Duminy keen to dispel spin demons

After South Africa’s collapse in the previous game, JP Duminy wants to use the final ODI to prove the team can handle spin

Firdose Moonda11-Jul-20141:34

‘Have to nullify Malinga, Dilshan’

Squandering a 1-0 advantage, the spotlight on batsmen to step up against spin, and the likely return of their pace spearhead are exactly what South Africa wanted ahead of their series decider against Sri Lanka. Yes, all three of those things, even though only the last one seems to make sense.Dale Steyn was forced to leave the field with a thumb injury after bowling only 2.2 overs on Wednesday and suffered severe bruising but no fracture. His recovery has galloped along and by Friday evening, South Africa were more than just hopeful he would be fit for the next match; they all but said they were certain he will be.Even though Ryan McLaren did an exceptional job as a death bowler with four wickets in his final two overs, having Steyn back will be a boost to South Africa’s attack, especially because there is still no clarity on when Jacques Kallis will be able to bowl except that it will not be soon. The other two factors mentioned earlier, meanwhile, will test South Africa’s resilience and resolve, both of which were lacking in Pallekele.Only Hashim Amla managed a score over 30; the rest of the batsmen’s application was woeful. Quinton de Kock was foxed by a round the wicket angle and Kallis was bounced out but most notably, the six batsman from No. 4 to No. 9 were victims of spin, confirming South Africa’s soft underbelly is still troubled by turn.JP Duminy: ‘It came down to bad shot selection. I am a case in point’•Associated Press

JP Duminy is one of the players who rejects that assertion and wants to use the final ODI to prove it. “It came down to bad shot selection. I am a case in point,” he said. Duminy was caught behind as he chased an offbreak, a ball he could have left alone – which may be why he blamed his own judgment and not the art of spin for his dismissal.Similarly, AB de Villiers, David Miller and Ryan McLaren were all caught in the field after being lured forward by flight. In the lead-up to Saturday’s game, Duminy reiterated that the batsmen were to blame for the defeat. “As batters we take full responsibility for those soft dismissals. We want to get it right in the next game. We will prepare well to give ourselves a good chance.”Some of South Africa’s preliminary work for the must-win match would have focused on the Hambantota surface, which is expected to suit them more than the one in Pallekele. “The nice thing about this ground is that we’ve had some good success here,” Duminy said. South Africa have won three of the four matches they’ve played at the ground, albeit 20-over games which included one against Zimbabwe, and the history will give them confidence.Kallis was not part of that history though and his concern will be the more immediate past. With only one run in the series and no other contribution to speak of, pressure is mounting for him to perform and Duminy thinks he will. “Jacques is a formidable player. He has done it for years. We have all been in difficult situations over the years but I wouldn’t call it bad form, it has only been two games. I am sure he is hungry to do well for the team.”Coach Russell Domingo has also given Kallis his backing but explained the wait on him to start bowling cannot continue for much longer. “For us it’s a matter of time before he makes an impact with the bat,” Domingo said. “Jacques is good enough to play as a specialist batter, but we need him to bowl for us as well. He has a few niggles in his back at the moment, so we won’t risk him bowling now, because that will affect his batting.”South Africa are convinced Kallis’ efforts with the willow will only get better and they may need that to happen overnight, literally, if they hope to win a first-ever ODI series in Sri Lanka. After their resounding win in the first match, it seemed they would have a good chance of that but the opposite result in the second game has raised questions. While AB de Villiers bemoaned South Africa’s inconsistency, Duminy explained why it is not such a bad thing. “There’s pressure on both teams. It’s a bit of a final for us,” he said. “It’s important for us being exposed to these situations. We are going to be playing a lot of one-day games leading up to the World Cup, so the more we get put in these situations, the better it will be for us. Come the World Cup, we will be in a good space in terms of being put in different situations and if we are confronted with these situations in the World Cup, we will know what to do.”

Prince earns Lancashire a rare lead

Like Frank Watson and Harry Pilling from earlier eras in Lancashire’s history, Ashwell Prince’s skills are not those to delight cricket’s aesthete. But who cares?

