Pundit View: Prutton backing Aston Villa to overcome difficult Rotherham clash

[ad_pod ]

Giving his usual EFL predictions to Sky Sports, David Prutton has determined how he thinks Aston Villa’s match with Rotherham on Wednesday evening will play out, claiming the Villains will prevail 2-0.

What’s he said?

With both teams having something to play for, Prutton thinks that Rotherham may be able to cause a bit of a scare as the Millers try desperately to stay in the division. Speaking to Sky Sports, the former player said:

“Rotherham are still within reach of survival, and they will fancy their chances of giving Aston Villa a scare at home, even though Dean Smith’s side are in such good form.”

The pundit then chose to focus on Villa’s last gasp win in their previous game, explaining that despite Paul Warne’s side potentially providing stiff opposition, they should be able to maintain their good form. He added:

“That was a huge result for Villa at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday as they look to seal a top-six spot. Rotherham is a tough place to go but I can’t see them not continuing their incredible run.”

All to play for

Given Rotherham’s position in the table, on paper, this match should be a walk in the park for Smith’s side. But fighting relegation, they will be battling hard for a result after defeating Nottingham Forest last weekend.

It’ll be a tough game for Villa but Prutton is right to predict that they’ll come out on top. The confidence they will have gained from that incredible win over Wednesday last Saturday will be immense and the effect those two injury-time goals will have cannot be underestimated.

The fact both teams have something to play for will make this a fascinating clash. However, given their six-match winning streak Villa should have enough about them to continue in the same fashion.

Does the ghost of Demba Ba continue to haunt Liverpool ahead of Chelsea showdown?

[ad_pod ]

April 27th 2014 is a date that has gone down in Premier League folklore. Its events are burned into our retinas. Its highlights – should you not be of a Liverpool persuasion – has since been memed more times than a piano-playing cat.

It was on this sunny afternoon that Jose Mourinho brought his Chelsea team up to Merseyside with the devout intention of spoiling a party while much more significantly – and an aspect so often over-looked with the passage of time – putting themselves firmly back into that year’s title race.

At the start of that memorable day Liverpool were on 80 points with Chelsea chasing on 75. Manchester City trailed on 74 but had a game in hand on both. After a frenetically competed fight at the top there were but a handful of games left.

At lunchtime, ahead of the 2.05pm kick-off the Liverpool supporters welcomed their team coach with a sea of red and fire. A victory here and they were surely champions in waiting. Two weeks earlier, following a highly dramatic see-saw win over Manchester City, their captain had spoken: “We don’t let this slip. We go again at Norwich”.

We all know what happened next. We all know how the Liverpool captain’s words became cruelly portentous.

What we perhaps don’t remember so sharply – again another aspect lost to time – is that later that day Manchester City then had to travel to Selhurst Park to fully capitalise on the Reds’ (sorry) slip. They did so by winning 2-0 with an early Edin Dzeko strike calming the nerves.

It is a strange quirk of fate indeed that has brought these two exact fixtures to the fore again this weekend with Liverpool once more ahead of Manchester City with mere games to spare. And considering what happened last time it is a legitimate question to ponder whether the heightened and dramatic events of 2013/14 have any relevance to the present-day title scrap?

Does the ghost of Demba Ba still haunt the fans, if not the team who are a completely different composition now to then, bar Jordan Henderson? Undoubtedly so. Liverpool fans truly believed that was going to be ‘their year’ and invested a great deal of heart and soul into the contest, particularly as the finish line neared. To have it snatched from them in such bizarre circumstances must have been gut-wrenching.

Nerves therefore will be even more spiked this Sunday, with a clear need to exorcise a dark day and very public failing. It is nerves that will manifest itself as fervour and tremendous noise. But what about if the stalemate is not broken as half-time approaches? Might the memories then come flooding back?

As for City – who incidentally have three remaining players from that time in Kompany, Silva and Aguero – any positive learned behaviour from that day is lost due to them playing first this time out. The seasoned pros might well think back and smile but more so for the squad as a whole the memory of last season’s tight 0-0 draw will be much more prominent.

The Chalkboard: West Brom must continue to play two up front

[ad_pod ]

Now that James Shan is in charge of West Brom until the end of the season he can finally get to work on fully instilling his own ideas into the club.

The 40-year-old finds himself in a unique situation. Initially, he would have thought he’d be there for a minimum of a couple of games but now he’s been tasked with steering them through the final weeks of the season.

