AVFC linked with McNeil transfer

Now that the January transfer window has opened, this has set off a flurry of transfer rumours and reports linking numerous players with moves to a range of different clubs.

One club that have been linked with a potential transfer deal in the near future is Aston Villa, who could be set to allow manager Steven Gerrard to make some changes to his squad.

What’s the word?

According to a recent report from The Sun by journalist Alan Nixon, Villa are interested in signing Burnley winger Dwight McNeil as well as fellow Premier League clubs Everton and Crystal Palace.

Since joining Burnley’s U18 side back in 2014 from Manchester United’s youth system, the 22-year-old has gone on to make a total of 127 senior appearances for the Clarets across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing 17 assists in the process.

In terms of a potential move to Villa, either in the current January transfer window or the next summer window, the report claims that the Midlands club would have to “shift some of their squad for a bid to happen.”

Forget El Ghazi

With this in mind, it could be a good time for Villa to get rid of current winger Anwar El Ghazi, who has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks, given how he’s only made three substitute appearances for Villa since Gerrard’s first game in charge against Brighton & Hove Albion back in November.

Taking this into account, getting rid of the Dutch forward could be the first step towards signing McNeil, which would surely be very pleasing for Gerrard given how the Burnley winger has managed to rack up more shots, key passes and dribbles per game than El Ghazi has in the Premier League this season, highlighting his attacking talents.

Depending on what happens with Villa’s current attacking players this month such as El Ghazi or anyone else, there could be an opportunity for the Midlands club to secure a move for McNeil and get him into Gerrard’s squad.

However, with Burnley currently sitting in the relegation zone, it could be easier for Villa to sign McNeil in the summer if Sean Dyche’s side aren’t able to avoid the drop by the end of the campaign. Either way, Gerrard would surely be delighted to welcome him.

Seamers make it Karnataka's day

The Karnataka seamers ensured that their side took the ascendancy against Mumbai on the first day of the Ranji Trophy final in Mysore

