– É obrigação nossa ganhar a partida.

Reencontrar a melhor forma é urgente no Alvinegro.

We will hit the bat high – Steyn

South Africa’s fast bowlers will aim to make things awkward for Sri Lanka’s batsmen by hitting the bat higher than the visitors are used to, Dale Steyn, South Africa’s spearhead, has said

South Africa’s fast bowlers will aim to make things awkward for Sri Lanka’s batsmen by hitting the bat higher than the visitors are used to, Dale Steyn, South Africa’s spearhead, has said. Steyn said he hoped to exploit the South African pitches, known for their pace and bounce, as much as possible against a side who have not toured the country for nine years.”In the subcontinent, where these guys grow up, the ball hits the bat from the stickers down,” Steyn said. “We want to hit the bat on areas that are unfamiliar for them and make them feel uncomfortable, like maybe a little higher up.”With the threat of balls buzzing around their ears or having to be fended off at chest height, Sri Lanka would have liked to get more batting time during their warm-up match against the South African Invitation XI from December 9-11. The first day was washed out after downpours in Benoni and the Invitation XI opted to bat on the second, leaving the Sri Lankans with less than two sessions of batting time on the third day. Openers Tillakaratne Dilshan and Tharanga Paranavitana both enjoyed fruitful innings but the rest of the line-up are without significant game time on South African pitches.”It was pretty unfortunate that we couldn’t get a full day of batting,” Angelo Matthews, the Sri Lanka allrounder, said. “But we are very pleased that the top order is in form. [The rest of us] need to adapt to the conditions very quickly if we are to perform well. The main thing we need to do is adjust to the bounce and the pace.”Kumar Sangakkara, who is expected to recover from a torn webbing in his right hand in time for the first Test, said Sri Lanka are up for the challenge of facing South Africa’s pace attack, which has been touted as one of the team’s finest ever ones. Steyn and Morne Morkel have been joined by Vernon Philander, who took 14 wickets in his debut series against Australia last month. Philander maintains a nagging line with the new ball and attacks in a different way to Steyn, who relies on swing. Steyn said the contrast between Philander’s and his styles had worked for South Africa so far. “Vernon is the kind of bowler who is fantastic to share the new ball with. We call him Vern McGrath now because he just nibbles it around all the time.”Using Philander to open the bowling is a change from the usual Steyn and Morkel pairing, but it is a move that Steyn said gives South Africa an added advantage. “The next guy to step up is Morne Morkel who bowls thunderbolts from 10 foot up. And then we have Jacques Kallis who has shown in domestic matches this year that he can still rev it up to 140. It’s nice to have guys who follow up the new ball with pace.”Legspinner Imran Tahir is expected to complete the line-up although Hashim Amla said “there would be a temptation” to go into the first Test in Centurion with an all-pace attack. That would mean either handing a debut to 21-year-old fast bowler Marchant de Lange, who has played just 14 first-class matches, or playing an extra batsman.Whatever combination South Africa choose, they will go into the match with an attack that is significantly more dynamic than the one they had when they last played against Sri Lanka, in 2006. Then, South Africa’s bowlers were made to toil as Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene put on a record partnership of 624 in Colombo. Steyn shuddered when asked what he remembered about that tour and said he is certain there will not be a repeat. “I have moved on with my life, I don’t really want to talk about that. But what I can say is that it’s going to be a lot harder to score world-record partnerships in South Africa.”