For the most part he’s earned his call. That’s despite what could have been a damaging 3-2 loss against Bristol City. But after reverting to a tactic that had worked under Darren Moore, Albion got back to winning ways last weekend.

It was a gamble but it paid off, particularly with their two key men looking as good as they have been all season.

On the chalkboard

West Brom flirted with the idea of a three-man defence earlier in the season. However, after losing matches against Wigan, Blackburn and Hull in October and November it was quickly ditched.

Since then they’d predominantly played with a four-man defence but that embarrassing defeat against Bristol City meant something had to change. Not many would have seen the return of a 3-5-2 formation, though.

The Baggies don’t really have the personnel to play in this way, but despite that, it worked to devastating effect against Preston.

The change was originally inspired by a need for more defensive stability. It had that desired effect but if anything, it benefitted the attack more. It’s something that shouldn’t come as a great shock though.

When Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle have played as a pair this term, they’ve both had a greater influence than when one’s been forced to play out wide.

There are still faults defensively in this Baggies team but when you boast the attack they do, it seems foolish to ignore a tactic that would get the best out of two players who have scored 21 goals apiece.

Look at him now: Fernando Morientes and Liverpool

Before Fernando Torres came Fernando Morientes, and he was lightyears away in terms of ability.

We think most Liverpool fans would agree with us when we say that the club have been fairly unlucky when it comes to signing Spanish players – other than Torres, Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina, of course. Fernando Morientes is just another flop added to a list of other embarrassments including Iago Aspas, Suso, and Luis Alberto.

Morientes had made himself quite the name before he arrived at Anfield. After scoring 36 goals (yes, 36) in two seasons with Real Zaragoza, the forward earned himself a move to Real Madrid. He won the Champions League three times between 1998 and 2002 and was a finalist two years later with Monaco scoring nine goals in 12 games. On paper, the 2004 European Striker of the Year should have been so good, he even earned himself a recall back to Madrid. They actually wanted him back. And we do not blame them, 99 goals in 261 games make for pretty good viewing.

Expectations were understandably high when Morientes made the move to link up with his new Liverpool teammates in 2005 to the tune of £6.3million (as per Telegraph), but the reality of his performances soon brought things crashing back down. Two goals in his opening five games did not look too bad, but the desperate one in 11 following that really was pathetic.

The Premier League had not been kind to him, but the Champions League, where he had been so prolific in the past, offered a charitable helping hand. Two goals against CSKA Moscow and a wonder-strike against Anderlecht should have given him the confidence to kick on, but nothing could save the sinking ship.

Five goals in 28 matches the following season is the kind of record that encourages people to make bold claims like, ‘my nan could do better’ or ‘put me on and I will score me’.

He was moved on after just 16 months at Anfield joining Valencia in July 2006.

La Liga was a little kinder to him than the Premier League. A goal in every home game at the Mestalla in his opening season was truly remarkable stuff, but the seven goals in 42 matches the following two terms was a little less impressive.

Morientes’ goal scoring days were pretty much out of the window when he joined Marseille at the tender age of 33, and though he managed to lift the French domestic title providing a single goal in the process, we would go as far to say he probably did not deserve it.

The Spaniard announced his retirement from football in August 2010 but made a very brief return to football four-and-a-half years later to join DAV Santa Ana in the Madrid regional championships.

His most recent position in football came as manager of second-tier side Fuenlabrada, but he was sacked after just 25 games in charge.

Disgraceful: Leeds fans aren’t happy with what Marcelo Bielsa was asked

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans have taken to Twitter in fury after Marcelo Bielsa was asked if he’d be spying on Derby again, with both teams now set to face each other in the play-off semi-finals.

The former Marseille boss came under fire back in February after a member of Leeds’ staff was spotted outside the Rams’ training ground, before he later admitted to sending a spy to watch every single side his men have faced this season.

Who are the best away fans in the Championship? Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden gives his top 10 in the video below…

The English Football League hit Leeds with a whopping £200,000 fine for their actions, which Bielsa paid in full himself.

So, having had to shell out such a sum, it is no wonder why Bielsa didn’t take kindly to being asked if he’d be spying again, and then to be told he has no sense of humour after the journalist in question said he was only joking.

Let’s see what the livid Leeds fans on Twitter have been saying about the incident…
