Celtic: Who will thrive under Eddie Howe?

If and when Celtic finally announce the appointment of a new manager, the man in charge will walk into a football club that is in dire straits.

The Hoops have lost their dominance on Scottish football and Parkhead will have no trophy from the 2020/21 season to celebrate.

They will also have to manage a massive rebuild of the playing squad. Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard are two potentially high profile exits while there will be a leadership void when Scott Brown heads to Aberdeen.

Leigh Griffiths could also leave while Tom Rogic and Ryan Christie have been linked with exits.

Consider Jonjoe Kenny, Moi Elyounoussi, Diego Laxalt and Shane Duffy will have to return to their parent clubs and the squad will be depleted.

If the new manager is Eddie Howe he needs to build his team around a very certain set of players. One player he simply has to unleash is Stephen Welsh.

With Ajer potentially heading for the departure lounge, the 21-year-old has the opportunity to become the real focal point of a much-maligned defence.

They have been a disaster this season and if anything sums that up it would be their 4-1 defeat to Rangers last weekend.

Welsh wasn’t at his best during that game. He was turned inside out by a 38-year-old Jermain Defoe late on as the Englishman rolled back the years to score their final goal.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/celtic-manager-transfers-eddie-howe-jesse-marsch-ryan-christie-siriki-dembele” title=”Read the latest Celtic managerial updates, transfer news, rumours and gossip!”]

It was a moment to forget for the young centre-half but it’s crucial to keep in mind just how inexperienced he still is. Give Welsh a manager who can grow young players and he could become a real star at Paradise.

After all, the 6 foot 3 brute has already negotiated one of the toughest tests in world football; Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

After featuring in the Europa League earlier this term, Welsh commented: “In the European games, the quality you come up against is world-class.”

The Scot added: “You look at Ibrahimovic, he is a brilliant player, he doesn’t move a lot but the quality shines through in the end.”

This has been a breakthrough campaign for the youngster but unfortunately, it will be one he is keen to eradicate from his mind swiftly.

Fortunately, the arrival of Howe could be game-changing. After all, you only need to look at the way the 43-year-old developed Nathan Ake at Bournemouth.

Ake signed for the Cherries on an initial loan deal before he was snapped up by Howe in a whopping £20m deal from Chelsea.

The Dutchman went on to play 121 times under Celtic’s potential new manager and he credits much of his development at centre-back for what Howe did with him.

Speaking in 2019, Ake said: “Even if you have a few good games, stuff like that, he makes sure that we watch clips together and look for little, little things – even if I’d had a good game – he will find something to help me get better.

“That’s perfect for me because, at my age, there’s still so much more to come and he’s the right man to help me improve.”

The defender is still particularly young but it was the guidance and tuition he received from Howe that ultimately made him a player that Manchester City wanted to spend £40m on last summer.

It would be quite something if Welsh was ever worth that much but the player and manager could forge a special bond if he finally pens terms in Glasgow.

Howe has repeatedly shown himself to be a developer of young talent and so with that in mind, he must unshackle and find a way to make Welsh better.

He has a first-class attitude and will give his all for the club, a trait that plenty in the squad certainly doesn’t possess right now. “He can give it out, he competes for everything, and when it doesn’t go his way, he takes that well too. He gets back up on his feet and he’s ready to go again,” Chris Sutton once recalled.

Given how poor the Hoops have been this season from a defensive point of view it will undoubtedly serve the manager’s best interests to play him.

Celtic should unleash Shaw over McCarthy

Once the transfer window opens, Celtic will have a colossal job on their hands.A number of Hoops players, including Odsonne Edouard and Kris Ajer, have been linked with the exit door while they have several loanees that will head back to their parent clubs after a spell at Paradise.

On the chalkboard

One man who will definitely leave the Bhoys behind this summer is Scott Brown as the midfield veteran heads to Aberdeen to take up a player-coach role.

His replacement in the middle of the park could be Crystal Palace’s James McCarthy.

The Irishman is out of contract at the end of the season and will be available to lure to Glasgow on a free transfer.

Celtic have been linked with the 30-year-old for a good few months now and he could well become Dominic McKay’s first Celtic signing.

GIVEMESPORT claim that talks between McCarthy and the Hoops are now at an advanced stage.

Forget McCarthy

Despite being a boyhood Celtic fan, they need to completely forget about signing him this summer.

That’s because they have a number of young players in the same position coming through that they’d be better off blooding.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/celtic-manager-transfers-eddie-howe-jesse-marsch-ryan-christie-siriki-dembele” title=”Read the latest Celtic managerial updates, transfer news, rumours and gossip!”]

The Hoops are in a transitional stage where they need to move away from older players and look towards the future.

Ismaila Soro is one player who should get a chance instead while they also have Luca Connell coming through the ranks.

However, there is a youngster who they will welcome to the club that should be given the limelight; Liam Shaw.

Celtic have agreed a deal to sign the 20-year-old, who is set to join up with his teammates at Lennoxtown for the first time this summer.

