Porém, preferiu destacar a qualidade do rival deste domingo.

Desde então, Santos e Palmeiras intensificaram a rivalidade, decidindo Campeonato Paulista e Copa do Brasil no ano seguinte, com o Peixe vencendo a competição e estadual e o Alviverde a nacional.

Manchester United target planning 2023 move

Manchester United transfer target Jurrien Timber says that he intends to leave Ajax in 2023, as per Algemeen Dagblad (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Samuel Luckhurst of Manchester Evening News reported in the summer that Erik ten Hag and United had identified the 21-year-old as a ‘priority target’ for their defence.

Timber ultimately opted to stay at the Johann Cruyff ArenA, penning a new contract as a potential means of protecting his value.

The Red Devils signed his former Ajax team-mate Lisandro Martinez, but it’s possible that Erik ten Hag will pursue further reinforcements next summer. He appears dissatisfied with Harry Maguire, having dropped the Englishman to his substitutes’ bench in recent games.

The latest

In an interview with Dutch publication Algemeen Dagblad (via Sport Witness), Timber revealed his plan to depart Ajax next summer after talks behind the scenes at the Amsterdam club.

He stated: “Whether agreements have been made to make a transfer next year? That’s the intention, yes, but you never know how it will go. But that has been discussed well together with Ajax.”

The verdict

This is certainly one to watch in next year’s transfer windows.

The €50m-rated (£43m) defender needed guaranteed first-team football in the first half of the season to preserve his World Cup ambitions, but after another 12 months of his development, he could be ready to push for a starting place at Old Trafford alongside former Ajax team-mates Martinez and Antony.

If he does make the move to Old Trafford, then perhaps he would strike up something of a rivalry with Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez – the Dutchman spoke of his intention to ‘boss’ the 23-year-old after Benfica beat Ajax in last season’s Champions League round of 16.

They’re due to meet again in this year’s group stage after Ajax were drawn against Liverpool, and United fans may be watching those matches closely.

Crystal Palace missed out on Djibril Sow

Crystal Palace haven’t had the best start to the 2022/23 Premier League campaign, currently sitting 15th in the table, and a disappointing summer transfer window could be to blame for their slow start as a new update has emerged from a reliable source.

What’s the latest?

According to The Athletic’s Palace reporter Matt Woosnam, the Eagles missed out on a number of transfer targets on whom they were keen this summer – including Djibril Sow, who the club tried to sign in a last-minute Deadline Day deal.

In an article written by Woosnam for The Athletic, he claims that Palace made contact with the 25-year-old in the final hours of the transfer window but were unsuccessful in their pursuit of the player.

Gallagher 2.0

There is no doubt that Conor Gallagher wasn’t going to be an easy player to replace this summer, having won the club’s Player of the Year award for 2021/22, but finding the Chelsea youngster’s replacement in the number eight position in midfield was something that Patrick Vieira was clearly keen to address.

Sow became a late target for Palace on Deadline Day after Eintracht Frankfurt received a bid from Nottingham Forest earlier in the transfer window, but he refused the move in order to focus on his football in Germany after winning the Europa League last season with his current club.

The Swiss midfielder could’ve been the perfect Gallagher replacement in the centre of the pitch for Vieira, as he has a number of attributes which make him the right profile of player to enhance the midfield at Selhurst Park.

According to FBref, the €20m (£17.2m)-valued midfielder has Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz and Liverpool’s Fabinho named as two of the most comparable players to him; and in terms of his similarities with Gallagher, it’s not hard to see why Palace were keen on the 25-year-old.

Over last season, the duo recorded excellent pass completion rates (85.1% v 76.1%), attempted the same number of tackles (69) and came close in their pressure success rates (31.4% v 28.3%), while Sow narrowly outperformed Gallagher for dribbles completed (70% v 63.4%).

