Gustavo Henrique rompeu o ligamento cruzado anterior do joelho esquerdo no fim do ano passado, durante partida contra o Sport.

Moyes must make big Diop call vs Spurs

West Ham United will be looking to break into the top-six in the Premier League when they welcome local rivals Tottenham Hotspur to the London Stadium this afternoon.

David Moyes’ side extended their 100% record in the Europa League on Thursday night after defeating Belgian outfit Genk 3-0, so they will head into kickoff buoyed by confidence.

And one of the standout performers from that encounter ought to feature today in Issa Diop.

The 24-year-old centre-back has slipped down the pecking order even more since the arrival of fellow countryman Kurt Zouma in the summer transfer window but he has been given opportunities outside of the Premier League and has pretty much impressed each time.

Diop’s four appearances across the Europa League and Carabao Cup have returned four clean sheets. By comparison, the Hammers have kept just two in their eight league outings so far this campaign.

Therefore, it could be wise to unleash the Frenchman with the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son heading to east London.

As per WhoScored, the £13.5m-rated colossus has been their fourth-best player in Europe, where he is averaging two tackles (second-most) and 2.6 aerials won (third-most) per game.

Neither of Moyes’ first-choice league pairing of Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna are managing more than 0.9 tackles per outing. That will need to improve if they are to stop Kane and Spurs’ top-scorer, Son.

This is why Diop must be considered, perhaps taking the place of the latter, as he and the Champions League winner looked excellent together against Dinamo Zagreb.

Jose Mourinho once dubbed the £22m signing a “monster” in September 2018 for dominating Paul Pogba and co, but performances of that calibre have been far and few between ever since then.

However, that looks to be changing.

“I thought Diop was absolutely magnificent,” claimed Irons assistant manager Stuart Pearce, via The Athletic, after their 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

“The longer the game went on the more of a colossus he looked at the back and he’s still in relative terms, a very young man for a central defender so we’re absolutely delighted to have Issa at this club.”

Son has bagged four goals already this campaign, also averaging 2.9 shots and 1.4 dribbles per game, whilst Kane is threatening to add to his solitary strike with an average of 2.4 shots per match, via WhoScored.

Evidently, Moyes needs a rock at the back to put a stop to the pair running riot at the London Stadium, which is why Diop should be selected this afternoon.

AND in other news, Moyes must axe “special” £18m West Ham passenger v Spurs, he’s been abysmal for months…

Expert concerned by Vladimir Coufal injury

West Ham right-back Vladimir Coufal could face an extended spell on the sidelines through injury, according to expert Ben Dinnery.

The Lowdown: Coufal out injured

The Hammers are enjoying a superb start to the season, not only shining in the Premier League but also catching the eye in the Europa League and reaching the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

One negative at the moment is that Coufal has been struggling with a groin injury, even though he featured in Wednesday’s cup win over Manchester City.

The Czech Republic international has been an influential figure for David Moyes’ side, making 45 appearances to date and registering eight assists in that time – he averages the third-most tackles and third-most crosses of any Irons player this term, showing his effectiveness on both sides of the ball.

The Latest: Expert provides worrying update

Speaking to Football Insider, Dinnery admits Coufal’s injury recovery may not be going well after Moyes admitted the defender was having injections to ease the pain:

“This may be a little more complex than we thought.

“It may be that things aren’t progressing as well as they hoped after he picked up the injury in the League Cup against Man United a while back.

“The injury was being managed conservatively. We saw that he wasn’t training a lot and was then rolled out for matchday. The injection is used when a player is in a lot of pain. It will limit the pain and reduce the inflammation around that area.

“We expected to see him back in and around the squad in game week eight or nine but that hasn’t come to fruition. It could be that he isn’t responding and that might mean they need to make a decision with regards to treatment.

“But West Ham are winning games, so is there a need to rush? They have the luxury to be able to continue in his absence.”

The Verdict: Big blow if Dinnery is right…

Coufal has been such a steady, reliable performer for West Ham that it is vital he doesn’t face a prolonged spell on the sidelines this season.

The 29-year-old is a model of consistency in his defensive work, averaging 2.1 tackles and clearance apiece per game in the league this season.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher is a massive fan of the defender, admitting he ‘loves’ the Czech Republic international and placing him in his team of the season for 2020/21, which shows the sort of level the defender has been at since arriving in London.