The Chamundi Hills loom in the background of the Gangothri Glades, and the ground is surrounded by lush greenery. Add to this the lovely weather, and a near-packed house, it was an idyllic day for cricket. Mumbai’s batsmen didn’t enjoy the occasion, though, as Karnataka’s quick bowlers, spearheaded by R Vinay Kumar, lived up to the pre-match hype to leave the visitors reeling at 106 for 6. It was left to the famously resilient Mumbai lower-order to ensure the day was not a total write-off, Vinayak Samant’s half-century hauling them past 200.Despite the pre-match talk that focused on the spicy pitch, Wasim Jaffer chose to bat. Vinay had the Mumbai captain regretting the decision soon after with a stellar display of disciplined seam bowling. The fans were still trickling in, when Vinay had Sahil Kukreja nicking the third ball of the match. Twenty minutes later, he dismissed Mumbai’s heaviest run-scorers over the past few seasons, Jaffer and Ajinkya Rahane. First, Jaffer’s flick was snaffled by an alert Ganesh Satish at short leg, and three deliveries later, the ball of the day – a perfect outswinger – had Rahane groping and he could only edge to the wicketkeeper.Mumbai were 20 for 3, but had the two batsmen who salvaged their first-innings in the semi-final, Abhishek Nayar and Onkar Khanvilkar, at the crease. The bowlers got the ball to jag around, but the Mumbai pair just about survived the testing spell of nine overs that yielded only 12 runs. Nayar was on all fours and needed the physio’s assistance after being struck on the box and Khanvilkar was reprieved on 3 when Robin Uthappa couldn’t hang on to an inside-edge that popped to short cover.Only when the fourth seamer, Stuart Binny, was introduced in the 15th over, did the batting grow in assurance. Khanvilkar confidently cut a couple of short balls for four, and punched S Aravind through the covers for another boundary. When Nayar muscled a couple of boundaries through the off side to take 12 off a Vinay over, the partnership had swelled to 64 and the recovery was well on track.Uthappa turned to his impact bowler, Abhimanyu Mithun, who got the breakthrough, first ball of a new spell. Khanvilkar’s leaden-footed attempt to steer a full delivery to the leg side left his stumps splayed. Nayar was never at ease against Mithun’s pace – in the penultimate over before lunch, the batsman was late to defend but escaped, only to be done in by an inswinging yorker two balls later.Soon after lunch, there was a moment of controversy. Ajit Agakar punched a Vinay delivery back towards the bowler, who dived but couldn’t pull off a return catch. The ball was deflected towards mid-off where Sunil Joshi fielded and relayed the ball to the keeper. During this time, Agarkar – not interested in a single – had wandered out of the crease, practising his stroke. The keeper threw down the stumps, Karnataka appealed, and the third-umpire ruled the batsman out. Agarkar showed his displeasure to the square-leg umpire, Sanjay Hazare, when the decision was referred to the TV, and he continued to fume as he walked off. His antics only served to earn him a meeting with the match referee at the end of the day’s play.Samant and Ramesh Powar started the next rescue mission for Mumbai. Both were struck several times on the hands and helmets but persevered. Powar was regularly beaten by the away movement, and on one occasion, in obvious reference to Agarkar’s dismissal, he signaled to the keeper that he was stepping out of the crease to inspect the pitch.Karnataka switched their bowlers around but couldn’t budge the pair for over an hour. It was time to bring back Mithun, who once again struck gold with his first delivery. He got Powar to slash to a diving KB Pawan at gully. Catching is one aspect in which Karnataka have disappointed all season, but it was top-notch today.Iqbal Abdulla played a confident cameo, slamming five fours, including three in a row off Mithun, before he fell to another smart catch, this time a leaping effort from Amit Verma at first slip.It was then the turn of Samant and Kulkarni to frustrate the home side, and the pair punished an attack whose discipline was flagging. Sunil Joshi snapped their stand at 45 by snaring Kulkarni, and Samant’s resistance ended when Manish Pandey clung on to a low chance at backward point.Mumbai were disappointed to close at 233, but would have been lifted by their seamers’ performance in the short spell before stumps. All three bowled with good pace, and Kulkarni was rewarded with the big wicket of Uthappa. The hugely inexperienced Karnataka batting has been in top form all season, but without Rahul Dravid and against a potent attack, Tuesday could be their biggest test yet.

Report shares Ndombele exit news

According to ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is eyeing a major overhaul behind the scenes as he holds private meetings with club chiefs and makes a decision on midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.

The Lowdown: Conte ‘evaluations’ made…

The Lilywhites manager, as he candidly admitted to the press, has been making ‘evaluations’ on his Tottenham squad as he decides who stays and who goes this January and beyond.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Spurs’ head coach recently finished his assessment of the Hotspur Way squad with many players currently linked with a possible move away from north London.

The likes of Matt Doherty, Giovani Lo Celso and Dele Alli are mentioned as possible departures with yet more news emerging on who could leave Spurs.

The Latest: Conte makes Ndombele call…

According to ESPN, club record signing Ndombele is one of six players Conte is now ‘willing’ to part with as he holds ‘private meetings’ with Spurs chiefs.

Chairman Daniel Levy is ‘expected to back’ the Italian’s exit decisions but club hierarchy recognise the difficulty in facilitating these deals mid-season.

As well as Ndombele, other players at risk of being sold are indeed Alli, Doherty, Lo Celso, Steven Bergwijn and even Japhet Tanganga.

The Verdict: Right call?

Given his arguable lack of application at N17 despite his obvious ability, with Conte publicly questioning it, perhaps may be the right time to entertain offers for the Frenchman.

As ever in January, the difficulty lies in finding a suitable offer for Ndombele but given the player’s pedigree, you would believe it is a possible a big club could register interest.