Although Sow displays many of his abilities in defensive play, he is clearly capable of offering an attacking threat too. In 2021/22, he registered two goals and six assists in all competitions, including an important assist for the winning goal against West Ham United in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals which eventually sent them through to the final after a 1-0 win in the second leg.

It’s a shame that the powerbrokers at Selhurst Park couldn’t get a deal done in their late attempt, but there are already reports that Palace will go back in for the midfielder in January, so not all hope is lost for the Eagles in terms of strengthening the engine room in their squad.

Leeds landed a special talent in Gyabi

Leeds United and Victor Orta have made a very conscious effort since the club’s return to the Premier League to invest in a number of talents for the future, with the likes of Joe Gelhardt, Sam Greenwood, Crysencio Summerville, Kristoffer Klaesson, Cody Drameh, Sonny Perkins, Wilfried Gnonto and Darko Gyabi all arriving at Elland Road over the last two years.

And, while a number of these youngsters have already started making inroads into Jesse Marsch’s first-team squad – particularly Gelhardt, Greenwood, Summerville, Drameh and Klaesson – summer signings Perkins, Gnonto and Gyabi are yet to make a senior appearance for the Whites – although, considering their undoubted talent, it would appear only a matter of time before they do.

Indeed, while both Gnonto and Perkins are exceptionally talented young footballers, the £5m addition of Gyabi looks to have been an incredibly smart move by Orta, as the former Manchester City and current England U18 international is a player who has already generated a considerable amount of hype in his short professional career – and it is not difficult to see why.

Despite arriving at Thorp Arch as recently as July, the 18-year-old has already made a real impression within Michael Skubala’s U21 squad, having already scored one goal – a thunderous drive from outside the penalty area in a 5-1 win over Nottingham Forest – and provided his teammates with one assist over his four appearances in the Premier League 2 in the 2022/23 campaign.

These returns have seen the central midfielder come in for a significant amount of praise, with Joe Donnohue claiming in a post on Twitter that Gyabi is a player who “moves through the gears really well, escapes pressure and can pick a forward pass,” while Yaw Ampofo claimed that Gyabi “will be excellent,” before suggesting it is “just a matter of time” before his makes his debut.

Jesse Marsch also appears to be extremely excited about the future of Gyabi, with the 48-year-old manager stating of the playmaker following the Whites’ pre-season victory over Brisbane Roar (via Leeds Live):

“We were excited from the start about the possibility of adding him to the group and now watching him live and seeing his mentality to improve, even more so. I would say with him, with Archie Gray, with Cree Summerville, with Sam Greenwood and with Joffy Gelhardt, we have a core of really young talented players that we think can be a big part of the future.”

As such, Orta’s capture of Gyabi this summer – a move that “sent shockwaves” through the Manchester City academy, according to Simon Bajkowski – very much looks to have been the director of football unearthing a real diamond, as it would appear only a matter of time before the former Millwall starlet who Neil Harris dubbed “exceptional” explodes into the Premier League scene.

Everton dropped a clanger with Walcott

Everton’s decision to sign Theo Walcott from Arsenal in 2018 proved to be a disaster as he struggled to show anywhere near the level of performance at Goodison Park as he had done with the Gunners.

The Toffees confirmed in January 2018 that the 28-year-old had completed a move to the club, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract having spent almost all of his senior career with Arsenal.

During his time with the north London club, he hit 108 goals in 397 appearances but he would show no such form in Merseyside, registering just 11 goals and nine assists in 85 appearances for the club.

The 2020/21 season saw Walcott shipped to Southampton on loan as the club looked to ease their wage expenditure and inevitably, after a year on the south coast, the former England international completed a permanent move back to the club where it all started for him.

To sign a player for £20m and let him leave on loan the season before his contract ends represented awful business by the Toffees, as surely they could have simply sold him to Southampton the season before to avoid losing him for nothing, as even a minimal fee is better than nothing.

It was clear from when Walcott signed that he was no longer at his best, as he featured in just 63 minutes of Premier League action for Arsenal in the 2017/18 season before his January switch to Everton, which again begs the question of why the club felt he was worth £20m.

