Menacing Harmison kills off Australia

Harmison’s second stint was the money shot, as he filleted Australia’s tail with three breakthroughs in 13 balls but his first stint made the difference

When Great White Sharks patrol the Southern Seas, it’s not the quantities of their kills that count, but the certainties. The best and most dangerous predators can go days, even weeks, without feeding. It what happens when they finally scent blood that makes them the creatures they are.For three innings and 59 overs of the final Test at The Oval, Steve Harmison basked in the warmth of a sunny Oval outfield, superfluous to his team’s requirements, but lurking nonetheless, with a menace that is the preserve of only the biggest beasts. Up until that point he had bowled four overs in the first innings, and five at the start of the second – his impact deadened on a wicket as helpful to him as a sun-lounger to a barracuda. But then, on the fourth afternoon, with Michael Hussey and Ricky Ponting beginning to work through their repertoire and – in Andrew Strauss’s admission – despair beginning to encroach on England’s thoughts, Harmison’s gills twitched and he was ordered in for the kill. His final-day contribution was devastating, sudden, and panic-inducing, as in two spells of five and six overs, he transformed the dynamics of the contest.Harmison’s second stint was the money shot, as he filleted Australia’s tail with three breakthroughs in 13 balls to take his summer’s first-class tally to 58 wickets at 20.58. But his first stint made the difference, as Hussey – his anxiety palpable as his Test career hung in the balance – immediately abandoned his calm accumulation in favour of panic.Sensing the hunter was about to turn hunted, Hussey carved madly at Harmison’s second ball before being hit on the bicep by the sixth, and the spell was only three overs old when he clipped the fatal single that caused his captain to be run out by Andrew Flintoff at mid-on. “I wasn’t expecting too many ultra-quick singles to be taken at that stage of the game,” said Ponting, through gritted teeth. But such is the impact that Harmison can effect. And that is especially true against Australia, for his reputation in Ashes cricket is as curious as they come. It will of course forever be recalled for two grotesquely contrasting performances – his first-day rampage at Lord’s in 2005, when he clanged Justin Langer’s elbow and drew blood on Ricky Ponting’s cheek, and his freeze on the first morning at Brisbane 18 months later, when Andrew Flintoff fielded his opening delivery of the series at second slip. But regardless of the accusations, most of them justified, of his apparent mental fragility, there’s scarcely an Australian who is willing to risk a bad word about him. The cricketers who have faced him recall and respect the hold he took of the key moments in 2005, and are able to accept – more readily than any Englishman – that in some environments he simply comes across as a (big) fish out of water. With that in mind, his contribution to this decisive final day mirrored the role he had played for England all summer – best described by Vic Marks in The Observer as England’s nuclear deterrent. From the moment he roughed up Phillip Hughes in Australia’s pre-series tussle against the Lions in Worcester, there had been a puzzling reluctance to unleash such mayhem on the enemy, and yet a great delight in parading him, Soviet style, from city to city in a show of the nation’s strength. It was a role that Harmison accepted with relish, for he knows full well the unease he can cause. “They don’t seem to be the confident Australia I’ve known,” he announced during that Worcester performance. “There are things you pick up on like body language. I’ve seen a little chink there. It is understandable because there are not the players in their side from bygone years.”It turns out that he had a point. Harmison has now played Tests in four separate Ashes campaigns – the same as Brett Lee and second only to Ponting among squad members on either side. Like Andrew Flintoff, his ultimate career figures will prove to be less than the sum of his potential; unlike Flintoff, it is hard to claim that he ever gave it his all.But that’s the thing with predators. They turn up when they chose, and generally when they know it is safe to do so. For all his innumerable flaws, Harmison has laid his hands on a brace of Ashes-winners medals, while securing a notch in fast-bowling folklore. It all adds up to the impression that he timed his feeding frenzies well.

Postecoglou drops behind the scenes update

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped a behind the scenes update regarding his plans at Parkhead.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by 67hailhail, the 56-year-old Bhoys boss revealed that, rather than simply investing in his playing squad come the January transfer window, he is also hoping to improve the club’s scouting and recruitment process, as well as bringing a number of new faces in behind the scenes in order to better identify potential transfer targets.

Speaking about the club’s January plans, Postecoglou said: “There’s no doubt going into January we still have some work to do with the playing roster, particular in terms of depth in certain areas.

“In terms of the structure around here, we still need some work around our recruiting and our scouting department. That will be the next focus for me to make sure we get the right people in that area.

“That’s probably the one area where football is changing rapidly – the information that is out there and how you get that information and how you use that information, particularly around scouting. That’s the next step for me in terms of January.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how poor Celtic’s recruitment has been in recent years, the news that Postecoglou is looking to heavily invest in improving the club’s scouting and recruitment processes is sure to leave Bhoys fans buzzing.

Indeed, since the summer of 2019 alone, Celtic have spent £3.01m on Boli Bolingoli, £4.5m on Vasilios Barkas, £4.95m on Albian Ajeti and paid Brighton & Hove Albion £1.98m to loan Shane Duffy, deals which set the club back a whopping £14.44m – before even taking into account the wages of each player.

