Pietersen 'fully committed' to England

Kevin Pietersen may have pulled off a career-saving performance by unconditionally committing himself to play for England in all formats

George Dobell11-Aug-2012Kevin Pietersen may have pulled off a career-saving performance as outrageous as anything he has achieved on the pitch by unconditionally committing himself to play for England in all formats of the game and apologising for the behaviour that led to speculation about dressing room rifts and his premature retirement. In another development late on Saturday, the ECB announced that the squad for the third Test against South Africa would be delayed until 2.30pm on Sunday having originally been set for 9.30am, inviting the belief that England’s selectors, having picked the squad for the final Test at Lord’s, had been forced back into an emergency session.Pietersen, who was facing the prospect of being dropped by England following a series of incidents that appeared to have driven a wedge between him and the rest of the England team, has retracted his request to play a full IPL season, reversed his retirement from international limited-overs cricket and withdrawn many of the comments he made in an emotional press conference following the second Test at Leeds. In a personally arranged video interview, Pietersen expressed his unconditional return for England in all forms of the game.”I want to commit to all forms of cricket for England because I love playing for England,” Pietersen said. “I am wanting to play all three forms of cricket again for England: the ODIs against South Africa in a couple of weeks and the T20 World Cup if I am selected. I want to make myself available for every single format of cricket for England.”I am absolutely not insisting on playing the full IPL season. I am taking that all back. I will not be playing the full IPL. I will come back and play in the Tests against New Zealand next year.”I’ve realised what is important to be. I’ve realised I can be happy. I’ve realised how much I love playing for England. I’ve realised that the last three or four days would be a sad way to go after all the happiness I’ve enjoyed. I’d hate to leave playing for England and I’d hate to leave all the spectators and fans this way.”The stubbornness I’ve got sometimes – which is probably not a good thing as well – has led me to try to believe myself for too long and I’ve got to a point now where I’ve gone: play for England. This is what you love and this is what I want to do.”I am fully committed and passionate about playing for England. I want to play for England. That is why I want to get back playing in all three formats of the game for England. I love doing what I do and I don’t want to disappoint people.”I’ve had a change of heart because of the reasons I stated. I love playing cricket for England.”Money is not everything to me. I love winning for England. I loved the runs I scored at Headingley. I can’t wait to play in Straussy’s 100th Test next week. These things make me happy. Winning makes me happy.”I understand that I have a short career. I can’t do this until I’m 40. I have a young family and I’m the provider. I need to maximise my opportunities financially in order to have protection in later life. It’s not all about money. I love playing for England and the runs I score for England mean so much more to me.”Pietersen accepted that his comments in Monday night’s press conference following the second South Africa Test at Leeds had been emotional and unhelpful, but said he had held long discussions with a teammate in which many problems had been resolved.”There’s a press conference I did on Monday which I didn’t handle in the right way,” Pietersen said. “I was very emotional. I am who I am. I do make mistakes.”The mood in the dressing room, in the last 24 hours, has been sorted out. I had a really good long chat with a team-mate of mine yesterday. We went through everything. We went through differences. We went through everything. I finished that conversation a very happy bloke and somebody who can’t wait to meet with the team on Tuesday.”I didn’t handle the press conference well at all. I was in an emotional state. I did think there was a possibility it might be my penultimate Test. I said things I shouldn’t have said. I know I have to clear things up. I want to clear things up.”I need to pull towards the team. The team will need to pull towards me. I believe, in the last 24 hours, that’s been done.”Words are one thing, of course. It is Pietersen’s actions that will be scrutinised over the coming weeks and months by a dressing room that is somewhat jaded by recent events. There will be those in England’s limited-overs teams, in particular, whose own positions are jeopardised by Pietersen’s return. The World T20 team was picked at Edgbaston on Friday and must be announced by August 18. Whether Pietersen’s backtracking has come in time remains to be seen. But there can be no doubt that any England team is considerably strengthened by a Pietersen that feels respected, needed and appreciated. The brinksmanship between the ECB and Pietersen took their relationship to the edge over recent days but, once again, the uncompromising attitudes of Andy Flower would appear to have been vindicated.

Milton Mendes define triunfo do Sport: 'Fomos superiores'

Conseguimos superar, eles tentaram fazer a parte deles e nós, a nossa.

Nossos homens fechavam as linhas e obrigamos o Vasco a rifar a bola.

Gauchan claims extraordinary figures

Round-up of the ICC World Cricket League Division Four matches in Kuala Lumpur

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Sep-2012Nepal maintained their unbeaten start with a massive 10-wicket victory against hosts Malaysia. Shakti Gauchan, the legspinner, claimed the extraordinary figures of 3 for 2 in 10 overs, a spell that included eight maidens after Amrit Bhattarai had set the ball rolling with two wickets in two balls. From 52 for 3 in the 12th over, Malaysia lost their remaining seven wickets for 17 runs in a painful 20 overs. In reply, Nepal needed little more than 12 overs to speed to their target and Anil Mandal ended unbeaten on 41.Reflecting on his mind-boggling figures, Gauchan said: “I didn’t think much about my performance before the game, but my objective was to bowl in the right area which I did during the game and it turned out to be my best bowling performance.”Captain Paras Khadka added: “It was another great bowling display from the team, especially from Gauchan and the other opening pairs. Although we had a small target to chase, I am happy with the batting performance of the openers as the batter and won the match for us convincingly. We still can’t relax after this win and will work hard to win the rest of our matches.”USA also crushed Tanzania with an incredible 246 balls to spare as they raced to a seven-wicket victory at Kinrara Academy Oval. USA’s bowlers shared around their success, with Usman Shuja taking three wickets, as Tanzania crumbled to 92 all out in the 30th over. The run chase did not even reach the tenth over. Opener Steven Taylor clubbed 46 off 22 balls, including four sixes, as USA needed less than half a Twenty20 innings to seal victory – and a handsome boost to their net run-rate.The USA captain, Steve Massiah, said: “It was professional approach today and things went according to the game plan and we executed brilliantly what we had planned. We knew how critical this match was going to be for us and winning it with a big margin will help us to boost out net run-rate.”In the most evenly contest target of the day, Singapore beat Denmark by four wickets to keep themselves in the mid-table battle. Chasing 174 they relied on contributions all through their top order with the first five batsmen making between 23 and 39. The innings was always under control and Munish Arora, the 41-year-old, guided the team home. Earlier, the Denmark innings had subsided from 128 for 3 and they ended up not using 21 deliveries. Shehzad Ahmed made 50 off 100 balls but when he fell they fell away swiftly as the last seven wickets fell for 45.

