Man United fans can have no complaints if Fellaini decides to find a more loving home

Jose Mourinho’s refusal to sanction a departure in January shows how immensely disappointed he’ll be if Marouane Fellaini leaves Manchester United on a free transfer next summer. After a revival in popularity under the Portuguese, some Red Devils supporters will be left disappointed as well. And sometimes in football, disappointment can turn into fury or at the very least an underlying sense of resentment – the idea of an important player turning his back on the club over the issue of wages inevitably doesn’t sit well with the die-hards.

Yet, supporters can have no genuine complaints should the Belgium international decide to move on next summer. Despite the criticism he’s relentlessly received, despite the perception of him being the poster-boy of the attritionalisation of United’s style of play over the last four years, few players have sacrificed as much as Fellaini to be a part of the post-Ferguson era.

In fact, Fellaini’s first sacrifice came before he was officially made a United player; wavering a £4million loyalty bonus owed to him by Everton to secure a transfer to Old Trafford on summer Deadline Day 2013.

But more significantly than money, Fellaini has given up what are theoretically the peak seasons of his career, arriving at Old Trafford as a 26-year-old, to be little more than a squad player for the Red Devils – accepting his unique traits will only be applicable to certain scenarios and inevitably limit his chances of holding down a regular starting berth.

Regardless, Fellaini has never moaned or complained; he’s done, quite simply, what every Manchester United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson has asked of him – whether it’s to knock down long balls in the final third, fight and scrap at the base of midfield or provide gangly dynamism in between.

And there’s something to be said for the fact that every United manager Fellaini has played under has turned to him in times of need. Even Louis van Gaal, a manager whose entire philosophy centred around the technical quality to retain possession to a frustratingly laborious degree, depended on Fellaini to inject aggression, physicality and goal threat into his often-rudderless sides.

Without Fellaini’s six Premier League goals during 2014/15, three of which were game-winning goals and one of which was an outright winner against Crystal Palace, the Dutchman may not have even survived his first season with the Red Devils. It certainly would have put their Champions League qualification in jeopardy.

In many ways, that encapsulates the paradox of an idiosyncratic talent like Fellaini becoming such an unexpectedly influential figure at a club like Manchester United, famed for their exuberance and attacking flair. While the towering midfielder may pale in comparison technically and intellectually to the man he immediately succeeded in United’s midfield, the legendary Paul Scholes, he’s a world-class executor of the very specific strengths of his own game; most particularly aerial dominance in both boxes.

There are few players in world football, and even fewer at clubs of Manchester United’s magnitude, who can turn hopeful hoofs forward into something more significant and substantial with the same consistency. Fellaini, whether you love or loathe him, is undoubtedly a rare breed in the modern game.

In that sense, Fellaini has clearly been an under-valued and under-appreciated figure for the vast majority of his United career. Only this season has it truly felt as if the lion’s share of United support have warmed to the Belgian, and even that acceptance came six months after some Red Devils supporters booed him for simply warming up following a costly mistake against former club Everton the weekend prior.

Most of his United tenure has attracted scoffs and groans for largely superficial reasons; association with David Moyes and subsequently styles of play that have inevitably failed to match the entertaining glamour of the affluent Ferguson years.

“He’s a very important player for me. Much more important than you can imagine. I feel weaker without Fellaini in my squad. It doesn’t matter if he’s on the pitch or bench. So if his condition improves he’ll be selected.”

Fellaini may now be a considerably more important player, one Mourinho claims he ‘feels weaker’ without, in comparison last season and that may well be recognised more by the Old Trafford doubters who once jeered his very name.

But the simple fact is that Fellaini’s given everything to support United during their most difficult and turbulent era since the 1970s – his best years and at times his reputation – with incredibly sparing gratitude or reward. If Fellaini decides to leave that all behind next summer for a new chapter in his career, no United supporter can justifiably hold a grudge.

After such servitude, Fellaini deserves to find a home where he’s truly loved.

Liverpool fans urge club to sign Bordeaux winger Malcom after stunning goal

Reported Liverpool target Malcom scored a stunning goal – his second in the space of just a few days – for Bordeaux in their 3-2 defeat against Dijon on Friday night, and Reds fans have urged their club to sign the exciting winger.

The Sun reported back in February that the Merseyside outfit and Manchester United were keen on the 20-year-old, who has scored seven goals from out wide this season, and Jurgen Klopp certainly will have been impressed with his latest long-range effort and his performances in general this term.

Against Dijon, the Brazilian cut in from the right wing with a fine piece of skill before unleashing a 40-yard rocket into the top corner with his left foot.