Like Frank Watson and Harry Pilling from earlier eras in Lancashire’s history, Ashwell Prince’s skills are not those to delight cricket’s aesthete. But who cares? It does nothing to limit his effectiveness or reduce his popularity. Home supporters huddled under The Point on a windy, damp Sunday at Old Trafford could not claim Prince as one of their own – he was born in Port Elizabeth rather than Warrington’s Watson or Ashton-under-Lyne’s Pilling – but they could admire his phlegmatic approach, his hard-wired technique, his undimmable courage. Those strengths were on view again on the third day of the game against Durham as Prince piloted his team to a lead of 81 with his third Championship century of the season. The value of that 204-ball effort can be gauged a little by the fact that it took Lancashire to only their third first-innings lead of the season in 13 matches.Rather more useful, though, was the opportunity it created for slow left-armer Simon Kerrigan to bowl into the rough which is under the noses of the five left-handers among Durham’s top seven batsmen. In his seven overs on Sunday evening Kerrigan removed only Mark Stoneman, caught at short leg by Steven Croft for 29, but there was sufficient bounce and turn to encourage the Lancashire spinner going into the final three sessions of this game when even a Durham victory cannot be ruled out on what is more or less a seventh-day pitch.Prince’s century on Sunday was all the more admirable given that he had begun his innings seven times, such was the frequency of the showers which gusted across Old Trafford from the west and sent the cricketers scampering back to the warmth and isotonic security of the changing room. Indeed, the performances of all the players were admirable this wind-blown Sunday when even the batsmen found it tough to find rhythm or balance.Play was interrupted three times in the first session and thrice also in the afternoon with some of the rain gusts so brief that the cricketers had no sooner scurried off than they had to return. In the morning’s play Tom Smith hit eight boundaries, most of them sweetly-driven affairs off Scott Borthwick and played by a man for whom cricket has become a most agreeable pursuit this summer. Indeed, Smith outscored his partner more than two to one in making 44 and looked set for a seventh first-class fifty when he drove John Hastings to Calum MacLeod in the gully.Having lost one free-scoring partner, Prince was no doubt content to acquire another in Stephen Parry, who made a career-best 37 off 55 balls against the county whose attack he once faced as a Lancashire opener in only his third first-class match back in 2009. By mid- afternoon successive 60-plus partnerships had given Lancashire a useful 40-run lead, but further progress was prevented by the torrential wind-driven showers which powered across Old Trafford.Within a few moments or so the hover-cover was protecting the pitch but the placement of sheets on the rest of the square proved devilishly difficult. For several minutes the groundstaff struggled against the gales and rain like the men patrolling Barnegat in Walt Whitman’s famous poem, the canvasses billowing around them as they strove to tame nature and were forced to wait until the elements tolerated such control. When play resumed Prince reached his century with a pulled four off Borthwick but was bowled off the inside edge by Hastings in the next over. Glen Chapple and Tom Bailey then added a cheery 37 for the ninth wicket in half an hour but Hastings and Ben Stokes wrapped up the innings in four balls, the Australian completing a whole-hearted 28-over effort by having Bailey edge a lifting delivery to Mustard.Hastings ended the innings with 4 for 78 while Borthwick sent down more overs in an innings – 49 for 158 runs – than any Durham bowler since 1998. Given the precision required to purvey leg-spin and the conditions in which the 24-year-old was required to do so, it was rather admirable that he went for a little more three runs an over. Like Prince, a cricketer 13 years his senior, Borthwick can therefore review his day with some pride, even if it is the South African 40th first-class century that captures the headlines.

