West Ham welcome Sheffield United to the London Stadium on Saturday in what promises to be an enticing clash, but Irons supporters aren’t too confident of picking up a result against the Blades.

It is only the second time the two sides have met since falling out over the Carlos Tevez affair in 2007, so there could still be resentment amongst both sets of fans, with neither impressed with the behaviour of the other.

On this occasion, the talking should be done on the pitch, and the visitors should be up for the match after a brilliant 1-0 victory over Arsenal – a result which took them above Manuel Pellegrini’s side in the league table.

They now have 12 points from nine league games, with four clean sheets in that time, and therefore West Ham face a difficult task.

The Hammers struggled at home on the last occasion a well-organised came to visit – Crystal Palace – and with some of their most creative players lacking form, such as Manuel Lanzini, things don’t look promising.

That is the feeling from some fans, and from their reactions it is fair to say they would be pleasantly surprised if their side managed a result.

Bournemouth have just announced the signing of Liverpool’s Harry Wilson on a season-long loan deal, and there seem to be few complaints about the transfer.

The Reds’ young prospect gets to try his hand at Premier League football, having starred in the Championship for Derby last term with 16 goals to his name, and also gets to play under Eddie Howe, a man who has instilled an admirable footballing ethos at the Vitality Stadium.

As of now, the Wales international seems to be enjoying his time on the south coast.

The 22-year-old has already scored three goals in seven Premier League starts for the Cherries, including an outstanding freekick against Manchester City and a long-range screamer against Aston Villa.

While he is doing well, and his parent club back on Merseyside are also having an impressive season, it may have been a mistake from the European champions to let their academy graduate go.

Why?

Purely by watching the recent 1-1 draw against Manchester United, it’s clear there is an imbalance in attack when Mohamed Salah isn’t playing.

The Egyptian’s absence paved the way for Divock Origi to come into the side. The Belgian is a cult hero who came up trumps on numerous occasions last season, and has the talent to cause problems.

However, he operates best on the left and that is where Klopp put him at Old Trafford. That in turn means Sadio Mane has to go out onto the right, a position that neglects his skill set and potent style of incisive dribbling.

A timid performance ensued against the Red Devils. Klopp’s side had just four shots on target, and looked likely to be heading for a 1-0 loss but for Adam Lallana’s 85th minute equaliser.

In Origi’s case, he was substituted in the 59th minute after an ineffective display, one that contained no shots on target, no key passes and no successful dribbles.

This is not to suggest that, if Wilson had started instead, the Welshman would’ve starred and Liverpool would’ve run riot.

But in terms of the balance of the attack, Liverpool could have done with a left-footed player to come in and replace Salah in like-for-like fashion instead of compromising their style of play to incorporate Origi on the left.

Xherdan Shaqiri is also an option, one blessed with creativity, power and a blockbuster moment in the locker. Unlike Wilson, though, there is a suggestion that he is more naturally suited to a central attacking midfield role rather than a wide berth.

Anyway, why did Klopp see fit to loan Wilson out?

The Athletic report that the attacker is at Bournemouth to see how he handles regular Premier League action.

“Harry Wilson flourished in the Championship at both Hull and Derby and is now on a season-long loan at Bournemouth to see how he handles regular Premier League action. Significantly, the south coast club have no option to buy as Klopp still believes the Wales international can have a future at Anfield.”

Chelsea have demonstrated that a successful campaign in the Championship can be conducive to success at the elite level, with Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham firmly ingrained at the heart of Frank Lampard’s revolution.

Perhaps Klopp should have afforded a similar level of trust to Wilson and a major injury to Salah later in the season could expose the enormity of what was a relatively innocuous looking transfer decision.

Tomori made 47 appearances last season in defence, and has walked straight into Lampard’s XI at Stamford Bridge, not looking an inch out of place.

Abraham, who spent the season with Aston Villa – the side who broke Tomori’s, Mount’s and Derby hearts at Wembley back in May – racked up 26 league goals and the 22-year-old currently leads the way alongside Sergio Aguero at the top of the Premier League scoring ranks with eight goals this season.

The youngsters can have a huge say in Premier League proceedings – they just need to be trusted.

And this may not even be the first time that a loan agreement with Bournemouth comes back to bite the Reds.

Indeed, the decision to allow Nathaniel Clyne to join the Cherries in January earlier this year was ill-advised and poorly timed, one that ultimately left Klopp bereft of any natural options at right-back during a critical stage of the season.