Liverpool supporters were quick to have their say on the thunderbolt via social media, and while one simply said “sign Malcom”, another said the winger “reminds me of Coutinho”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Potential Consequences: Manchester United signing Xherdan Shaqiri

According to The Sun, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is eyeing a transfer swoop for Xherdan Shaqiri following Stoke City’s relegation to the Championship, which has subsequently made him available this summer for the bargain price of just £12million.

The Switzerland international enjoyed his most potent Premier League campaign to date last term, with eight goals and seven assists, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Potters avoiding the drop and there are certainly question marks over whether Shaqiri’s workshy attitude negatively outweighed the significance of his impressive output.

With that in mind, we take a look at the potential consequences – some good, some bad – of Mourinho bringing the 26-year-old to Old Trafford this summer.

Lingard left without obvious starting XI role

Jesse Lingard’s been one of England’s standout performers at the World Cup, a gorgeous goal against Panama emphasising his importance to Gareth Southgate’s side. At club level though, it’s not wholly obvious where he fits into United’s starting XI – and the arrival of Shaqiri, even if the Stoke City talisman is going to be a squad player at best – would only seem to further muddy the situation.

Lingard’s best performances last season came at No.10, but that was mostly during Paul Pogba’s absence and Mourinho is yet to find a way of effectively fitting his club-record signing in the same side as a central attacking midfielder. That saw Lingard end the season on the right wing, which is where he started the FA Cup final, but that will likely be Shaqiri’s predominant role at Old Trafford.

The only alternative is to push him deeper into midfield, replicating the role he’s thrived in for England. But the arrival of Fred suggests that option hasn’t entered Mourinho’s thinking, so Lingard looks set to fall down the pecking order once he returns from international duty. Perhaps the best he can hope for is being a second-choice on the right and in midfield.

Juan Mata leaves

Juan Mata has been only a peripheral figure in Mourinho’s plans since the former Chelsea pair were reunited at Old Trafford but Shaqiri’s arrival would pretty much force him out the exit door.

The Spaniard and the Swiss are essentially like-for-like players – No.10s who look to peel in from the right wing, albeit the latter being considerably more direct than the former.

Younger and signed on longer terms than Mata’s contract, which expires next summer, it’s pretty obvious which mercurial attacking midfielder Mourinho will prioritise if both are at his disposal.

Rated at £27million by Transfermarkt, Shaqiri’s arrival will render Mata more valuable to United in the transfer market than on the pitch – if that’s not the case already.

United add to their potency from long range

No Premier League side scored more goals from outside the box than United last season, level with Manchester City on a whopping 13, and Shaqiri would only add to that impressive fire power. He topped the player charts for goals from that distance, bagging five in 2017/18 despite Stoke’s relegation plight.

And it shouldn’t be underestimated how significant that could prove to be for United. Mourinho’s game-plan, especially for the heavyweight encounters, essentially boils down to protecting his own goal and hoping one of his four main offensive talents provides a moment of individual ingeniousness at the other end.

Shaqiri, while inconsistent at times, is certainly capable of doing that. He only needs a few yards outside the box to score, and that’s exactly the kind of match-winning quality Mourinho wants from his attacking options.

So, Man United fans, should Mourinho swoop for the Stoke star? Let us know by voting below…

Man City’s Zinchenko deal could indicate where 18-year-old wonderkid’s future lies

The Manchester City fans in the Transfer Tavern have been largely disappointed by the news that their club have agreed a deal with Wolves over the transfer of Oleksandr Zinchenko, although any potential deal hinges on his willingness to move to Molineux.

The Breakdown

Following a season of admirable compromise and exemplary professionalism from Zinchenko in which he predominantly played as a left-back to fill in for the injured Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph, the Ukraine international has been presented with an opportunity to depart the club.

It would be grossly unfair to criticise Man City for accepting a £12 million fee which could rise to £16 million as reported by journalist Tim Nash (via CityWatch) – a transfer which carries a feeling of inevitability.

A growing trend in clubs who aim to challenge for honours in the Premier League concerns their approach towards the academy.

No longer is the academy a breeding ground for young talent to showcase their potential and eventually climb through the ranks into the senior squad, it is now a money-making machine designed to prepare players for a future career at the top level, but not with the club they begin their journey with.

The case of Zinchenko is different as he only joined City in 2016 in a deal worth £1.6 million, but the same principle seems to have applied to a player who is certainly capable of holding his own in the Champions League at just 22-year-old.

That principle is of course, that, first and foremost, emerging talent can be used to balance the books after demonstrating a certain level of potential either on loan or following a handful of sporadic appearances at their host club – potential which justifiably commands a generous transfer fee.

