Liverpool fans unhappy with Salah update

A number of Liverpool supporters have been left hugely frustrated with an update regarding Mohamed Salah’s potential new deal at Anfield.

The Egyptian has been a sensational player for the Reds, standing out as arguably the star man of the Jurgen Klopp era.

Salah has scored an incredible 133 goals in 211 appearances for Liverpool, carrying the attack at times, particularly last season and in the opening weeks of 2021/22.

Numerous Reds heroes signed new contracts in the summer, but the 29-year-old is yet to extend his stay, leading to concern from some.

According to The Athletic‘s James Pearce and Simon Hughes [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Salah wants to stay at Liverpool, but he is confused as to why a deal hasn’t been agreed seamlessly, as was the case with Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City.

Spurs in pole position for Vlahovic

As per Calciomercato, shared by Sport Witness, a promising claim has now emerged involving Tottenham Hotspur, Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic and Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy.

The Lowdown: Spurs target Vlahovic…

Over the summer, Tottenham tried their utmost to bring in a new striker who could complement Harry Kane and provide sufficient back up.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-updates/” title=”Spurs updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Links to Lautaro Martinez and Vlahovic were prevalent as Spurs attempted to bolster new boss Nuno Espirito Santo’s forward line, but the club couldn’t seal a move.

The Lilywhites have still been eyeing Fiorentina’s rising star outside of the transfer window and now a promising update has emerged.

The Latest: Spurs in pole position…

According to Calciomercato, via SW, Tottenham are now the favourites to sign Vlahovic in January – even ahead of Serie A giants Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

They are apparently in a prime position to sign him due to having the budget and possibility to invest as Levy personally wants to revive Tottenham’s lacklustre start to the season.

Allegedly, there is a belief that Vlahovic could be the perfect man to help turn things around for Nuno.

The Verdict: Get it done…

Labelled ‘really crazy’ by former Bulgaria international Valeri Bojinov, the 21-year-old hot shot would certainly be a stellar signing for Spurs.

His goal record of 21 in Serie A alone last year is a real motive combined with the fact he looks set not to pen fresh terms with La Viola – handing Levy and co some real leverage in negotiations.

While Spurs may need to invest heavily to revamp this lacklustre squad, the report claims that the club are certainly willing to do so, which is exciting news for the Lilywhites support.

Liverpool fans erupt over official update

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have gone wild for ‘massive news’ out of Anfield.

The Reds have started this season in fine fashion as they look to challenge for a Premier League crown once again, coming after they faltered in their defence last campaign.

A plethora of injury woes throughout 2020/2021 took their toll as Liverpool fell far behind eventual winners Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp was forced to cope without the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson, among others, for extended periods in an uphill battle for supremacy.

Liverpool still managed to nick a top four spot at the end of the year but Klopp and FSG will be hoping they can avoid such scares this time around when it comes to squad depth.

Now, in an official announcement by the club and Klopp, it appears the Reds have been boosted as two key players return for their trip to Watford tomorrow.

As confirmed, both Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold are now expected to be fit to face the Hornets as Liverpool gear up for a return to Premier League action.

Flocking to this news, many supporters have gone absolutely wild on Twitter.

Campos interested in Newcastle role

A journalist at Sky Sports has revealed that Luis Campos is ‘interested’ in a role at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: ‘The Wizard’

Campos has been nicknamed ‘The Wizard of Capital Gains’ as he has made a habit of lifting trophies while making hundreds of millions of profit on selling players (Sky Sports).

Among those names are the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho, Thomas Lemar, Bernardo Silva and Anthony Martial, all of whom he discovered while at Monaco, while Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel have both been sold to Arsenal when he was at Lille for a large profit.

The Latest: Campos interest

Sky Sports journalist Gary Cotterill has revealed (via Pete Graves) that Campos would be ‘interested’ in a role at St. James’ Park following the takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

The renowned Sporting Director ‘expects’ to be considered by the new owners, following Ligue 1 title triumphs at both Monaco and Lille.

The Verdict: Get him in

Whether it is a Sporting Director role or any other on the board, the North East club must look to get Campos in as soon as possible.

His record speaks for itself, unearthing hidden talents and helping to beat heavy favourites PSG to the domestic title with two different clubs.

Nonetheless, his background matches perfectly with the direction that the Tyneside outfit want to head in, and getting him on board would be a big coup.

Newcastle, Fonseca, more manager latest

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has dropped the latest news on Paulo Fonseca’s links with Newcastle United, confirming that talks are on hold while the consortium explore other candidates.

The lowdown: New era on Tyneside

With Steve Bruce’s reign in the St. James’ Park dugout now officially over, attention turns to who will replace the 60 year-old at the helm.

The Magpies have been linked with endless names, from Wayne Rooney to Antonio Conte, and while we know Graeme Jones will take charge for the trip to Crystal Palace, there isn’t much certainty on what happens after that.

One name that has cropped up more than most is Fonseca, with Downie brining an update on the former Roma boss live to Sky Sports on Friday.

The verdict: Other candidates in the mix

Via Football Daily, Downie reported from outside the stadium: “We reported yesterday that Paulo Fonseca had held initial discussions with Newcastle.

