Newcastle arbitration prediction made

Noel Whelan has made a prediction on when Newcastle United will get a result in their upcoming arbitration case over the failed takeover.

The Lowdown: Newcastle statement

Earlier this week, the Tyneside club released a statement on their official website asking for the forthcoming arbitration process to be made public.

However, this is only possible if the Premier League also agrees to it, as otherwise the process will remain entirely confidential.

In what can be described as bullish words, Newcastle also claimed that they have ‘nothing to hide’ with regards to the process, and even suggested that the Premier League should have ‘no reason to be afraid of the public spotlight’, providing that they have acted ‘lawfully and properly’.

The Latest: Whelan predicts

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan – who is now a pundit after playing as a striker for the likes of Leeds United and Coventry City – does not think that the Premier League would have enjoyed reading the statement, and predicts that the results of the arbitration case will not be disclosed before the start of the new 2021/22 season. He said:

“It’s put the cat among the pigeons, put it that way. I’m sure the Premier League will not be enjoying Newcastle doing this.

“I’m not expecting the Premier League to go: Yes, yes, we’ll show you everything.’ They will put up a fight, they will be stubborn.

“You also need to tread very, very carefully when it comes to the owners of the league. They have such a hold over a lot of clubs.

“Newcastle need some clarity, they need an end to this. They need to know some reasons.

“It’s not going to happen overnight. They’ll stall as long as possible. There are lots of lawyers involved and people looking at the in and outs of everything.

“So this is no doubt going to drag on. It’s not going to be disclosed or finalised by the start of the season, that’s for sure.”

The Verdict: Would not be ideal

It certainly would not be ideal at all if the arbitration results were not disclosed before the start of the new season, especially in the middle of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle will want to go into the new campaign as best prepared as possible, and uncertainly surrounding the takeover will not help their cause.

If the results are positive for the Magpies, then the takeover process could be accelerated, but realistically there would not be enough time for the new owners-in-waiting to flex their financial muscles in the transfer market, assuming that a deal can be done quickly after the hearing ends.

Wolves transfer update on Matthew Hoppe

Wolves are reportedly expected to make a bid to sign Matthew Hoppe in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Cutrone future unclear

According to The Express & Star, Patrick Cutrone has returned to Molineux for pre-season training and hopes to have his future sorted out soon.

With his future in the balance, the Midlands club may be eyeing a move for a new striker to give cover for Raul Jimenez, with Kaio Jorge recently being linked with a move to the Black Country.

The Latest: Hoppe bid expected

As per 90min, Wolves, Tottenham, Southampton and Newcastle are all expected to reach out to Schalke 04 in the coming days with bids to sign Hoppe.

There is optimism that he can be sold for the right price, so it is certainly one to keep an eye on if you are a Wolves fan.

The Verdict: Sign

Described as a player with ‘real quality’ by Schalke manager Dimitrios Grammozis back in March, Hoppe endured a difficult 2020/21 season as the Gelsenkirchen club found themselves relegated from the Bundesliga.

Nonetheless, he still managed to score six goals and supply one assist in 22 top-flight games (Transfermarkt), and clearly impressed his boss with his individual performances.

The 1.91m (6 foot 2) colossus has been likened to Robert Lewandowski in terms of his playing style, and he could be a fantastic alternative source for goals to ease the burden on Jimenez.

At just 20 years of age, Hoppe is a player who Bruno Lage could develop into a top striker for years to come if Wolves can win the race for his signature.

Hadlee and Reid delighted with New Zealand's mental strength

New Zealand’s ability to overcome the hiccups of their bomb-disrupted tour to Pakistan, the inability to prepare properly due to rain in the West Indies and their controversial end to the one-day series, was a special delight from today’s first Test

Lynn McConnell25-Jun-2002New Zealand’s ability to overcome the hiccups of their bomb-disrupted tour to Pakistan, the inability to prepare properly due to rain in the West Indies and their controversial end to the one-day series, was a special delight from today’s first Test victory in Barbados for New Zealand selection chairman Sir Richard Hadlee.Holidaying on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Hadlee had to rely on CricInfo coverage to keep up with the news throughout the match but was delighted to be woken this morning by a newspaper reporter to be told the news of New Zealand’s 204-run victory.”All those disruptions could have affected them psychologically but they have overcome them and made history.”The side is going from strength-to-strength and is well-balanced. All the bowlers in the attack now are wicket-taking bowlers,” he said.Having some pace in Shane Bond’s speed was also a decided bonus for the team.”Shane Bond [who took his first five-wicket haul in the second innings], Ian Butler and Daryl Tuffey are all very inexperienced,” he said. The trio have only 17 Tests between them, but Bond achieved his career-best figures in the victory while Tuffey had his best performance two Tests earlier in the victory over England and Butler, his best, in the second Test against England. In their 17 Tests the trio have now taken 66 wickets between them at an average of 29.63.This is a far cry from the position New Zealand found themselves in when injury decimated the side on their tour of South Africa at the end of 2000.Hadlee said captain Stephen Fleming now had options in attack and an ability to keep at batsmen with pace, something that had not always been available with younger bowlers, in terms of experience, coming into the attack when others had been injured. As a result he was now in a position where if Daniel Vettori couldn’t get a breakthrough with his spin, he could go back to one of the fast bowlers to achieve it.”He now has the armoury to use effectively to bring about success. They are inexperienced, but they are gaining all the time and will get better for it,” Hadlee said. Now that this victory has been achieved Hadlee said it was time to wrap up the series win.It was a chance for the side to make a statement about where they are at in terms of their development.”Win one – lose one” had for too long been part of New Zealand’s results.Another win is what the team should be looking for and at the very least they should ensure that if they can’t win then they should try for a winning draw, he said. The victory had also highlighted the recent move by New Zealand Cricket to look after those players who could be classified as Test specialists who, because of the nature of modern touring, don’t have the warm-up games to prepare for matches.”Something different has to be done to prepare Test players. This has proved a point for the preparation undertaken. You can’t put a monetary cost on its value,” Hadlee said.New Zealand Cricket’s operations manager John Reid said the win was significant for the side.”It consolidates our third position on the world Test championship and is a very positive result.”He backed Hadlee’s comments about the preparation that had gone in for Bond, Robbie Hart and Mark Richardson.”It was an innovative approach but it has been very beneficial,” he said.Like Hadlee, Reid was most impressed with the mental strength the side had shown after the one-day losses, especially early in the tour.”They were pretty determined going into the Test series,” he said.Reid also hit out at news reports that were too quick in their judgmental approach of New Zealand’s position at the end of the first day.Such reporting needed to be kept in context within the conditions in which the match was being played.New Zealand had gained a position that allowed it to go on and win the game from the work done on the first day, but back here all the reports had been about what a disastrous first day it had been, Reid said.”Stephen Fleming played a man of the match role with his batting by giving the side an edge by making the one big score of the game,” Reid said.By rushing in and claiming New Zealand’s effort was sub-standard before the West Indies had batted in similar conditions, the critics had been proven to have made their judgments too quickly.

