'Showed we could win big moments' – du Plessis

Returning home after South Africa’s semifinal exit in the World T20, Faf du Plessis said his team had shown they could perform under pressure, a bugbear for them in previous world tournaments

South African captains have previously returned from major tournaments red-faced. Kepler Wessels, Hansie Cronje, Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers have had to explain why the teams they led crashed out in varyingly curious or embarrassing ways.Faf du Plessis came back rosy cheeked. Even though the group he was in charge of did not bring home the thing South African supporters wanted most – a trophy – they learned a lesson which du Plessis believes will ensure they capture a cup in the near future.”Previously we deserved a lot of criticism we got for the way we played in big moments. But now this team has showed we can perform under high pressure,” du Plessis said. “To get 170 in the semi-final after losing a wicket in the first over was a really good effort. In terms of playing big moments, this team has showed we can also do it.”South Africa’s batting has been their Achilles’ heel in major tournaments in the past. At the Champions Trophy last June, despite batting fairly well throughout the event, they slipped to 80 for 8 in the semi-final against England before staging a small recovery while their stumbling in their chasing a modest 222 against New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup in Dhaka remains fresh in the mind. When du Plessis arrived at the Shere Bangla Stadium to prepare for South Africa’s shootout against India, “the first thing I thought about was my scrum in the middle with the New Zealand players that day,” he said. Du Plessis was involved with the run-out of AB de Villiers that derailed the chase, back in 2011, and was involved in an on-field altercation with Kyle Mills which was the first sign of South Africa’s implosion.Even though that was more three years ago and du Plessis was a relative rookie at the time, the experience was fresh in his mind. South Africa wanted to guard against the mistakes they had made that day, and their many other fluffs before the final hurdle in previous tournaments. “Because we played the first week in Chittagong, we felt very confident when we went to Dhaka,” du Plessis said. “The past experience wasn’t too much of a factor so I didn’t feel it necessary to talk too much about it.”But when Quinton de Kock was dismissed at the end of the first over, to cap off a underwhelming showing in what du Plessis dubbed “the most pressure he has played under,” South Africa could have unraveled. Du Plessis was the next man in and knew he could not repeat the 2011 episode. He built partnerships with Hashim Amla and JP Duminy and South Africa posted what he thought was a winning total. It went wrong in the field where “too many extras,” cost South Africa and although du Plessis is concerned about the wides, he does not want that to detract from the way his team defended totals in their other three matches. South Africa’s matches against New Zealand, Netherlands and England went deep and they left it late to assert themselves. That they could set themselves up for a final assault through the man du Plessis said he considers South Africa’s man of the tournament, Imran Tahir, and could then close the deal with Dale Steyn represents progress for both du Plessis and coach Russell Domingo. Another South African side would not have won matches they seemed destined to lose. This one did and that experience will stand them in good stead for tournaments to come, starting with fifty-over World Cup next year.Du Plessis is not currently part of South Africa’s ODI set-up, after he was dropped ahead of the India series last December, but he hopes the door will still be open for him. He said one of the primary issues confronting the team’s preparation for the tournament is squad certainty, which will largely depend on the availability of Jacques Kallis. The all-rounder remains interested in turning out at the event and will play in most of the almost 30 ODIs South Africa have planned before the competition to work on combinations. For once, that could be the only thing South Africa have to worry about because the a lot of the extensive mental preparation they usually do would have been taken care of at this World T20. “I am very happy with the team’s performances. Apart from not winning, I was really proud of how everyone performed. For me it wasn’t a disappointment. We’ve proven to ourselves we can play in big moments,” du Plessis said.South Africa have seen first-hand that it can be done. They also watched Sri Lanka break an 18-year trophy drought to earn another title and du Plessis, in particular, was heartened by Sri Lanka’s performance. “I was very happy for Sri Lanka. I thought India were too strong for them but they proved me wrong. Where Sri Lanka did well is that they restricted India’s powerhouse batting,” he said. “I am really happy that they also had a chance to win something.” Now he will hope that South Africa, like Sri Lanka, will not have to lose in five finals before they finally win one.

England can hold heads high – Broad

Stuart Broad said England could leave the World T20 with their “heads high” despite going out of the competition after their second defeat in three games.

