Du Plessis to replace Gayle at Somerset

Faf du Plessis will be joining Somerset – subject to all necessary clearance – as their second overseas player for the FLt20

George Dobell03-May-2012Faf du Plessis will be joining Somerset – subject to all necessary clearance – as their second overseas player for the FLt20. Du Plessis, the 27-year-old South Africa allrounder, will replace Chris Gayle, who has pulled out of his deal with the club in order to make himself available for the West Indies. As things stand, Somerset hope that du Plessis will be available for the duration of the competition. He may, however, be involved in South Africa’s five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe that runs until June 24. Somerset’s T20 campaign begins on June 13, meaning du Plessis could miss as many as five games.”We have signed him subject to clearance,” Brian Rose, Somerset’s director of cricket, told ESPNcricinfo. “We are waiting to hear whether he will be required by South Africa but, even if he is, we are unlikely to sign another overseas player.”

Repete? No primeiro turno, San-São fez Tricolor começar a acreditar

Diego voltou a marcar gols contra América-MG e Botafogo e o time completou três vitórias seguidas no Brasileirão.

Joe Denly and Chris Rogers helped Middlesex claim their first CB40 Group A victory of the season after they crushed the Netherlands by eight wickets. The duo put on an unbeaten 166, with Denly finishing four runs shy of a century and Rogers making 83 not out as the visitors overhauled the Netherlands’ 212 for 9 with 16 balls to spare.Paul Stirling was the pick of the Middlesex bowlers with 4 for 27, Steven Crook picked up two wickets and Gareth Berg ran three batsmen out as the hosts were restricted to a manageable total in Voorburg. It was the Netherlands’ first loss of their CB40 campaign after they had beaten Worcestershire and Gloucestershire in their opening two matches. After being put into bat, Netherlands got off to a decent start, with openers Stephan Myburgh and Michael Swart reaching a fifty partnership in the 10th over.Although the latter was run out by Berg for 23 immediately after, Myburgh and Cameron Borgas guided the hosts to 114 for 1. Yet Stirling removed Borgas with his third delivery and then accounted for Myburgh, who struck eight fours in his 66, in his next over.Wickets continued to flow freely thereafter, although Mudassar Bukhari ensured the Netherlands did reach a competitive total. Burkhari, the Pakistan-born allrounder blasted three fours and two sixes and had made 39 off just 30 balls before he was the eighth man out in the 39th over, with Berg claiming another run out. Yet Bukhari’s efforts ensured Middlesex did not simply blow through the lower order as the Netherlands reached 212 for 9.Timm van der Gugten then ensured the visitors got off to a disastrous start in their reply, bowling Dawid Malan for a first-ball duck. But the wicket proved to be a rare highlight in the field for the Netherlands.Stirling followed up his wonderful bowling efforts with a quickfire 28 before being dismissed by Swart in the 10th over.Any hopes the Netherlands had of a collapse were dismissed by the solidity of both Denly and Rogers. Denly was unusually subdued in the early period of his innings yet he gained in confidence and finished on 96 off 117 balls.Rogers settled into his stride immediately and he brought up the winning runs in the 38th over with his sixth four to ensure Middlesex bounced back from last week’s home defeat to Gloucestershire in style.

No facilities for uncontracted players – SLC proposal

Cricketers not contracted with Sri Lanka Cricket will no longer be allowed to use the board’s facilities, according to a proposal by the board’s executive committee

ESPNcricinfo staff22-May-2012Cricketers not contracted with Sri Lanka Cricket will no longer be allowed to use the board’s facilities, including medical assistance, the board’s executive committee has decided. SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga confirmed these details to ESPNcricinfo. The decision has so far met with a positive response. “I believe it’s fair enough,” Ken de Alwis, the spokesman of the Sri Lanka Cricketers Association told . “If a player signs a contract, then he becomes an employee of SLC. But if a player does not sign it, then SLC has no obligation to look after his interests.”The SLC will submit the contract proposals to the association.Fast bowler Lasith Malinga didn’t sign an SLC contract last year but received medical assistance from the board when he returned to Sri Lanka briefly for treatment during the current IPL season, in which he’s representing Mumbai Indians. Malinga plays for Sri Lanka in limited-overs internationals but has retired from Test cricket. Nishantha Ranatunga, at the time of Malinga’s treatment, had said: “Though he has no central contract, it is the SLC’s duty to look after the national players.” The latest proposal by the SLC, though, suggests a chance of stance.

