Jan Kaplický, the Czech architect who designed the futuristic media centre at Lord’s, has died aged 71.What started out as a hugely controversial project at the most venerated cricket ground in the world has long since been accepted as a stunning addition to the venue’s varied architectural styles.Kaplický’s eclectic style also realised the iceberg-shaped Selfridges department store in Birmingham, as well as a host of unbuilt ideas including, according to his obituary in the Guardian, a phallic pink skyscraper, twice as high as New York’s World Trade Centre.Few could have imagined that the traditionally-minded MCC could have got involved with such a radical thinker, but nevertheless, they commissioned his company, Future Systems, to design and build the spaceship-shaped media centre in time for the 1999 World Cup.Constructed in two shipyards and costing £5.8 million, the world’s first all-aluminium, semi-monocoque building almost bankrupted Kaplický and his partner, Amanda Levete. But in 1999, the project deservedly won the prestigious Stirling Architecture prize, as well as a host of plaudits from a newly convinced press.

Leeds United will sell star player Kalvin Phillips if an offer in the region of £90m arrives, according to former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie.

The 25-year-old has matured into a fantastic footballer in recent years, becoming a key figure for both the Whites and England – Three Lions legend Alan Shearer called him ‘magnificent’ during the summer.

Phillips’ form has unsurprisingly seen him linked with a move away from Leeds, with Manchester United among those thought to be keen on acquiring his signature.

There are reports he could yet sign a new deal at Elland Road, however, and it remains to be seen where his future lies.

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie, 61, claimed that Leeds would accept an offer of £90million for Phillips, should such a big offer arrive:

“If that offer comes in, he’s gone.

“I don’t think there will be any problem with that. Is he worth it?  I don’t know. In today’s game, my mind is blown. I look at some of the players who played when I did.

“What would Gazza be worth? Or Lineker? Oh my god, they must be worth millions and millions.

“If people say he’s worth £90million, he’s worth £90million. Who am I to argue?”

The Verdict: Accept a monumental fee

While Phillips is undoubtedly an almost irreplaceable figure at Leeds, there comes a point where it is better to allow him to move on, should a ridiculous amount of money be offered.

It may be that the England international feels a fresh challenge is required at some point – playing for a Champions League team could appeal – and the Whites could use the money to make the team even stronger.

Ideally, Phillips will see out his career at Leeds, but it would arguably be a surprise if that happened given the immense quality he has shown at the highest level, and if the Whites bank a massive profit it could be a win win for both player and club.

The PCB has said it will obey the Sind High Court order to temporarily lift the domestic ban on Pakistan’s ICL-contracted players. This effectively allows the 11 affected players to take part in the next round of Quaid-e-Azam trophy matches.The court had temporarily lifted the ban at the first hearing on February 2 but players had not been able to participate in the latest round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy because the order had not been passed on to the various departmental teams involved. The PCB had also not responded to the original verdict, choosing to wait till Wednesday’s second hearing.The hearing was adjourned till February 25 since the judge was unable to attend but Shaan Gul, the PCB’s lawyer, said the 11 players who originally moved the court could play now.”We bow before the order of the court,” Gul told Cricinfo. “The case has been adjourned till February 25th but the players can absolutely take part in domestic cricket as of now.”The bans were imposed under the previous administration and though the players continue to miss out on international cricket, the current board has adopted a more flexible approach. “The present board does not support the manner in which the ban was imposed by the previous administration,” Gul said.The 11 allowed to play domestic gamesMohammad Sami, Abdul Razzaq, Hasan Raza, Shabbir Ahmed, Mohammad Yousuf, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Tahir Mughal, Shahid Yousuf, Khalid Mahmood, Naved Latif and Shahid Nazir.Pakistan has suffered immensely from the policy to exclude ICL players from international cricket. Mohammad Yousuf, who joined the ICL last season, is the biggest loss but the absence of several first-team choices and reserves has depleted resources. Officials have privately spoken of looking at ways to tackle the problem and Javed Miandad even spoke publicly of the pressure to bring back players when he was director-general last year.Ijaz Butt, the board’s chairman, has said a solution remains out of the PCB’s hands. “That is between the ICC and the BCCI and negotiations are still happening. A decision has to come from there,” Butt told reporters in Lahore. “As far as domestic cricket is concerned, the ICC said wherever it is challenged legally they can let them play. If Mohammad Yousuf leaves the ICL, we will take him back tomorrow, but we can’t right now.”Butt also warned of a new, tougher policy on players in unrecognised leagues that the ICC will adopt soon. “The new regulations in place from June 1 are much tougher. Now the ICC can also punish countries directly with fines and sanctions if they let unauthorised players appear.””Banning a player from playing in domestic cricket because he participated in the ICL is not a matter for the ICC,” said an ICC spokesperson. “Instead, only a member board can take such action. The ICC executive board therefore resolved in 2008 that member boards should take such action against ICL players as they considered appropriate, in light of and in accordance with the requirements of their own local laws”.

The Blues were dismissed for 218 late on the third afternoon and were unable to make the hosts bat again after they gained a lead of 220 on first innings.With Shane Harwood and Dirk Nannes injured, things were looking bright for New South Wales and the openers Phil Jaques and Greg Mail put on 81, but there was trouble after Mail edged John Hastings behind on 41. Aston Villa are interested in signing Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah in the January transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports over the course of the summer suggested that Dean Smith’s side were very much interested in Nketiah’s teammate Emile Smith Rowe, with Villa even putting in a couple of bids for the young playmaker.

While a deal failed to materialise for Smith Rowe, it appears that Villa are going back to the Emirates Stadium for another talented English starlet, with journalist Ekrem Konur claiming that the Midlands club are among the clubs who are keen on landing Nketiah.

He claimed that Villa and fellow Premier League clubs Brentford and Leeds United are in the queue to sign the forward, with the 22-year-old keen to leave Arsenal to get first-team football.

Could complete Dean Smith’s attack

Having signed Danny Ings from Southampton in the summer transfer window, Villa bolstered Smith’s attacking options with one of the Premier League’s most proven strikers – the England international has bagged 57 goals in 146 games in the division.

However, having let Wesley go out on loan to get some football under his belt, and with Keinan Davis ruled out through injury, it’s Villa starlet Cameron Archer who has played the role Smith’s backup striker.

While Archer has done superbly well thus far, it’s an almighty ask of a teenager to play at this level on a consistent basis if Watkins or Ings were to get injured – especially with Villa’s new two-striker setup.

In Nketiah, Villa would be getting someone who is also young, but with plenty more first-team experience, and the kind of poaching instincts off the bench from which they could benefit greatly.

Noel Whelan has previously raved about Nketiah and his style of play, saying: “He reminds me of another Jermaine Defoe and look at how well he did at West Ham. He’s very much that similar sort of player. He plays off the shoulder, very dangerous in the box. He’s a player you can’t take your eyes off because his movement’s so good.”

Adding Nketiah to the mix along with Watkins, Ings and Archer would surely complete a dream attack for Smith.