Everton fans react to Small strike report

16-year-old Everton defender Thierry Small failed to report for the first week of pre-season training, The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe has revealed.

Small is apparently looking to force a way out of Goodison Park, concerned that older full-backs Lucas Digne and Niels Nkounkou are blocking his path to first-team football.

Could Small be lured away from Everton?

Everton have a ‘bumper’ professional deal ready for Small’s 17th birthday on August 1, but ‘several’ European clubs are also admirers.

The list includes Manchester United and Arsenal domestically, as well as German giants Bayern Munich.

Small, who has recently taken on a new agent, was apparently in contact with the club on Monday.

He’s made 13 appearances for Everton at Under-23 level and earned his senior debut in an FA Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday in January.

The five-minute run-out officially made the Englishman Everton’s youngest-ever player.

Fan feed The Toffee Blues relayed The Athletic’s revelations, and here’s what supporters made of them.

Trego stars as Somerset match with West Indies ends as a tie

The last day of the match between Somerset and the West Indies ‘A’ was one of the most fascinating days seen at the County Ground for a long time

Richard Walsh26-Jul-2002The last day of the match between Somerset and the West Indies ‘A’ was one of the most fascinating days seen at the County Ground for a long time. The West Indies declared on their overnight total of 266 for 7, which left the Cidermen needing 454 to win, and all day to get them. When Chris Gayle started to bowl the last over of the day, Somerset needed 8 runs to win with their last pair at the wicket. Matt Bulbeck scored 5 off the first three balls, Graham Rose scored a single from the fourth and Bulbeck then levelled the scored from the fifth ball.Facing the final ball with just a single required for victory, the veteran Rose who batted with Matt Wood as a runner, gave a catch to Suliman Benn fielding at short fine leg, and the game ended as a tie, with honours even.Earlier there had been an impressive 140 from Pete Trego, which included 19×4’s and 2×6’s, Piran Holloway played another solid innings, and was unlucky to be out for 88, and later on Wes Durston batted sensibly for his 55, which came at a time when Somerset were really in the hunt.At the end of the day Somerset Coach Kevin Shine told me: "This was a brilliant game, when you consider that we were chasing 454, and had been outplayed for the first two days."He continued: "All of our debutants made a valuable contribution to the game, and today Pete Trego, Piran Holloway and Wes Durston have all played their part in helping us to get this result."Chief Executive Peter Anderson said: "As with the one day victory over Sri Lanka we have produced another excellent day’s cricket. It’s just a pity that were so few spectators here to see it."

No meio do segundo turno do Campeonato Brasileiro do ano passado ele teve o melhor período no Atlético, tendo marcado quatro gols em seis jogos.

Aston Villa: John Percy addresses Leon Bailey links

Reliable reporter John Percy has had his say on Aston Villa’s links to Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.

The Lowdown: Bailey links

Villa’s interest in Bailey emerged on Wednesday, with reports suggesting the club were eyeing up a £30m swoop for the wide man.

The 23-year-old is viewed as an attainable target by Villa and are thought to be readying an approach to the Bundesliga side.

Bailey, who scored 15 goals and registered 11 assists last season, has just under two years left on his Leverkusen deal.

The Latest: Percy’s post

Percy, who writes for The Telegraph, responded to a Villa supporter on Wednesday evening suggesting Bailey fits the criteria for Villa in terms of position and price, however, he didn’t feel a move is imminent.

Another Villa fan then quoted his tweet, sharing his disappointment, with Percy replying to the supporter in question, saying:

“Never said he wasn’t on the list mate”

Percy, who has over 120,000 followers, can get hundreds of retweets and thousands of likes on his transfer posts, but as this was a reply to a fan, it seemed to go under the radar with just two retweets.

The Verdict: Sign

Bailey could well be on Villa’s shopping list, according to Percy, and a move for the Jamaican could turn out to be an excellent piece of business.

He’s capable of playing on either flank or as a centre-forward, with his main position coming on the right.

Should he move to the Midlands, Dean Smith may well then decide to use Jack Grealish in a central role, if he stays at Villa Park of course.

A front four of Bailey, Grealish, Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins looks dangerous on paper, but a lot could happen between now and Villa’s opener against Watford on August 14.
