury doubts ahead of their Premier League clash with Leeds United on Saturday

Arsenal host Leeds United on Saturday as they continue in their quest to win a first Premier League title since 2004.

The Gunners go into the weekend sitting eight points clear of Manchester City at the top, but Pep Guardiola’s side do have a game in hand.

So victory is vital for Arsenal, as they look to maintain their momentum in the title race.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, GOAL takes a look at how things are shaping up in Mikel Arteta's squad.

    Arsenal team news

Thomas Partey is expected to be fit despite having to sit out Ghana’s game against Angola on Monday. Sources close to the player say his absence was precautionary and that he will be available, although Arsenal will make a late call on the midfielder. The extent of WilliamSaliba’s back injury, which forced him to miss the game against Crystal Palace before the international break, is still not fully known, but the defender is set to miss the game against Leeds. It is not clear how long he will be sidelined for and Arsenal will not take any risks over the France International, especially as Rob Holding came in and played well in the 4-1 success over Palace. Arsenal will be without Mohamed Elneny (knee), Eddie Nketiah (ankle) and Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee). The Gunners hope Kieran Tierney will be fit, despite taking a knock while playing for Scotland against Spain on Tuesday.

    Talking point

Will this be the game Gabriel Jesus gets his first Premier League start since November? Mikel Arteta eased the Brazilian back into things before the international break as he didn’t want to take any risks with the frontman following such a long spell on the sidelines. But Jesus has now had another fortnight of training and will be desperate to come in from the start this weekend. That would most likely mean Leandro Trossard dropping to the bench, however, which would be a bit harsh given the form he has been in. So it’s a tough choice for Arteta, but a good one to have.

  • Getty

    Key man

It has to be Bukayo Saka. Arsenal's explosive winger has been in superb form of late, scoring twice against Palace before the international break and then starring for England in their win against Ukraine. Saka is such an influential player for Arsenal and he scored the winner against Leeds at Elland Road earlier in the season. If he performs well again on Saturday, then Arteta’s side will have a great chance of taking all three points.

    What has Arteta said?

Arsenal’s manager believes his side will do whatever it takes to win the title over these final 10 games. “We cannot control the outcome of other clubs," Arteta said. "What we can control is what we do every single day. Now it has to be about enjoying the last part of the season with a real hunger to continue to do what we’ve done and if possible, better.”

Harry Kane, Mason Mount and the 10 players Man Utd are most likely to sign in the 2023 summer transfer window

Even after a strong debut campaign under Erik ten Hag, United have plenty of work to do this summer to become credible title contenders

Manchester United gave plenty of support to Erik ten Hag in the transfer market last summer, and after a fine first season, they must back him again to capitalise on all the progress that has been made. Despite finishing third in the Premier League and making it to the Carabao and FA Cup finals, weaknesses in the squad have been laid bare by some heavy beatings, particularly away from home.

United will be looking to sign a world-class striker, an attacking midfielder, a goalkeeper and another centre-back so they can truly compete with Manchester City next season and try to land a first league title in 11 years.

GOAL takes a look at the players most likely to head to Old Trafford this summer…

  • Getty

    Mason Mount (Chelsea)

Mount could well be United's first signing of the summer after the Red Devils accelerated a move for the midfielder, who is heading into the final year of his contract with Chelsea.

He has had an injury-ravaged season but a fresh start at a now stable United could serve him well, and he would give Ten Hag's side an extra edge in midfield, easing the burden on Bruno Fernandes and giving the team more energy than Christian Eriksen is able to offer.

  • Getty

    Harry Kane (Tottenham)

Kane is the player United want to sign more than anyone else. There could not be a better guarantee of goals and assists than the man who has become Tottenham and England's record scorer and is on course to break Alan Shearer's Premier League scoring record.

The England captain would also raise standards in the dressing room and allow them to take the next step in their transformation under Ten Hag. Kane wants to leave Tottenham after a horrendous season and has done nothing to quash the speculation as he moves into the final year of his contract.

However, Daniel Levy resisted Kane's move to Manchester City in 2021 and the chairman will be the biggest obstacle to getting a deal over the line, demanding a fee in the region of £100 million despite the contract situation.

  • Getty

    Neymar (Paris Saint-Germain)

Neymar's popularity at PSG has sunk to an all-time low and he is searching for a new club. United are one of the few clubs that could afford the Brazilian, who remains the most expensive player in the world following his £191 million move from Barcelona in 2017.

