Leeds United to spend big in one area?

Leeds United are willing to spend big in one area this transfer window…

What’s the word?

That’s according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, who delivered an intriguing claim to GIVEMESPORT earlier this week.

The Yorkshire giants rarely conduct business during the winter, not at least under the current regime of manager Marcelo Bielsa and director of football  Victor Orta as there isn’t enough time for any new player to get up to speed with the Argentine’s methods.

However, this month could be very different.

“The one position where I think the Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani is willing to maybe push the boat out and spend a bit more, is for that central midfielder,” he said.

Much-needed addition

Overall this season, the Peacocks have been in pretty dire form.

Their win over Burnley earlier this month moved them eight points clear of the relegation zone but things can quickly change in this division, especially as several teams below them in the standings hold a game in hand on them.

That result, though, was followed up with a premature exit from the FA Cup last weekend, so it only goes to show that Bielsa’s men have struggled and for large parts, that has been down to injuries.

Leeds’ squad has been decimated with a long list of injury problems regularly throughout the campaign. Against Arsenal only last month, Bielsa was missing as many as 11 players, nine of which could be considered first-team regulars.

It got so bad that he had to name a 15-year-old on the bench for a Premier League clash.

One of the longer-term absentees is academy graduate turned club favourite, Kalvin Phillips. His presence at the base of midfield is sorely missed and some of their disappointing results could be attributed to his absence.

And he is not due back until February at the earliest, which is cause for concern and exactly why the addition of a new midfielder should be a priority.

The Yorkshiremen were already on the lookout for one but the England international’s injury increases that need tenfold and must force Radrizzani’s hand to spend this month.

So for O’Rourke to suggest that the Italian supremo is willing to put his hand into his pocket to do so is hugely encouraging. It should leave Bielsa absolutely buzzing that he’s going to get at least one reinforcement in a very key area.

Reading playmaker John Swift and Marseille powerhouse Boubacar Kamara are just two exciting names to have been linked with a switch to Elland Road in recent weeks.

Either of those would be solid additions.

Half-centuries from Ashen Fernando and captain Dinesh Walpita, backed by a useful lower-order effort by Chamod Pathirana, helped St Thomas’ College fight out a draw against Royal College at the Sinhalese Sports Club in the Inter Schools Annual Big Match. Royal College’s performance had been led by example from their captain Bhanuka Rajapakse, who starred in an all-round effort, and so did Walpita for St Thomas’ College.Royal College, led by opener Ramith Rambukwella’s blistering 165, which came off 148 balls and included 21 fours and five sixes, cruised to 288 for 4 on the third day and declared to set St Thomas’ College a challenging target of 258. St Thomas’ College, though, went about trying to save the game, as Walpita batted steadily, striking nine fours in his 128-ball 51. There were, however, moments of trepidation as Royal College nipped out the first three wickets for 53. Walpita, determined to battle through to a draw, added 69 in 22.3 overs with Fernando, who contributed 55.Still, Royal College never had victory out of sight and fought back through Rajapakse, who dismissed Walpita and wicketkeeper Sachin Peiris of consecutive deliveries to reduce the opposition to 123 for 5. The next two wickets, though not adding too many, did manage to bat 11 overs, and Pathirana, with Neomal Wickramasekera, played out a further 46 balls before play concluded. It was St Thomas’ College who had grabbed the advantage at the end of the first innings, gaining a lead of 31. Walpita, after putting Royal College in, took four wickets to help limit his opponents to 283 for 9. Rajapaksa, too, played a captain’s hand, scoring 68 off 60 balls. In reply, Pasan Wijewardene (99) and Nuwan Kavinda (86) were involved in a 159-run partnership to help their team get past 283 and post 314, though Rajapakse and Manisha Thanthirigoda, sharing eight wickets, had fought back. The tables turned in the second innings, but some determined batting by St Thomas’ College on the final day helped them save the game.

Leeds: Romano drops big Raphinha update

Fabrizio Romano has delivered a huge update on the future of Raphinha at Leeds United this week…

What’s the word?

The Brazilian winger has regularly been linked with moves away from Elland Road following his fine form for the Yorkshire giants over the past 18 months or so, with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals Liverpool just two of the teams mooted with interest.

