Dragons Fire too much for Phoenix

Glamorgan Dragons’ fire proved too much for Yorkshire Phoenix at Cardiff in their Norwich Union League Division One encounter

George Dobell11-Aug-2002Glamorgan Dragons’ fire proved too much for Yorkshire Phoenix at Cardiff in their Norwich Union League Division One encounter. Both teams were level on 26 points at the start of play and retained legitimate hopes of winning the trophy. But it is the Dragons – who still have a game in hand over many of their competitors – that now find themselves only two points away from the top of the table, while Phoenix are left as outsiders in what is proving to be a frustrating season for them.It was the spin bowling of Robert Croft (3-27) and Dean Cosker (4-17) that turned the game in favour of the home team after Phoenix had looked to be cruising to victory in a rain-affected contest.Set 175 runs in win (by the Duckworth/Lewis method), Phoenix were well set at 86-1 in just the 10th over when Croft started their slide with the wicket of Matt Wood. Chris Silverwood followed just eight runs later, for an excellent 55 in 39 balls as pinch-hitter, while Richard Dawson and Anthony McGrath both followed before the 100 was posted.Michael Lumb and Gary Fellows regrouped for a while, but the introduction of Dean Cosker’s left-arm spin into the attack hastened the end and Phoenix fell away to be dismissed for 153, 21 runs short of their target.Earlier the Dragons made a decent start after electing to bat. Robert Croft began a good all-round performance with a brisk 37 (in 45 balls with seven fours), putting on 84 for the first wicket with Ian Thomas (40).But after Ryan Sidebottom claimed Croft’s wicket, more rain caused more delays and the game was further reduced to 22 over a side.Upon the resumption four wickets fell for 12 runs. Again it was spin that caused the problems, Andy Gray striking in his first over, having Ian Thomas – who had looked so good before the rain came – stumped. Fellow off-spinner Richard Dawson then took two in two balls, bowling Michael Powell for 12 before having Dragons’ skipper Steve James lbw first ball. Gray – who finished with 3-23 – then dismissed the dangerous Maynard before Darren Thomas provided some acceleration with three quick boundaries in a nine-ball cameo of 19.But Gray struck once again, dismissing Thomas before Adrian Dale and Mark Wallace took the total to 149 from their 22 overs.Duckworth/Lewis saw the target rise to 175, but despite the continued form of Silverwood as pinch-hitter this season, Croft and Cosker’s spin proved too much and the run chase ended in failure.

Eles têm dois shows.

The perfect reward for a glorious team effort

So the Indians finally got their act together and how

Partab Ramchand27-Aug-2002So the Indians finally got their act together and how! As thecliché goes, the only thing predictable about the Indian team istheir unpredictability. Down in the dumps one match, they areable to lift their game to unbelievable heights the next, only tofail utterly again when hopes are justifiably high. If anything, the tour of England alone has symbolised the yo-yo displaygenerally put up by the Indians. After a glorious performance in the NatWest one-day series, culminating in a now famous triumph over England in the final, they went down quite unexpectedly in the first Test at Lord’s.They received more than their share of brickbats, with both thehighly-rated batting and the innocuous bowling coming in forcriticism. And just when things looked bleak and the team wasrated as no hopers when it came to even leveling the series, theycame up with a showing that could not fail to win the hearts ofeven the most hard-bitten cynic. It was not just the margin of victory – the biggest registered byany Indian team abroad – that was satisfying. It was not just therarity of the event – it was only the fourth victory overall in44 Test matches in England – that earned the visitors plauditsaplenty. Rarely has an Indian team gelled together in alldepartments with the consistency that they displayed atHeadingley. Rarely too has an Indian team in 70 years dominated amatch from first to last in such telling fashion.Of the 13 sessions in the match, they dominated every session butone and that’s not something that can be said with any regularityabout an Indian team. And the fact that they did so abroad wasthe icing on the cake. The bowling had always been the problem. On the evidence of thefirst two Tests, it did lack the firepower to bowl out Englandtwice. But as I mentioned in my preview, with a big total in thekitty, even a toothless attack can suddenly develop fangs. I hadalso said that if India batted first and ran up a huge total, they could put England under pressure.
© ReutersThis was exactly what happened. There was never any doubt aboutthe strength of the Indian batting. It had only to bloom fullyand at Headingley, the long awaited event finally took place. Thebig three of the Indian batting finally came good together. Andwhen that happened the sun was bound to shine on Indian cricket -even in generally cloudy Leeds. The approach of the batsmen was commendable. As long asconditions favoured the seam bowlers, as they did for much of thefirst day, Sanjay Bangar and Rahul Dravid held on courageously.Their second wicket partnership helped set up things for thepyrotechnics of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly on thefollowing day.The big three put the ordinary England bowling in its place.Let’s face it. The home team’s bowling is as innocuous as theIndians. It was some rank bad batting and faulty planning by thevisitors that helped improve their averages in the first twoTests.A total of 600-plus is always a handy one. It gives the sideadded confidence and puts intense pressure on the opponents.Ganguly’s aggressive tactics tied the England batsmen in knotsand by the end of the third day, India were well on the road tovictory. England’s fightback thereafter was bound to be futilegiven the fact that both time and runs were against them, thanksto the big Indian lead and the nifty rate of scoring by Tendulkarand Ganguly on the second day.I had mentioned in my preview that the time had come for theIndians to go in with two spinners, pointing out that in Englandin late August there was a strong case to opt for a spin-orientedattack, even at Headingley where conditions are known to favourseamers. Despite the gallant work done by seam bowlers of late -they have even won matches for India abroad – one should neverput India’s traditional strength on the back burner.
© CricInfoWith two seamers and two spinners playing the Test, the Indianattack certainly wore a more balanced look. For all the admirableefforts of Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar, it must be said thatAnil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh caused the Englishmen mostproblems. Almost every batsman found it more difficult to dealwith the spinning ball than the seaming ball and one can alreadysee the spin duo rubbing their hands in glee at the prospect ofbowling in tandem at the Oval where they should find theconditions more amiable. Now that everything has clicked and the Indian team is lookinggood, what can we expect in the final Test commencing next week, with both teams having everything to play for? Given the up anddown manner in which events have unfolded during the series, itwould take a bold prophet to make a prediction. The Oval was thescene of one of Indian cricket’s finest hours in 1971. Andconditions favour spin more at Surrey’s home ground than anywhereelse in England. Against that is the Indian record of not havingwon a series outside the sub continent since 1986.There is also this irritating habit of losing a Test immediatelyafter winning one. It has happened on the last three occasions inZimbabwe, Sri Lanka and West Indies – so very much in keepingwith the Indians’ inconsistency. I don’t think I would want tostick my neck out and predict what’s going to happen at the Oval.In the meantime, let us savour a notable victory, which I am surewould be in anyone’s list of half a dozen greatest triumphs inIndian cricket and will always remain the perfect tribute to aconcerted team effort.