PSG have offered Neymar to United and Ten Hag has not denied that the club are interested, remarking at a press conference last week: "When we have news we'll tell you."

Neymar's injury record and his attitude problems might well concern United fans, but when fit he is still one of the most thrilling and decisive players in the world. He has scored 118 goals and provided 77 assists in 173 matches for PSG, averaging more than a goal contribution per game.

    Declan Rice (West Ham)

Rice is ready to leave West Ham after five excellent years of service and United have shown interest in him for a long time. They would have been even more determined after Rice produced a dominant performance in West Ham's victory over United last month.

They face a battle with Arsenal to get hold of the England midfielder and he will cost at least £80 million. But United could have one thing in their favour: Rice is best friends with Mount, and if the Chelsea midfielder completes a move to Old Trafford then there would be an extra incentive for the West Ham captain to follow him there.

Troy Deeney, Connor Wickham and the 10 strikers Wrexham could sign to cover for Paul Mullin after top scorer suffers punctured lung

Preparations for Wrexham's first season back in the Football League since 2008 have hit a snag, with their man suffering a grizzly injury

Wrexham were enjoying a dream summer. A tour of the United States had brought them closer to their legions of American fans and they'd even had the chance to square off against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United.

However, in that latter game, the Dragons suffered a crushing blow. With just over 10 minutes on the clock at the Snapdragon Stadium, United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop came rushing out to contest a loose ball, smashing into Paul Mullin's hip in the process. Mullin immediately looked in serious pain.

At full-time, Wrexham's worst fears were confirmed when Phil Parkinson revealed that his star striker had suffered a punctured lung. It would not be controversial to describe Mullin as the Dragons' best player. He did score 38 goals last season, after all.

It's not yet clear just how much football Mullin will miss, but the injury normally takes around six to eight weeks to fully heal. In the short term, Wrexham do have players who can fill in, but it would not be a surprise to see Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds dip into the transfer market before the season starts, having only made one signing so far this summer.

If they do opt to go down this route, GOAL has collated a list of potential new recruits:

  • Getty

    Gareth Bale

These rumours just will not go away. What started out as a joke on McElhenney's part snowballed into genuine transfer rumours in late spring, with Gareth Bale's agent even having to come out and clarify his client's position on a move to Wrexham.

Even after these comments seemed to end the transfer saga, the speculation has refused to die down. While the majority of this clamour is simply Robins fans trying to will the move into existence, if Wrexham's story has taught us anything over the past few years it's that we can never rule anything out.

Even if he doesn't train and only plays 60 minutes, imagine how many goals Bale could score in the fourth tier of British football.

    Omar Bogle

When Bogle was getting booed by Newport County fans after enduring a 15-match scoreless run, nobody would have expected him to respond by finishing the season on 17 goals, enough to leave him fourth in the League Two top-scorer rankings.

Bogle eventually broke his drought by netting a brace against high-flying Stevenage in February and after the game he spoke about the mental toll that the boo boys had on his psyche: “It’s hard to hear but as time went on, and it’s been over a month now, I’ve become immune to it. Even on Tuesday I heard some [shouts] at the beginning of the game, at first it got in my head but now it’s water off a duck’s back. I’ve never had it before with people getting at me, clapping and cheering in a negative way when I’ve been taken off. You just have to stay strong and the only way for me to respond is to put in good performances and score goals. I’ve just got to do my job."

To bounce back and finish the season so strongly – he scored seven times in County's final eight games – shows a real strength of character and it may have turned a few heads in north Wales.

The Exiles will not let him go without a fight, though. Additionally, his patchy scoring record raises a few concerns, particularly as he is unlikely to improve too much at the age of 29.

  • Getty Images

    Ali Al-Hamadi

If Wrexham want to recruit younger, there are few strikers in this age bracket with higher potential than Ali Al-Hamadi. Still only 21, the Iraq international managed 10 goals in just 19 appearances for AFC Wimbledon during the 2022-23 campaign.

The fan-owned Dons are not exactly flushed with cash either, meaning Wrexham would easily be able to offer Al-Hamadi better wages should they decide to try and sign him. Saying that, reports suggest they could face competition from the likes of Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday – though those clubs' priorities may have shifted following their respective promotions.