“It’s my understanding that there have been no further talks since then and certainly no offer.”

He continued: “Fonseca has been spoken to, but I think Newcastle’s new consortium want to make the right decision, they want to make sure they go about things properly, and they do plan to speak to other candidates before making a decision.”

The verdict: Take your time

One can only applaud the new owners for not rushing into what is an absolutely crucial first big decision in Newcastle’s new era.

With Bruce leaving the club locked deep in a relegation battle, the wrong replacement could set the new owners’ plans back years if the Magpies drop into the Championship.

Fonseca certainly has his plaudits, with Ex-Roma striker Antonio Cassano hailing him as an ‘exceptional’ manager, but one name to keep an eye on as an alternative is Roberto Martinez, who has worked with Graeme Jones in the past and is said to be keen on the role.

Ismael must unleash Caleb Taylor

When Valerien Ismael took over as the new West Bromwich Albion manager this summer, the Frenchman arrived with a reputation of playing a direct and attacking brand of football, as well as being a coach who is more than willing to fast-track a club’s most promising youth players into his first-team squad.

However, so far this season, the youngest player to have featured for West Brom in the Championship is 20-year-old Rayhaan Tulloch, with the centre-forward coming on with just one minute remaining in the Baggies’ 2-1 win over Blackburn Rovers back in August.

Indeed, while the likes of Caleb Taylor, Ethan Ingram, Tom Fellows and Taylor Gardner-Hickman have all made an appearance in the 46-year-old manager’s matchday squads, none of the teenagers have been awarded any game time in the league as yet.

This is a subject that Ismael addressed in a recent interview with the Express & Star, with the Frenchman stating his belief that the time has to be right for the youngsters to make the breakthrough into first-team football.

He said: “They’re always close to being involved. You see the results with the U23s since I came here. From the first day they’ve changed their way, they play the same system and they’ve won a lot of games with brilliant performances. Southampton 6-0, Norwich 5-2.

“It shows you already that everything is going in in the right direction – with the first team and the 23s. The main reason now is that a lot of the young players train with us, and they follow our principles. When they play with the 23s, it’s good to see those principles.

“We know that in some positions, if we need to, we can give chances to the younger lads. But they need to wait until the right time, and when it comes I’m sure we’ll have joy with the young players.”

Indeed, while it may be understandable that Ismael has not opted to field some of his younger talents ahead of established first-team regulars while his side are fighting for promotion towards the top of the Championship table, injuries to centre-back duo Matt Clarke and Dara O’Shea earlier this season presented the 46-year-old with the perfect opportunity to afford one of the club’s most promising academy products, Caleb Taylor, with some first-team minutes.

However, rather than doing so, Ismael instead opted to field firstly Cedric Kipre in his back three, before moving left-back Conor Townend into a central defensive position, all while Taylor sat watching on from the bench.

And, should the manager indeed wish to develop the 18-year-old centre-back who Peter Gilbert dubbed a “vocal” player as efficiently as possible, it would seem highly advisable for the Frenchman to unleash the youngster sooner rather than later, or else he may begin to feel somewhat left behind by the West Brom manager.

Indeed, with Albion’s own website describing Taylor as a “colossus at the heart of defence”, it would certainly appear as if the general consensus about the 18-year-old is that the he possesses the potential to save the club millions of pounds in transfer fees over the coming years, all he needs is an opportunity to make his mark.

Newcastle transfer news on Coutinho

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) may now sign Philippe Coutinho for Newcastle United in the January window, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Howe knows him well

It has been reported that Eddie Howe is now ‘close’ to becoming the new permanent boss in the North East after the departure of Steve Bruce, although Graeme Jones will still take interim charge of their match away at Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Nonetheless, Howe should be involved in the St. James’ Park faithful’s transfer activity come January, and Coutinho is a player he knows well from his time in the Premier League – the former Liverpool man scored twice and assisted once in five showings against Howe’s Bournemouth side, including one incredible Man of the Match display at Anfield.

In a 4-0 Liverpool win back in 2017, Howe was extremely complementary of the ‘creative flair’ and ‘pace in attack’ (The Liverpool Echo) on show from Coutinho and co.

The Latest: January move could happen

As per Sport (via Sport Witness), Barcelona are now ‘waiting’ for the Tyneside club to ‘make a move’ for Coutinho, and would be ‘prepared’ to let him go on loan.

However, that option would have to include an obligation to buy next summer, but the Magpies are seen as the ‘obvious destination’ for the playmaker.

The Verdict: Worth the risk

Coutinho has not exactly hit the ground running at Barca, with just 24 goals and 14 assists in 101 games in total over all competitions (£121.5m.

However, he is a player who shone in the Premier League, with 78 goal contributions in 152 matches in the division (FIFA.com back in October last year that he is ‘one of the very best players in the world’ and has ‘magical powers’.

Paying his £380,000-per-week wages should not be too much of a problem for the new mega-rich owners, and at 29 years of age, the Brazil international should be at the peak of his powers.

His signing could also prompt other global names to follow him to the Toon.

Celtic transfer news on Ajeti and Barkas

Frank McAvennie has given his reaction to some Celtic transfer news involving Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas.