Hosts eager to seal series

ESPNcricinfo previews the third Australia-India Test in Perth

Big PictureOnce again, Australia arrive in Perth with a 2-0 series lead over India. This time, however, the circumstances are mightily different from those that faced the combatants in 2008. Then the dust was settling from Monkeygate, now the only dust is that of India’s fragile batting, which has folded all too easily in four innings so far. Australia’s 2008 team were also agitated and distracted by the Harbhajan Singh/Andrew Symonds case, and senior players spent as much time deliberating over that issue as they did worrying about how to defeat India at the WACA. This time Michael Clarke’s team is happier, more settled and certainly better focussed on the task of sealing the series. India seem to be lacking the spark that they had entering the ’08 match, fuelled as it was by their defence of Harbhajan, who has not made this tour. The hosts, of course, are not entirely without problems. The inexperienced top order was brushed aside by Zaheer Khan in Sydney, and will need to fight for traction in Perth, while the spinner Nathan Lyon will want to be more impactful than he had been in Melbourne and Sydney. That is, if he is chosen – a well-grassed surface is tempting Clarke and the selectors to consider including Mitchell Starc as well as Ryan Harris for the Test, as a four-man pace attack provided Australia with their only win of last summer’s horrid Ashes campaign.India, meanwhile, have happy memories of the victory in ’08, but appear far less galvanised than four summers ago. Ishant Sharma returns to the place where he first made his name, twice dismissing Ricky Ponting in that match, the second time at the end of a spell remembered by all who saw it. So far on this tour he has bowled better than his figures suggest, and may need to bowl a fraction fuller on the bouncy WACA deck to gain the wickets his team needs from him. Among the batsmen, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman are under particular pressure to offer decent support for Sachin Tendulkar, who has looked in fine touch so far, even as he is continually dogged by the barrier of 100 international centuries.Form guideAustralia: WWLWW (most recent first)
India: LLDWW
Players to watch …Ryan Harris is at once Australia’s most capable pace bowler and also the team’s most tenuous. His battered body succumbed to a hamstring problem in Sri Lanka then a hip ailment in South Africa, cancelling him out of the Test plans for the remainder of 2011 as the team performance manager Pat Howard decreed that Harris had to get fit enough to bowl for five days on the run. To that end he has been eased back into the squad, training in Melbourne, carrying out the duties of 12th man in Sydney and now into the team in Perth where his nine wickets helped bring England briefly to heel last summer. In the absence of the injured James Pattinson, Harris’ speed and swing will ask the most impertinent questions of India’s batsmen – provided he can stay physically sound.Depending on what you read, Virender Sehwag is either the reason India’s tour is going badly, or the best man to pull his team-mates out of their current slumber. His fearless approach to batting has so far looked chancy in Australia, resulting in one Melbourne innings that was exciting but edgy and three cheap dismissals thereafter. Sehwag has battled to find his best batting rhythm against a concerted attack on his off stump, and can expect more of the same in Perth. However the WACA ground is a place where free-spirited openers can score with tremendous speed once they get going – see Roy Fredericks’ effort in 1975-76 for ultimate proof – and Sehwag is well and truly due for a major score.Team newsThe only conundrum for Australia is whether to play the spin of Nathan Lyon or the pace and swing of Mitchell Starc. Though he battled for consistency in his first two Tests against New Zealand, Starc has shown the benefits of time spent with Wasim Akram this week, bending the ball late on a full length, with his high-arm action affording plenty of bounce. Lyon, though, is the sort of spin bowler who may benefit from the WACA’s bounce and breeze.Australia 1 David Warner, 2 Ed Cowan, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Ricky Ponting, 5 Michael Clarke (capt), 6 Michael Hussey, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Peter Siddle, 9 Ryan Harris, 10 Ben Hilfenhaus, 11 Nathan Lyon/Mitchell Starc.Virat Kohli and VVS Laxman are expected to hold their spots ahead of Rohit Sharma, while Vinay Kumar’s fast medium may be considered if India decide on an all-pace attack.India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag, 2 Gautam Gambhir, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman 6 Virat Kohli, 7 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 8 R Ashwin/Vinay Kumar, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh Yadav.Pitch and conditionsIndia took some getting used to how green the WACA pitch appeared when they first arrived in Perth, but the January heat should allow it to dry out sufficiently to provide a fair Test surface. Close observation has revealed the grass to be of finer consistency than last year’s, which may mean less seam movement than was gained during the Ashes match. Either way, there should be plenty of pace and bounce on offer.Stats and trivia Michael Clarke, Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey are the only current members of the Australian team to have taken part in the 2008 Perth Test By contrast, India have retained Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, MS Dhoni and Ishant Sharma Tendulkar returns to the scene of one of his most celebrated centuries – 114 against Craig McDermott, Merv Hughes, Mike Whitney and Paul Reiffel on a speedy pitch in 1992 A win or a draw would return the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australian hands for the first time since 2008Quotes”Everyone who comes and watches cricket in Perth wants to see batsmen ducking and weaving out of the way of short balls, batsmen getting great benefit for their shots down the ground, lots of square-of-the-wicket shots being played. If we get a fast, bouncy one [surface] this week, then I’m sure with the batting talent on display you’ll see a lot of great highlights throughout.”
“It’s always nice to come and play in these conditions. It’s like an Australian team coming and playing on a rank turner in India, and winning a Test match. We would like to do the same thing again.”