It’s difficult to argue with that approach and fire criticism towards a club’s hierarchy who are tasked with balancing the books whilst financing high quality acquisitions and paying out extortionate wages to players in this financially mind-boggling modern era.

Of course, that will not ease the natural concerns of Brahim Diaz who will certainly have taken note of City’s decision to sell both Pablo Maffeo and now Zinchenko and consider it an indication that he may suffer the same fate in the near future.

The question Diaz unfortunately needs to ask himself is: am I playing for my Man City future or for my transfer value?

At this moment in time it’s likely that City have not completely decided on whether Diaz has a part to play in the future or whether they are merely preparing him for a big-money transfer in the coming years.

With that in mind, the upcoming season could be absolutely crucial for Diaz’s future at the Etihad Stadium regardless of whether he is sent out on loan or is used as a backup player once again.

Zinchenko’s imminent sale is proof that consistently solid performances for the first-team squad may not be enough to secure a place within one of the most competitive squads in world football, so Diaz will certainly have plenty to be concerned about this summer as City’s latest move suggests his long-term future will be played away from the club.

Everton fans react as Seri seemingly nears Fulham move

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Fulham have won the race to sign Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri, who is rated at £27m by Transfermarkt.

[ad_pod ]

Seri, who has also been linked with West Ham United and Chelsea this summer, is believed to be keen on a move to the Premier League ahead of the new campaign.

Everton have also been credited with an interest, meanwhile, and their supporters have been reacting to suggestions that Seri is on the verge of joining Fulham.

With respect to Fulham, Seri was strongly linked with Barcelona last summer, and it would be a surprise if he moved to Craven Cottage ahead of the 2018-19 season.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”269905″ player=”12034″ title=”Football’s Coming Home The Myth Behind ‘Three Lions'”]

Fulham are seemingly going to pay £35m to sign Seri in a deal that will send shockwaves around Europe.

Everton fans, meanwhile, are still twiddling their thumbs as they wait for some transfer activity to arrive before the end of the month.

The Merseyside club’s supporters have been airing their views on the latest Seri news, and a selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Aston Villa fans tell club to remain firm amid Chester interest

Stoke City are believed to lead the race for Aston Villa centre-back James Chester.

The 29-year-old was again in outstanding form for Villa last term, but the club’s financial problems could mean that he is sold in this summer’s transfer window.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Stoke are prepared to pay £7m to sign the Wales international ahead of the 2018-19 Championship campaign.

The Villa fans have been reacting to the speculation, and it would be fair to say that they are not interested in a deal at that price.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”271323″ player=”12034″ title=”Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus on Football Manager”]

There is a general acceptance that Chester is likely to move on this summer, but the Villa supporters feel that at least £10m is a fair price for the former Manchester United youngster.

Villa are not exactly in the best of positions to negotiate at the moment, but they have every right to hold out for the best possible deal.

A selection of the reaction from the Villa fans on social media can be seen below:

West Brom should make a move for Tottenham outcast Georges-Kevin N’Koudou

According to a recent report from The London Evening Standard, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou has been deemed a ‘surplus to requirements’ at Tottenham. The 23-year-old winger made the move to North London back in 2016 but has since struggled to force his way into Mauricio Pochettino’s first team, to the point that he was shipped out on loan to Burnley in the second half of last season.

And with the Frenchman now reportedly a ‘surplus to requirements’ at Spurs, his future appears to be away from the club, which should be of interest to West Brom manager Darren Moore as he seeks to enhance his side’s Championship promotion credentials.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the Baggies will be seeking an immediate return to the Premier League this term following their somewhat surprising relegation last time round, what with the Midlands club finishing bottom of the division to end their eight-year stay in the top tier.

And new manager Moore has already been busy bringing in some shrewd additions to his squad, most notably in the form of goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and centre back Kyle Bartley, yet further attacking reinforcements may be need to compensate for the departure of James McClean, who left for Stoke City earlier in the window – N’Koudou could be that man.

The 23-year-old may well have struggled for regular football at Tottenham in the last few years, but there’s a reason Pochettino and the club’s hierarchy spent £11 million on the winger back in 2016 – he clearly has both ability and indeed potential.

But playing irregularly is not going to allow N’Koudou to fulfil that potential, and he was even unable to command regular football on loan at Sean Dyche’s Burnley last season to suggest that dropping down to the Championship may be in his best interests.

And having produced the goods for Marseille back in the 2015/16 season, having netted ten goals and laid on five assists in all competitions, the Frenchman could well add a great deal of quality to the West Brom attacking ranks, and thus give Moore another solid and accomplished option from which to choose from.