It has been a sad decline to Walcott’s career after he showed such promise as a youngster with the Gunners, with the 2012/13 season perhaps the best of his career, when he managed 12 goals and 13 assists in the top flight.

During a strong run of form in 2016, Arsenal legend Lee Dixon sang the winger’s praises, saying:

“His speed and quality on the ball is unquestionable.

“Now all of a sudden he is unplayable. He is thinking about the game. It seems like he has turned into a different player.”

Unfortunately for Everton, just two years later and he was unplayable in a different sense, in that you couldn’t justify his selection anymore because his performances were so poor, as he averaged a shocking 6.51 rating from WhoScored in his first full season with the club.

[freshpress-quiz id=“638086″]

While the Toffees have signed some poor players in their history, the deal to sign Walcott and then release him a few years later will surely go down as one of the board’s worst transfer decisions.

Crystal Palace set to land academy star David Obou on professional deal

Crystal Palace look set to fend off interest in academy star David Obou by securing his services to a three-year professional deal, according to The Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Obou profiled

Obou joined Palace’s academy in January 2021 and has seemingly caught the eye at international level, along with the attention of several clubs.

The 16-year-old, who can play on either flank or in a central attacking midfield role, is being tracked by France and has been invited to play for England at youth level.

He has already turned out for Palace’s under-18s, and it looks as if he will remain with the Eagles when he turns 17 in November.

The Latest: Obou set to sign new Palace deal

The Daily Mail’s David Kent shared a story on Monday evening, suggesting that Palace will fend off interest from Bayern Munich and PSV Eindhoven to secure Obou to a three-year professional contract.

They described it as a boost for Palace, with the club agreeing on terms for a professional deal to kick in when he turns 17 later this year.

The Verdict: Good news for Palace

Obou clearly has plenty of potential, judging by  the two European clubs being keen on his services, so Palace landing the teenager on a permanent professional deal can only be good news for Patrick Vieira.

The Eagles have a number of exciting attacking youngsters coming through, including Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and David Omilabu, who both penned professional deals last year, and Obou looks set to follow in their footsteps.

The next step for the 16-year-old could be to establish himself in the club’s under-23s over the coming years, with a view to eventually breaking through into Vieira’s first-team setup.

Celtic close to Mohanad Jeahze transfer

Celtic secured the SPFL title last night after picking up a point away at Dundee United in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge of the Hoops.

Even though the Bhoys still have one league game to play before the season ends and the summer transfer window opens for business, it seems as though the club are already close to completing their first deal.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Scottish Sun, Celtic are on the verge of securing a deal for Hammarby defender Mohanad Jeahze worth a reported fee of £2m.

Since joining the Swedish club back in the 2020 summer transfer window, the left-back has gone on to make 56 appearances across all competitions.

Great news for Postecoglou

In those appearances, the Iraq international has scored two goals and delivered 12 assists for his side along the way which shows how much of a useful attacking figure he can be from the defence.

Taking into account how the Hoops have scored more goals than any other side in the league this season as well as conceded the fewest, adding a player like Jeahze could make them even more dangerous going forward.

Even though the Bhoys currently have two left-backs on their books in the shape of Greg Taylor and Boli Bolingoli, the Belgian has only played in two games for his side this season.

This and the fact that he has been away training on his own doesn’t say much for his long-term future at the Parkhead club.

Now that it has been reported that Jeahze is close to a move to Celtic, Bolingoli’s potential exit could see the Hammarby defender take his place in Postecoglou’s squad.

Given how swift the club have been in terms of potentially securing a deal for the 25-year-old, this would surely please the Hoops boss, potentially kickstarting what could be another busy summer transfer period for the club.

If the newly crowned SPFL champions do end up signing the Hammarby left-back, this will then give them the opportunity to move onto other areas of the squad that the 56-year-old may want to strengthen ahead of their next campaign.