For now, though, he isn’t leaving Leeds during the January transfer window but that could change in the summer.

“Everything is in place. [Kingsley] Coman is prepared to stay at Bayern and it means that, first of all, that Raphinha from Leeds to Bayern was fake news because it was never a done deal between Leeds and Bayern. The reports on Christmas Day were not true,” the Italian journalist told his ‘Here We Go’ podcast.

“And also about Raphinha, keep an eye on other English clubs for the summer – not for [the] January window but for summer – English clubs are interested in Raphinha and I’m not so sure he is going to extend his contract at Leeds.”

His final season?

This update will come as a double-edged sword for many United supporters.

On the one hand, it’s a massive, massive boost to keep hold of him for the remainder of the season, especially as they are by no means clear of a relegation dogfight.

Yes, Marcelo Bielsa’s side sit eight points above the drop zone but that could quickly change, with multiple teams possessing several games in hand due to postponements over the festive period.

Raphinha has been vital for the Argentine this season as he tops the charts for goals scored (eight), key passes (1.8 per game), dribbles (2.4 per game) and shots (3.1 per game), via WhoScored. He leads in pretty much every attacking aspect, so Leeds would be in a tricky spot without his goals and creativity.

However, Romano’s claim suggesting that the 25-year-old dynamo will not sign a new contract is hugely worrying, even more so as his failure to join Bayern this month will open up the possibility of him going to one of their top-flight rivals instead, just in the summer rather than now.

That would be a devastating double blow.

Instead, those around Elland Road will have to watch their former favourite continue to light up the English game but for another team in the league.

All in all, it’s hard to imagine that many fans will be thrilled by this news. The information surrounding his long-term future and his contract is certainly going to leave a lot of supporters angry.

– O ideal é, primeiro, entender a regra.

Canada consolidated their dominant position against Afghanistan by piling on 566, and nipping out three wickets before the close of play on the second day. Canada’s was a combined batting effort, led by Sunil Dhaniram’s 130, which included 17 fours and a six. His knock was backed up by important contributions; the last four wickets added 221 with each of the last four batsmen managing 20-plus scores. Ten batsmen in Canada’s innings reached double-digits, and the extras furthered their tally by 34 runs.Canada built on a strong performance on the first day by Ashish Bagai, who had helped steer his team to 350 for 6 and Dhaniram, together with the lower order, got them to a score greater than what they would have expected at the start of the second day.For Afghanistan, legspinner Samiullah Shenwari grabbed 4 for 118, but the bowlers were handled quite comfortably as Canada reached a virtually invincible position. In reply, Shabir Noori held one end together with an unbeaten 46 but lost three partners, including captain Nowroz Mangal, as his side finished on 110 for 3 at stumps.

Manchester United: Fans react to Jesse Lingard update

Newcastle United have made a “generous and extremely tempting” offer for Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard.

That’s according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, and a number of United fans have been giving their thoughts to the news on social media.

Lingard is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer and has made just two starts all season. He’s recently been linked with Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham, with the former of the three pushing to land the 29-year-old.

According to Edwards, Newcastle had a loan bid turned down earlier in the week but have now returned with a “generous and extremely tempting” offer.

Edwards adds that United could be able to make around £12m for Lingard, who Ole Gunnar Solskjaer labelled as ‘brilliant’, however, the England international isn’t considering a permanent move at this moment in time.

United fans react

@utdreport relayed Edwards’ claim regarding Lingard on Twitter. This is what these United supporters had to say in reply, with many keen for him to move on.

Lasith Malinga, Saurabh Tiwary star in thrilling Mumbai win

A dry slow wicket and the early fall of Sachin Tendulkar, on whom Mumbai tend to depend far too much, combined to produce a thrilling game that concluded in the last over

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out
Lasith Malinga’s four-for helped Mumbai Indians to their sixth victory in this IPL, and inflicted a sixth defeat on Kings XI Punjab•Indian Premier League

