Update on Cooper’s Swansea future emerges

Steve Cooper does not look certain to leave Swansea City this summer, despite strong rumours of his exit from the Liberty Stadium.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who claimed in a post on Twitter that the 41-year-old is not nailed on to take over the vacant managerial position at Crystal Palace this summer.

The Swansea City manager has been heavily linked with the Premier League club in recent weeks, following Roy Hodgson’s retirement from football at the end of last season.

Levien will be buzzing

Having worked wonders since being appointed as the Swansea head coach in June of 2019, the fact that the former England U17 manager does not look certain to leave the Championship club this summer, despite being heavily linked with the Palace job, is sure to leave both fans and Jason Levien buzzing.

Indeed, in his first season in Wales, the 41-year-old led his side to a rather unexpected top-six finish in the second tier, before ultimately falling to a narrow play-off semi-final defeat to Brentford.

Cooper then bettered this feat in his second season at the club, finishing the regular season in fourth place and reaching the play-off final after beating Barnsley in the play-off semi-final, before once again losing out to Thomas Frank’s Brentford in the play-off final.

The 41-year-old’s reputation for developing young players has also resulted in Premier League sides offering the Swans a host of their young talents on loan deals, while the Englishman has also drawn praise for the style of football his side have demonstrated during his time at the club, as well as from his players, with Andre Ayew stating his belief that Cooper is a “quality” manager.

As such, with Levien undoubtedly hoping that his side can go one better than last season and clinch promotion to the top flight in their upcoming Championship campaign, retaining Cooper’s services this summer would very much appear to significantly increase the club’s chances of going on to achieve this feat.

Midlands handed Matabeleland their second Logan Cup defeat in a row when they beat them by nine wickets with a day to spare

Mehluli Sibanda03-Mar-2002Midlands handed Matabeleland their second Logan Cup defeat in a row when they beat them by nine wickets with a day to spare.Midlands scored 54 for one to win the match on the third day, after Matabeleland were all out for 213 in 88.3 overs, setting the visitors aneasy target. A brilliant performance by the Matabeleland tail saw the home side avoiding an innings defeat but that was not enough to prevent the visitors from romping to an easy victory. The home side resumed at 80 for five overnight and it seemed they would slump to an innings defeat as they lost two early wickets in the first few overs of the day. First to leave the field of play was vice-captain Ryan King, who departed for 28 runs when he was bowled by Campbell Macmillan, adding only nine runs to his overnight score of 19.Matabeleland’s hopes of a draw were dashed when Warren Gilmour was dismissedleg before wicket by John-Vaughan Davies for two runs. Gavin Ewing could not find the form that saw him score 106 not out in the match against Mashonaland as he put only 12 runs on the board before he pulled weakly at a Davies delivery and saw Paul Reilly take a brilliant catch at mid-wicket.Captain Colin Williams joined his son Mike McKillop and the two lifted Matabeleland’s innings, putting up 50 for the ninth wicket. When the captain came in the score was at 134 and he took it to 184 before departing the field of play. National team bowler Sean Ervine, surprisingly bowling spin due to a back injury, claimed the wicket of Williams when he dismissed him leg before wicket for 27.McKillop and tail-ender Tawanda Mupariwa put on 29 for the last wicket before McKillop was dismissed by Vaughan-Davies, caught by Craig Grant to end his magnificent run that saw him smash eight fours on his way to scoring 69. Mupariwa was left unbeaten on 16.Vaughan-Davies once again the toast of the Midlands bowlers, grabbing four for 21 in his 15.3-over spell with nine maidens. Captain Dirk Viljoen and Macmillan took two wickets each while James Kornford and Ervine took a wicket apiece.Midlands only lost one man and took 10.4 overs to seal the match a few hoursafter lunch. They lost opener Luther Mutyambizi when Mupariwa bowled himfor nine to grab his only wicket in first class-cricket. Craig Grant finished the match in dramatic fashion, smashing a four through gully to end on 12, an innings which consisted of three fours. Terry Duffin was also unbeaten on 25 with four fours.