Morgan calls for English T20 revamp

Eoin Morgan has said that English domestic Twenty20 cricket has fallen “so far behind” rival leagues such as the IPL and Big Bash

Eoin Morgan has said that English domestic Twenty20 cricket has fallen “so far behind” rival leagues such as the IPL and Big Bash that the time has come for a major revamp of the competition to ensure England can stay at the top of the world rankings. This season marks the 10th anniversary of the introduction of Twenty20 cricket, which began in England in 2003, but Morgan, who is the country’s highest-ranked Twenty20 batsman at No. 2 in the ICC lists, does not believe the current Friends Life competition prepares players for the challenges of the international game even though England are ranked No. 1.Although Morgan did not play a match for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2012 edition of the IPL, he drew on his experiences of the event over the last three years as well as drawing lessons from what Australia have done with the introduction of a franchise system.”I certainly think it’s got to the stage where it’s so far behind now that something needs to happen,” he said. “I’ve been in Australia when the Big Bash has happened and played the IPL and have seen the impact they have had. It’s on a different scale.”Morgan said that England now lead the way in preparing Test cricketers – with countries such as Australia now implementing many of the methods used by the ECB – but does not think the same strides have been made in the shorter format by the nation that first unveiled the 20-over format at professional level.”A lot of the time I was growing up, everything about English cricket was chasing Australia because they were No. 1 for a long time, had great cricketers and they had the infrastructure,” he said while promoting the Cricket Foundation’s StreetChance programme at his home club in England, Finchley CC in North London.”We’ve now overtaken that in longer format in producing Test cricketers which is fantastic but I don’t know what happened with the Twenty20. The IPL is in its fifth year and the Big Bash will be in its second so it won’t take much to catch up and I certainly think it’s needed, especially as we are Twenty20 champions.”Morgan conceded that English cricket does not have to carbon-copy what has happened in India and Australia, but he gave a strong indication that he thinks franchise-style cricket is the way forward for Twenty20 in this country.”It doesn’t need to be exactly the same to either the IPL or Big Bash, it has to work for English cricket,” he said. “With our young Twenty20 team at the moment I see young players coming through and if we had an infrastructure in place with, say, eight or nine teams and huge international stars playing you would already have had the likes of Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow rubbing shoulders with great players like Muralitharan or Kallis and not being thrown into a World Cup game and being unfamiliar with the pressure.”Muttiah Muralitharan is actually one of the big-name overseas players who is currently appearing in the Friends Life t20, but it is true to say that the tournament has struggled to pull in a huge quantity of the game’s major drawcards. This is down to a combination of the international schedule – for example Chris Gayle and Kieron Pollard are playing for West Indies and Saeed Ajmal, who was set to play for Worcestershire, is in Sri Lanka – but there is also feeling that the tournament is just not as enticing. Morgan, though, is confident that a new-look tournament would encourage many more overseas players to sign.”The benefits would be massive and I would like to see change,” he said. “It’s the way forward to improve standards. Other Test nations love coming to England to tour, that’s a massive attraction and there would be other financial benefits, too, because the superstars at the tournament.”Despite Morgan’s concerns England are producing cricketers who are making a mark on Twenty20 game at a young age: Bairstow has made a promising start to his career, Steven Finn has slotted in with impressive results with the new ball and Hales scored 99 in the international against West Indies on Sunday.”Alex played superbly and chasing 170-odd is a hell of a feat against such a skill West Indian team who will probably be one of the favourites for World Cup,” he said. “It gives huge confidence to a young side but there’s a heck of a lot of work to do to compare the side now to one that will face very different conditions in Sri Lanka. We’ve a long way to go but it’s a good platform.”Sport England is investing £1million Lottery funding in the ‘Cricket Foundation’s ‘StreetChance supported by Barclays Spaces for Sports’ urban cricket initiative to help young adults stay in sport and stay away from crime and anti-social behaviour www.streetchance.org’