Fulham consider Anthony Knockaert sale

Fulham would be open to the idea of sanctioning Anthony Knockaert’s departure from Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that, following the recent arrival of Harry Wilson, Marco Silva’s side are now willing to listen to offers for the 29-year-old winger.

The report goes on to state that Tony Khan and the Cottagers transfer team will be contacting potential suitors for the forward over what remains of the summer transfer window, although it is thought that the former France U21 international’s wages could be a stumbling block to his departure.

Stealing a living

While Knockaert is undoubtedly a player who has the capability to be a match-winner in any given fixture, the fact that Scott Parker felt it would not harm Fulham by sending the winger out on loan last season, as well the club having just landed the rather impressive signing of Wilson, would very much appear to indicate the Frenchman’s time in west London could well be up.

Indeed, although his spell at Nottingham Forest last term was not particularly disastrous, the 29-year-old’s performances were also far from breathtaking.

Over his 34 Championship appearances for Chris Hughton’s side, the £2.7m-rated man scored just two goals, registered one assist and missed four big chances, as well as hitting the target an average of just 0.3 times per game.

However, rather bizarrely, these returns saw the man Hughton once dubbed a “fabulous” player earn a decent seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.93, ranking him as Forest’s joint sixth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

But, with Nottingham Forest having struggled at the wrong end of the Championship table last season, while Fulham will undoubtedly be hoping to secure an immediate return to the Premier League in their upcoming campaign, it would indeed appear as if Knockaert is no longer at the level Marco Silva requires.

Furthermore, with the 29-year-old reported to be taking home a whopping £35k-per-week at Craven Cottage, considering just how far the winger has slipped down the Fulham pecking order, this salary would not appear to reflect the Frenchman’s current status within the club.

As such, Khan must do all he possibly can to try and secure Knockaert a move away from Fulham this summer, as, if the forward does not feature in Silva’s first-team plans next season, spending £140k a month on the 29-year-old would be a significant waste of money.

Journalist reveals Everton are close to breaking FFP regulations

Matt Woosnam has revealed Everton are targeting squad players rather than first-team regulars to ensure they do not break Financial Fair Play guidelines.

Andros Townsend became Rafa Benitez’s first signing since taking over as the Toffees’ boss as the winger joined following the expiry of his Crystal Palace contract earlier this week.

The former Newcastle United man’s arrival was quickly followed by Asmir Begovic making the switch from Championship side Bournemouth, with the goalkeeper providing competition for England international Jordan Pickford by penning an initial one-year deal.

Ex-Leicester City winger Demarai Gray has also sealed his return to England, following a six-month spell with Bayer Leverkusen, by completing a £1.7million transfer to Goodison Park.

The Toffees have freed up some funds by not offering Joshua King, Theo Walcott, Muhamed Besic and Yannick Bolasie contract renewals.

Woosnam, of The Athletic, believes Everton are having to be shrewd in the transfer market to make sure they do not break regulations.

He exclusively told Football FanCast: “When you look at the signings they’re making, they’re very much squad players because they’re probably quite close to the brink of Financial Fair Play and the wage cap.

“Because of that, they’re looking at players who can still contribute at that level but you wouldn’t necessarily want to play them every week and they probably haven’t got the legs or ability to play every week in the Premier League anymore.”