Stuart Broad said England could leave the World T20 with their “heads high” despite going out of the competition after their second defeat in three games. Broad admitted to the wearying effects of a long and arduous winter of touring but was looking forward to the opportunity for rest and recovery before England begin a “new era” in May.England lost by three runs to South Africa, ending their chances of reaching the semi-finals. A young and slightly experimental squad will play one more game, against Netherlands on Monday, before heading home as the ECB prepares to appoint a new head coach. Broad said he was uncertain about his own future as T20 captain and may miss the start of England’s season as he attempts to get over a chronic knee injury.”We’ve had a lot of positives come out of this World Cup but we can hold our heads high with some of the performances we’ve put in,” Broad said. “If we had got out of the group there would have been a lot of surprised people. We’re disappointed but we’ve done some good stuff with the squad available to us.”We lost key men through injury. We can hold heads up high and at the end of the day T20 is an entertainment business and I don’t think anybody is going to leave the ground today disappointed with nearly 400 runs scored, sixes, fours, and catches.”The county season gets underway next weekend, with the chance for several players to push for recognition as England look to begin afresh after losing heavily in Australia and following up with mixed results in the Caribbean and Bangladesh. Ashley Giles, the limited-overs coach, is favourite to succeed Andy Flower in charge of England across all three formats, with the ECB expected to hold interviews for the position in early April.”It’s going to be a new era of English cricket isn’t it?” Broad said. “It has been a tough winter. We’ve been away a huge amount of time so there are some fantastic opportunities available for players in the summer. We don’t know the shake-up of the Test side but you know the opportunities will arise and that’s exciting for players to be involved in. I expect to see some excellent performances this summer, guys really desperate to play, hungry to succeed for England and we’ll have to play some good cricket to beat Sri Lanka and India.”It’s an exciting time to be part of English cricket. Change is exciting from time to time. It’s been a really tough winter, we’ve not had a huge amount of success. Australia was a really tough tour, back-to-back Ashes over the past nine months is as tough as it gets for a cricketer, not just on the field but off it too with all the hype that comes with Ashes cricket. So it has been a draining winter and I’ll have to be honest, I’m looking forward to a bit of a break come Tuesday.”Broad has been T20 captain since 2011, when England experimented with a tripartite system. He has twice led England at the World T20, both times on the subcontinent, with the next tournament due to be held in India in 2016. Asked about continuing in the role, he said: “I don’t know, there’s going to be a decision made on coaching staff so there might be a few changes in the next two months or so. I’m probably going to be unavailable for the start of the season in one-day cricket to sort my knee out.”A period of rehabilitation will be required for Broad to get over his patellar tendonitis, an injury that has resulted from his heavy workload over the winter, and discussions with whoever is appointed to take charge of England will determine the way forward. England begin their season with an ODI against Scotland on May 9, followed by limited-overs series against Sri Lanka. The first Test of the summer begins on June 12.”I need a rehab period on my tendonitis, which is generally about an eight-week period so whether I take just four weeks in April to play in May and then take a couple of months after the season I don’t know but it’s got to the stage where it’s really sore and I need it sorting out. You know in international cricket you can’t perform at your best when you’re carrying an injury. We’ve managed it pretty well but it’s in the hands of the medical staff and a bit of negotiation with the head coach when that’s decided.”England made 193 for 7 against South Africa, their joint fifth-highest score batting second in T20s, despite no one scoring more than 38. The total surpassed their record chase against Sri Lanka from two nights ago but England paid for conceding 55 runs from the last three overs, as AB de Villiers scorched his way to an unbeaten 69 off 28 balls. Broad credited de Villiers for a match-winning innings as the bowlers, particularly Jade Dernbach, again came in for punishment.”We’ve come up three runs short and there’s some pretty clear ways we could have stopped those three runs,” Broad said. “We didn’t particularly field well, but that can happen in these conditions. We didn’t have the one guy going to get the Hales-like knock like he did the other day or 60 or 70 you realistically need in these sorts of chases.”But sometimes you have to hold your hands up and that knock from AB de Villiers is as good as you’ll ever see. He hits the ball 360 degrees and targeted the short boundary with fantastic success. We tried to go for yorkers but in these conditions it’s unrealistic to get your yorkers consistent with a bar of soap. He took it away from us in those last few overs. If we’d been chasing 170 it would have been pretty gettable.”

Prior, Stokes hope to prove fitness ahead of Lord's Test

Ben Stokes and Matt Prior, two players whom the England selectors viewed as likely starters in the first Test against Sri Lanka, hope to return to action towards the end of the month in a bid to prove their fitness for the Lord’s match in June

Ben Stokes and Matt Prior, two players whom the England selectors viewed as likely starters in the first Test against Sri Lanka, hope to return to action towards the end of the month in a bid to prove their fitness for the Lord’s match in June.Stokes has not played since breaking his hand after the final T20 against West Indies, in March, an injury that ruled him out of the World T20. The healing process has been slow but James Whitaker, the national selector, said the aim was for him to be playing some form of cricket within the next weeks although he remained cautious about a return to the international stage.”He’s on the road to recovery. He’s had a positive scan only yesterday so it’s slowly slowly at the moment, more pressure each day and monitor it over the next week or two,” Whitaker after the announcement of England’s T20 and ODI squads to face Sri Lanka. “But he will be reintroduced to cricket over the next 10 or so days, very gentle, netting, perhaps an academy game, but he’s another one we have to take good care of in the future.”We’re always balancing aren’t we, the risk and reward, but better they come back fully fit so it helps them regain form. Let’s get them back fully fit first, I think that’s the right way to go.”Prior has not played since Sussex’s opening Championship match of the season, against Middlesex at Hove, where he scored a hundred but did not keep wicket, due to an achilles injury. He has recently been training with an anti-gravity running machine to try to aid his recovery and is pencilled in to play against Middlesex from May 26.If his comeback is delayed much further it is unlikely England will be able to select him for the first Test, which then leaves a conundrum over who will keep wicket. Jonny Bairstow remains the man in possession having kept in the Sydney Test in January, and has regained the gloves for Yorkshire in this round of Championship matches, while Jos Buttler made a half-century in tricky conditions against Middlesex but concerns over the pair’s glovework remain.”There’s a number of viable candidates for the role – the guy that holds the spot at the moment is keeping wicket for Yorkshire,” Whitaker said. “Matt Prior is injured and coming back and hopes to put himself into contention for the first Test by playing a couple of games. He decided rather than come back sooner and just batting let’s try and clear it up so when he does come back he can keep and bat at the same time.”Whitaker also had words of encouragement for Liam Plunkett who has impressed with his pace and stamina for Yorkshire this season, although said he had not come into serious consideration for the limited-overs squads.”He has made good progress and if he carries on like this he will be talked about more and more. It is great to see him playing well and you have to pay compliments to Jason Gillespie and Martyn Moxon because he looks a reinvigorated force.”Full credit to Kevin Shine and all those guys at Loughborough for working with him on the performance programme in the winter and selecting him for the Lions. He really did a good job on some flat wickets, his energy was fantastic and he got some vital breakthroughs and his batting was a bonus at the end. Yorkshire have made a great signing.”It is all about his state of mind. He is very relaxed now, his bowling his terrific, and long may it continue. The more options we have for all forms of the game the better, especially at that pace.”

