Journalist doubts Palace move for Martial

Crystal Palace are unlikely to make a move for out-of-favour Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

The Lowdown: Martial struggling for minutes

The Frenchman has struggled to force his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans at Old Trafford this season, making just two Premier League starts prior to the Norwegian’s departure from the club this morning.

The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and Jadon Sancho all appear to be ahead of Martial in the pecking order, so he could leave the Manchester club soon.

Palace have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old, who has scored 94 goals in his career during spells with Monaco and United.

The Latest: Barclay plays down Palace move for Martial

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Barclay played down the idea of Martial heading to Crystal Palace, admitting that the Eagles likely couldn’t afford his wages.

The journalist said: “Would he even want to go to Crystal Palace? He’s obviously out of favour at United, and they probably are looking to let him go, but I would be pretty shocked.

“He would either have to take a massive pay cut or Palace would have to go down a massively different route.”

The Verdict: Highly unlikely

Martial is a talented footballer who has had good times at United – his record of 79 goals in 266 appearances is not to be dismissed – but as Barclay says, it is hard to see a move to Palace ever materialising.

The France international earns an eye-watering £250,000 per week at Old Trafford, which is almost double that of Palace’s highest-earning player Wilfried Zaha (£130,000). Also, Martial’s current United deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2024, so Patrick Vieira couldn’t even snap up his compatriot on the cheap.

Besides, it’s not as if the Eagles have been stuck for goals this season either – Christian Benteke, Wilfried Zaha, Conor Gallagher and Odsonne Edouard have already netted 15 times between them in the Premier League alone – so Martial isn’t a player that Palace desperately need.

O duelo será novamente no Estádio Nilton Santos.

Gerrard must start Douglas Luiz v Leicester

Steven Gerrard was unable to make it three wins out of three as Aston Villa manager after losing 2-1 to Manchester City in midweek.

Their next Premier League clash sees them take on Leicester City this Sunday to try and get their winning streak back on track.

On the chalkboard

In terms of which players Gerrard could pick for his starting XI to take on the Foxes, one man who featured in the defeat against Pep Guardiola’s side and should be in the team on Sunday is midfielder Douglas Luiz, who set up Villa’s consolation goal against the Premier League champions.

Making his first start since Villa’s 3-1 defeat against Arsenal back in October, Luiz played the full 90 minutes against his former club and prove to Gerrard how valuable he can be for the team from an attacking and defensive point of view.

With 55 touches of the ball, the 23-year-old made 28 accurate passes, five key passes, two crosses and three long balls, highlighting his range of passing ability.

From a defensive point of view, Luiz – who is currently earning £52k-per-week according to Salary Sport – won five duels, blocked one shot, and made two clearances and two interceptions against the reigning champions.

The performance ultimately earned the Brazilian an overall match rating of 7.3/10, leaving just John McGinn and Ollie Watkins with higher ratings on the night for the home side according to SofaScore.

Birmingham Live also picked up on Luiz’s performance by saying that he “was solid on his return and looked fired up against his former side. Standout operator in Villa’s engine room. Looked like he had the bit between his teeth.”

Taking all this into account, it would make sense for Gerrard to stick with Luiz, who Villa journalist Gregg Evans previously claimed was “better than [Paul] Pogba” when the Brazilian played against Manchester United in July 2020, to see if he can replicate the same standard of performance against Leicester and cause them some problems as he did against Man City.

Whether or not Gerrard goes with Luiz in the team to face Leicester, he will surely this match as a great opportunity to get back to winning ways against his former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, given how the Foxes have won just one of their five previous league games.