And, considering the fact that it has been reported that Postecoglou will look to move all three of these permanent signings on in January, no doubt for a substantial loss, it is clear that Celtic’s current approach to recruitment simply is not working.

As such, the news that the 56-year-old is hoping to restructure the way Celtic approach the transfer market is undeniably good news for everyone involved with the club, as not only will it help the Bhoys to sign players who fit into the Greek-Australian manager’s philosophies, it will also save the Hoops a considerable amount of money in wasted transfer fees in the long run.

Ant Botha claimed five of Sussex’s seven remaining wickets, as Warwickshire preserved their first-division status in emphatic fashion on the final morning at Hove. Needing another 61 runs to make Warwickshire bat again, Sussex were instead bowled out for 172 in their second innings in 21 overs of the morning session. Botha, the left-arm spinner, trapped James Kirtley and Carl Hopkinson lbw in consecutive overs, and sent Ed Joyce back the same way after Dwayne Smith had been caught behind off Boyd Rankin. At 150 for 8, the only question remaining was whether Sussex could avoid the innings defeat, but Botha ensured that they fell two runs short.Mal Loye and VVS Laxman batted from start to finish on the final day at Taunton, as Lancashire secured the most comfortable draw imaginable against Somerset. The pair had resumed on 87 for 2 overnight, with some work still to do to guard against an innings defeat, but they took their stand to a whopping 247 before the captains agreed to an early finish. Loye finished unbeaten on 151 and Laxman 113.Durham secured their second County Championship title in style, as Nottinghamshire were condemned to an innings-and-52-run defeat at Chester-le-Street. Nottingham Forest fans slam Bong vs WBA

Many Nottingham Forest fans have been slamming the performance of Gaetan Bong in their 0-0 draw at West Brom in the Championship on Friday night.

It was a spirited performance from the visitors to come away from The Hawthorns with a point, although they would have perhaps thought that they should have had all three when Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby was sent off in the 70th minute after getting his second yellow card of the night.

Nonetheless, while there were some impressive performances in a Forest shirt, Bong flattered to deceive, losing out on four of his duels and failing to record a single dribble, blocked shot, interception, key pass or accurate cross from the left wing-back position (SofaScore).

The former Brighton defender was also guilty of losing the ball 22 times in total, the second-most out of any of his teammates on the pitch (SofaScore).

RUEDA ELOGIOU O COMANDADO

South Africa our benchmark – Hopes

It’s a sign of the times when Australia are looking at other teams as the benchmark for success

Andrew McGlashan at Lord's05-Sep-2009

James Hopes: “If we’d started off with a loss it could have been here we go again.”•Associated Press

It’s a sign of the times when Australia are looking at other teams as the benchmark for success. Having lost their No. 1 ranking in both Tests and ODIs they are now aspiring to reach the levels of South Africa, the team which has usurped them at the top, as they build for a new generation. The challenge hit home for this current Australia side when they were beaten home and away in the one-day series against South Africa earlier this year. Across ten ODIs in two countries they lost 7-3, with the 4-1 hammering in Australia an especially crushing result considering the home advantage.”I think the turning point for us was when we saw South Africa as being the benchmark and they did us over pretty good in two series,” said allrounder James Hopes. “We were a bit off the pace, then we went to Dubai to play Pakistan and we fought out some really tough wins against a very good team. I think that was our turning point and we have carried that on over here.”Australia held on for a four-run win in the opening match against England and Hopes said it was vital that game didn’t slip away as the team aims to turnaround their fortunes following the Ashes defeat. “It stops the spiral. If we’d started off with a loss it could have been here we go again. But we’ve kick-started the one-day series and now tomorrow becomes very important.”We thought we were in control, but always at the back of our minds was what happened against South Africa. A couple of times when we thought we were in a pretty good position, they’d take the batting Powerplay and overcome us at the end. We are pleased to come out with a win, it doesn’t matter by how much, four runs is enough and we are full of confidence.”This is the start of a packed period of one-day cricket with the Champions Trophy to follow the current series before Australia head to India for a seven-match ODI series. Michael Clarke is currently leading the team while Ricky Ponting takes a break and there are a number of new and recalled faces as Australia build towards the 2011 World Cup.Hopes, though, has been a regular part of the one-day set-up in recent years in a variety of roles. His performance at The Oval was typically understated but useful. He clubbed 18 off 11 balls and then bowled five tight overs for 14, including Australia’s only maiden. It took him a while to settle in the side, but is now more than happy to be Australia’s man for all occasions although never takes anything for granted when it comes to selection.”I don’t think you ever feel that you are established in this side, there are so many good players on the sidelines that you don’t want to think you are in the side permanently,” he said. “I’m feeling a bit more comfortable in my role, which is sometimes a bit hard to figure out. Sometimes I open, I’ve batted three and I’ve batted as low as nine. I’ve bowled in the first 10 overs or not until the 35th.”I’m getting more comfortable with that ‘Mr Fix It’ role we need and if I can keep doing that for another two years until the 2011 World Cup I’ll be happy.”