Perigoso reencontro…

No entanto, estava cumprindo suspensão diante do Peru.

WILLIAN

Repórter do Depor (PER)

O atual grupo vem ainda melhor.

Denly breaks Middlesex horror run

Middlesex have been so rotten in the NatWest T20 Blast that Lord’s refused to host their latest match. Well, not exactly

Middlesex have been so rotten in the NatWest T20 Blast that Lord’s refused to host their latest match. Well, not exactly, but while Middlesex hopped over the Thames to borrow The Oval for this fixture, a supermarket’s corporate event was being hosted at HQ.Brian Lara was the star at Lord’s and Middlesex fans may have preferred a peak over the Grace Gates than a trip to the southern wastelands of SE11. Not many did. The crowd numbered few more than a healthy Championship attendance. Understandable given the quality of cricket Middlesex have produced in the shortest format this season, but a change of home ground did the trick and they snapped a run of six consecutive defeats. Comfortably too, chasing 153 with more than two overs to spare.Middlesex seemed to need Professor Higgins from My Fair Lady to transform their T20 cricket. They found a Higgins, if not a professor: handing a debut to 19-year-old Ryan Higgins, who has been in excellent form for the second XI.It was evident in the timing and confidence of his strokemaking. He lined up Craig Overton in the final over of the Powerplay for two sixes into the OCS stand and just when Somerset had regained their footing through Max Waller and Craig Meschede, lifted Waller over extra-cover. A flick behind square leg for four in the 17th over put the chase beyond doubt. But Higgins was the aggressive foil to Joe Denly’s thrusting epee. He was a different player to the one who averaged 12.16 from six innings before this knock. He more-than-doubled his season’s tally with an unbeaten 98 in 60 balls. He began by lifting Peter Trego into the pavilion and from that found his eye to control the chase. Two sixes over midwicket in the 14th over brought the requirement down to almost a run-a-ball from the last six overs and when Alfonso Thomas – the master of death bowling – threatened some pressure with three dot balls, Denly carved two boundaries backward of square on the off side.Denly and Higgins needed a Little Bit O’Luck – two chances falling short of fielders at long-off and extra-cover – but their century stand at more than nine-an-over deserved it. The Middlesex supporters were owed it.Denly outgunned Craig Kieswetter, whose 74 in 59 balls led Somerset to 152 which is often defended in domestic T20 at The Oval. Kieswetter has, for the second season, showed how dangerous his sharp eye and quick hands can be. Here, he became the first batsman to pass 300 runs in the competition this season. His innings was top and tailed by bursts of boundaries. In the Powerplay, he flicked James Harris to the midwicket fence, then hammered him straight for four more having given himself room outside leg stump. He was forced to be circumspect during the middle overs against chiefly the clever left-arm spin of Ravi Patel. But in the closing overs he finally freed himself against Patel to strike him over long-off for six and took two fours from the penultimate over.Kieswetter’s knock mirrored Somerset’s progress; 41 were taken off the first five overs and 48 from the final five. The middle 10 saw the Middlesex slower bowlers, Patel, Neil Dexter and Ollie Rayner, gain control: they conceded only two fours and a six during that period.Patel is Middlesex’s leading wicket-taker in the T20 Blast. He tempted both Chris Jones – playing instead of Marcus Trescothick who picked up a groin injury in the last Championship match and was not risked here with Sunday’s fixture at Trent Bridge in mind – and an over later, Peter Trego, into sweeping at the short leg-side boundary and holing out to Dawid Malan off top edges.Middlesex could not hold the whole innings together. Together with Kieswetter’s late kick, James Hildreth provided 26 in 13 balls, including consecutive reverse-swept fours off Rayner in an 18th over which yielded 14. But Denly and Higgins ensured the late progress was not enough.