Just days after the former Borussia Dortmund boss allowed the right-back to leave Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up a knock and, with Joe Gomez already out, Milner and Henderson had to share the responsibility of playing at right-back.

The title-chase took a turn in the absence of a natural candidate as West Ham, Leicester City and Manchester United all held Liverpool to draws.

At the time the decision to let Clyne leave seemed harmless, but the situation that unfolded soon after undermined that feeling and now there is already a twinge of Deja vu emerging with regard to Wilson.

Nothing has been decided at this stage in the season, but the United game exposed Liverpool’s toothless pragmatism in Salah’s absence and, without a dynamic left-footed option to fill the void, they may live to regret their decision to send their natural replacement to the south coast.

وقال تير شتيجن في مؤتمر صحفي: “إنها فرصة للفوز باللقب، من الواضح أننا نضع في الاعتبار ما حدث لنا أمام بلباو في السوبر الإسباني قبل بضعة أشهر، نأمل ألا يتكرر ذلك مرة أخرى”.

وخسر برشلونة السوبر الإسباني بنتيجة 3-2، بعدما لجأ الفريقان إلى الأشواط الإضافية.

وواصل: “حتى الأشواط الإضافية في السوبر كنا أفضل، لكن يمكن ملاحظة التعب، هذه المرة نحن على استعداد لمباراة الغد”.

وتابع: “سنستعد كالعادة للخروج على أرض الملعب والفوز، نحن متحمسون للغاية للفوز بتلك المباراة والكأس، لعب هذه المباريات أمر خاص، آخذ هذه اللحظات معي طوال العمر، وهذا ما يريد المرء تجربته كلاعب كرة قدم، كنت أنتظر اللحظة لأكون هنا مرة أخرى”.

وأردف: “إنها مباراة نهائية ونراها مستقلة عما يحدث في بقية الدوري، لكن إذا فزنا سنشعر بمشاعر طيبة للغاية وإذا خسرت ستشعر بمشاعر سيئة للغاية”.

واستمر: “لم نعتد أبدًا على الفوز بالألقاب بسهولة، هذا يحتاج إلى جهد كبير جدًا، يعني أن نكون مركزين بنسبة 100 % في موسم بأكمله، وصولنا إلى النهائي مستحق بالنظر إلى الجهد الذي بذلناه للوصول، وسنبذل قصارى جهدنا للفوز غدًا أيضًا”.

واستكمل: “إنها مباراة نهائية، النسبة فيها 50 – 50 %، ولكن إذا أدينا بنفس الطريقة التي لعبنا بها قبل فترة التوقف الدولي، فلدينا العديد من الخيارات، لكننا نلعب دائمًا مباراة كاملة للغاية”.

واعترف: “بعد فترة التوقف الدولي كان الأمر صعبًا بعض الشيء بالنسبة لنا، لكن كان من المهم بالنسبة لنا الفوز أمام بلد الوليد، وفي الكلاسيكو يمكن أن يحدث أي شيء دائمًا، في الشوط الثاني أمام ريال مدريد قدمنا أداءً جيدًا وبذلنا جهدًا جيدًا، ولكن علينا فعل ذلك طوال المباراة”.

وأكد: “لن نفكر فيما سيأتي بعد النهائي في الدوري الإسباني، نحن نركز فقط في مباراة الغد، لكن صحيح أن لقاء الغد يمكنه أنه يمنحنا دفعة لما هو قادم، يجب أن يتمتع الفريق بشخصيته، وعندما تصبح الأمور صعبة، يتعين على اللاعبين الذين ظلوا معهم لسنوات عديدة أن يحاولوا مساعدة الصغار لأنهم سيحملون المسؤولية لسنوات عديدة قادمة، ذلك لا يتطلب سوى القليل من الجهد”.

وأضاف: “الخسارة؟ الرياضي يتعرض لكل شيء، إذا لم نفز سنكون حزينين، لكننا نأمل ألا يحدث هذا، مع العلم أن الموقف أصبح متوترًا في بعض الأحيان، وهو أمر يحدث أحيانًا، لكننا الآن أكثر استرخاءً في النادي ونسير جميعًا في نفس الاتجاه”.

