The BCCI’s annual elections have been postponed to a date not later than January 31, 2015 following a directive from the Supreme Court. The elections were due to be held on December 17, but the BCCI told the court that the elections could not be held until the hearings in the IPL 2013 corruption case were completed.This is the third time the BCCI elections, originally scheduled to be held before September 30, 2014, have been postponed as there has not been a final decision on the IPL corruption case over the involvement of sidelined BCCI president N Srinivasan.A two-man bench of the Supreme Court consisting of Justice TS Thakur and FM Kalifullah heard the arguments from counsel representing Srinivasan, BCCI, India Cements Ltd, former Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra on Wednesday. Given that there are arguments to be made by counsel for IPL COO Sundar Raman as well as the litigants Cricket Association of Bihar, along with interventions that have been permitted by the court, there is a very strong possibility the case could extend into the new year.The BCCI pleaded with the court asking what could be done about the elections in the course of extended hearings and asked for an order with regard to the elections. Justice Thakur then asked why, on previous two occasions, the BCCI had taken decisions on its own to postpone the elections, but was now seeking a direction of the court. BCCI counsel CA Sundaram replied that it would be “appropriate” as the Registrar of Societies had been given information the last time the elections had been postponed.As part of his arguments in court today, Srinivasan’s counsel Kapil Sibal gave an undertaking, on behalf of his client, that if he were elected president, “till the (proposed) committee suggests the procedure to deal with the issue of conflict of interest, he will not attend any IPL governing council meeting or any other IPL related discussion in any meeting of working committee or general body meeting of the BCCI.”The undertaking handed over to the court also said that the Court’s proposed two-member high-powered committee could “suggest sanctions to be imposed, in accordance with applicable IPL rules, on person prima facie found to be involved in the act of betting by the Mudgal panel, besides determining the liability of the franchisees.” The “suggestion” refers to the fact that the committee’s conclusions would not be binding on the BCCI.N Srinivasan’s counsel said the sidelined BCCI president was ready to give an undertaking, that were he to be elected president, he would not attend BCCI working committee meetings or IPL governing council meetings•AFP

The BCCI also raised its objections to the court’s suggestion of a high-powered committee, comprising two former judges independent of the board, to take a decision and also mete out a penalty on the conflict of interest issues around Srinivasan, his son-in-law Gurunath and the Super Kings franchise.The BCCI argued that the panel would “challenge” the board’s “autonomy”, as a private body, governed by the Societies Registration Act. The BCCI, Sundaram said, did not want an “external agency” to set its rules. Like in Srinivasan’s argument, the board wanted the findings of the high-powered committee to be “suggestions” and “not be binding on the BCCI.” The court did not agree with this argument, saying that the BCCI had taken no action on its own and stated that the two judges’ decisions could work to “strengthen” the rules of the BCCI.In response to the fact that the BCCI was a private body, the bench made a precise observation of the current status of the BCCI. The BCCI counsel were asked if the board could whether any other Board could call the team selected by them, ‘Team India?’ The court said the BCCI had “de facto and de jure monopoly.””If you have disqualified any person, can he play in any international cricket conducted by ICC? If you have this kind of all-pervasive control, then you are performing a public duty.”The court told the BCCI that the “entire game of cricket and its edifice will collapse” if the BCCI’s current “arrangement” was “allowed to continue and if people’s confidence in the sport is not restored.” The BCCI was asked, “If you (BCCI) fail in your duty, can’t we get it corrected? If there is some temptation for a thief to enter, why can’t you stop it? Why are you averse to it?”Sundaram argued that the court could intervene when there was a specific case where public confidence had been dented but not make sweeping changes to the BCCI’s private bylaws, to which the bench responded by asking, “So you want us to catch the thief but not plug the scope of future theft?”In arguing India Cements’ case, the company’s counsel Mahesh Jethmalani said that the Super Kings franchise should not be penalised for the actions of Gurunath. Jethmalani said that Gurunath was betting in a “personal capacity” and “from home”. He also said argued that India Cements has 3000 employees and the company could not keep tabs on what each one did at home. Justice Thakur said: “It doesn’t make a difference, betting is betting. You should have ensured you are not surrounded by people who bet.”Siddharth Luthra, counsel for Gurunath said that the court should not “prejudice” Gurunath’s criminal trial in Mumbai with its findings. Gurunath was arrested in Mumbai on May 24, 2013 on charges of cheating, forgery and fraud.When asked repeatedly whether Gurunath was a Super Kings team official, no specific answer was given. Thakur asked him, “Do you want to disclose or not?” to which Luthra said his client had “the right to defence and the right to silence. It is a subject matter of prosecution.” Gurunath had also refused to speak to the Mudgal committee on the same grounds, citing the criminal case pending against him in the Bombay High Court.The hearings for the case will resume on December 15 at 2pm and the court will go into a vacation between December 19 and January 5. Sixteen-and-a-half hours of judicial time have gone into the hearings of this case since the Mudgal committee presented its final report to the Supreme Court in early November.