As a player, Al-Hamadi is capable of scoring all sorts of goals, but he is probably best described as a poacher. His movement inside the box makes him a nightmare to defend against and he loves getting on the end of crosses.

    Gary Madine

Football League journeyman Gary Madine is available on a free transfer after Blackpool opted against offering him a new deal at the end of the 2022-23 season. He has a decent goal record throughout his career, though he has suffered off-field problems too.

In 2010, he was charged with causing actual bodily harm and sentenced to 250 hours community service. Three years later he was handed an 18-month prison sentence after assaulting two men in a Sheffield nightclub. While he has stayed out of trouble since, his arrival could cause PR issues for Wrexham – a club more sensitive than most to how social media and the wider world views them.

In terms of what he could bring on the pitch, Madine is the typical target man. He is physically imposing and capable of bringing his strike partner into play as well as finding the back of the net himself.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Klopp has previously said when quizzed on links to the role with Die Mannschaft: “The job of national coach is and would be a great honour – there's no question about that. The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty. Basically, it's an interesting job. But I don't know yet whether I'll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. The seven-time Ballon d’Or headed to the United States when reaching the end of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain. Messi had the chance to return to Barcelona, but opted instead to take on a entirely different challenge in America.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

He helped Inter Miami to a historic Leagues Cup triumph within weeks of his arrival in Florida, but then picked up an injury on international duty with Argentina and will not play any part in the MLS play-offs as collective performances dipped during his absence. Martino has explained how claiming major silverware was never part of the plan: “The season, really, I thought it was going to be completely different from what happened. My expectations were to create the group, train them in our style of soccer, don't go too deep in Leagues Cup, and compete very well – because we only had two games in the cup – and to be classified [for the play-offs].”

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Inter Miami ended up adding five extra games to their schedule, with those minutes catching up with them – and Messi in particular – as untimely knocks began to take their toll. Martino added after seeing a bid to reach the post-season come to a close: “We had our most wonderful moments until the [September] FIFA dates. And we had problems after that because of an accumulation of games and injuries. Up to that point, we had an idea – it wasn't trained very well, but it was very clear in the players’ heads. I believe that with the losses we started to have, the modifications we started to make, so many variables in the team changed from one game to the next – because we had to modify it to be able to take care of our players – we deteriorated our idea. In the last 20 days, we had our worst time of the year, of course when we had the most need to have the team as healthy as possible.”

Messi did return to action off the bench in Inter Miami’s meeting with FC Cincinnati, but was unable to prevent them from slipping to a 1-0 defeat that brought their play-off bid to an end. Messi will now take in a lengthy break over the winter before the 2024 MLS campaign gets underway.

Barcelona player ratings vs Antwerp: Welcome to the Joao Felix show! Portugal star shines again in easy Champions League opener

The Atletico Madrid loanee scored twice and assisted another as the Blaugrana saw off the Belgian champions with a 5-0 win

Barcelona got off to a winning start in their 2023-24 Champions League campaign as they swept Antwerp aside in a 5-0 victory that was inspired by the superb performance of Joao Felix. The Portugal international scored the opener and set up another in the first 45 minutes, netting with a clever pulled finish, and then laying on Robert Lewandowski's second with a sumptuous cross that gave the Pole a simple volleyed finish.

Barca's third came more by luck than judgement, as a cross sent into the box by Raphinha was inadvertently deflected into his own goal by defender Jelle Bataille. After half-time, meanwhile, Gavi added a fourth with a powerful finish into the top corner, as the Catalan giants scythed through the Antwerp defence.

Felix then scored a superb back-post header after Raphinha's cross to make it 5-0, and put the cherry on what was an absolutely sublime performance.

GOAL rates Barcelona's players from the Olympic Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Marc-Andre ter Stegen (6/10)

Really didn't have much to do, bar a superb double-save in the second half, prior to the flag being lifted for an offside during the attack. A quiet night.

    Joao Cancelo (7/10):

Was allowed to push forward and operate in the final third. Tucked into midfield at times, and was clever with his distribution, crossing well and passing slickly.

    Jules Kounde (6/10):

Dealt with everything thrown at him comfortably and often pushed forward into the opposition's half. Even tried a 25-yard shot, although it flew over the crossbar.