Newcastle takeover update, Benitez insight

A promising update has been dropped on the potential takeover of Newcastle United amid some enticing insight involving Rafael Benitez.

The Lowdown: Benitez wanted

As per journalist Liam Kennedy, who has been following the takeover saga closely, Benitez is wanted by the potential owners-in-waiting to return to Tyneside, as the Spaniard helped bring them to the table in the first place.

The arbitration case between Newcastle and the Premier League over the failed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group is set begin in the coming months. A positive result in that for the Tyneside club could lead to the takeover process being accelerated and, if the bid were to go through, eventually a potential change in manager.

The Latest: Takeover confidence

According to Football Insider, the latest situation with regards to the potential takeover is that all parties involved are confident that the Premier League will sanction the deal after the arbitration hearing has taken place.

An industry source has also told the news outlet that close allies to Benitez have advised him to reject any job offer from Everton and instead bide his time to return to St James’ Park, assuming that the takeover can be pushed through.

The Verdict: Hire Benitez

Regardless of whether or not the takeover can be pushed through, the Magpies must consider hiring Benitez to replace Steve Bruce, should the latter leave his post.

Many Toon fans have previously called for the 61-year-old to come back, so he would certainly be a popular appointment. Benitez also has a vast amount of experience in managing in the Premier League, with both Liverpool and Chelsea as well as Newcastle, and so he should have little problems in handling the likely abundance of riches which would come with the potential takeover.

Reports that the concerned parties are confident that a deal can be done after the arbitration proceedings is a step in the right direction in terms of trying to get Benitez back to St James’ Park.

NUFC takeover group wanted Pochettino

Pete Graves has dropped some interesting Newcastle United insight on who the takeover consortium wanted as their new manager.

The Lowdown: Takeover fail

Last summer, it was reported that the proposed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group had failed.

If the bid had gone through, it is likely that the consortium would have wanted to appoint their own manager to take them forward, meaning that Steve Bruce would have had to leave.

There is still a chance that the takeover can be revived, providing a positive result for the St. James’ Park faithful in their upcoming arbitration case against the Premier League.

The Latest: Consortium insight

Replying to a Magpies fan who suggested that Mauricio Pochettino was coming to the North East to be their next boss, Sky Sports journalist Graves shared: ‘That’s who the consortium wanted.’

The Argentine has of course since become the coach at Paris Saint Germain, having left Tottenham Hotspur in November 2019.

The Verdict: What could have been

It certainly would have been a statement by the consortium to appoint Pochettino as their next manager if the original takeover deal went through.

Although his personal trophy cabinet is very bare, having never won a league title, the 49-year-old still has credentials, and has still achieved a lot in his managerial career so far, most notably guiding Spurs and PSG to a UEFA Champions League final and semi-final respectively (Transfermarkt).

Lauded as ‘unbelievable’ by Dele Alli back in February, and a ‘football genius’ by former Lilywhites goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes in October, he has no shortage of admirers when it comes to players he has managed.

Another former THFC player Andros Townsend even went as far as to claim that he is ‘the best manager in the world’ in April, and ‘Poch’ is certainly up there among the elite.

Nonetheless, he would have certainly been an upgrade on Bruce, and could have done special things at the Toon.

Dinesh Mongia clinches series 3-2 for India at Guwahati

Dinesh Mongia and Yuvraj Singh’s styles meshed perfectly and took India to a mammoth 333/6 in 50 overs, practically batting Zimbabwe out of the fifth and final one-dayer at Guwahati