The hope is that Coufal is managed sensibly and ends up proving his fitness, not missing too much action in the process.

In other news, some West Ham fans have gone wild over an official club announcement. Read more here.

Sri Lanka maintain winning ways

Sri Lanka survived a threatening 66-run partnership between Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq to ease to a 19-run win

Sri Lanka survived a shocking mid-innings slump and a threatening 66-run partnership between Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq to ease to a 19-run win in their first game of the Super Eights at Lord’s. Chasing a modest 151 – after Sri Lanka were shackled by some superb bowling from the spinners – Pakistan’s fight was led by their captain, who made a well-paced 50, but three wickets in eight balls, including those of Younis and Shahid Afridi, sunk the chase.Sri Lanka haven’t had much success against Pakistan in important limited-overs games, but here they held their nerve well when it mattered most. The momentum was clearly with Pakistan when the teams trooped off at the break – they had only conceded 70 in the last 12 after leaking 80 in the first eight – but the Sri Lankans shrugged off that lethargy when they returned, bowling with accuracy and venom, and fielding with a vigour that justified their rating as the best fielding team in the subcontinent.Angelo Mathews did the early damage, and after five overs Pakistan had only scored 33 compared to Sri Lanka’s 59. Pakistan, though, have made a habit of starting slowly and then scoring an insane amount of runs towards the end, and it seemed Younis and Misbah were well on their way to another rearguard rescue mission with their cool and unruffled approach. They began slowly, but Younis, especially, ran the singles cleverly, before upping the pace with some powerful sweeps off Murali.Fifty-two were needed off the last five, when the screws fell off. Misbah pulled straight to deep midwicket, Afridi, quite recklessly, slogged his first ball to same area. When Younis fell to one of several superb slower deliveries from Lasith Malinga, the chase, which had looked so promising minutes earlier, was suddenly over. The end of the match was disappointing for Pakistan, for they had recovered in style from a shocking start in the field.Sri Lanka’s total owed plenty to their two openers, and the manner in which they started suggested they’d post a score of around 200. Dilshan and Jayasuriya, aided by Tanvir’s extreme generosity, powered the team to 59 in five overs. Pakistan’s start was sloppy even by their modest standards. Tanvir started with a no-ball, and by the time his first over was done, he’d added three wides and another no-ball to that tally. The batsmen, meanwhile, made merry: both openers eased drives through the covers as the first over leaked 18.Prime Numbers11 Number of deliveries in Sohail Tanvir’s first over32 Number of dot balls bowled by Shahid Afridi, the second best in the tournament. Dale Steyn with 33 dot-balls leads the list6 Number of dot balls Younis Khan played in his 37-ball 50. He took 20 singles, seven twos and hit four fours29 Number of fours hit by Tillakaratne Dilshan in the tournament, almost twice that of the next in the list, Jacques Kallis, who has 1520 Number of extras conceded by Pakistan in the Sri Lankan innings, the second-highest in the tournament after Sri Lanka’s 22 against West IndiesThat was the launching pad for more heroics, as Dilshan uncorked his favourite scoop over the wicketkeeper, and Jayasuriya played his trademark shot as well – the short-arm pull for six. Younis didn’t trust his spinners in the Powerplays, and Sri Lanka’s openers relished pace on the ball, driving into the gaps forcefully or scooping and nudging delicately. On a quick outfield, both were equally profitable.Afridi then led the rescue mission, denying the batsmen room, and varying his pace and length cleverly to suddenly stifle the innings. In his second over, he shackled the batsmen to just one run in his first five balls, and then forced a miscue from Jayasuriya; in his next over, Dilshan was beaten by the length, and the innings fell away completely.Sri Lanka’s problems with the lower order then resurfaced, as Sangakkara and Jayawardene fell after getting starts, and the rest struggled. Pakistan, meanwhile, had tightened considerably: Umar Gul offering no freebies, Saeed Ajmal and Shoaib Malik showing excellent control, and with the fielding getting sprightly up as well, Sri Lanka had no weak link to attack. The last five overs yielded only two fours, and it seemed Sri Lanka had lost the plot after a magnificent start. In the end, though, the lack of runs in the final overs only kept Pakistan in the hunt a little longer, and reduced Sri Lanka’s margin of victory.