Amla century steers South Africa to big win

Hashim Amla’s 15th ODI hundred, his third against Zimbabwe and his fourth in six matches, led South Africa through a speedy start, sedate middle and ultimately to a sparkling finish, as the visitors took the series lead in Bulawayo

The Report by Firdose Moonda17-Aug-2014

Hashim Amla’s 15th ODI hundred, his third against Zimbabwe and his fourth in six matches, led South Africa through a speedy start, sedate middle and ultimately to a sparkling finish, as the visitors took the series lead in Bulawayo.Amla shared century stands with Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis, who both brought up fifties, as South Africa posted a towering 309 which Zimbabwe never realistically looked like reaching.Although the margin of defeat suggests Zimbabwe’s downfall was with the bat, they acquitted themselves fairly well against an attack mostly made up of South Africa’s reserves. It was with the ball, however, that they lost the game. With three rookies in their ranks, Zimbabwe’s pack lacked the pace to inject life into a slow wicket, and received no assistance from the healthy cloud covering in the morning. They could also not take proper advantage of the significant spin on offer. As a result, when the first signs of turn were evident in the 14th over, Zimbabwe had already failed to rein South Africa in. De Kock pounced on anything short and wide to score 42 of the 46 runs during a five-over period in which South Africa’s intent to stamp their authority was made clear.Teenager Luke Jongwe and the spin duo of Prosper Utseya and Williams pulled South Africa back and slowed de Kock down, even though his half-century came off 42 balls. John Nyumbu prevented de Kock from keeping his 100% conversion record when he offered flight and de Kock attempted to clear the offside field but found only Brendan Taylor at backward point. With de Kock’s dismissal, Zimbabwe enforced more of a stranglehold. Amla and Faf du Plessis, batting in the No.3 spot left vacant by Jacques Kallis, managed only 58 runs, without a single boundary in the 14 overs that followed the opening stand . Zimbabwe could have eventually claimed Amla’s wicket as a trophy for their efforts, but Shingi Masakadza put him down on 62 in his follow-through.It took South Africa until the final over of the power-play to reignite their run-scoring flame. Du Plessis took four boundaries off Jongwe, a slap through mid-wicket, a fortuitous edge, a loft over the covers and a drive through them – to push South Africa over the 200-run mark and help himself to a half-century off 69 balls. With 10 overs left to go, South Africa’s launched a final fifth assault which saw them plunder 101 runs to lift their run-rate above six. Amla was the main protagonist after du Plessis mistimed a shot he was aiming to hit over the legside, only to be caught at cover.Although de Villiers caught the eye with a pair of inventive reverse-slog sixes, Amla was still the one holding the innings together, as he brought up his century and finished off with his own couple of big hits over long-on and sweeper cover.Nyumbu, Shingi and Jongwe all lacked the control needed to avoid erring on a surface where the margins of mistake were small. Their lines and lengths did not challenge enough, and they were given a lesson in how they should have bowled by Kyle Abbott and Ryan McLaren. Abbott found movement and bounce, but he also kept it tight on off stump or banged it in short and threateningly, while McLaren was equally impeccable in his disciplines.Abbott went unrewarded, but his stranglehold helped seduce Vusi Sibanda into greeting a teasing line and length with an open-faced edge. McLaren had Richmond Mutumbami caught behind off a short ball, and when Taylor stepped out to chip Aaron Phangiso over cover, he was caught at long-on by David Miller instead. Zimbabwe were 34 for 3 and looked likely to collapse, but Hamilton Masakadza and Sean Williams held the hosts together.Their fifth-wicket stand began watchfully, but also had its nervous moments, especially when Hamilton edged Imran Tahir into the vacant area at second slip. The batsman, however, grew into confidence with a number of sweeps and cleverly-taken singles. Tahir was Zimbabwe’s main target as the spinner struggled to get back into the form he previously had shown, and offered too many full tosses.Hamilton scored his third consecutive half-century and seemed well set to turn it into something more substantial. He paddled and pulled Parnell in the second over of his second spell, but just as the stand reached 100, he cut one straight to du Plessis at point. Williams was also out immediately after a milestone. He swatted Tahir through mid-off for his fifty but then played almost the same shot Hamilton previously did.Zimbabwe’s middle and lower order clung on through their new captain Elton Chigumbura, but they may only take a sliver of solace from their fight. Chigumbura limped through his innings with what seemed an injured quad and he also did not bowl, casting a question mark over his availability for the rest of the series. He was the last man out when he hit straight to mid-on to give Phangiso a third wicket. With Tahir picking up as many scalps, the healthy competition South Africa’s have for places in their XI will mean as much to them as the win.