NO VASCO…

Timão melhor no início

Stuart Meaker has been drafted into the England squad as cover for the injured Steven Finn. Meaker, the 23-year-old Surrey fast bowler, will fly to India on Saturday and is expected to play in the final warm-up game before the first Test, subject to obtaining a visa.Finn suffered a thigh strain in the opening overs of the first game of the tour against India A. While England are yet to announce the results of the subsequent scans, the call-up of Meaker suggests Finn is most unlikely to be fit for the first Test in Ahmedabad on November 15. Graham Onions replaced Finn in the side for the second warm-up game, against Mumbai A, but England have now concluded they require reinforcement. It is understood England are keen to rest Stuart Broad for the final warm-up game, against Haryana at Ahmadabad from November 8, before the Test. Broad also missed the first warm-up game, which raises questions about his match fitness. While Meaker, whose international experience is limited to just two ODIs, does not possess the height of Finn, he does bowl at a similar pace. He remains the fastest bowler recorded at England’s National Cricket Performance Centre at Loughborough.Meaker’s South African background – he was born in Pietermaritzburg – will revive claims that England are reliant on imported talent, but his family moved to England when he was just 12 and he has progressed through the Surrey system. He was Surrey’s leading wicket-taker in the 2012 Championship season – he claimed 44 wickets at 22.56 apiece in 10 games with a strike-rate of a wicket every 38.7 deliveries – and has the ability to swing the new and old ball both ways.Quite how match fit he is at present remains to be seen. He has been resting since the end of the English domestic season over a month ago and only returned to fitness training at Lord’s in the last few days.Whatever happens to Finn, Meaker will remain in India until meeting up with other members of the England Performance Programme squad who leave the UK on November 19.

AB de Villiers pulls out of New Zealand T20s

AB de Villiers has pulled out of South Africa’s Twenty20 internationals against New Zealand in December, citing the need for extra rest before the Tests in January

AB de Villiers has pulled out of South Africa’s Twenty20 internationals at home against New Zealand in December, citing the need for extra rest before the Tests in January. Justin Ontong, the Cape Cobras captain, has been called into the squad.”It’s been an exhausting few months and I feel that I need some extra rest before the Test series,” De Villiers said. “It’s for this reason that I have put in the request and I’m grateful to the team management for supporting this decision.”When the squad was announced on December 13, South Africa’s selectors had named Faf du Plessis as captain in order to reduce the workload on de Villiers, who was included as a player. Quinton de Kock, who was part of South Africa’s Under-19 squad for the 2012 World Cup, had been designated as wicketkeeper for the T20s, and ESPNCricinfo understands he will also keep in the one-dayers after the Tests, although the ODI squad has not been named yet.De Villiers has a history of back problems that have worsened because of wicketkeeping, and this request for a break will fuel speculation that he is in trouble again. After the World Twenty20 in September, de Villiers needed three weeks of rehabilitation for his back, and South Africa’s management denied the injury has recurred again.”There is nothing imminently wrong with his back, it is just about managing workload,” Mohammed Moosajee said, the team manager, told ESPNcricinfo. “The plan is to rotate players like Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla because of the schedule. Morne and Dale will probably only play one or two matches each. With AB, it’s about getting his mindset right and getting him energised. It’s physical and mental.”De Villiers had complained of stiffness and fatigue after playing in the domestic one-day cup playoff match on December 9. Moosajee said that could be a result of jetlag, as the team had only arrived from Australia four days before. De Villiers’ role in the game could also have contributed to the fatigue. He scored a century and fielded for the entire duration of Cobras’ innings because Heino Kuhn kept wicket.Three days after that match, De Villiers said the game was “hard on my body,” and that he was glad he was a wicketkeeper for South Africa “because the time in the field was tiring.”However, ESPNcricinfo understands wicketkeeping is partly responsible for de Villiers’ back injuries. He became the permanent Test wicketkeeper after Mark Boucher retired and wants to continue in the role. A source close to Cricket South Africa said de Villiers had been initially reluctant to take on the job but had “changed his mind” since. With Tests the focus for de Villiers, despite his role as limited-overs captain, he will be rested when the schedule allows, although he will play the IPL.De Villiers’ replacement Ontong captained Cobras to the final of the domestic one-day cup. He scored 268 runs in 12 matches at an average of 44.66. He was part of South Africa’s squad at the World T20, although he did not play, and will lead the A side in a practice match against New Zealand this afternoon.”Justin has been in our limited-overs plans for some time now and he has underlined his worth during the recent one-day cup, when he excelled as a finisher,” Andrew Hudson, the convenor of selectors, said. “As we all know he is also an outstanding fielder with his direct hits and a more than useful spin bowler. We are fortunate to have a player of his calibre to replace AB and the loss of one is certainly an opportunity for the other.”Revised Twenty20 squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Farhaan Behardien, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, Justin Ontong, Rory Kleinveldt, Richard Levi, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Robin Peterson, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe.