Australia’s captain Michael Clarke led the tributes at Phillip Hughes’ funeral in Macksville, where family, friends, team-mates, past cricketers, dignitaries and the public gathered to mourn for the batsman, who died last Thursday.The funeral service was broadcast live on Australian television and radio, and was also shown at the SCG, Adelaide Oval, WACA and Bellerive Oval, where mourners were invited to gather for a public viewing of the Macksville service. The Hughes family, Clarke, his wife Kyly, and the Australian Test team walked together with locals, visitors, administrators and Australia’s prime minister Tony Abbott. Winding through Wallace Street, they made for a rare sight of shared grief but also collective memory of Hughes’ life.India’s acting captain Virat Kohli and coach Duncan Fletcher walked alongside Adam Gilchrist. Shane Watson and David Warner offered a sombre partnership in lock step together, and CA’s chief executive James Sutherland spoke with members of both the cricket and Macksville communities. They were all headed towards the Macksville Ex-Services Club for the wake, where tears and laughter were likely to flow in equal measure.At the SCG, a line of 63 cricket bats, one for each run Hughes score in his final innings, was planted into the turf, each one inscribed with a special moment or fact about Hughes. “‘He was 12 playing against 18-year-olds and even then he was a step above them,’ remembers Macksville High sports master Barry Lockyer,” read one of the bats.A photo memorial, flowers and cricket equipment were laid behind the stumps where Hughes was struck down last Tuesday. The pitch and centre square were roped off as a mark of respect, and the pitch on which Hughes played his final game will be retired and not used again this summer.In Adelaide, at Hughes’ adopted home ground, the Adelaide Oval, around 2000 people gathered in the Riverbank Stand and the Chappell Stand to watch on the big screen the service telecast live on Channel Nine. After the service the public was allowed to get to the main square and leave their flowers and tributes.It will be at Adelaide Oval that Australia’s cricketers will “play on”, as Clarke said, with the rescheduled first Test against India to begin there next Tuesday.

O Botafogo teve uma confirmação importante para suas pretensões internas. Nesta terça-feira,a concessão do Estádio Nilton Santos, junto à Prefeitura do Rio de Janeiro, foi renovada até abril de 2031. A solenidade ocorreu no Palácio da Cidade, na Zona Sul do estado, e foi marcada pelas presenças de Marcello Crivella, prefeito da cidade, Nelson Mufarrej, presidente do Alvinegro, e os jogadores Joel Carli e João Paulo.

O acordo entre Botafogo e Prefeitura foi consolidado na última semana, mas o desejo de Nelson Mufarrej era de assinar o novo contrato ao lado de Marcelo Crivella, o que foi possível, por conta da agenda do prefeito, apenas nesta terça-feira. O mandatário, inclusive, se colocou como parceiro do Botafogo.