The Lowdown: Both can leave

A source from the Parkhead club has recently told Football Insider that they are now willing to sell both players for a loss in the January transfer window.

Ajeti was signed for £5m, while the deal to bring Barkas to Glasgow could rise to £5.5m, meaning that the Hoops would be expecting to sell them for lesser sums in the winter if they can find any suitable buyers.

Selling the two players could free some gaps in the squad for Ange Postecoglou’s team to go out and strengthen, perhaps aiding their push for the Premiership title.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Celtic striker McAvennie has since given his reaction to the transfer news, claiming that his former club should accept any offers which come in for both players:

“Where is Ajeti going to go? No one will buy him.

“If they get an offer of £2million for Ajeti, I would snap your hands off.

“I would happily take a loss on him, get him gone. The same with Barkas. Sell them at any price.

“There is no point in loaning them out. Barkas was £4million and Ajeti was £5million.

“That’s £9million quid down the drain. That’s football though. The recruitment has been awful in recent years.

“Hopefully that is something that improves over the next few years.”

The Verdict: Get rid of both

We agree with McAvennie here.

Ajeti has not had the kind of impact that he would have liked since joining Celtic, scoring just nine goals and supplying five assists in 44 games in all competitions across the last two years (Transfermarkt), an average of a goal or an assist every three matches roughly.

Barkas has only been used horrendous mistake in the Champions League qualifiers against Midtjylland, so would not really be missed either.

With plenty of options both up top and between the sticks, both players should be sold for whatever transfer fees the Hoops can get, which can then be reinvested in other areas of the pitch come January.

In other news, McAvennie claimed that some people at Celtic are ‘hindering’ Postecoglou

Saints suffer double injury blow

Just a few days since their previous Premier League outing that saw Southampton beat Aston Villa 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Adam Armstrong, it seems as though two Saints players have failed to get through the latest international break unscathed.

What’s the news?

It has recently been revealed that Saints captain James Ward-Prowse has withdrawn from the England squad through illness with Valentino Livramento also dropping out of the England U21 squad with an injury, which will surely leave Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl gutted.

After all, it’s safe to say the duo are important players for the manager given how Livramento has started all 11 of Southampton’s Premier League matches so far this season, with Ward-Prowse having only missed two league games as a result of his ban earlier in the season.

Given the lack of clarity over the severity of Livramento’s injury and Ward-Prowse’s illness at the moment, we feel that this could be a worrying time for the Southampton fans, even though they still have a decent amount of time until their next league game against Norwich City.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-southampton-news” title=”Check out the latest Southampton news!”]

Thinking about the worst-case scenario which would be if the duo are both unable to play against the Canaries, we feel that this would be a massive blow for the Saints given how significant they are for the team in defence and midfield.

With Livramento, the fact that he has managed to rack up an average of 2.5 tackles, 1.8 clearances and 1.5 interceptions per game in the league proves just how useful he has been for the team from a defensive point of view.

In regards to Ward-Prowse, we feel that he could well be a big miss if he isn’t available for the Norwich match considering how he has a higher passing success percentage (87.8%) and made more crosses per game (1.9) than any other Saints player in the league so far this season according to WhoScored. Furthermore, he’s the club captain so to lose him again would be an almighty blow.

In a recent poll ran on Football FanCast, the majority of Saints fans made it clear that they feel Ward-Prowse is Southampton’s most important player, demonstrating why they’ll be gutted about his potential absence.

Moving forward, with the pair set to stay at the club for the remainder of the break, everyone at Southampton, especially Hasenhuttl, will be hoping that they can fully recover from their issues by the time the Premier League starts back up again.

Michael Keane has been Everton’s unsung hero

Everton’s season has already had several ups and downs under Rafael Benitez, with their fast start to the Premier League campaign unravelling in recent weeks.

The Toffees got 2021/22 off to a blistering start, losing just one of their opening eight top-flight fixtures to spark hope of a genuine push for European qualification.

Summer signings Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend stole the headlines after bagging a combined eight goals in Everton’s first nine games in all competitions, but neither has found the back of the net in the team’s last four outings.

Injuries have played a significant part in the Toffees’ downturn in futures over the last four games, with the absences of Yerry Mina, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure contributing to their miserly total of just one point from a possible 12.

However, one player who has been relatively consistent throughout Everton’s rise and fall has been Michael Keane.

The centre-back has had to contend with lining up alongside a number of different partners at the heart of defence this season, including Mina, Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey. He has been an ever-present in Benitez’s side, though, playing every minute of their topsy-turvy campaign.

Keane’s goal against his former club Burnley helped to seal a 3-1 victory, and although his two assists came in defeats against Watford and Wolves, they illustrate his attacking prowess in the opposition box.

However, it’s in his traditional defensive duties where Keane has really excelled. As per SofaScore, the 28-year-old has won a whopping 59 duels, made an astonishing 46 clearances and 30 interceptions, and completed 17 tackles and 14 blocks.

If Everton are to get back on track and revive their season, then the England international could well be key to their fortunes, and Benitez will be hoping that his unsung hero continues his current run of impressive form.