The Sheffield Wednesday youngster has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in England, playing in a multitude of positions. He can feature at centre-back but he also looks at home playing in midfield and using his long levers to stride forward.

Comfortable in possession and full of energy, his box to box style could completely reinvigorate this Celtic team.

He is adept in the air, winning 1.7 aerial duels per game but he also knows how to pick a pass and beat a man.

For instance, against Rotherham this year, he completed three key passes and four dribbles as Wednesday lost 2-1.

With Brown walking through the exit door this summer, the last thing they need to do is replace him with another ageing player. By utilising Shaw, it could breathe fresh life into a decrepit starting XI.

In a similar way to Ajer, he loves to burst forward, something we saw in the FA Cup earlier this season against Exeter.

He galloped beyond the halfway line in lung-busting fashion from centre-half before dancing past his marker on the right flank and fashioning a goal. It was a piece of play that The Mirror’s James Whaling said was “sensational.â€

Blessed with tremendous stamina and non-stop energy, McKay will need to urge the new management team to faze Shaw into proceedings as soon as possible.

Okay Yokuslu linked with West Brom exit

West Brom midfielder Okay Yokuslu is reportedly being eyed up by Turkish giants Fenerbahce, ahead of a potential summer exit from the Hawthorns.

The Lowdown: Yokuslu excels for West Brom

The Baggies have officially been relegated back to the Championship, following a disappointing return to the Premier League in 2020/21.

They essentially gave themselves too much work to do in avoiding the drop, with survival master Sam Allardyce unable to keep his side in the top flight.

One of the few positives this season has been the form of Yokuslu, however, who has excelled since joining on loan from Celta Vigo in the winter transfer window, providing quality and tenacity in the middle of the park.

The Latest: Midfielder linked with return to Turkey

Unfortunately, West Brom’s relegation has led to speculation surrounding the 27-year-old’s future, with Takvim [via Sport Witness] claiming that Fenerbahce see him as an ideal replacement for Luis Gustavo, most likely as a loan signing.

It seems unlikely that the Baggies will be able to retain Yokuslu’s services moving forward, given their drop down to the second tier of English football and his status as a temporary Baggie.

The Verdict: Tough to keep hold of Yokuslu

In truth, it is hard to begrudge Yokuslu not wanting to stay put at the Hawthorns, whether permanently or on loan, with the Turk good enough to be playing top-flight football – teammate Kyle Bartley hailed him as ‘brilliant’ and ‘tenacious’ back in February.

The sad reality of being relegated is that teams will lose their most important players – something West Brom have experienced so often, given their seesaw nature between the Premier League and the Championship in recent years.

It would be a huge positive if Yokuslu ended up staying put, but that feels unrealistic, with 31 caps for Turkey speaking volumes about his quality.

In other news, a pundit believes one West Brom player will be on the move this summer. Find out who it is here.

Everton must unleash Alex Iwobi on Wolves

Everton head into their clash with Wolves on Wednesday evening amid a spell of inconsistent form.

The Toffees have defeated Arsenal in the last month but they’ve also suffered some embarrassing results along the way.

With European football on the line, Carlo Ancelotti’s men somehow suffered a defeat to Sheffield United.

Everton didn’t look like scoring and succumbed to a goal from 17-year-old Daniel Jebbison.

If they are to have any chance of securing a spot among Europe’s finest next season, they will have to win against Wolves.

On the chalkboard

One area that Everton desperately need to improve in is going forward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored 21 goals this season but the performances of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison are leaving plenty to be desired.

Sigurdsson was dropped to the bench against the Blades but Ancelotti’s tricky Brazilian has been in abject form for a while now.

He’s not scored since the beginning of March, nor has he assisted a goal since December.

With that in mind, the Toffees should consider turning to Alex Iwobi when they face Wolves.

The Nigerian has had an average season at Goodison Park and with only one league goal to his name throughout 2020/21, he needs to improve. After all, the 24-year-old earns £100k-per-week in Merseyside.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-transfer-news-lukaku-leao-bissouma-berge-antony” title=”Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

However, his solitary strike this term came against Wednesday night’s opposition.

Back in January, Everton defeated Wolves 2-1 at Molineux with Iwobi thriving on the right-hand side.

He not only scored but had the beating of the Old Gold backline on numerous occasions. He completed three of five dribbles and won an impressive seven ground duels.

The winger has very rarely lived up to Arsene Wenger’s tag of “dangerous” but on that night he was a rampant threat, terrorising Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Iwobi could have a similar impact if he plays from the left and dislodges Richarlison this week.

That’s because Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo has had a tricky first campaign in England. He was mauled by Lucas Digne when the pair last met while he has notoriously struggled with tricky attackers.

You only need to look at the performance of Nicolas Pepe back in January when Wolves beat Arsenal.

Pepe nutmegged the defender in the first half before surging into the penalty area and scoring a wonderful solo goal.

As Iwobi demonstrated against the Molineux outfit several months ago, he also has everything in his locker to beat a man.

Ancelotti needs to consider unleashing him from the off.

AND in other news, Everton eye move for “very talented” £26m gem, he’d be a big upgrade on Coleman…