Anand Vasu10-Mar-2002One has a penchant for tall scores in domestic contests. The other has made a name for himself as a ferocious batsman who revels in hitting the cover off the ball to the point of driving bowlers to desperation. Dinesh Mongia and Yuvraj Singh’s styles meshed perfectly and took India to a mammoth 333 for six in 50 overs, practically batting Zimbabwe out of the fifth and final one-dayer at Guwahati. Triumph by 101 runs followed as Zimbabwe wilted under the pressure of having to chase the huge score. All things considered, it must be said that the match was taken far away from the visitors at the end of the Indian innings. Sure, cricket is a funny game and all that, but it is not that side-splittingly humourous. India had the better measure of a wicket that was on the slower side, had the superior firepower, and they held their collective nerve better on the big day.Getting used to the pace of the track, Mongia was content working the ball well into the gaps, chipping away efficiently. Using the angled bat to great effect, Mongia provided a superb display of common-sense cricket.Earlier in the innings, however, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman both fell cheaply. Rahul Dravid (26), who was clean-bowled by Douglas Hondo, and Mohammad Kaif (5) also failed to get going. India were then in a spot of bother at 157/4 in the 31st over, and there was a chance that the scoring rate would dip and pressure would build. In the form he is in, however, it seems difficult to put pressure on Yuvraj Singh. The young left-hander, in sublime nick, got going from the very first ball. Punching through the covers with great placement and timing, Yuvraj sent the ball scurrying across the turf to the fence. Punjab teammate Mongia enjoyed the fireworks, and the pressure to score quickly lifted.Zimbabwe’s slow-medium bowlers struggled in the face of an all-out assault. Full tosses popped up with alarming regularity, and Yuvraj Singh nonchalantly clattered them away into the stands. There was almost no need for innovation as powerful drives had just enough zip to beat fielders who were scattered, jaded, and mostly reduced to spectators. The last 10 overs of the Indian innings provided the kind of power hitting that makes the shoulders of the opposition sag. A mammoth 121 runs came in that period, and came rather freely. Gary Brent, who replaced the injured Pommie Mbangwa, took the brunt of the punishment, returning figures of 9-0-74-0.Yuvraj’s entertaining knock came to an end abruptly in the 49th over when he hit Douglas Marillier straight to Travis Friend at long on. Most captains, however, would have been pleased with Yuvraj’s contribution – a sparkling 75 in just 52 balls with six fours and three sixes.Mongia then set his sights firmly on a century and achieved the task with ease – and then some. Although it took him 121 balls and 11 boundaries to reach three figures, Mongia’s foot seemed to be glued to the accelerator thereafter.Making room on the legside and slicing the ball through point with disdain, hitting back over the bowler’s head with power and placement, Mongia reached a mammoth 159 (147 balls, 17 fours, 1 six) as India amassed 333/6.Then came the Zimbabwean reply. What would it take? A long, steady hand from Alistair Campbell at the top of the innings? A blinder of a ton from Andy Flower? Some late heroics from the unorthodox Dougie Marillier? All of the above, perhaps, but none were forthcoming. As if chasing 334 for victory in a series decider were not difficult enough, match referee John Reid docked Zimbabwe two overs for not completing their quota of 50 in the allotted time.A series of token contributions from the top order – Campbell (31), Dion Ebrahim (42), Travis Friend (31) – suggested that the Zimbabwe team were not about to keel over in a hurry. But the fact that none of the visitors made it to even the half-century mark made it nigh on impossible to put up a serious chase.Grant Flower, with a valiant 48 (47 balls, 6 fours), helped keep the visitors’ hopes alive before he became Zaheer Khan’s first victim late in the order. Two balls later, a similar inswinging yorker took out the dangerous Marillier before he could get off the mark.Tatenda Taibu too fell for a duck, being run out just before the innings ended. Gary Brent, who was punished earlier in the day, was the last wicket to fall, reverse-sweeping Harbhajan Singh to short third man. With 4/33 from 9.1 overs, Harbhajan Singh was easily the most successful bowler on the day. Zaheer Khan with 3/29 was not far behind. The joy and relief on the faces of the Indian players was there for all to see when the game ended. Dinesh Mongia expectedly walked away with the Man of the Match and Man of the Series awards, and the youngster was all smiles. Success has come quite early for the hard-working Mongia, buth he should not get too carried away quite yet.Funnily enough, a member of today’s team, Vijay Bharadwaj, was the Man of the Series in his first-ever series – the LG Cup in Nairobi – only to be left out of the Indian team for some time to come. The youngsters of this Indian team thus need to keep their eyes keenly focussed on the World Cup that is now less than a year away.