واختتم: “لا أعطي أهمية كبيرة لشارة القيادة، ليس لأنني لا أحترمه، ولكن لأن لدينا فريق يتمتع بشخصية كبيرة، ومن الطبيعي أن أولئك أصحاب الخبرة في الفريق يحاولون جميعًا قيادة اللاعبين، حتى بدون الشارة، هذا ما نحاوله جميعًا”.

قال الأرجنتيني رودلفو أروابارينا المدير الفني لفريق نادي بيراميدز، إنه سعيد للغاية بالفوز على نكانا بهدف دون مقابل وضمان التأهل للدور ربع النهائي من بطولة كأس الكونفدرالية الإفريقية، مشددًا على أن الفوز والثلاث نقاط شيء مهم للغاية لإنهاء مرحلة والبدء في أخرى بمشوار البطولة.

وأضاف المدير الفني، في المؤتمر الصحفي عقب المباراة، أن بيراميدز حضر لزامبيا من أجل الفوز والتأهل، مشددا على أن التأهل هو المهم للغاية واللعب في نهار رمضان أمر صعب، متابعًا: “أهنئ اللاعبين على الروح والأداء المميز في ظل تلك الظروف الصعبة”.

شدد المدرب على أنه كان من المهم إغلاق صفحة كأس الكونفدرالية في هذا التوقيت والتركيز في مباريات الدوري المصري الممتاز، خاصة وأن الفريق مرتبط بمواجهات غاية في الصعوبة، وأمامه مهمة اللعب كل 3 أيام، وكان يجب إغلاق صفحة إفريقيا والتركيز في الدوري المحلي.

Well, that was a quick turnaround wasn’t it? Having opened the campaign in miserable fashion, including a truly shocking 2-0 defeat at Newcastle, Manchester United appear to have turned the proverbial corner.

The Red Devils’ sharp revival got kick-started with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Premier League leaders Liverpool, before securing three consecutive away wins against Partizan Belgrade, Norwich and Chelsea, in impressive fashion. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are once again on their travels when they take on Bournemouth on Saturday, and judging by the form book, this looks like another banker for a victory.

Whilst the Manchester side have bounced back in fine fettle, their opposition have floundered in recent weeks. Since beating rivals Southampton 3-1 at St Mary’s, Eddie Howe’s men have suffered a sharp drop in form – and quite significantly, goals. They have failed to hit the back of the net in four out of their last five games, including going scoreless in their previous three.

That despite them boasting the likes of Callum Wilson, Josh King and Dominic Solanke as their forward options. So when United take to the field on Saturday afternoon, they will no doubt be licking their lips of claiming another priceless win in the league. And that is exactly the kind of frame of mind Solskjaer has to absolutely ensure doesn’t creep in.

Confidence is a great thing in small, measured doses. But if it spills over into arrogance, then you’ve got a huge problem. For all their recent run of form, it has only been four games. And that too, only over the space of a week or so. The sense of excitement could quickly be shattered if they fail to maintain their composure and work ethic when they take on Bournemouth.

Make no mistake about it, however bad things get at United, they will always remain a prized scalp for the opposition. And if they get overly complacent against the Cherries on Saturday simply because of both sides’ recent form, then they will get brought back down to Earth with a heavy thud.

Late in a game against Manchester City recently the hosts Crystal Palace gained a corner and on came Christian Benteke from the bench to do what he used to do better than most.

Striding purposely among the melee of players inside the penalty area he mimed to the corner-taker exactly where he wanted it – right on his forehead – and the delivery was duly inch perfect.

The Belgian rose like a salmon and planted the firmest of headers powerfully towards the far corner of the goal only to see Ederson stretch out an arm and palm the ball onto the crossbar and out to safety.

Benteke crumpled to the ground in sheer dismay and he did so because he knew it would continue: the barbs, the chuckling. He knew he would still be regarded by the cruellest of contradictions: a goal-scorer who couldn’t score.

Harshly put this is akin to a heart surgeon incapable of performing heart surgery but it wasn’t always the case for the 28-year-old. At Aston Villa he averaged just shy of a goal every two games scoring 49 in 101 appearances. He was also, for what it’s worth, unplayable on his day. In a single season with Liverpool the expensively-purchased forward was hardly prolific but nine Premier League goals is still a semi-acceptable number considering the abrupt arrival of Jurgen Klopp suddenly plummeted him down the pecking order.