– Quero colocar a Prefeitura como sua parceira. O Rio de Janeiro pode não ser todo Botafogo, mas há uma estrela solitária que conduz todos nós. Somos representantes dessa esperança desde 1910, que é o que a gente canta. O Botafogo tem cuidado do nosso estádio de uma maneira impecável. Não é a maior torcida do Rio, mas digo, sem medo de errar e sei que todos vão concordar comigo, que o Rio de Janeiro não seria o que é se não fosse o Botafogo, base da seleção nos anos 60. O Botafogo não pôde utilizar o estádio por conta de reformas do dia 23 de março de 2013 ao dia 14 de novembro de 2016, referentes a obras para a realização dos Jogos Olímpicos. O departamento jurídico do clube fez o pedido de renovação baseado em uma relação de compensação pelo tempo que o Nilton Santos ficou parado e foi prontamente atendido.

A negociação, considerada tranquila pelo departamento jurídico, permite que o Botafogo tenha mais três anos e oito meses de concessão do estádio. Durante a solenidade, o presidente Nelson Mufarrej comemorou a renovação do vínculo.

– Lutamos muito para que a concessão do Estádio Nilton Santos fosse estendida pelo período de obras. Provamos tudo ao prefeito, que verificou com toda a condição de responsabilidade para que a prorrogação da concessão do estádio. É uma honra para o Botafogo. Teremos mais três anos e oito meses para gerir o futebol. Sempre que o Crivella não vai para os jogos nós ficamos nervosos, porque sempre que ele vai o Botafogo ganha. Estamos muito honrados com essa concessão, agradeço ao prefeito por essa prorrogação – afirmou.

وقال عبد الحفيظ خلال تصريحات على “قناة أبو ظبي” الرياضية: “تغيير موعد المباراة من السابعة إلى الثالثة (لخبطة) من القائمين على المسابقة، أمر ليس له تفسير، فريق يلعب كل مبارياته في توقيت معين ما عدا أمام الأهلي وفرق شمال إفريقيا سواء الترجي أو الوداد، لعبوا أمام بترو أتلتيكو الساعة 7 في نفس البطولة”.

وأضاف: “هذه بطولة جديدة وبالتأكيد تُفضل أن يشاهدها أكبر عدد، أي منطق أن تقام الساعة 3 ظهرًا، هذا من الناحية التسويقية خطأ، واستمرارًا (للخبطة في الاتحاد الإفريقي)، الكاف لو يريد أن يجعل المباريات الساعة الثانية ظهرًا أو في أي توقيت سيفعل ذلك”.

وعن طاقم التحكيم، أوضح: “أريد شخص واحد فقط من الاتحاد الإفريقي يقول لي لماذا تم اختيار هذا الحكم، عندما يتم اختيار شخص لمكان معين، يكون بناءً على الثقة، تخيل أن هذا الحكم أدار لقاء أو لقائين على مستوى دوري الأبطال في الأدوار التمهيدية لموسم 2021”.

Five for the day – ‘Fearless, spectacular Rahane’