And in the long, hard slog that is a Championship season, strength in depth is needed, so even if N’Koudou doesn’t command regular football straight away at the Hawthorns, he will certainly be used more frequently there than under Pochettino at Tottenham.

Thus, with the Frenchman reportedly a ‘surplus to requirements’, West Brom must seek to make a move for the £6.3 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) in a bid to enhance their promotion credentials.

Tottenham set to miss out on Pavard who would have been perfect for Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur are set to miss out on transfer target Benjamin Pavard as the Stuttgart defender looks set to move to Bayern Munich, according to German publication SWR Sport.

What’s the story?

The World Cup winner came to global prominence after scoring a wonder goal against Argentina in the World Cup Round of 16.

The 22-year-old joined Stuttgart two years ago and is comfortable playing either as a centre-back or right-back, and following his excellent World Cup performances, he was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.

Now it appears he is set to be snapped up by Bayern Munich who have reportedly enacted his release clause of £31.2million.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255896″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Tottenham’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

Missed opportunity

With Toby Alderweireld’s time at White Hart Lane nearing its end, Tottenham will need defensive reinforcements for the season ahead, and Pavard would make a great option for Maurichio Pochettino.

It’s hard to compete with the might of Bayern Munich but Pavard would have been well-suited to Tottenham, comfortable on the ball and joining attacks but very reliable in defence.

It’s another blow for Pochettino whose transfer window hasn’t really got up and running yet.

Stoke would be the team to beat in the Championship if they land James Chester

According to a recent report from The Daily Mail, Stoke City have launched a £10 million move for defender James Chester. The Aston Villa centre back enjoyed a fine season in helping the Villans finish fourth in the Championship and thus qualify for the end-of-season play-offs, although Steve Bruce’s men came up short in their quest to return to the Premier League after losing 1-0 to Fulham in the final at Wembley.

And £7.2 million-rated Chester (as per Transfermarkt) is one man who has been linked with a move away this summer, and were Gary Rowett’s men to indeed seal a deal for the Wales international, they would be the team to beat in the second tier this season.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, it was something a surprise that the Potters were relegated from the top-flight last term to end their ten-year stint in the top tier, especially when one looks at the squad that was available to managers Mark Hughes and Paul Lambert.

And while some of those players have indeed left this summer, most notably Xherdan Shaqiri, the likes of Ryan Shawcross, Jack Butland, Mame Biram Diouf, and Darren Fletcher, to name but a few, still remain at the bet365 Stadium as of now, thus giving new boss Rowett a great foundation from which to build a promotion-winning squad.

And the former Derby boss has gone for genuine Championship experience in the transfer market as well in bringing in the likes of Benik Afobe, Adam Federici, James McClean, and Tom Ince so far, much in the same way Newcastle did in their title-winning campaign of 2016/17.

Add in the potential arrival of Villa’s Chester, and the Potters would take some stopping in the second tier this term.

Arguably, 29-year-old Chester was one of the best defenders in the Championship last season in helping the Villans to one of the best defensive records in the division, what with Bruce’s side shipping just 42 goals in their 46 league games in the regular season.

And with Chester playing all 46 of those matches, alongside the three in the play-offs, it’s clear that he had as big an influence as anyone in helping the Midlands giants become a difficult side to score against and thus beat – he could well do the same at Stoke.

Alongside Shawcross, the duo could strike up a formidable centre back partnership at Championship level, and with the likes of McClean, Ince, and Afobe in the attacking areas, the foundations are certainly there for Rowett to take the club back to the top-flight at the first time of asking.

As such, were the Potters to indeed seal a deal for the Wales international, they would be the team to beat in the second tier this term.

Everton fans react as Mina deal on brink of collapse

Loads of Everton fans have been reacting to Wednesday’s centre back update, as the Toffees have grown “frustrated” in their attempts to sign Yerry Mina.

A report from GOAL claims Everton are set to turn their attentions to Marco Rojo, as Barcelona have refused to lower their demands for Mina.

The towering Colombian was seen as the perfect partner for Michael Keane, but it’s starting to look like this one is dead in the water.

According to the report, the Toffees hoped to get a deal done for the World Cup sensation around the £27m mark, but Barcelona are demanding £35m.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”275398″ player=”12034″ title=”4 Potential Replacements For Jordan Pickford At Everton”]

Lucas Digne signed from the Spanish champions this week, and a double deal for the pair would have injected new life into the Toffees’ back line.

They will now look towards Rojo though, who has found himself unable to nail down a place at Old Trafford.

The feisty Argentine is more versatile than Mina as he is able to play both centre back and left back, and fans are all agreeing it’s time to move on from the Colombian.