Well-oiled New South Wales ready for all-comers

New South Wales coach Matthew Mott pleased with dominant semi-final show which gave out a “statement at how we want to go into the final”

David Warner has provided plenty of powerful starts for New South Wales•Cricket NSW

On paper New South Wales have the best side. On form they remain favourites. On Wednesday evening Simon Katich’s well-oiled unit became the first team to enter the finals after overwhelming Victoria by 79 runs. The margin of victory over their south Australian neighbours at the Feroz Shah Kotla – easily the worst pitch in the tournament – surprised even NSW.Katich had pointed out earlier that the toss would be vital on a tough track, and he helped his side by calling correctly again, as he has done all tournament. The emphatic win was set up by their opening pair, Phillip Hughes and David Warner, who bludgeoned 62 runs in little more than six overs.”We knew the wicket [in Delhi] and that suited our bowling attack but definitely that start we got with the bat was probably a little bit unscripted,” Mathew Mott, the NSW coach, said immediately after reaching Hyderabad for Friday’s final. “We were hoping to set a decent base and it really exceeded even our biggest expectations and set the game for us. It was hard for Victoria to get back into it.”Hughes and Warner have been wrestling for the top run-maker’s slot throughout the tournament, Warner (188) currently trailing his partner by 11 runs. Katich expects a similar thrust in the final from the pair, who have already stitched together three 50-plus partnerships including an incredible 121 against Trinidad & Tobago in Hyderabad.”Warner is fantastic for us,” Katich said, and even questioned Delhi Daredevils’ wisdom in not securing the opener’s services for the Champions League. “Really I can’t understand why Delhi didn’t take him – their loss was our gain,” Katich said with a smile.Mott was also pleased that his team didn’t slacken throughout the 40 overs despite being in control, which helped them make “a bit of a statement about how we want to go into the final.”Katich said he had no preference about NSW’s opponent in the final, which will be decided on Thursday evening when T&T clash with Cape Cobras. “Whoever we play we know it is a tough match,” a tired-looked Katich said, having flown to Hyderabad barely hours after the win on Wednesday night. “The only thing is we haven’t played the Cobras, so it is going to be a bit of unknown but that applies to both teams.”NSW already have an idea of T&T, after they were flattened by Kieron Pollard’s match-turning 15-ball half-century on Sunday. But Katich said he wasn’t afraid to run into the only undefeated team in the tournament again. “We were little off in the game against T&T. (But) It came at a good time and it didn’t cost us too badly and instead motivated us to make sure we went up a gear in the remaining games and that showed last night.”

Sunderland must recall loaned out duo

Sunderland’s previous League One outing saw them comfortably beat Morecambe 5-0 thanks to goals from Ross Stewart, Nathan Broadhead, Alex Pritchard and Leon Dajaku, making it the second league game of the season where they’ve managed to put five goals past their opponents with the first being their 5-0 victory over Cheltenham Town back in September.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, Sunderland have the opportunity to add even more firepower to their squad after a recent report from The Northern Echo claimed that Lee Johnson is “considering recalling Jack Diamond and Josh Hawkes from their respective loan spells in order to increase his options in the second half of the season.”

Taking into account how many injuries Sunderland have at the moment, particularly in the defensive areas, Johnson could have the mindset of overpowering their opponents in an attacking sense, in the same way they did with Morecambe, to make up for their defensive weaknesses, which could make it a smart move to have the likes of Diamond and Hawkes at his disposal again.

In 12 League Two appearances for Tranmere Rovers, Hawkes has managed to score one goal and provide two assists whilst playing in a number of different midfield and attacking positions.

For Diamond, he has racked up five goals and four assists in 17 appearances for Harrogate Town across League Two and the FA Cup.

This shows why Johnson reportedly wants the duo back at the Wearside club in January to see if they can continue their good starts to the season back at Sunderland and help the Black Cats win promotion back to the Championship.

If Johnson can guarantee Diamond and Hawkes regular playing time back at Sunderland for the remainder of the season, then Kyril Louis-Dreyfus should definitely bring them back in case his squad are struck down with any more injuries that could be a setback for their promotion hopes.

Providing the duo do return in the winter and are able to have a positive impact on the team and their results moving forward, this would be a massive boost for the fans who would undoubtedly be thrilled, especially if the team manages to secure promotion.

Apesar do resultado negativo, o lateral-esquerdo João Paulo elogiou a atuação do time durante a partida.