In late April Benteke opened the scoring against Arsenal and the relief etched onto his face was understandable because his header ended a remarkable drought that has lasted 358 days. If he believed that was a turning point to his woes however he was very much mistaken because ever since that sunny spring day another drought has emerged, one that persists to this day.

It’s hard to imagine how a proud international forward deals with that but there is just a tiniest sliver of consolation it is this: within the annals of the Premier League he is not alone.

Paul Stewart (Liverpool)

A handful of others went longer without finding the net but Stewart is included here due to the strange quirk of scoring on his Premier League debut for the Reds then managing to draw a complete blank for the rest of his disappointing spell there.

A solitary strike in 32 games is a pitiful return for a player who pulled up proverbial trees for Manchester City which prompted Graeme Souness to shell out £2.3m for him (a lot of money in 1992). A series of loan spells ensued, featuring none other than Palace, before Stewart ended a once glistening career with Workington.

Richard Cresswell (Sheffield Wednesday, Leicester City and Stoke City)

How much more difficult is it to score in the top flight compared to the lower leagues? Ask the former England under-21 man because he knows better than anyone.

In the Championship, Cresswell averaged roughly one goal per three full ninety minutes, a solid if largely unspectacular return.

Whenever he was called upon to trouble elite defences however the goals would disappear faster than an ice cube in the desert. A woeful run of 45 fruitless games stands out for all the wrong reasons, and his overall Premier League record finished at just two in 66 outings, both of which were scored in the 1999/2000 season.

Luis Boa Morte (West Ham United)

The Portuguese international’s goal-shy spell in East London is well worth gawping at in disbelief even if technically he was a wide attacking threat rather than an outright front man.

In five seasons and 109 games with the Hammers, Boa Morte scored precisely twice and if the total blank drawn from his final campaign startles that is nothing compared to the combined efforts of 2007/08 and 2008/09. Games played = 56. Goals – nought. Shots = quite a lot, probably.

وكان مانشستر يونايتد قد فاز أمس على روما بستة أهداف لهدفين في ذهاب نصف نهائي الدوري الأوروبي.

وواصل في تصريحات بالمؤتمر الصحفي: “بمجرد أن نفوز بمباراة الغد، سنفكر فيما سيحدث وبعد ذلك يمكنك أن تسألني عن أي شيء يخص مشاعري، كل ما يمكنني فعله الآن هو التعافي قدر الإمكان من المباراة التي لعبناها في باريس”.

وتابع: “إنها مباراتنا السادسة على التوالي، حيث الكثير من السفر ونحن متعبون في العديد من الجوانب، سنسافر ونلعب غدًا ظهرًا، ليس لدينا وقت إضافي للتعافي من باريس، وعلينا بعد كل ذلك التركيز على ما يمكننا فعله لتحقيق انتصار مهم لنكون أقرب من أي وقت مضى إلى أن نكون أبطالًا بعد اللعب لمدة 10 أشهر”.

Well that certainly was a turn up for the books.

It was almost as if he read what we wrote about him last week and decided to put in an ‘I’ll show you’ performance.

We said last week that if you just looked at the raw numbers of the situation, it was rather baffling to see Yuri Ribeiro constantly in the starting line-up for Nottingham Forest. It was even more baffling when you compared it to his main contender for that spot in Jack Robinson.

However, he knuckled down and put in quite a performance, enough so that he managed to be named in the WhoScored.com Team of the Week for his displays.

If you take a look at his numbers (from WhoScored), it’s obvious to see why. He made 5 tackles, completed 40 passes, 3 of them leading to chances while also amassing an 82% pass completion rate, and having a 100% dribble success rate too.

There are a number of questions that come off a performance like that. Can he be trusted to keep up this level of performance going forward, or was this merely a one-off performance?

Did he ‘step up to the occasion’ as it were, given the magnitude of a match with Derby County? Is he going to return to the norm once we get back from the international break? It all remains to be seen.

Maybe this was something that was always going to happen once he’d had a chance to get settled into the first team. He only arrived in the summer from Benfica, but even if simply settling down was the case, it’s taken an awfully long time for those adjustments to kick into place.

Hopefully, this performance wasn’t the exception and can instead become the rule.

Nottingham Forest haven’t got much room for error when it comes to promotion this season, with FiveThirtyEight giving them just a 15% chance of getting promoted this season. That means that he can’t afford to go back to the levels of production that made us question his position in the first place.