Marsh to be replaced by Ford as coach

Sri Lanka Cricket are set to replace current coach Geoff Marsh with Graham Ford, the former South Africa coach, ESPNcricinfo has learned

Geoff Marsh is set to go after just two tours with Sri Lanka•AFP

Sri Lanka Cricket are set to replace current coach Geoff Marsh with Graham Ford, the former South Africa coach, ESPNcricinfo has learned. The decision, which is expected to be announced after the one-day series against South Africa, is the latest by the board to revamp the set-up around the national team – the selection panel was replaced last week and it is believed the captaincy is also set to change hands.Ford earlier this week resigned as head coach of the Dolphins, the Durban-based franchise, saying he wanted to “follow my dreams of involvement at an international level”.He will be the third coach appointed by Sri Lanka since Trevor Bayliss stepped down after leading them to the 2011 World Cup final. Marsh was appointed for two years in September, 2011 and was in charge for the tours against Pakistan and South Africa. His appointment appeared to end a period of upheaval following Bayliss’ exit. Stuart Law, who was Bayliss’ assistant, took over for the England tour before quitting to coach Bangladesh. Rumesh Ratnayake then took over for the home series against Australia, before Marsh’s appointment.Ford took over as coach of South Africa from Bob Woolmer in 1999 and held the position till 2001. He moved to Kent as director of cricket in 2004, and in 2006 he returned home to take charge of the Dolphins. In June 2007, he was offered the challenge of coaching India but declined. In 2009, he withdrew his name from the shortlist of candidates for the England coaching job.Sri Lanka has come in for much criticism since reaching the World Cup final, having lost every Test and ODI series they have played since then and captain Tillakaratne Dilshan might also be replaced by Mahela Jayawardene following their poor performance in South Africa. When asked in Kimberley, on the eve of the fourth ODI, whether he would accept the job if offered, Jayawardene said, “I will have to think about it. I will need some time.”Phone calls to SLC president Upali Dharmadasa went unanswered while secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said he could not comment on the matter.Sri Lanka have lost three and won one of the five Tests they played under Marsh’s stewardship, though that win was their first ever in South Africa. They have also lost seven of the nine ODIs they have played. When he took over, Marsh had said he was keen to extend his two-year contract to help Sri Lanka win another World Cup. Instead, his term has lasted just four months.

No entanto, durante a Copa do Mundo, no dia 25 de agosto, a diretoria do clube paulista desligou o treinador do cargo.

Contramão do mercado brasileiro

Sob o comando do treinador, a Raposa marcou 240 gols e sofreu 135.

Miller stars as Jamaica beat Barbados

Nikita Miller’s third first-class ten-wicket haul carried Jamaica to a 120-run win over Barbados at Sabina Park in Jamaica

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Feb-2012

Nikita Miller’s ten-wicket haul helped Jamaica rout Barbados•West Indies Cricket

Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller’s third first-class ten-wicket haul carried Jamaica to a 120-run win over Barbados at Sabina Park in Jamaica. Barbados were bowled out for less than 200 in both their innings as Jamaica claimed 12 points to top the table.Half-centuries from Donovan Pagon and Tamar Lambert, together with a string of steady contributions from the middle and lower order, helped take Jamaica to 287 in their first innings, after they elected to bat. Tino Best picked up two wickets within the first six overs to put Jamaica on the back foot, but a third-wicket stand of 55 between Pagon and Brendon Nash (25) steadied the innings. Pagon and Lambert then put on 79 runs for the fourth wicket to further consolidate Jamaica’s position. Once Pagon and Lambert were dismissed, Barbados’ bowlers continued to strike at regular intervals to restrict Jamaica to 287.Barbados started poorly with Sheldon Cotterrell dismissing the openers cheaply. They looked in trouble at 30 for 3 but a 51-run stand between Jonathan Carter and Omar Phillips – who top-scored with 67 – stablised the innings. However, once Carter was dismissed by Miller with the score on 81, the collapse began. Miller ran through the middle and lower order with a miserly spell of 5 for 25 in 22 overs as Barbados stumbled from 81 for 3 to 157 all out.The 130-run first-innings lead proved to be invaluable for Jamaica, as their batsmen failed to get going in the second innings. Lambert hit another half-century, but seven Jamaica batsmen were unable to reach double figures, with the last four failing to get off the mark. Kemar Roach picked up five wickets, with Sulieman Benn chipping in with four as Jamaica were bowled out for 162.However, the 293-run target proved to be too much for Barbados. Carter, who top-scored with 64, together with Roach (26) and Kirk Edwards (22), were the only batsmen to offer some resistance as Miller once again ripped through the middle and lower order. Barbados were bowled out for 172 in just under 52 overs with Miller’s second five-for of the game giving him match figures of 10 for 49.”I had a clear plan going into the match. I planned for this game and executed the plan very well. The key was to be consistent … to create pressure on the Bajan batsmen,” Miller said after the victory. “Barbados always play tough cricket and I knew I had to be mentally very strong against them as well as tactically on top of my game.”I was very consistent throughout, putting the ball in the right areas. I would say, on 95 percent of the occasions I forced the batsman into error – they did not give their wickets away. I felt I built the pressure and earned my wickets. The process brought me great joy. This is the third occasion I have collected ten wickets in a match. I would rate this as the best match haul.”