    Andreas Christensen (6/10):

Always in control in defence, and was given plenty of time to distribute. Calm and composed.

    Alejandro Balde (6/10):

Essentially played as a left winger at times. Had a chance in the first half but hit the side netting. Perhaps one of his quietest nights in a Barcelona shirt.

  • Getty Images

    Midfield

    Ilkay Gundogan (7/10):

So elegant with his passing and slid Felix through for the opener. Metronomic with his distribution, and effective in winning the ball back too. An excellent midfield display.

    Frenkie de Jong (8/10):

Played a beautiful pass in the build-up to Lewandowski's goal. Imperious in midfield, constantly driving forward and making things happen. Replaced by Romeu before the hour but his impact was keenly felt.

    Gavi (7/10):

Booked needlessly for a late challenge in midfield but it was his only mistake. Scored Barcelona's fourth with a fierce finish into the top corner.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Raphinha (8/10):

Set up Barca's third, as he crossed the ball, and it took a nick off the defender before hitting the post and finding the back of the net. Delivered a superb cross for Felix's second, and Barca's fifth.

    Robert Lewandowski (6/10):

Involved in the build-up for Felix's goal and scored the second with a simple finish at the back-post. Missed a late one-on-one. Strangely, Barca's least effective attacker even with his goal, but it mattered little.

    Joao Felix (10/10):

Scored the opener, finishing superbly into the bottom corner, then teed up Lewandowski for the second. Added Barca's fifth with an excellent back-post header after Raphinha's teasing cross. A stunning display, with every touch important.

    Subs & Manager

    Oriol Romeu (6/10):

Replaced De Jong and kept Barca ticking in midfield.

    Fermin Lopez (6/10):

On for Gavi. Kept it simple on the ball and did little wrong after his introduction.

    Lamine Yamal (7/10)

Replaced the sublime Felix. Had a superb chance to score, as he rounded the goalkeeper but went too wide and hit the side netting. A livewire on the ball; Barcelona have a player on their hands.

    Ferran Torres (6/10)

On for Raphinha and almost scored with his first touch, although he was not as effective as the man he replaced.

    Sergi Roberto (6/10)

On for Joao Cancelo and saw the game out at right-back.

    Xavi (7/10):

This was always likely to be a comfortable win but Barcelona achieved it in style, and Xavi had the good sense to rest some first-team stars before La Liga resumes this weekend. A good night's work.

Man Utd players accused of ignoring Rasmus Hojlund as £72m man's wait for Premier League goal continues against Sheffield United

Ruud Gullit has claimed that Manchester United's players are ignoring Rasmus Hojlund, who has yet to score his first Premier League goal.

  • Gullit blames Hojlund's team-mates
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Hojlund drew another blank as the Red Devils beat Sheffield United 2-1 on Saturday, with goals from Scott McTominay and Diogo Dalot. Hojlund has now gone six league games without a goal, although he has scored three times in the Champions League.

  • Getty Images

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gullit believes that United's midfielders and attackers are trying to score themselves, instead of doing everything they can to get Hojlund on the scoresheet. The ex-Dutch international claims that when he was playing, he would constantly look to pass to Marco van Basten instead of scoring himself, and believes United's players ought to do the same with Hojlund.

  • WHAT THEY SAID

Gullitt said: "I still think you have to get your striker on the scoresheet. Because if he gets on the scoresheet he gets confidence, then also the rest are looking for him all the time.

"They don’t look for him as much. And he’s in areas where you can have a look at him. You see too many players too eager to score themselves, they’re coming inside, they want to hit the target all the time.

"I played with [Marco] Van Basten, I always thought if I give it to him it’s a goal, if I hit it then it could be a goal. I’d rather give it to him because it’s a definite goal. You know strikers, they’re selfish, they need to score goals. If he’s happy in the team that makes a huge difference for the rest."

Revealed: Marcelo talked to Cristiano Ronaldo about reunion with ex-Real Madrid team-mate at Al-Nassr

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The pair enjoyed many illustrious seasons at Real Madrid, with the Brazilian eventually calling time on his spell in the Spanish capital back in 2022. But an initial move to Olympiacos didn't go to plan and Marcelo elected to leave just five months later, making himself a free agent back in February of this year.

Ultimately, though, the 35-year-old felt an innate longing to return to his boyhood club, almost a decade later.