For one minute short of four hours, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli made the future of Indian Test cricket look very bright indeed. For the two hours or so either side, the rest of the touring side confirmed why that future is still some way short of being realised.A hot and occasionally hot-tempered third day at the MCG had numerous fluctuations. First Australia prospered with a pair of early wickets to hasty strokes from Cheteshwar Pujara and M Vijay, and later they did so again through Nathan Lyon’s persevering spin and a sharp spell of reverse swing from the admirable Ryan Harris.But its centrepiece was a stand of 262 between Rahane and Kohli, a union that was both substantial enough to leave Steven Smith wondering where his next wicket was coming from but also swift enough to keep open the prospect of an outright result in this match, which India must win to stay in contention for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Rahane set the tone of the partnership, skating past 30 at better than a run a ball to shift momentum away from Australia. Kohli was a little more collected, but carried on beyond the loss of his partner and other members of India’s exceedingly collapsible tail to 169, his highest Test score. It was not until the last over of the day that Kohli fell, his edge clasped by a diving Brad Haddin.The second exceptional Haddin catch of the day contrasted with some rather indifferent fielding by Australia through mid-afternoon, when at least three chances went down. Nathan Lyon missed the gentlest of return catches from Rahane in the final over before the second new ball became due, and after Mitchell Johnson took it an edge from Kohli’s bat was grassed by Shane Watson, diving to his left and into territory commonly reserved for Haddin.Australian frustration with the Rahane-Kohli partnership was illustrated when Johnson fired a return at the stumps and caught Kohli in the lower back – words were exchanged at other times, and any visible acknowledgement of the Indian pair’s hundreds could best be described as low key. They were more generous to Rahane upon his departure, and Kohli was applauded by all sections of the ground as he led the players off at stumps.Pujara had seemed unusually eager to see bat on ball, and from Harris’ second ball of the morning he aimed an uncharacteristic cut/glide to a ball he would have often left. The edge was thick and Haddin flew through the air, the milestone dismissal among his more spectacular, atoning for dropping the same batsman the previous evening.Kohli was greeted by some fast stuff from Harris and Mitchell Johnson, but it was Vijay who was struck by the latter on the helmet with a short ball that reared up in defiance of an easy-paced pitch. He had played and missed at more than his share of deliveries during another innings of otherwise calm temper, but he became impatient when teased by Watson’s line and medium pace. Aiming a cut shot similar to Pujara’s, he too offered a thick outside edge that this time sailed as far as Shaun Marsh at first slip.This wicket seemed to tilt the morning towards Australia, but Kohli and Rahane responded with a counterattack of considerable verve. Rahane wasted very little time, and after a fortunate first boundary which bisected Haddin and Watson from a Lyon away-drifter, he struck a quartet far more convincing to help raise a 50-stand in as many minutes.They went on with it in the afternoon, mixing some handsome and inventive strokes with eager running between the wickets and manipulation of Smith’s fields. The certainty with which Rahane and Kohli played seemed to work against Australian concentration, so when chances arrived they were not quite sharp enough to take them.Lyon in particular will wonder for a long time how he managed to hash Rahane’s bunted return catch: in the 80th over of the innings it would have been a pivotal blow. But the miss allowed the stand to go on past tea, and to a point where India began to ponder a first-innings lead.Ultimately it was Lyon who broke the stand, winning an lbw verdict from Kumar Dharmasena against a sweeping Rahane, though replays suggested the ball had not straightened enough to flick off stump. كشفت تقارير صحفية إيطالية، أن نادي يوفنتوس يسعى للتعاقد مع الدولي الإنجليزي كالفين فيليبس، لاعب فريق كرة القدم الأول بنادي مانشستر سيتي.

كالفين فيليبس صاحب الـ27 عامًا، يجد صعوبة في اللعب أساسيًا مع المدرب بيب جوارديولا، منذ انضمامه في صيف 2022 قادمًا من ليدز يونايتد.

اللاعب الإنجليزي هدفًا للعديد من الأندية الأوروبية قبل ميركاتو الشتاء، أبرزها بايرن ميونخ وليفربول ونيوكاسل، من بين أندية أخرى مهتمة بضمه.

صحيفة “لا جازيتا ديلو سبورت” الإيطالية، أكدت أن  يوفنتوس أجرى اتصالًا مع ممثلي فيليبس لبحث إمكانية التعاقد معه في يناير المقبل، معارًا حتى نهاية الموسم مع أحقية الشراء.

ويحتاج يوفنتوس للتعاقد مع لاعب وسط، وذلك بعد إيقاف بول بوجبا بسبب تعاطي المنشطات، وثبوت قضية المراهنات على نيكولو فاجيولي، مما أدى لإيقاف كل منهما فترة طويلة.

الصحيفة الإيطالية، أشارت إلى أن يوفنتوس يضع فيليبس نصب أعينه في المقام الأول لتدعيم وسط ملعب الفريق، مستغلًا عدم سماح مانشستر سيتي برحيله إلى أي فريق إنجليزي آخر.

ويريد فيليبس المشاركة أساسيًا، من أجل ضمان تواجده في يورو 2024 مع منتخب إنجلترا تحت قيادة المدرب ساوثجيت، الذي يثق في خدمات لاعب ليدز السابق.