A dry slow pitch and the early fall of Sachin Tendulkar, on whom Mumbai Indians tend to depend far too much, combined to produce a thrilling game that concluded in the last over at the Brabourne Stadium. Set a target of 164 after Lasith Malinga had restricted Kings XI Punjab with a four-for, Mumbai stumbled at various points of the chase but found enough vital contributions to clinch the game with three balls to spare. Shikhar Dhawan laid the platform with a half-century, Saurabh Tiwary lifted Mumbai with a breezy 31 just when it seemed they might lose their way, and R Sathish produced the final flourish to push them past the line and take them a step closer towards a semi-final berth .Mumbai needed 19 from the final two overs but Sathish produced two skillful hits to the ropes – an inside-out shot over covers and a whip-lash square drive – off Ravi Bopara, and Saurabh Tiwary thrashed a straight boundary to leave themselves six to get of the final over. Sathish held his nerves to collect couple of driven two’s and Brett Lee fired a wide down the leg side, as Punjab slipped to their sixth defeat in the tournament. It wasn’t quite a quality game, but it made for interesting viewing. Despite a composed fifty from Dhawan, Mumbai dawdled in the chase to reach a situation where they needed 57 from 33 balls. It was at this point that the game started to turn in their favour. Tiwary slog-swept Piyush Chawla for a six and Ambati Rayudu pulled the same bowler to the wide long-on boundary to reduce the equation to 46 from 30 balls. However, Bopara, who bowled medium pace not dissimilar to Chris Harris, slipped in a few tight overs in the company of the equally impressive Shalabh Srivastava. And when Bopara picked up the vital wicket of Dwayne Bravo with a slower one and Srivastava bowled a few dot balls, the equation read 27 from 15 balls. It was a make or a break moment, and Tiwary forced Mumbai ahead with a fierce flat-batted six over long-off off Srivastava; Sathish settled the issue in the next over with his strikes against Bopara. It was a chase that ebbed and flowed right from the start. Dhawan had started it with two boundaries in Lee’s first over but Srivastava bowled a tight over to keep Tendulkar quiet. It was the first sign that things might not be so easy for Mumbai. Chawla then struck a big blow, luring Tendulkar to hole out to long-on in the sixth over to push Mumbai to 42 for 1. Dhawan and Kieron Pollard pushed Mumbai forward but Pollard holed out to long-on, and Dhawan to long-off, to leave their team struggling at 91 for 3 from 11.4 overs. But they found enough firepower from the lower middle-order to clinch their sixth win.Just as they allowed things to drift a touch in the chase, they had earlier allowed Punjab to stretch the target. Malinga had sizzled with three wickets from four balls, which included a perfect yorker to knock out Shaun Marsh, the only batsman who offered some resistance, as Mumbai restricted Punjab to 163. But you couldn’t escape the feeling that had Mumbai produced their top game, Punjab would have struggled to get past 125.Barring Marsh, Punjab’s batsmen looked woefully out of touch. With the exception of Sachin Tendulkar, who was visibly agitated with his team-mates on a few occasions, Mumbai’s men seemed to lack intensity in the first half of the game. The fielding was largely shoddy, with the irregular keeper Ambati Rayudu setting the tone, but they lifted their game after the first time-out and had enough skill with their bowling to restrict Punjab to a gettable score. If Punjab got anywhere close to a decent score, they have only Marsh to thank for. This was his first IPL game this season but he looked in good touch right from the start. He collected four boundaries in his first ten balls, with a peachy on-the-up on drive against Ryan McLaren being the highlight. Regular fall of wickets, though, forced him to slow down and drop anchor. As witnessed in the first IPL, he kept things really simple: He stayed still on the leg-stump guard, preferring to stay completely beside the line of the ball, and played his drives. There was one big hit as well, when he went down on his knee to swing a slower one from Pollard from outside off over the long-on boundary; but for the majority of his innings, he drove along the ground. He didn’t find much support from his team-mates, though. Mahela Jayawardene struggled to get the ball off the turf initially and had problems running between the wickets. A run-out seemed inevitable and that’s how he went in the end. Bopara missed a full and straight ball from Zaheer Khan and Yuvraj Singh shovelled a slower one from Bravo straight to short fine-leg. Even Irfan Pathan, who has batted really well in this tournament, failed to convert a start. To his credit though, it took a good catch from Harbhajan Singh, running to his right from midwicket, to end his stay. And when Marsh fell next ball, Punjab were tottering at 124 for 6 from 16 overs before Piyush Chawla pushed them past 160, which proved inadequate, but only just.