Described as ‘unbelievable’ by insider John Wenham, the midfield ace completed more dribbles per 90 last campaign than any Spurs player in the Premier League (WhoScored), with former boss Jose Mourinho hailing his turnaround at one point.

Alas, his bright flashes have come at an inconsistent rate and Conte will want players who can perform at a high level more regularly in his side.

Collingwood pleased with England's dominance

Paul Collingwood declared that he was “excited” by the manner of England’s seven-wicket victory in the first Twenty20 against Pakistan in Dubai

Paul Collingwood declared that he was “excited” by the manner of England’s seven-wicket victory in the first Twenty20 against Pakistan in Dubai, a statement which might ordinarily be regarded as an over-reaction to a fairly meaningless victory in a hastily arranged two-match series.Nevertheless, with the World Twenty20 now little more than two months away, and with Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan combining in a purposeful 112-run stand for the fourth wicket following a committed team effort in the field, the skipper has plenty of reasons to be cheerful going into Saturday’s series decider. It’s far too early to claim that England have cracked the shortest format of the game, but they outplayed the reigning world champions in their own home from home. And there has to be some sort of significance to be taken from that.”It was an exciting victory because of the way we played,” said Collingwood. “The bowlers set the tone at the top of the innings with early wickets, and we didn’t let them back into the game. The fielding was exceptional, we looked really sharp and saved plenty of runs, but the bowlers were brilliant because they bowled to their plans and put [Pakistan] under pressure. We had a little bit of a blip, but magnificent innings from KP and Morgs saw us home.”If Morgan’s batting was a continuation of the cool and collected form that he has displayed since his breakthrough performances at the Champions Trophy in September, then Pietersen’s unbeaten 43 from 43 balls was quite possibly the most important innings he has produced all winter. From an uncomfortable 18 for 3, he turned down the temptation to belt his way back to the form that has eluded him since the tour of the Caribbean 12 months ago, and settled into a holding pattern that guided England to an ultimately comfortable victory.”It was an important innings, because he used his head,” said Collingwood. “We were in a sticky situation – three-down early doors – and really it was kind of an anchor role, unlike a KP innings, but a very important one. It’s great that he can use his head in that way and see the boys home. He looked very composed out there which is a great thing because he looked confident at the crease and struck the ball well. He played within his limitations, because the main thing for him was to see the boys home.”The Pietersen of old might have been tempted to hog the limelight – especially once the back of the run-chase had been broken – and seek the glory shot to seal the victory and the headlines. This time, however, he was quite content to be lapped by the imperious Morgan, whose range of strokes in the closing overs were exceptional, even against the renowned master of Twenty20 bowling, Umar Gul.”I like batting with Kev, because of the ability and the power the guy has,” said Morgan. “His destruction capabilities are endless, so I think we suit each other. One of us can sit in if the other is in form or fancies a particular bowler, so I enjoy batting with him.”It was a difficult wicket to get in on, but once we got in, we were able to force the occasion and put the pressure back on the Pakistani bowlers. And we were able to do that because of the short total we were set. It was a magnificent effort from the bowlers.”Shoaib Malik, Pakistan’s captain, agreed with that point, after Pakistan had been restricted to 25 for 2 in their Powerplay overs – their slowest start in 20-over cricket. “I think we were 20-25 runs short because England bowled really well, especially with new ball,” he said. “We didn’t start well and in the Twenty20 format, you have to utilise the first six overs.”Nevertheless, if England are tempted to get carried away by their success, then they should be warned that a familiar foe will return to the fray for Saturday’s rematch. Shahid Afridi has now served his two-match ban following his ball-biting antics at the Waca earlier this month, and his peerless power-hitting and aggressive legspin will add an extra dimension to Pakistan’s tactics.”[After] one match you can’t change everything. You should give chances to your player, some proper chances,” said Shoaib. “But Afridi is back tomorrow and that gives us confidence. He’s one of the best allrounders in the world and, automatically, him being at the ground gives us confidence. I’m sure he will play tomorrow and do well for the country, his team and for himself.”
